Writing in Grade 1/2—

Inspirations from Nature

This term, the Grades 1 and 2 have had the writing focus of expanding word choice. Inspired by the 0 plus 5 Traits of Writing, the students have participated in a range of learning activities to help them understand the role of different kinds of words (nouns, verbs, adjective and adverbs) and develop a curiosity about language.

Recently, the students were challenged to describe a magical path. Before writing, they were provided with different photographs to help them visualise and brainstorm appropriate and interesting vocabulary. The students chose their words using their prior knowledge and a thesaurus. The students produced excellent writing!

The Forest

Grace Sidebottom 1/2S

I see people, trees, butterflies, sky and clouds. I smell grass. I hear birds tweeting in the sky.

Lilly has blue eyes and brown hair. Her favourite colours are pink and purple

She got lost in the forest, far away from her house. There are bad monsters in the forest too. Then she finds a lost friend who helps her build a car with using wood, leaves and grass. Then she got in the car and drove home.

The Magic Path

Mai Coutts 1/2S

The beautiful trees looked magical. But I was totally lost. The overgrown track was never ending. I want to follow it so I pack my bags and start my journey. I follow the path until I get to the bottom of a cliff. I stop walking there so I can set up my tent and sleeping bag for the night. In the morning I set off again.

School Review News

We are progressing well with the self evaluation process which is the beginning of our School Review. Heather Hill, one of our

Challenge Partners for the Review has met with the School Improvement Team (the SIT is the group made up of school

leadership staff) and with the whole staff to get their views. In these meetings the groups have reviewed the School’s Mission

statement (shared in a previous RPS News) and recorded thoughts about where the school is placed in relation to the following

questions:

How do we go about teaching and learning at RPS? What successful strategies are we using that help us achieve our purpose?

- Student Achievement – what are students learning at Richmond, and how are teachers teaching it?

- Engagement – How do we foster student engagement?

- Wellbeing- How do we promote student wellbeing?

Heather has also been reviewing responses to the three key surveys that DET conduct of our stakeholders: the Attitudes to

School Survey (a survey conducted with students in Grade 4-6); the Parent Opinion Survey; and the Staff Opinion Survey. She will

be bringing some of the key themes that have consistently been represented from these survey results as discussion points in

further consultations.

Our next key event is the Parent Forum that will be held this Monday at 7.15 in the School Library. Thankyou to those people

who have registered their intention to attend this important event. I ask for those people yet to respond that you please consider

coming and book your place via the Signmee form sent out last week. The School Review page on our website has a range of

resources you may want to have a look at before the evening. Please come along and have your say— we will be serving wine

and cheese after the formal part of the session is done. I look forward to seeing you there. Dean Banova Principal
