America's CoLLege Museums certainly fill s a niche, providing a fairly

comprehensive reference to ove r I ,700 museums and galleries. One

cannot say definitively, however, that this is a niche most institutions

would need to fill. For this second edition (1 st ed., University and CoLLege Museums, GaLleries, and Related FaciLities, C H , Dec'%, 34-1904), the

material presented presumably has been updated with current contact

information , facilities information, and other relevant changes, along with

the addition of severa l hundred new entries. Four new indexes (much

needed searching tools) are included: University and Museum Index,

Museum and University Index, Geographic Index, and Key Personnel

Index . Entries themselves are bare bones, speaking to collections in

generalities only and providing essential who, what, and where derail s.

Some entries have errors; e.g., typos appear in the Web addresses for

Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art and Niagara University's

Cas tellani Art Museum. 111at as ide, this directory does not appear to

1l1is two-volume second edi tion of the EncycLopedia of Creativity is

no mere update of the first (CH , M ar'OO, 37-3635) . All the articles are

revised versions of those in the earlier edition , and appear to be much

more in depth and comprehensive in scope. This work is ambitious in

that it no t only covers professions embodying crea tivity (acting, dance,

film , music, theater, writing), but also features discuss ions of thought

processes (intelligence, knowledge, play, prodigies), education (programs,

co urses, talent, teaching), and cognition (altered states, attentio n,

cognitive styles, flow, metacognition , problem solving). Other topics

include personal/interpersonal crea tivity, neuroscience, theoretical

perspectives , menta l/phys ical health issues, and organizational/societal

topics. Also included are biographies of creati ve, eminent fi gures

(none of whom are li ving) , but they seem out of sync with the rest of

the content. Arranged alphabetically by subject, articles offer outlines,

glossa ries , cross- references, further reading suggestions, and lists of

relevant websites. Volume 2 has a detailed index. Whereas this work

focuses on current ideas, the EncycLopedia of Giftedness, Creativity, and TaLent, edited by Barbara Kerr (CH , D ec'09 , 47- 178 1), is more basic,

providing hismrical co ntexts for the crea tivity concepts covered . This new

1l1e third edition of "Banned Books" features 4 1 new titles,

44-35 98, 44-35 98a, 44-3598b, 44-3598c) to nearly 500 suppressed

books. The set includes several popular contemporary works, such as

the entire Harry Potter series , Dan Brown's TheDa Vinci Code, Phillip

Pullman's His Dar!? MateriaLs trilogy, and Stephanie M eyer's TwiLight se ries . 1l1e large number of international titles indicates censo rship's

pervas iveness across cultures. All 12 additions to On PoLiticaL Grounds, for example, are international in origin , including works by Nobel Prize

new, troubling trends. Sova suggests an increase in "preventative banning," wherein officials "neglect ro purchase a book that has aroused controversy." In such cases, the books are never made available, which makes documenting instances of suppression extremely difficult. Likewise, Bald describes "preemptive censorship by publishers motivated by fear of violence,'' citing Jytte Klausen's lhe Cartoons Ihat Shook the World (CH, May' I 0, 47-5266) as an example. The book discusses the protests over the controversial publication of 12 cartoons of Muhammad by a Danish newspaper in 2005. Klausen's publisher (Yale University Press) decided to remove examples of the images, fearing they might reignite the furor. \Vhen the Index on Censorship <http:/ I www.indexoncensorship.org/> (CH, Dec' II, 49-1834) published an interview with Klausen about Yale's censorship, it likewise refused to publish the cartoons. -Il1at such esteemed publishers engage in seH~ censorship suggests the troubling extent of the censorship issue. As in earlier editions, every entry in this set contains a summary of the book, a censorship history, and a selection of further readings. Each volume includes a list of all titles covered by the series, arranged under the four main categories; however, a single, alphabetical list with category crossreferences would be more useful, given the lack of a cumulative index. This minor complaint aside, the superb content of these titles makes them an excellent addition to libraries concerned with censorship issues. This set is indispensable for student projects during Banned Books Week.

Literary and cultural critic Persky (Capilano Univ., North Vancouver) offers "a sort of demonstration 'sampler'" of comments on recent good books that, in his opinion, have not received sufficient attention. To support his argument that "the decline of book reading and the deterioration of knowledge" is at the point of"an impending cultural catastrophe," Persky touches briefly on a vety wide range of books that "provide a sufficiently sustained reading experience that makes possible informed engagement with the political, cultural, and moral issues of our time." Writers whose works are addressed in some detail include Larry McMurtry, Philip Roth, Javier Cercas, Orhan Pamuk, Daniel Mendelsohn, Richard Dawkins, Edward Said, J. M. Coetzee, Jose Saramago, Paul Krugman, Naomi Klein, Joseph Stiglitz, and Amos Oz. This book touches on many other fiction and nonfiction works in passing. Seeing a "paradoxical dilemma" in the fact that today more writing-but less reading-than ever takes place, Persky ultimately questions the capacity of a predominantly digital culture to transmit sufficient historical memory and the critical discussion and reflection that he believes are needed to support a

democratic society. Summing Up: Recommended. ** Graduate students and researchers/faculty.-}. K Bracken, Kent State University

[Visited Nov' 11] In the age of the simple search box, do researchers have the patience to navigate a directory of Web resources presented in a hierarchical structure? Prop_y/aeum, which is a collaborative project between the Bavarian State Library and the libraries of Heidelberg, Humboldt, and 'Iltebingen Universities and other scholarly organizations,

ofFers the best of both approaches. '[he site is organized in nine broad subject areas, e.g., Egyptology, Byzantine Studies, and Classical Philology. Each of these topic areas is further divided into rype of research. For most North American students, th<: Library Catalogues section, which offers links to suggested library collections, and New Acquisitions, which presents lists of recent receipts at the Bavarian State Archive, will not be very useful. The Subject Databases and Journals/ Articles sections will prove confusing, as they list a great deal of licensed content that users may not have access to through their home institutions.

Much more useful are the lists and descriptions in the Digital Collections and Internet Resources sections. The latter are drawn from Kirke, a catalog of 5,000-plus websites that can be explored by region, time period, and type of resource. The number and range of sites covered is impressive; the emphasis is on scholarly collections with substantial content. l11e site search offers a federated search across many difierent databases, as well as advanced tools like a multilingual keyboard. English versions are available throughout, with only occasional German-only database search commands or website descriptions. Though this site overlaps with text collections such as the Internet Histor_y Sourcebooks Project dmp:/ /v.,vw.fordham.edu/Halsall/index.asp> and with gateways such as the Voice of the Shuttle (CH, Sep'05, 43-0083), Pmpylaeum's breadth of coverage and European inclination will make it a worthwhile visit for the conscientious scholar. U RL: http://www. ibi blio.org/folkindex/index.htm [Visited Nov' ll] Folk M1Hic Index is an online bibliographic database

that compiles citations of print and recorded sources for folk music.

(Though never explicitly stated, the focus is North American and Anglo fdk traditions). An impressive individual eftort by librarian/musician

Keefer. it certainly fills the need for a centralized c-resource on this topic. The database provides rhorough indexes that arc arranged and cross

referenced in over six coherent presentation schemes: those for song titles ;wd performers are displayed in standard discographic sryle. Keder also

provides alternate titles for songs, alternate versions (music or words), and links to related pieces. Last updated injune 2011, information

is categorized as Music Titles (67.600-plus entries). Performers (about 27,000 entries), and Sources (5,000-plus indexed sources, including 475

print sources going back to c. 1867). Donors, including contemporary artists, provide over 575 ofthc sources.

Searching is limited to simple keywords for either perl~mncrs or music titles; results appear in a search frame. Browsing, where Keeter's

extensive indexing is best observed, is available by title or performer. The entries are cross-linked between performer and title, and to an index

of publishers. Overall, navigating the database is quite efionless but cftective. Built in Alpha4, with files residing on Keefer's horne compmer.

Launched in 2011, Key lsmes in Crime and Punishment, a new

reference series published by SAGE, consists of five volumes. Each

volume is a handbook that opens with an introduction by general

editor Chambliss. following an introduction are articles discussing

20 currently relevant subtopics, and an index. Volume 1, C1ime and

Criminal Behtu•ior, looks at crime through a variety of lenses: hisrorical

conrcxrs: policy implications: crimes "of a sensitive nature," such as hate

crimes and child abuse; victimless crimes; state crimes: and Internet

crime and copyright issues. Volume 2, Police and Law Enforcement,

discusses the controversies surrounding police and law enforcement

operations, including prof1ling, police brutality, Miranda rights, and

interrogation practices. Volume 3, Courts, Law, and }wtice covers

issues ranging from DNA evidence and penalties for driving under

the influence to polygraphs and restorative justice. Examples of topics

From volume 4, Corrections, include capital punishment and the death

penalty, clemency, crud and unusual punishment, early release, and life

sentences. In volume 5, }zweni!e Crime and }wtice, "each author presents

arguments in E1vor of various programs, treatments, and punishments,

counterbalancing rhem with opposing arguments."

Articles, ranging in length from 10 to 20 pages, are signed and feature

"ftrrrher reading" suggestions. Contributors arc primarily t!·om academia,

bur their language is clear and accessible to undergraduates. The table of

contents lists hmher subheadings f(Jr each article. Articles culminate in a

discussion of the pros and cons of a particular issue; for instance, volume

3 fCatures an article on DNA evidence, with the pro/con discussion

focused on support for or opposition to expanding DNi\ databases. These

discussions are similar to the pro/ con sections published in CQ Researcher

With over 300 maps covering seven major topics, this atlas provides

a cartographic inrerpretation of an area that accounrs for over 30 percent of North America. As the introduction stares, the atlas is a

visual complement to the Encyclopeditl 1:/the Great Plaim (C:H, Feb'05.

not r<mnd in the Encyclopedic~. 'fhe topics covered follow the uaditional

physical, historic, population, urban, rural, political, and economic

sequence of chapters f(mnd in most atlases. ·1 he maps arc crisp and well

defined, and generally easy to read and interpret, with consistency in the

cartographic layout, colors, and execution. On most of the individual

subtopics, there is a presentation of both an historic and contemporary

distribution of the phenomenon, e.g., wheat production in the 1S()Os and

2000/2001. -rhere are two significant shorrcomings. first is the page

ways, e.g., by general topic area or "room" (Reference Room, Free Forms

disclaimers concerning the reliability of the material offered.

On the negative side, the entries are undated, with no update

primarily a commercial site that sells legal forms specific to the states

of the union. for instance, a search for will/married/Illinois carne up

similar to 1XIikipedia (CH, Mar'O(), 43-3736) in that only those with

prior knowledge of a specific area can fully judge the reliability of an

entry. 'This website might be a source of general information, but it is

not suitable for students or practitioners. Laypeople with legal questions

would be best served by using the site's legal directory w locate an

In 1918, a white mob lynched Mary'llll'ner, a pregnant African American woman in Valdosta, Georgia. As with countless other lynchings, the perpetrators were never brought to justice. Armstrong (English, Univ. of South Horida, St. Petersburg) narrates Turner's

brutal murder and explores its legacy by examining the competing yet overlapping ways it has been remembered by activists, artists, journalists, and filmmakers. Between 1880 and 19:30, white mobs lynched 6 I black women in the South. But despite the history of racial violence against black women, Buckner argues, traditional scholarship on lynching has harned lynching as a story about white men, black men, and white women. 'fhe author compellingly illustrates that black women have been largely excised from historical and popular memories of lynching

because the crime has been gendered male and narrated as a crisis of black manhood. As Buckner notes, several recent studies have explored

the dynamics that produced female lynchings, among them Crystal Feimster's Southem Horron: \X/omen and the Politics ofRtzpe and Lynching

(CH, Apr'IO, 47-460:3). However, Armstrong's is the only study to systematically examine how a lynched black female has been remembered.
