(Revised) Resume (A Profile) Sajjada Nashin Dargah Hazrath Khaja Bandanawaz (Rh) Hazrath Khaja Bandanawaz Gesudiraz (Rh) was born on the 30th July 1321 / 4th Rajab 721H and passed away on 1st November 1422 AD / 16th Z i _ qa dah 825AH at the age of 105 Lunar years. His ancestors in Khurasan were popularly known as the “Sayyids with long locks”. Thus he retained his surname of Gi _ su _ dira _ z (literally, long locks) in India also. His name was Sayyid Muh . ammad Al- H . usayni _ , and was also known as Bandanawa _ z (one who comforts other human beings). He was the sixth vicegerent in line from the great Chishti of Ajmer, Shaykh Khaja Ghari _ bnawa _ z. He was the successor to Shaykh Nas . i _ ruddin Mah . mu _ d, known as Chira _ gh-i Dilli _ . He had moved to Gulbarga in 1401 AD at the age of 80 years from Delhi. His mausoleum was built by Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali Bahmani in the middle of the 15th Century A.D. Every year during the Urs (death anniversary) lakhs and lakhs of people converge to pay homage to the saint, displaying perfect communal harmony and national integration. It has worked for the upliftment of all irrespective of caste, community or religion. Moreover, Khaja Education Society fosters communal harmony, peace, tolerance, equality, love, understanding and truthfulness. Khaja Education Society offers modern education aimed at all the sections of the Society. It has given primary importance to women’s education, having established girl’s high schools, pre-university and degree colleges (both Arts & Science). In all it manages more than 15 educational institutions, begining from the pre-primary to Engineering, Medical education and a 500 bed Khaja Bandanawaz Teaching & General Hospital. We strive to continue to be of service to future generations and hope to tide over these difficult times with God’s grace. The saint is known internationaly, and his works are studied and researched on not only in India but in the universities of Europe and North America. a renowned Chishti Sufi of Gulbarga. He was 6th in lineage from the famousGharibnawaz of Ajmer. Is the 23rd direct descendant of the sufi saintHazrath Khaja Bandanawaz.

...to the daughter of Nawab Syed Kazim Hussain, better known asKazim Yar Jung, who was from the nobility of Hyderabad. He was the Minister inWaiting to the Nizam VII of Hyderabad State.

EDUCATION :

l l l l l An erudite scholar as the academic graph shows. Has keenly pursuededucation, steadily earning degrees from Senior Cambridge(Cambridge University) onwards in 1962.

Graduation & Post Graduation :

Master of Arts Graduated in Arabic, Sociology and English Literature from OsmaniaUniversity in 1965 followed by Post graduation in Arabic language andliterature in 1967 from the same university.

Master of Arts Joined the famous Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University inMontreal, Canada in September 1972 and completed Second Postgraduation in Islamic studies in 1976 specialising in Sufism.

(Doctorate of Has worked consistently on the topic of Sufism throughout the academic Philosophy) career at McGill University and the Doctoral thesis is also on this subject.

The research dissertation is on the concept of love and oneness in theSufism of Gesudiraz. First part of the work is an annotated English

translation of the treatise, Risa_lah-i ‘Ishqi

_yyah or also known as H. aza

al-Quds. The second part is an analysis of the work, including a discussionof and a comparison to earlier non-Indian Sufi masters. Dissertation isin progress.

Doctorate of Was awarded by Belford University, U.S.A. in 2004, based on the Arts research done and contributions to the field of Islamic Studies (Sufism).

Doctorate of Was awarded by Gulbarga University, Gulbarga (Karnataka) Letters on 18th Feb. 2008 for contributions to the field of Education and

1984-86 Islamic culture quarterly is a renowned research journal onIslamic studies published from Hyderabad. It was founded by the NizamVII of Hyderabad in the year 1927. The journal had to be given a new lifeand getup. Hence a two year revitalization program was successfullytaken up in the year 1984 as a project.

Was a Director of the Project.

1985 - Is also on the Board of Directors, Nasr Education Society, KhairatabadHyderabad. Is one of the driving forces that work towards theenhancement and maintenance of high educational standards in theinstitutions run by this Society in Hyderabad. 1980 - 2007 Khaja Education Society, registered in the year 1966, under the IndianSocieties Act, 1960, was founded by Padmashree Janab Hazrat SyedShah Muhammad Hussaini in the year 1958. Initially Bi Bi Raza GirlsSchool was inaugurated. Gradually educational institution after institutionwas established. In 1980, Khaja Bandanawaz College of Engineering tookshape and in the year 2000 Khaja Bandanawaz Institute of MedicalSciences was given permission by the Govt. of India. Today, there aremore than 15 institutions, including a 500 Bed Khaja Bandanawaz Teachingand General Hospital which are being managed by the Khaja EducationSociety. A high standard of education is maintained and each yearapproximately 10,000 to 12,000 students totally are catered in theinstitutions of the Society. It is a service oriented Society, and it caters toeconomically backward classes in most of its institutions.

As a Vice President of Khaja Education Society, is all-encompassingand ranges from over-seeing the running of its Professional institutionsto deciding matters regarding construction, administration, finances andpolicy-making of institutions run by the society.

Is the Chairman of most of the Sub-committees of the Society.

iii. al-Sala_m ‘Alaykum. An analysis of some frequently used terminologies

and idioms.

The work consist of more than 50 phrases, terminologies, idioms of Arabic, Persian andUrdu languages which are used in day to day life of Muslim communities. It consists ofnot only a gramatical analysis of each but its translation and usage. The work will clarifycertain misunderstandings and misconceptions regarding the above terminologies. ACHIEVEMENTS

As SAJJADA NASHIN of the Dargah Hazrath Khaja Bandanawaz ;

After inheriting the mantle of the Sajjada Nashin on the 3rd April 2007, series ofprogressive reforms in the infrastructure and functioning of the Dargah’s surroundingaimed to provide facilities of an unprecendented nature, not seen in the 600 years oldhistory of the shrine were introduced. Each reform has been made keeping uppermostin consideration the comfort and convenience of the visitors to the Dargah;

New Facilities provided :

1. The public utility washrooms and toilets were increased in numbered from 20to 30 and the interiors made spacious.

2. An entire wing of modern rooms, single and double bedrooms and suites, fullyfurnished and equipped with all amenities equivalent to a 3-star hotel havebeen constructed for those who desire a more comfortable stay.

3. The age-old pond for ablution has been fitted with electric water filters thatkeep the water clean and sparkling.

4. A large square canopy (45’ x 45’) of tensile fabric (imported material) hasbeen installed to cover the entire pond so that leaves and other matter doesnot fall into the water used for ablutions.

5. A total of 5 large canopies (15’x15’) of steel and tensile fabric have beenplaced at strategic locations to offer protection from rain and the hot sun tothe visitor.

6. One large canopy (78.5’ x 29’)spans the space between the mosque and theDargah providing shade to the worshippers during congregational prayers,and all other time.

7. The mosque has been provided with air-conditioners (13 tonnes) so that thepeople can pray, read and rest protected from hot weather conditions.

8. The large dome of the Dargah which houses the tomb of the Saint HazrathKhaja Bandanawaz, has itself been fitted recently with a 76 tonne air-conditionerto ease the heat generated during the gathering of large crowds.

9. To handle the electricity needs of the Dargah complex a 250 KVA transformerhas been installed that caters to the Dargah alone.

10. For the convenience of the aged and the disabled who cannot traverse throughthe vast premises on foot, a motorized ferry as the ones available on airportshas been provided whose services can be availed free of cost.

11. Heat resistance flooring around the Dargah provide great relief to the bare-footed devotees during the scorching summer.

12. The earlier age-old rooms on the Darga premises have now had attachedwashrooms built in them.

Improved functioning :

13. Prioritizing the maintenance of hygienic surroundings an automated ‘walk-behind’ sweeper sweeps the premises at regular intervals, reducing the use ofman-power and increasing efficiency.

14. An automated “Ride-on” scrubber cleans the flooring of the Dargah and removesdirt.

15. For the security of the Dargah premises and the thousands of visitors everyday, 17 CCTV cameras cover all the sensitive places in the Dargah complexmonitored by two screens.

16. Noiseless, eco-friendly generators ensure an un-interrupted electrical supplyto the Dargah complex.

17. All the old graves of the earlier Sajjadas and their kin have been repaired andproperly covered.

Khaja Bazaar :

The organisation of the industrial exhibition (Khaja Bazaar) in connection withthe annual Urs of the Saint has been streamlined, vastly improving the primitiveconditions under which earlier the vendors used to set up the stalls.

18. Proper stalls with tin roofs are now being provided to the merchants whogather here from the North, North-East, Western and Central parts of India.

19. A separate 250 KVA transformer has been installed that caters solely to theexhibition.

20. Bitumin-covered roads have been laid between rows of shops, reducing dustand pollution and providing ease of walking to the large crowd that visits theexhibition every day for a month.

Projects for the Future :

1. Providing cooled and purified RO treated water throughout the Dargah premisesfor the visitor.

2. Facilitating research in the age-old library attached to the Darul Uloom whichhas already been digitized. Scholars who are on study visits for research onthe teachings and books of Hazrath Khaja Bandanawaz (Rh) will be providedwith facilities to aid their research. Plans are to transfer valuable ancienttreatises on micro-film to preserve the life of these ancient books.

3. For identification, all the graves of the kin buried within the Dargah will beprovided with name plates that will give details of the person buried.

4. The number of public conveniences washrooms and toilets will be furtherincreased to 100 numbers to cater to the large number of visitors to theDargah.

5. The repainting of the interiors of the main dome of the saint will be taken upby experts who will also restore the original colours and old floral motifs whilethey repaint.

6. There is a keen effort to develop the Arabic school that would culminate into anArabic College. A full-fledged department of translation is also planned. Planningis underway to develop the infrastructure for the college, so that a Jami‘aBandanawaziyya becomes the outcome of this effort.

ACHIEVEMENTS

As PRESIDENT of Khaja Education Society;

Has been associated with the Khaja Education Society right from its inceptionand has worked for its improvement tirelessly as Vice President of the Society, themost significant among his achievements has been obtaining the permission for theMedical College in the year 2000, and taking the courageous initiative to begin it. Afterassuming charge as President in April 2007, focussed upon increasing the options forstudents in the Engineering stream.

1. The subject of Aeronautical Engineering was introduced in 2006, the first collegein Karnataka to introduce this subject. This proved immensely popular bringingaccolades to the K.B.N. College of Engineering when a student of the 2011batch topped the University (Visveswariah Technological University).

2. Petrochemical Engineering was introduced in the year 2011, again the first timean Engineering College in Karnataka introduced this course.

3. The computer lab which had been personally designed by Dr. Khusro Hussainiand which he had had equipped in 1990 is continuously updated and improved.Today it has 400 computers.

4. To increase the visibility of the Khaja Education Society’s profile in the communityand the world outside, a newspaper was started in 2007; The K.B.N. Times(Urdu) whose circulation and readership base extends beyond Gulbarga toHyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.

5. To further the scope of academics at the degree level for women, a Post-graduate centre was started in 2009 with permission of, and affiliated to, theKarnataka State Women’s University, Bijapur. (KSWUB).

6. Two subjects were introduced at the P.G. level : English Literature and MassCommunication and Journalism. A fully functional language lab. was equippedfor the English P.G. Department, and a first grade Library of books in Englishliterature. At the district level, this is the only Post-graduate Centre for Englishin a private UGC affiliated college, the other one being at the GovernmentArts & Science College, Gulbarga.

7. The Mass Communication and Journalism Department is equipped with astate-of-the art Studio, Edit lab., and sound proof recording room. There is aprojector room with an 8 x 8 screen and digital projector. A computer lab.equipped with computers and internet facility has been provided for students.

8. The Mass Communication and Journalism Department (MC&J) also has amulti-media lab. with 10 computers, a print-lab. with A3 size colour laserprinter, a still photo studio and dark room.

Both the P.G. department students have done exceedingly well at the Universitylevel, two students in MC&J topping the KSWUB and seven students from thedepartment of English securing a First Class with Distinction.

9. For promoting the Sufi philosophy of tolerance, love and brotherhood, aprogramme was also started on Zee Salam a channel of Zee TV entitled“Bazm-i Awliya” in 2011. The programme proved to be immensely popularand was much applauded, 45 episodes were aired, each one having beenwritten, researched and directed by himself.

10. To increase the efficiency of the Society’s functioning Dr. Khusro Hussaini theadministration was streamlined by ;

a) Besides the Secretary General, appointing three secretaries who wouldeach look after the portfolios of Academics, Finance and Administration,and are in-charge of certain number of institutions each.

b) a personal Secretariat was formed to handle the large correspondence,national and international, of the President.

11. In a constant endeavour to increase efficiency and modernise the 50 year oldKhaja Education Society, electronic equipment is widely utilized from anelectronic surveillance system to bio-metric ID cards.

12. A state-of-the art Auditorium with a 750 seating capacity, air-condition, strobe-lights, arc-lights, projector room, surround sound and all amenities has beenbuilt where national and international seminars and functions of the variousinstitutions of the Society are held, regarded as the best auditorium in NorthKarnataka.

13. The Society office, girls hostel and the major institutions have been equippedwith noiseless eco-friendly generators for un-interrupted power supply.

14. The President’s application for establishing a Khaja Bandanawaz GesudarazChair at the Gulbarga University has been approved by the Syndicate of theUniversity and awaits permission of the Ministry of Education. This will providean impetus to the study of Sufi Philosophy at the academic level nationallyand internationally.

15. I.T. services for the institutions of the Society have been introduced whichprovide high speed internet connectivity with Wi-Fi.

16. Showcasing the 50 years of the society at the National level.The Golden Jubilee of the Khaja Education Society was marked by a scintillatingceremony in which 11 institutions of the Society participated. An elaborateExhibition showcased the achievemnets of the institutions. The dignitaries ofGulbarga in the Academic, Political and Bureaucratic fields were invited alongwith the First Secretary and Cultural Attache from the Embassy of the RoyalKingdom of Saudi Arabia as Chief Guests of the Valedictory function. TheGolden Jubilee Celebrations began in the year 2008, comprising of variouscompetitions, seminars and events. The Valedictory function was finally heldon 21st Feb. 2011.

17. The Khaja Bandanawaz Gold Cup in Cricket & Hockey for Under 16Boys.The Khaja Education Society stepped into the arena of sports in a big way byholding (for the first time in the entire North Karnataka region, an Under-16Cricket and Hockey tournament for boys on the National level in Jan. 2012.State level teams from four zones of the country participated in this event.The unique feature of this tournament was its aim of unearthing un-exposedtalent among the young sportsmen in the country. The awards were ofinternational standards, Gold cups and cash dividends and the latest twowheelers. National level sportsmen and dignitaries attended the matches andfunctions. The tournaments gained national recognition through the widemedia coverage.

Projects for the future :

1. Acquiring a F.M. Radio licence from the Union Government which will functionas a Community Radio station, an important aspect of regional development.

2. Starting a newspaper in English.

3. Applying for an autonomous private University status for the institutions ofthe society to be named Khaja Bandanawaz University.

4. An ultra-modern Society Office complex is under construction which will beequipped with the latest equipment and office automation.

5. As a 50 year old venerable Minority educational institution, there is keeninterest to strengthen the economic opportunities of the Minority Communityand further uplift its status by establishing K.B.N. (Khaja Bandanawaz)Minority Urban Co-operative Bank. An application to this effect wassubmitted on 11th June 2007 and recently re-submitted on 18th May 2012besides several re-submissions between 2007 and 2012. Hopefully it isfavourably under consideration, and pending only due to the ban imposed bythe RBI on granting licence to new banks.
