pend an evening with our friends from the animal kingdom. The night begins with

Nature: American Eagle at 8 p.m. Everything about them is big. They are

one of nature’s largest raptors, with wings that can span eight feet, and nests

that can weigh up to a ton. Yet most people know little about it beyond its striking appear-

ance. From the pristine wilderness of Alaska to the Upper Mississippi River Valley, this spe-

cial goes behind the scenes and into the nest to provide the ultimate bird’s eye view into

the private life of an American icon.

At 9 p.m., NOVA: Dogs Decoded

reveals the science behind the remarkable

bond between humans and their dogs and

investigates new discoveries in genetics that

are illuminating the origin of dogs — with surprising implications for the evolution of

human culture. Other research is proving what dog lovers have suspected all along: dogs

have an uncanny ability to read and respond to human emotions. Humans, in turn, respond

to dogs with the same hormone responsible for bonding mothers to their babies.

The love of pets continues with Shelter

Me: Let’s Go Home at 10 p.m. This

    inspiring program celebrates shelter pets

with stories about people’s lives being

improved when they adopt a shelter pet, as

these pets go from rescued to rescuer. Some

individuals have adopted shelter dogs and are

now volunteering at hospitals. Also featured

is an amazing story about our hero firefight-

ers who train shelter dogs for search-and-

rescue. Every year, 3-4 million dogs and

    cats are euthanized in America’s

    shelters and adoptions give these

    incredible animals a second

    chance. The documentary is

    about hope, helping others

    and making a difference.

e continue to live through an age of ever-changing technology and

information. In recent years, smart phones, tablets, mobile apps

and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter impacted lives

in profound ways. Certainly education has changed as devices,

    applications and learning styles evolve.

The growth of online content and digital resources along with innovative tools and

methods has all helped teachers educate students. This trend was identified in a recent

article in Education Week, among many other sources, and highlights how a dramatic

increase in digital video has led the way and provides a huge impact on teaching and stu-

    dent learning.

Vegas PBS has been actively involved

    in integrating video and providing

online video streaming services to local

schools and the community for many

years. In Clark County School District

classrooms alone, we have provided mil-

lions of streams and downloads repre-

senting tens of thousands of videos seg-

ments and other digital resources to

local teachers, helping them reach new

    generations of students.

This explosion of instructional video content has major implications for student learn-

ing both inside and outside of the classroom. With multiple technological options, students

can access instructional video content “anywhere and anytime,” allowing them to extend

learning opportunities. If students are going to be constantly accessing technology, having

access to a massive library of instructionally correlated videos and digital resources allows

for substantial learning outside of the classroom. In addition, virtual or online courses will

typically have embedded video segments to highlight concepts, assist students with visual-

izing content and keep their interest in the subject matter.

In the classroom, teachers constantly have to strive to find innovative ways to keep stu-

dents engaged, and videos can provide that hook to keep students learning. Students cre-

ate and integrate their own videos along with existing resources to create new instruction-

al units and learning opportunities. These new models also allow teachers to give students

new ways to master content outside of a traditional lecture format.

Integrating video and other digital resources to have a positive impact on student learn-

ing helps keep the important work of teachers fresh and engaging, and represents a change

    for the best.

The Statue of LibertyTuesday, July 2 at 8 p.m.

For more than 100 years, the Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of hope and refuge for gen-erations of immigrants. In this lyrical, compelling and provocative portrait of the statue, KenBurns explores both the history of America’s premier symbol and the meaning of liberty itself.

Narrated by David McCullough, the film traces the develop-ment of the monument – from its conception to its fascinat-ing and often controversial construction to its final dedica-tion. Featuring rare archival photographs, paintings anddrawings, readings from actual diaries, letters and newspa-pers of the day, the fascinating story of this universallyadmired monument is told.

The Civil WarSunday, July 7 from Noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 14 from Noon to 5 p.m.

In 1990, Ken Burns’ epic documentary brought to lifeAmerica’s most destructive – and defining conflict. Thisseries was most highly-watched program ever on PBS,attracting more than 40 million viewers and has been hon-ored with more than 40 major film and television awards.

Immerse yourself in the profound drama of the Civil Waras Vegas PBS presents the series in its entirety over twoSundays. The program is the saga of celebrated generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic and tran-scendent president and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one. Voicesfor the series include Sam Waterston, Jason Robards, Jeremy Irons, Morgan Freeman, GarrisonKeillor, Arthur Miller and many others. Historian David McCullough narrates.

In an interview, Burns observes, “I realized that we had taken longer to make a film about theCivil War than it took the nation to fight it in the first place. But the long and painstaking processhad permitted me to refine a filmmaking style that we had been evolving for more than 10 years.”

Sent by President Thomas Jefferson to find the fabled Northwest Passage, Meriwether Lewisand William Clark led the most important expedition in American history – a voyage of danger anddiscovery from St. Louis to the headwaters of the Missouri River, over the Continental Divide tothe Pacific. It was the United States’ first exploration of the West and one of the nation’s mostenduring adventures. This program tells the remarkable story of the entire corps – not just thetwo famous captains, but the young army men, French-Canadian boatmen, Clark’s African-American slave and the Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, who brought along her infant son. HalHolbrook narrates. Repeats Sundays July 14 & 21 at 5 p.m.

The Dust BowlSunday, July 21 from 1 to 5 p.m.

This compelling film chronicles the environmental catastrophe that, throughout the 1930s,destroyed farmlands of the Great Plains, turned prairies into deserts and unleashed a pattern ofmassive, deadly dust storms that for many seemed to herald the end of the world. Once a droughthit in 1931, winds began picking up soil from the open fields and grew into dust storms of biblicalproportions. Each year for nearly a decade, the storms grew more ferocious and more frequent, sweeping up millions of tons of earth, killing crops and livestock, threatening to turn the south-ern plains into a Sahara, even spreading the dust clear across the country.

The documentary uses compelling interviews with 26 survivors of those hard times – what willprobably be the last recorded testimony of the generation that lived through the Dust Bowl. Filledwith seldom-seen movie footage, previously unpublished photographs, and the observations of tworemarkable women who left behind eloquent written accounts, the film is also a historicalaccounting of what happened and why during the 1930s on the southern plains.

ritain is extraordinarily rich in prehistory with monuments of stone, fragments of domes-

tic life and the remains of people who walked the land thousands of years ago. Together,

they add up to an amazing tale of survival, technological innovation and revolution that

laid the foundations of modern society. Now, former archaeologist Neil Oliver travels the

British Isles to uncover this remarkable story. Tapping into the latest scientific detective work and

experimental archeology at the frontier of cutting edge research, he gets under the skin of this mys-

terious world and the lives of those who inhabited it.

    JULY 18

The land, and the stone that comes from it, is viewed as sacred. Stonehenge is the center of this

landscape, a place where the living can commune with the dead, and through which the recently

dead can pass into the world of the ancestors.

    JULY 25

Metal comes to Britain from Europe. The art of using fire and of working metal is a religious activi-

ty. The first swords appear, and warriors challenge the shaman class. Wealth, imports and exports

create new social forces. After thousands of years, Stonehenge is abandoned.

lethal U-boat submarines, the Nazis builtmassive, impenetrable concrete submarinepens. Structures too immense to be hidden, they were constructed to withstand directhits from even the biggest Allied bombs.Such was their size and strength that thesepens still survive today, a testament to theirengineering.

    July 31 V2 Rocketand Dome

The first ever long-range rockets weredesigned and built by the Nazis in a networkof top secret research labs, undergroundsilos and hi-tech launch pads. This is thestory of how scientist Werner von Braun her-alded the birth of ballistic missiles and laidthe technological foundations for the spacerace.

n the quest for world domination, theNazis built some of the biggest anddeadliest pieces of military hardwareand malevolent technology in history.

With brilliant, dark minds and a legion ofcaptive labor at their disposal, the Nazisbelieved the path to ultimate victory was toout-build and out-engineer their enemies. Tothem, bigger definitely meant better, andbetter meant more lethal. As Hitler's grip onEurope tightened, he ordered men likeWernher von Braun, Ferdinand Porsche andAlfried Krupp to build increasingly out-

landish machines and structures to realizehis master plan. This is World War II toldfrom a new perspective. This series uncoversthe engineering secrets of three iconic megastructures, tells the stories of the evilgeniuses that designed them and revealshow these structures sparked a technologi-cal revolution that changed warfare forever.

Last Will and TestamentsBy David M. Grant, JD, MAcc

the opportunity in their last will and testa-ment to nominate a guardian for minor chil-dren, if any, and for themselves if necessary.A few definitions and basic requirements fora will in the State of Nevada are as follows:

    • The testator (person making the will)must be of sound mind and at least 18 yearsold. (NRS 133.020)

    • Formal wills, as opposed to holographicwills, must be in writing and signed by thetestator, and attested to by at least two com-petent witnesses, subscribing their namesto the will in the presence of the testator.NRS 133.040. Notarizing the witnesses’ affi-davits can be helpful in establishing thatthe witnesses truly witnessed the executionof the will. (NRS 133.050)

    • A holographic will is one in which thesignature, date, and material provisions arewritten by the hand of the testator, whetherwitnessed or notarized. (NRS 133.090)

    • Tangible personal property can be dis-

lthough a living trust is theestate planning and testamen-tary vehicle of choice for mostpeople in Southern Nevada, for

those who have modest size estates – suchas where there is no real estate involved, and where the only assets are small bankaccounts, home furnishings and heirlooms –a will may be the better choice.

A will is important, at a minimum, to des-ignate the individual one would like to serveas executor of his or her estate, to divide theestate among the proper individuals andcharities, to declare one’s heirs and makeany desired disinheritances, and to leavecherished heirlooms and other personaleffects to those persons who will mostappreciate them.

A will is also used to designate how one’sremains are to be handled, and to makewishes known concerning burial, cremationand funeral plans. Many people also take

It must also besigned, and dated, as well as be sufficientlyclear in identifying the specific personalproperty and individuals who should respec-tively take such personal property. Realproperty and other property with titles, such as bank accounts or corporate stock, should not be included on the list, butrather handled within the body of the will.(NRS 133.045)

in every way imaginable, yet women and girls still face significant and profound challenges

throughout their lives. The Vegas PBS Women’s Engagement Council is a group ofphilanthropic and community-minded women whose members donate $2,000 annually to support

Vegas PBS programs that focus on issues affecting women and girls in three main focus areas:

human trafficking, young women’s health and well-being, and the Makers: Women inNevada History documentary project. In addition, they work with local non-profit organiza-tions that provide direct services to women and girls here in Las Vegas. We are grateful for their

    lia Kazan is primarily remem-

    bered for his impressive directori-

al body of work in the 1950s —

On the Waterfront, East of Eden,

    A Streetcar Named Desire, Gentleman’s

Agreement, A Face in the Crowd — but remained

controversial. To many, he was singularly and

permanently emblematic of the sin of “naming

names” before the House Committee on Un-

American Activities. To others, his extraordinary

work deserved recognition. One of his strongest

supporters was the filmmaker Martin Scorsese,

the director of this documentary. A personal

and poignant meditation on art and the creative

impulse, this is biography and autobiography —

Kazan’s life, his sense of himself as an immi-

experiences seeing Kazan’s films for the first

his very special program — hosted by Judy's daughter Lorna Luft — is a loving tribute

to the life and timeless popularity of superstar Judy Garland. In 1985, Luft narrated

this documentary focusing on her mother’s “second career” following her years at

MGM. The special collects comments from family and colleagues and shows clips

from live concerts. Some of the powerful performances include a duet with Barbra Streisand of

“Get Happy” and “Happy Days Are Here Again,” her dramatically charged rendition of the “Battle

Hymn of the Republic” following JFK’s death, “Ol’ Man River” and “The Man That Got Away.” And

of course, “Over the Rainbow” is featured in a 1955 performance that is the only TV recording
