Time to break out the scarves and mittens! Winter is known for its cold air, fun outdoor activities and hot chocolate. There are some health risks that you should be aware of, no matter your age. The medical experts of Brown Physicians, Inc. fill us in on winter health-related issues and ways to avoid them from happening.
Staying Healthy This Winter
Although winter comes as no surprise, many of us are not ready for its arrival. If you are prepared for the hazards of winter, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperatures start to fall.
Many people spend time outdoors in the winter working, traveling, or enjoying winter sports. Outdoor activities can expose you to several safety hazards, but you can take these steps to prepare for them: Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: wear a tightly woven, preferably wind-resistant coat or jacket; inner layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats;
scarves; and waterproof boots. Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches. Work slowly when doing outside chores. Take a buddy and an emergency kit when you are participating in outdoor recreation and always carry a cell phone.
Also, remember while in your car or taking a winter trip to have supplies such as an emergency kit that includes first-aid items, your cell phone, a flashlight (and extra batteries), a portable charger, blankets, some food and water, booster cables, flares, and a bag of sand or cat litter (for traction).

Sore throats are usually caused by viral
infections. Wear a scarf to keep your face
covered outside. If you do get a sore
throat, gargling with salt water can help
with relief.
Asthma can be triggered by cold air. Be
cautious during winter by staying indoors
on cold and windy days. If you go out,
cover your nose and mouth. Keep inhalers
close by.
Heart attacks are common in winter
because the cold weather can increase
your blood pressure, putting strain on the
heart. Indoors, keep your main rooms
heated, use extra blankets or layers of
clothing as needed, and dress warm when
you go out.
Dry skin can get worse when it’s cold.
Moisturize more than usual, especially
after taking a bath or shower. Wear gloves
and scarves when outside to cover
exposed skin.
Arthritis can feel worse during the winter,
but there isn’t evidence that cold weather
makes arthritis worse. If you think your
arthritis pain is worse, try increasing your
physical activity levels. Immobility can
make pain worse.
Colds and the flu are common. Wash
your hands frequently, avoid touching
your nose, mouth, and eyes, and avoid
people who are already sick. Remember to
get your flu shot also.

Good oral health is very important. It touches every aspect of our lives but is often taken for granted. Your mouth can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Systemic diseases, those that affect the entire body, may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems.
Oral Health: The Window to a Healthy Body
Whether you are 80 or 8, your oral health is important. Most Americans today enjoy excellent oral health but cavities
remain the most prevalent chronic disease of childhood. Some 100 million Americans fail to see a dentist each year, even though regular dental examinations and good oral hygiene can prevent most dental disease. Many people believe that they need to see a dentist only if they are in pain, but regular dental visits can contribute to a lifetime of good oral health. If you are experiencing dental pain, don’t put off seeing a dentist. With dentistry’s many advances, diagnosis and treatment are more sophisticated and comfortable than ever.
At Smiles, oral and maxillofacial surgeons James Smothers, DDS and Jane Hartman, DMD, of Woonsocket and Warwick, RI practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from corrective jaw surgery to wisdom tooth removal. 60 Green Trail, Woonsocket, and 2990 Williams Rd., Warwick, 434-4006, smilesdentalcare.com.

Lower back pain has many causes. The normal wear and tear that happens as you begin getting older. While you can’t prevent every type of painful back disorder, in most cases there are things you can do to help keep your back healthy.
Five Easy Steps to a Pain-Free Back
Weak back and abdominal muscles — due to deconditioning or age — cause or exacerbate many cases of low back pain. That’s why stretching and strengthening
both your back and abdominal muscles is important not only for treating low back pain, but also for helping to prevent a recurrence of the problem. Yoga is one way to assist in keeping a health back.
Exercise strengthens and lengthens the muscles that support the spine. A good exercise regimen should target the back, abdominal, and buttock muscles. Strong abdominal or hip flexor muscles, for example, help people maintain an upright posture, as do strong extensor muscles, which run the full length of the back and maintain alignment of the vertebrae.
Rhode Island Spine Consultants, with several convenient locations to serve you, understand the challenges faced when you’re confronting neck and back pain, where even the simple routines of life can be painfully difficult. Our team is comprised of the best spine surgeons in Rhode Island. Various locations in the state. 434-4888, rispinesurgery.com.
