our times a year Vegas PBS conducts on-air campaigns to encourage
viewers who are not supporters to help fund the programs they enjoy.
When we conduct surveys, many non-donors say they think we are funded
by the federal government. While we do receive about 57 cents per person
per year from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, viewer donations
vastly surpass this amount every year. Without major support from viewers, the pro-
grams you see on our channels would be greatly reduced.
Las Vegas includes many people who have worked professionally in our great per-
formance venues, as well as arts patrons who have eagerly consumed these offerings.
They tell us they look forward to the music specials that air during membership cam-
paigns. This month’s delights include classics like Great Performances following the
creation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's pop culture Broadway phenomenon Hamilton’sAmerica. We will also present Roy Orbison: Black and White Night 30 which celebrates
the 30th anniversary of an iconic concert with a newly-edited tribute program featuring
an all-star cast including T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang and Bruce Springsteen.
We are also delighted to bring you a number of new arts programs throughout the
month. Country music star Travis Tritt performs unplugged at Tennessee’s historic
Franklin Theater in Travis Tritt: A Man and His Guitar, and Tom Jones performs his sig-
nature songs along with some new material with special guest Alison Krauss in TomJones: A Soundstage Special Event.
Masterpiece fans can relive the memories of Downton Abbey one more time during
our encore broadcast of the Downton Abbey Marathon, from 9 p.m. on Thursday,
March 9 to midnight on Sunday, March 12. We also hope drama fans enjoy the first
season finale of Victoria on Masterpiece on Sunday, March 5 at 9 p.m., immediately
followed by the Victoria After Party. March 5 is also the second season finale of MercyStreet, scheduled at 8 p.m.
Few filmmakers better capture the spirit of public television than Ken Burns. Join
Tom Hanks, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Doris Kearns Goodwin and more to pay tribute to
the acclaimed documentary filmmaker in Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller. The pro-
gram also provides an exclusive look at his powerful new film – The Vietnam War –
which premieres later this year.
During Rick Steves’ Europe: Tuscany Marathon, viewers will enjoy three different
episodes from Rick Steves’ Europe that explore the cultural and artistic treasures of
Italy, including wine country and its famous cuisine (of course). During the marathon,
viewers will learn details about an exclusive Vegas PBS trip to the Tuscany region of
Italy with guided tours of the historic towns and landmarks for a little dolce vita under
the Tuscan sun.
Thank you for making a renewed, additional or sustainer pledge of support during
the March membership campaign. Your financial support makes the drama, history,
children’s, nature, science, performing arts, cooking and travel programs you love acces-
sible to everyone in our community and ensures these educational and inspirational pro-
grams will be enjoyed for another year.

Educating FamiliesVegas PBS utilizes the power of media to educate, engage and inspire lifelong learning by
creating and delivering meaningful educational content. We are able to leverage your mem-
bership support to secure additional funding and grants, positively impacting hundreds of
families each year.
Last summer, Vegas PBS Ready To Learn was able to utilize NV Energy Foundation grant
funds to support 61 family engagement workshops at Las Vegas-Clark County Library
District locations. In each workshop, facilitators modeled strategies to maximize the educa-
tional value of PBS KIDS programming, such as using closed-captioning and pausing televi-
sion to discuss open-ended questions, make predictions, define new vocabulary and make con-
nections. These workshops addressed literacy and Science,Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) concepts through popular programs such as Martha Speaks, Odd Squad, and Peg +
Cat. A total of 328 surveys were received in which 96.8% of the parents/caregivers stated
they learned how to help improve their child’s learning. One pleased parent exclaimed,“[I’m
excited to] build upon a topic that my child is learning about while watching a program with
math facts.Thank you for providing these programs to the community...”
In addition, Vegas PBS was recently awarded a grant from The Corporation for Public
Broadcasting (CPB) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) to assist underserved commu-
nities with educational resources. Vegas PBS will work with community partners to give
young children from low-income families a strong foundation in early science and literacy by
implementing new PBS KIDS programming, mobile apps and digital games in creative learn-
ing workshops. These new family engagement
workshops will use creative play to introduce
both kids and grownups to exciting digital and
tangible tools they can use to develop compu-
tation and STEM skills as they imagine, plan,
design and create their own child-led projects.
Furthermore, through local sponsorship,
Vegas PBS is proud to continue the tradition
of the PBS KIDS Writers Contest while the national contest is on hiatus. Last year, we
received a record-breaking 1,225 entries from students in kindergarten through fifth
grade. Grade levels are judged separately by a panel of qualified professionals based on orig-
inality, creative expression, storytelling technique, illustrations and overall impression. The
competition began in January and will conclude with an awards ceremony in May when
awardees will learn their placements. The top three winners in each grade level will receive a
trophy, framed enlargements of their work, and additional reading and writing resources. The
deadline for entries is Friday, April 7, 2017 by 5 p.m. Rules and entry forms are available at
VegasPBS.org/writers-contest.
Assisting families through focused, long-term partnerships and leveraging donor support is
a key element in educating and empowering our community, and is a priority for Vegas PBS.
Working together, we not only inspire, but also help ensure lifelong learning.

Africa’s GreatCivilizationsMonday, February 27-Wednesday, March 1 at 9 p.m.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr., provides a new
look at African history, traversing the
dawn of mankind to the dawn of the
20th century. The series is a breathtaking and personal journey through his-
tory that includes evidence of the earliest human culture and art, arguably
the world’s greatest ever civilizations and some of the world’s earliest writ-
ing. Gates travels throughout the vast continent of Africa to discover the
true majesty of its greatest civilizations. Beginning with Africa’s ancient his-
tory as the cradle of mankind, he brings to life the epic stories of both little-
known and celebrated African kingdoms and cultures. Gates demonstrates
how Africa and Africans shaped not only their own rich civilizations but also
the wider world.

Zoo Quest in ColourThursday, March 2 at 8 p.m.
First broadcasted in December 1954, Zoo Quest was one of the most popu-
lar television series of its time. It was the first time remote overseas loca-
tions and wild animals in their natural habitats had been shown on television,
and it changed the way viewers saw the world, revealing wildlife and tribal
communities that had never been filmed or even seen before. It also launched
the career of the young David Attenborough as a wildlife presenter. Ten
years before color television was seen in the UK, the series was thought to
have been filmed in black and white; but thanks to a recent remarkable dis-
covery in the BBC’s film vaults, the best of David Attenborough's early
adventures can now be seen as never before, in color.

Joe Bonamassa: Live from the Royal Albert Hall Monday, March 6 at 9:30 p.m.Guitarist Joe Bonamassa was opening for B.B. King
when he was only eight years old and was a veteran
of the road and gigging by the time he was 12.When
he took the stage at Royal Albert Hall in May 2009,
he fulfilled a dream he'd held since first picking up
a guitar as a kid in upstate New York. The sold-out
concert marked Bonamassa's headlining debut at
arguably the most prestigious concert venue in the
world. At the Hall, he had the added honor of being
joined onstage by the legendary Eric Clapton and
thrilled the audience with traded solos by two of
the world's best guitarists.

Downton Abbey MarathonThursday, March 9 at 9 p.m. through midnight on Sunday, March 12We have a little of our own March Madness lined up for you! Back by popu-
lar demand, for three delightful days, you can enjoy every single episode of
this phenomenal series. Fall in love again with the Crawley family and their
downstairs servants in a round-the-clock celebration. We first meet them in
1912 with the sinking of the Titanic, witness with them the tragedy of World
War I and then move into the Roaring Twenties. Plump the cushions, pour the
sherry and settle back into the world of the witty Dowager Countess, her
“frenemy” Isobel, the Crawley sisters and their below-stairs counterparts.
Relive once again all the romance, intrigue,
heartbreak and happiness.

Great RiftThursdays beginningMarch 23 at 8 p.m.Visible from space, Africa's Great
Rift Valley runs four thousand miles
from the Red Sea to the mouth of
the Zambezi – a diverse landscape
of erupting volcanoes, forest-clad mountains, spectacular valleys, rich grass-
lands, vast lakes and mighty rivers. Home to the greatest concentration of
animals on Earth – lions, crocodiles, elephants, hippos and flocks of flamin-
gos – and pastoralists such as the Maasai – this is a land in constant geolog-
ical turmoil. Great Rift takes you to another world – a world of exotic
extremes, where the forces of nature have shaped the landscape and so cre-
ated a hotbed of evolution. It is the very cradle of mankind.

The CoronerSaturdays at 10 p.m. beginning March 25 After a sneak peak in February, we begin the official launch of this new crime
series beginning with the first episode. Crime investigations against a stun-
ning seaside backdrop are at the heart of this entertaining new drama that
follows a high-flying solicitor who returns to live and work in the small town
she escaped as a teenager. As coroner, Jane Kennedy’s job is to investigate
sudden or unexplained deaths in this beautiful English coastal community.
With a new and intriguing case to investigate in each episode, starting with
the discovery of a body, Jane finds herself having to work with old flame
Davey Higgins, who is now the local detective sergeant. While Jane is talent-
ed and tenacious in seeking justice for the dead, her personal life is a bit
more haphazard!

To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters on MasterpieceSunday, March 26 at 9 p.m.Against all odds, this famous literary trio had their genius for writing roman-
tic novels recognized in a male-dominated 19th century world. Coming from
obscurity to produce some of the greatest and most enduring classics of all
time, Charlotte,Anne and Emily remain one the greatest literary mysteries in
the world. The drama revolves around the three sisters’ increasingly difficult
relationship with their brother Branwell, who in the last three years of his
life – following a tragically misguided love affair – sank into alcoholism, drug
addiction and appalling behavior. It was from this difficult home environ-
ment that their remarkable literary output emerged.Their father, a clever and
unusual man, grew up in an impoverished home, educated himself, and who
was happy to encourage his children – irrespective of their sex – to become
passionate about literature and its possibilities.Ann Bronte, Emily Bronte
and Charlotte Bronte

Global Ethics ForumSaturday, March 4 at noonHow do global leaders make decisions? Whatmoral codes guide them – and how do thosecodes evolve? This weekly television show isproduced by the Carnegie Ethics Studio, adivision of the Carnegie Council for Ethics inInternational Affairs. Each week, differentexperts navigate the murky moral landscapespresented by global politics, development, and international business. New episodesoften confront challenges relevant to currentevents, while episodes in the CarnegieClassics series address longer-term ethicaltopics. In this week’s episode, AgainstEmpathy: The Case for Rational Compassion,Yale Psychology professor Paul Bloom saysthat we often think that empathy, our capac-ity "to feel someone's pain," is the ultimatesource of goodness. Nothing could be fartherfrom the truth, he argues. Why is empathydangerous? What should replace it?

Great Performances at the Met: ElektraThursday, March 16 at 9 p.m.
Richard Strauss' blazing tragedy about an ancient Greek princess hell-bent on revenge
is performed by an extraordinary cast headed by Nina Stemme as the obsessed and
bloodthirsty title character. Starring Waltraud Meier as Elektra's mother and the
object of her fury; Adrianne Pieczonka as Elektra's sister, Chrysothemis; Eric Owens
as her exiled brother, Orest; and German tenor Burkhard Ulrich, in his Met debut, as
the corrupt monarch Aegisth. The opera is conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The
title role is demanding even by the composer’s daunting standards: Once Elektra
takes the stage near the beginning of the opera, she does not leave, portraying a
wide spectrum of emotions and singing over an enormous orchestra throughout the
course of the work.
