A Message from the Publisher…

Welcome to the 2011 edition of the Most Influential Latinos magazine. This annual publication originated in 2006 and resulted in an incredible, positive impact as the first publication of its kind, highlighting the region’s Latino community.

The Most Influential Latinos magazine is a collection of a large group of local Latino leaders that were nominated by their peers and selected through a distinguished committee. De-veloped as a need to showcase the accomplishments of our local Latino community, these leaders are highlighted and recognized for their contributions to Latinos and their commu-nity at-large, through this publication.

Our first edition was an eye-opener to many who suddenly realized the importance and pre-eminence of our community. This year, we build upon our previous successes and present a collection of esteemed professionals that really make our community proud.

This magazine is divided in four sections that present different groups of people, all of them successful within their professions. First, the 10 Under 40 group, is a collection of the community’s next generation of leaders; then, Latino Leaders is a category that includes many seasoned executives and officials who work tirelessly toward the betterment of our community.

Next, we have the Movers and Shakers, who are defined by their significant impact to create and generate opportunities that move forward and progress for the benefit of the larger community; and finally, the Most Influential are a group of individuals that have strongly influenced a course of events and changed the way peo-ple relate to one another through their accomplishments and ex-traordinary work during the past year.

I personally invite all of our readers to enjoy this publication as it highlights some of the best and brightest stars that help make Philadelphia a great Region for Latinos. The 2011 awardees share individual success stories and recognize the meaningful commit-ment they exhibit as local role models for our youth. In our com-munity, the success of some is the triumph of many.

Once again, it’s a tremendous privilege for us to be able to recognize the ac-complishments and successes of many Latinos that honor their community with their commitment and purpose in their daily lives in order to generate

better copnditions for our people.

This year the selecting committee had a demanding task, as we looked deeper into the long list of nominees, to make sure the final list of awardees was as fair as possible.

Our final 50 awardees were chosen from a list covering the entire region. Some names are well known within the community, some others do not sound familiar to many, but even people working out of the spotlight can have a huge impact over other people’s lives.

Latinos are a powerful group of very diverse people linked by a common heritage. This heritage keep us united as a great force that the nation and the world have aknowledged. Hispanics are the largest multicultural group in the nation. It is our hope that as we continue to gain strength in numbers, we will remain diligent in our efforts to highlight the greatness of our people.

The efforts to acknowledge our influential leaders is one small step towards a com-mon, shared goal. A goal to unify our community and create positive change. Thank you all for your diligence and hard work in achieving your dreams. Edwin worked at the Philadelphia Anti-Drug Anti-Violence Network (PAAN), Women Organized Against Rape and at Congreso de Latinos Unidos.

Recently, she has joined as an ally of the Vision 2020 movement by Drexel University, focusing on recruiting and retaining women into the S.T.E.M. fields. Amaris serves as vice-president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women where she was awarded NACOPRW Outstand-ing Service to the Community award. A graduate of Drexel University, Amaris received a Bachelor’s of Science in Information Systems and Technology, with minors in Business Administration and Psychology.

Executive Director, GPCC’s Chilean and American Chamber of CommerceRicardo Maldonado is the Executive Director of the GPCC’s Chilean and American Chamber of Commerce where he helped lead the effort to make Chile the number one trade partner at the Ports of the Delaware River. He is the current chairman of the foreign affairs committee for ‘Ship Philly First,’ a group of businesses in the

tri-state area working to increase commercial trade between the Ports of Philadelphia and the rest of the world. Maldonado

DJ BOMBON / Juan Carlos MosqueaRadio Personality, MEGA 1310 AMJuan Carlos Mosquea is better know as DJ BOMBON, in La Mega 1310 Radio Station. He started his career in radio in 1993 back in his native Dominican Republic. He moved to the States in 2006, where he furthered his career. He has won several awards, including the GOLDEN MICROPHONE, as a rookie revelation, and has been nominated to the Hispanic Choice Awards as a Radio and TV personality.

Michelle Angela OrtizVisual ArtistMichelle Angela Ortiz is a visual artist who seeks to capture lost legacies, personal stories and silenced voices in her work. As a highly skilled muralist, Ortiz has designed and created over 30 large-scale public works nationally (PA, NJ, MS, NY). The United States Embassy has selected Ortiz as a Cultural Envoy to conduct community building and art for social change work in Suva, Fiji, Juarez and Chihuahua City, Mexico, and Vitoria, Spain. She also created a mural with the community in Juarez, Mexico. Ortiz currently serves on the local host committee for the NALAC National Con-ference to be held in Philadelphia in 2012. Ortiz holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Moore College of Art & Design and a Master’s Degree in Science of Arts and Cultural Management from Rosemont College.

Chief Operating Officer, ASPIRA of PARendón has been employed by ASPIRA of PA since 1996. Rendón served as Finance Director and is currently the organization’s Chief Oper-ating Officer. Orlando is responsible for everything pertaining to licensure, human resources, finance, and contracts. Hector AyalaPresident and CEO, Hispanic Community Counseling Services - HCCSHector Ayala MHS, HS-BCP, has served for the past 5 years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hispanic Com-munity Counseling Services (HCCS), one of the largest providers serving the Latino community in Philadelphia. He has served as a clinical consultant for several human services organizations, clinical director of numerous programs across the city of Philadelphia, where his work has focused on supporting multicultural treatment, recovery and resiliency theory and integrating trauma-informed care into school and community settings. Prior to coming to HCCS, Ayala was the Division Director of Community and School Based Services for Children’s Crisis Treatment Center. He holds a Bachelor in Clinical Psychology from Universidad Interamericana in Puerto Rico and a Masters in Human Services from Lincoln University in Philadelphia.

Executive Director, Amparo de la NiñezFelipe Castro is the founder and Executive Director of Amparo de la Niñez, an organization basen in Northeast Philadelphia. Castro and his wife Iris Mirta, together with his team of some 25 volunteers, have collaborated

to make Amparo de la Niñez a place where children can have a safe, loving, peaceful heaven.

Amparo de la Niñez has represented Philadelphia well in many faraway places, including Honduras, Puerto Rico,

New York, Florida, Washington, Massachusets, and Conneticut, among other places, with its chorus, poetry, drawing, music, performances and handcraftings, among others.

Director, Philadelphia U.S. Export AssistanceAs the Director the Philadelphia U.S. Export Assistance Center, Ceballos oversees programs in Pennsylvania and Delaware, which provide customized overseas services to evaluate global opportunities, identify and qualify potential business partners. Ceballos also establishes program partnerships with state and federal agencies and other public and private sector entities to create an efficient export assistance network for U.S. companies. In 2005, Ceballos was awarded for contributions in developing, organizing, and implementing highly substan-tive outreach activities with trade partners in the Southwest Pacific Network and also received NASBITE’s certification for Leadership in International Trade for passing the NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional exam. Ceballos received his Masters of Arts in International Studies from the Claremont Graduate University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Minor in International Relations from the University of California, Riverside.

Hiram CarmonaManager of Housing Counseling, City of PhiladelphiaFor the past seventeen years, Hiram has been employed at the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Housing and Community Development, where he currently manages the City’s housing counseling program and oversees its involvement in the nationally recognized Philadelphia Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Program. Hiram directs the work of over eighty housing counselors located at twenty-eight Philadelphia, community based organizations – one of the largest such programs in the country. Since the rise of the mortgage foreclosure crisis, the Diversion Program has helped save over 4,500 Philadelphia homeowners from losing their homes to foreclosure. Carmona was the first president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. He obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Puerto.

Carmona es responsable de la supervisión de más de 80 consejeros de vivienda, ubicados en 28 organización comunitarias en la ciudad. Desde el 2008 el Programa ha ayudado a más de 4,500 propietarios a mantener sus casas. Elizabeth Conde FrazierVice President of Education & Dean, Esperanza CollegeAs Dean of the college, Dr. Conde-Frazier is responsible for setting the vision, the strategic direction, and providing leadership and management for the programs and faculty. Previously, she was professor of religious education at the Claremont School of Theology and taught Hispanic/Latino/a theology at the Latin American Bible Institute, in California. As professor, she mentored Latino/a students and wrote in the areas of multicultural education, Latina feminist theology, the spirituality of the scholar and issues of justice as they relate to education. She is the founder of the Orlando E. Costas Hispanic and Latin American Ministries Program at Andover Newton Theological School. She has over ten years experience as an ordained pastor and has been a bilingual teacher. She has a PhD form Boston College, a Master in Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

Joe GarciaCommanding Officer of the Communication Center, Temple UniversityJoe Garcia is a 23-year veteran of the Temple University Police Department, where he holds the rank of Captain and title of Commanding Officer of the Communication Center, the Training and the External Relations Units. He serves as Commissioner for the Philadelphia Police Advisory Commission, an official civilian oversight agency tasked with helping to improve the relationship between the Philadelphia Police Department and the Community. Joe actively served on the Board of the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. Joe is also co-founder and active member of Latino Lines Redistricting Coalition. He has earned an undergradu-ate degree, in English, from Temple University and a master’s degree in Administra-tion of Human Services from Chestnut Hill College.

Chief Operating Officer, Children’s Crisis Treatment Center - CcTCIleana began working at CcTC 15 years ago and joined the agency’s management team where she built the Behavioral Health and Rehabilitation Services (BHRS) at CcTC. She has since led the creation of CcTC’s Targeted Case Manage-ment Program, Family Based Program, Summer Therapeutic Enrichment Program, and all of CcTC’s School Based programs. More recently, Ileana spearheaded a specialized intensive case management program aimed at serving Mexican immigrant families in the Eastern South Philadelphia region. Ileana serves on the board of Taller Puertorriqueño and served on the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission Vulnerable Chil-dren’s Committee as well as several other committees within the children’s behavioral health system. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Temple University, and her Master’s in Human Services-Psychology from La Salle University.

Community Activist, business ownerFrom humble beginnings, Enerolina come to the United States from Domini-can Republic, looking for a better future. In her natal country, she studied to become a book keeper and a secretary

at the Santa Cruz Insitute. Enerolina owns a small business, is a paralegal focused on

immigration issues and a community activist very involved in local politics and issues that

affect the Dominican community throughout the city. She is a member of the Dominican Grocery

Association; Dominican Festival and the Olney Red Birds American Legion Baseball, among other organizations.

serving as the highest educational leader. In her role she oversees the budgeting of all ASPIRA schools, hires all school leadership positions, ensures profes-sional development of school staff, evaluates school and student data to drive instruction at ASPIRA schools, ensures quality implementation of instruc-tion based on data and best practices, collaborates

with ASPIRA’s many community stakeholders, and raises additional funds for the schools as needed.

In 2009, Evelyn co-founded ASPIRA’s Bilingual Cyber Charter School which serves students from grades K-12 in the entire state of Pennsylvania. Nuñez holds a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and a Principal Certification from Cheyney University.

Executive Director, Casa MonarcaCurrently Dalia is the Center Director of the Lassin Learning Center, a Nationally Accredited Jewish Day Care. She is also the Executive Director of the cultural center Casa Monarca, whose mission is to promote and preserve Mexican culture and tradition through artistic and educational programs. In 2005 she was the coordinator of a bilingual program founded by United Way called Playschool. A year later, Dalia took the leadership of the only bilingual and bicultural preschool center in the area; the program was founded by the School District of Philadelphia in partnership with The Preschool Project. Dalia O’Gorman, originally from Mexico City, graduated from Guanajuato University with a BS in Nursing.

With the help of his wife Carmen, they took a leap of faith and created an outpatient physical therapy practice called La Fortaleza. Fortaleza became the first and only bilingual practice, and one of the most successful businesses in the area. La Fortaleza Centers now own and operate two outpatient rehabilitation centers and one of the largest Fitness Centers in Philadelphia. Jose Rivera has also served as vice president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and in numerous community boards.

Vivian OrtizPresident of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women - NACOPRWNACOPRW is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the participation of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic women in their social, economic and political life in the United States and Puerto Rico. Vivian Ortiz is a Chartered Financial Consultant with Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC in Philadelphia. Vivian is involved with a numerous community and civic organization including: The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Pennsyl-vania Statewide Latino Coalition (PSLC), the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the Women’s Medical Fund (Board Member), American Cancer Society (Hispanic Advisory Committee member), Susan G. Fortaleza se convirtió en la primera y única práctica bilingüe, y uno de los negocios más exitosos en el área. Los Centros Fortaleza ahora poseen y operan dos centros ambulatorios de rehabilitación y uno de los más grandes centros de gimnasia física en Filadelfia. José Rivera ha servido también como vicepresidente de la Cámara Hispana de Comercio, y de un sin número de mesas directivas en la comunidad.

Anita Santos Singh PhDExecutive Director of Philadelphia Legal Assistance - PLASantos-Singh is the Executive Director of Philadelphia Legal Assis-tance (PLA), the federally funded civil legal aid program in Philadelphia. Prior to joining PLA, Santos- Singh was a staff attorney at Community Legal Services, Inc., in the consumer-housing unit. Santos-Singh has been recognized by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. She is also the recipient of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania’s “La Justicia” Award and the “Orgullo Award” from the Latino Law Students Association at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Law. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania, Friends of Farmworkers and CEIBA. Santos-Singh received her B.A. in Interna-tional Relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986 and her law degree from the University Of Michigan School Of Law in 1989.

Before, she was Deputy Commissioner of the De-partment of Human Services in Philadelphia, where she was appointed in 2008. In that position Cynthia managed the Division of Community Based Prevention Services and served as the lead for the alignment of all prevention services in the Department and provided leadership on key City wide initiatives. Congreso is one of the leadign organizations in the state of Pennsylvania providing services to the Latino community, and doing advocacy on behalf of this community at a national level. Born in Puerto Rico in 1973, Cynthia holds a Fine Arts Degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile Alabama.

Daniel KutnerConsul General of Israel to the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United StatesPrior to assuming his post as Consul General of Israel in Phila-delphia, Kutner headed the Bureau for Economic and Strategic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Center for Political Research. Kutner has held different positions in that Ministry, including Director for Palestinian and Jordanian Affairs, Director of the Division for Egypt and North Africa, acting director of the Division for Syrian and Lebanese Affairs, and Senior Analyst for North Africa and Syria. Kutner holds an M.A. cum laude in History of the Muslim Countries (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 1986), a M.A. cum laude in Political Science/National Security Studies (University of Haifa, 2005), and a dual-major B.A. in European History and Middle Eastern Studies (Hebrew University, 1977). He is a graduate of the National Security College (2005), the Senior Inter-Service Intelligence Course (2002) and other specialized programs. Kutner was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and im-migrated to Israel in 1973.

He has been Managing Director for the City of Philadelphia, a member of the Mayor’s Cabinet that serves in the capacity of chief operating officer for the City. Previously, Mr. Ramos was the City Solicitor in charge of the City’s Law Department. A native Philadelphian, Ramos is a 1992 cum laude graduate from the University of Michigan Law School, a 1987 undergraduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and a 1983 graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia. Alfredo Calderon Santini

Ruben Amaro, Jr

President and CEO, ASPIRA of PAAlfredo Calderón has served as ASPIRA’s Chief Executive Officer since December 2000. Calderón is responsible for adhering to and fulfilling the mission of ASPIRA of PA, including the overall supervision and operation of the business and affairs of ASPIRA of PA and its property and facilities (over one million square feet of Real Estate). Calderón is accountable for a staff of over 600 full time and part time employees. Prior to leading ASPIRA of PA, he served as the Director of Operations for the Private Industry Council of Philadelphia, and also served in the US Army’s Foreign Intelligence Activity for 12 years. Calderón holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from St. Joseph’s University and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Under Calderon’s leadership, ASPIRA of PA has grown from a 1.5 million dollar operation to a 55 million dol-lar corporation, with four Charter Schools and a Head Start/Pre-K program educating near 3,000 students.Calderon has many hobbies, but is very passionate about scuba diving, and is a licensed diver. Calderon has a daughter Melissa who resides in North Carolina.

Senior Vice President and General Manager Philadelphia PhilliesRuben Amaro, Jr. assumed his current position of Senior Vice President and General Manager in November 2008 after serv-ing as Assistant General Manager for 10 seasons. After being selected by the Angels in the 11th round of the 1987 draft,

Ruben made his major league debut with the club in 1991. Following that season, he was traded to his hometown Phillies, where he spent five of his final seven major

league seasons (1992-93, 96-98). Ruben played for both the 1993 NL Champion Phillies and the 1995 AL Champion Indians. In 1996, he ranked third among NL pinch-hitters with a .387 average. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ruben was a bat-boy for the Phillies from 1980-83 when his father, Ruben Amaro Sr., a former shortstop with the club, was First Base Coach. In 1987, he earned a BS degree in human biology from Stanford

University and was a member of the 1987 NCAA Baseball Championship team. Under his tenure, the Phillies won four Division titles, two consecu-tive NL pendants, two consecutive trips to the World Series, and a World Championship in 2008.

Romuo Diaz has been a Vice President with PECO Energy since 2009. Before, he served as the City Solicitor of Philadelphia by appointment of Mayor John F. Street, since April 2005. The City Solicitor is the City’s chief legal officer, the head of the City’s Law Department, and a member of the Mayor’s Cabinet. As City Solicitor, Romulo Diaz led City efforts to prepare for and implement gaming estab-lishments in Philadelphia; negotiated agreements for Wireless Philadelphia; facilitated a comprehensive litigation settlement with the billboard industry; and developed foreclosure policies and tax payment plans to protect low-income homeowners, while achieving record collections. Mr. Diaz joined the City of Philadelphia Law Department in March 2002, and had previously served as Chair of the Commercial and Regulatory Law Group. For most of his career, Mr. Diaz lived in Washington, DC, where he held numerous legal, management and policy positions. He

was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Assistant Administrator for Management at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mr. Diaz received his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law and B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is licensed to practice in

Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the District of Columbia and Texas. Since November 2004, he has served as

a Member of the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority by appointment of then Governor Ed Rendell.

Director, Women’s Bureau, U.S. Department of LaborSara Manzano-Díaz was nominated by President Ba-rack Obama in 2009, and unanimously confirmed in early 2010 by the United States Senate, as the 16th Director of the Women’s Bureau at the United States Department of Labor. The Women’s Bureau was created by Congress in 1920, the same year women were granted the right to vote. It is the only federal agency exclusively mandated to serve and promote the interests of working women.Previously, Sara was appointed by Governor Edward Rendell as Deputy Secretary of State for Regulatory Programs at the Pennsylvania Department of State. From 1995 to 2002, Ms. Manzano-Díaz worked in various capacities at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development including as Deputy General Counsel for Civil Rights and Litigation.Ms. Manzano-Díaz has served as Assistant Attorney General in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations and Communications from Boston University and a Juris Doctorate degree from Rutgers University School of Law.

Maria Quiñones Sanchez Councilwoman, Philadelphia City Council - 7th Councilmatic DistrictMaria is the first Latino elected to a District City Council seat and the first Latina to ever serve on Philadelphia City Council. She is a veteran activist with many years of public and volunteer service. She is a tireless advocate for economic development, women’s and workers’ rights, living wages, voter registration, and health care among others. Quiñones-Sánchez was a former Regional Director of Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), serving Pennsylvania and Delaware states. Maria is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition and served as the first female Executive Director of ASPIRA, the largest Latino educational institution in Pennsylvania. Maria is a graduate of Philadelphia public school system and earned a Master’s in Human Services at Lincoln University in 1992. She is married to Tomas Sanchez and have two sons, Edgar and Tomasito.

As a business leader, Trujillo plays a major role in public and private economic development.As City Solicitor, Trujillo represented the Mayor, City Council and all departments, agencies and commissions of the City of Philadelphia. During Trujillo’s tenure, he played a principal role in the planning of the Republican National Convention, advised the Mayor in implementing the Neighbor-hood Transformation Initiative and represented the City in the development of the Eagles stadium and Phillies ballpark. Trujillo has led economic devel-opment and trade missions to Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Panama and Colombia. Trujillo is active locally and nationally in civic and business matters. Trujillo served as the First Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer of the National Council of La Raza Board of Directors as well as on its Audit Committee. He currently serves on the Strategic Investment Fund for La Raza, Inc. board. Trujillo is a member of the New American Alliance and its Finance Commit-tee.
