MIKAEL DASHIAN

President

NPF Group

I am pleased that we got a lot of posi-

tive reviews after RIAS Tarragona 2014

ended. We work as one wise Spanish

saying states — Menos bulto más clari-

dad (less complex—more clear). That is

the reason why we focused not on pro-

tocol conference, but on B2B meetings.

It is essential that every event brings

real benefit for its participants.

It so happened that our main audience

for RIAS 2014 was from Russia. And we

have our good reasons: sport is trending

now in Russia. Universiade in Kazan,

Winter Olympics in Sochi, coming up

World Cup 2018 and Universiade in

Krasnoyarsk. It would bring me great

delight if the I RIAS would become the

first step for entrance to the Russian

market. Though we are thinking glob-

ally.

Next year we do our utmost to continue and improve RIAS. It is good that we have already ‘started

the engine’ and people from different parts of the world have got interested in the event.

I express my best appreciation and gratitude to all our partners who took part in the first event.

I also send my best words for the City Council of Tarragona—this remarkable city with great and rich

history has become the perfect venue for our project.

And this is only the beginning!

WELCOME TO CATALONIA — WELCOME TO TARRAGONA

Tarragona past is glorius: during the Roman times , the city was

named Tarraco and was capital of the province of Hispania Tarraconensis,

one of the three provinces in Hispania, the present day territory of the Ibe-

rian peninsula. There are still a lot of roman remains to be found in good

condition in Tarragona and around

Tarragona Present is exciting: not only tourist industry, but also great trans-

port links, interesting projects like Smart City and more

Tarragona Future is promising: 2017 Mediterranean Games are yet to

describe a few projects which are working already. Pavel has been successfully active as an entrepreneur

with over ten business ventures in Moscow, Moscow Region, Tomsk, Tumen, Krasnodar, Buryatiya. 2009

he started the Tomsk club of young entrepreneurs. Pavel is the winner of various contests and awards.

Pavel has a strong portfolio of investment projects: wellness clubs chain for women (600 000 Euro);

sorting and recycling facility for waste (900 000 Euro); development of tourist facilities on the Northern

Baikal Lake (Republic of Buryatiya) (2 300 000 Euro); a 3200 m2 fitness centre in Tomsk (1 600 000

Euro); construction of affordable housing (economy and comfort class) (2 600 000 Euro)

cially in Europe.

Yan BOBROVSKY

Russian soccer player

Yan played for the top Russian club – Zenit and playing for Russia, he became 2006 UEFA European

Under-17 Football Championship winner, now he is a professional football referee. We are really happy

to have had Yan as a speaker. Yan was very open about his career saying that is is important to have

an agent to help a young footballer at the dawn of their career. Yan spoke about injuries. Nine cham-

pions of the squad got injured the same way (crucial ligament) which calls for special treatment and

careful recovery. Yan’s experience can come in handy for young players and youth teams coaches.

14 May 2006 года Number 11 of the Russian national team defender Yan Bobrovsky went out on

pitch to play against the Czech team. This happened at the stadium Josy Barthel - Luxembourg. That

night Russia won 5:3 and became the European Champion (2006 UEFA European Under-17 Football

Championship). This was a great advantage for many young Russians. But only a very few of this

‘golden’ squad are playing now in the Russian top football league, while their opponents were Toni Kroos, Bojan Krkic, César Azpili-

cueta, Stevan Jovetić, Axel Witsel, Marko Marin.

Should you wish to contact Yan Bobrovsky directly, please request his contact details by emailing to [email protected]

Meetings and events are only one part of RIAS. RIAS

is more.

RIAS stands for a scientific centre for Re-

search of Intangible Assets in Sports, where

we analyze commercial opportunities of in-

tellectual property in sports.

What is IPV?

Here is some background and results. 2 years ago in 2012 we developed a complex method based on statistical, mathematical and

other analytical tools basing on open sources to evaluate the value of intellectual property rights of each and every football player

or any other sportsman or woman. These rights can be sold and leased as anything that has value. One of the first clubs we ana-

lyzed was FC Chelsea in March, 2012. Please take your time to learn some results

we have.

Let us introduce you our index called Intellectual Property Value, or IPV for sport.

IPV Index shows the return on investment on transfer of a player, for example

IPV=10% means that each transfer value Euro is potentially capable of bringing in

10 eurocents if intellectual property assets of the player in question are managed

and distributed.

The final income in this case depends on allocation of profits between a club, an

agent and a player. The index shows potential for growth, it is a promise for future.

Our top 5 Chelsea players with the highest index in 2012 were Oriol Romeu, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Daniel Sturridge and John

Terry. In the below Table you will find the results:

Table 1. IPV Index 2012-2014. Top 5 Chelsea Players

Four out of five players showed improvement of the Index, which proves the good prospects of players.

Meetings and events are only one part of RIAS. RIAS

is more.

RIAS stands for a scientific centre for Re-

search of Intangible Assets in Sports, where

we analyze commercial opportunities of in-

tellectual property in sports.

IPV Index shows the potential of a player in terms of using his image rights in advertising for example. The high-

est IPV belonged to Oriol Romeu - 73,24%. Such high value was attributed to Romeu’s promising start with the

world’s leading football team Barcelona (top rank of IFFHS 2009-2011) Romeu is also on youth national team of

Spain where Romeu won 2008 the UEFA U-17 Championship. The footballer is a young player, he was born in

1991, so when potential is evident and the future is ahead it is likely that there can be potential for growth. It is

worth mentioning that the transfer value was growing over the previous three years (average annual growth

rate—51%). Now he is on loan to Valencia, a troubled Spanish club, and Barcelona lost their leadership.

The top playing and commercial potential of Oriol Romeu provided all reasons to assume that the second Cesc Fabregas. But there

were some circumstances that prevented the rise. The present loan at Valencia does not look like a grand twist in the world star’s

career. Though there may be some personal difficulties. It is no secret that Sturridge and Lukaku also did not quite enjoy good per-

formance in Chelsea. And it is obvious what would happen to Tibo Courtois if he had not moved on loan to Atletico. Apparently it is

the very case when IPV Index and the actual career are not corresponding. An exception to prove a rule.

Fernando Torres held the second place with 65,08%. Torres was a captain for Athletico Madrid (2012 - 25th place

IFFHS) and for Liverpool (2012 - 150th place IFFHS), but mostly his high ranking is attributed to the international

career of the player for the world’s top national team—Spain (91 appearences, 27 goals scored). Torres has a lot

of titles and is active in public (has a personal webpage, published an autobiography, appeared in a film and mu-

sic video). Since 2012 Torres managed to add up because of UEFA Europa League, UEFA Euro Golden Boot, FIFA

Confederations Cup Golden Shoe and FIFA Confederations Cup Team 2013.

Immediately after his transfer to Chelsea El Niño has deteriorated his performance. 12 goals in 2 seasons seemed

like a sentence for any further selection, and the decline in the quality of game is really very similar to the one of Shevchenko. But it

seems to be a turned page: 22 goals in season 2012-2013 look impressive. El Niño is still a central forward in the Spanish national

team with over 100 matched played. 2012 brought Torres a victory as part of the Spanish team, he scores in the final and makes a

goal pass. He wins the Golden Boot of the tournament. In a year he will win the Golden Boot of the Confederations Cup and the

UEFA Cup.

The third place is occupied by Juan Mata (62,11%). He also played for the Spanish national team (14 appear-

ances, 5 goals). Mata has a lot of titles. Among Juan Mata’s latest achievements we can name the two. The first

one is his multimillion transfer to Manchester United. In January 2014 he was transferred to Manchester for the

club record fee of over 37 million pounds.

Daniel Sturridge (24,77%) played for Manchester City before Chelsea where he reserved his

place in the first squad and scored 20 goals.

As for Terry goes on to be the Chelsea’s captain, sharing all honours of the team and England,

and have some controversy in his behavior.

While the index shows potential for growth, IPValue itself shows the present value of IP rights.

Our top 5 Chelsea players with the highest IPV in 2012 were Juan Mata, Fernando Torres, Oriol Romeu, David Luiz and Daniel Stur-

ridge.

Table 2. IPValue 2012/2014. Top 5 Chelsea players

Mata, Torres, Romeu and Sturridge were already in our another top 5, so the one left is David Luiz. Luiz continued his career in

Chelsea and won UEFA Europa League (2012-2013) and other important championships include international ones for Brazil.

Another player but outside the top five is Didier Drogba. His career may not seem simple.

But if we pay attention not to the sport performance, but to the commercial component of

his career, we can draw real interesting conclusions. First of all it is the successful deal with

Shanghai Shenhua and it made a 34 y.o. forward one of the top paid footballers in the

world. Drogba's reported $300,000 (£193,000) a week salary (Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/

news/world-asia-18840348). After the notorious crisis with the club, his transfer to Galata-

saray looks like a compromise, but at the same it is a successful taking into account all cir-

cumstances business transaction.

To sum up IPV is an analytical tool to evaluate the intellectual property rights and commercial potential of each sportsman or

woman. While sport is becoming more and more like business these days, IPV can be useful not only for setting up business strate-

gies and models of clubs, but also for decision-making in short- and mid-term.
