Emerged in Malawi before Christianity, and as mankind is yearning for global peace, Islam, harmoniously co-exist with other religions. Though Islam is older in the history of Malawi, which precedes Christianity, Muslims in

Malawi are proud of not been arrogant over other faith groups.

Islam was the first gift of spiritual message, which came to Malawi in the 1800s. In the pursuit of positive contribution, Muslims in Malawi, participate in various social, cultural, political and developmental strides.

As partners in development, Muslim organizations and individuals, have assisted greatly in enhancing the education sector, by establishing primary, secondary, colleges such as Maryam Teachers Training College, International College for Business Management, MDI administered secondary schools, Africa Muslim Agency controlled secondary schools, Mai Aisha Academy and the list goes on where both Muslims and non-Muslims enjoy education.

Since development cannot be spearheaded by people with poor health, Islamic organizations invested in the health sector, by establishing health centers and clinics in the urban and rural areas. Paragons to such initiatives include, Madina Social Services, Limbe Muslim Jamat, having health centers and clinics servicing the underprivileged.

This publication conclude in reviewing perspective of Muslims in Malawi, labelling it to be a window full of cooperation, compassion, generosity, as it deals with Malawi’s multi-society, and multi-dimensional aspect of life. However, Muslims in Malawi ought to grow correspondingly to match the fact that Islam was the first spiritual gift ever arrived prior to the rest.

Islamic Information Bureaus are Islamic libraries. Currently, it operates in 3 districts of Lilongwe, Balaka and Blantyre. IIB is jubilant to inform its publics on events taking place. Details available on page 4, where you will also read about “Marriage Discourse.” The hot issue being:Children determined to sanction their father who is also determined to marry again after the death of their mother.

QIn today’s world ones well-being demands getting engaged in business. Yet one does not know the source of money of the buyers if it is from permissible source or

not. Are we under obligation to know the source of money of our customers?

A The business person is not obliged to enquire from the consumer of his source of money. It is permissible for a business person to accept payment from the buyers/

customers even if the business person does not know whether the consumer or buyer’s payment is from permissible source or not.

QHow can a Muslim remain optimistic in time of trials and afflictions? Is it true that whatever befalls a Muslim is for his own good? How can we learn not to despair?

ATrials and tribulations are part of human life. Allah Ta’ala reminds us in the Qur’an: And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives

and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient. (2:155) There are four possible reasons for trials or afflictions: (1) They are to test the faith (Imaan) of a person. (2) They happen to train or educate a true believer in patience and dependance on Allah Ta’ala and to face the difficult realities of life in this world. (3) They could befall to elevate the status of a true believer. (4) And they could be a result of one’s own sins and mistakes and compensation for one’s wrong doings. All in all, do not despair, because despair is the product of disbelief.

Q Home owners and shopkeepers tend to write names on dustbins so that they can identify theirs from other neighbours dustbins. Would it be wrong in writing names

that have Allah’s Attributes like Abdul Karim, AbdulGhafaar etc?

A It is not good to write names with Allah’s Attributes on things that will not be respected. There must be another way of putting identifications. As Muslims we should learn to respect

the Names and Attributes of Allah Ta’ala.

Q Can a Muslim out-source a bar to be run by a non-Muslim near and within the premises of his resort and hotel in order to keep clients and tourist patronise his place

without him benefiting in any form, like the rental, sales etc?

AAs it is Haraam (prohibited, not allowed) for Muslims to consume liquor so too it is Haraam (not permissible) to arrange for liquor consumption by non-Muslims. Under no

circumstances will it be permissible to out-source liquor sales.

QWhat is the difference between taking the Kuffar as friends and seeking their help. In other words are Muslims allowed to take the Kuffar as freinds or seek help?

ATaking the Kuffar as friends by way of supporting and aiding them for evil doing is not allowed. With regards to seeking their help that depends on the purpose to be served. If that

serves Muslim’s interest, there is nothing wrong with it, on condition that we must beware of their interest and treachery behind the help. If it does not serve any interest then it is not permissible.

WORDS OF WISDOM

It is not becoming of a Muslim to sit down and start praying for sustenance without attempting to earn it, he is well aware that gold and silver does not rain from the skies.

The one who steps back will not progress. The Strength in action is, never to put of what you can do today for tomorrow.

QAfter washing and clothing the dead body, some impurities emerged from the body. What will be the state of the

washing?

A The state of washing remains valid. It should not be repeated. It will suffice to cleanse only the part affected by the impurity.

QWe want to be guided on the tendency of using the terms practicing and non-practicing Muslims. In other words is

the use of the terms correct?

ATo begin with, a Muslim is the one who believes in the five pillars of faith. Everyone who believes is a Muslim with the same

rights and duties as all other Muslims, unless he/she destroys his/her Islam by saying or believing anything that implies Kufr and denounces the pillars of faith. We learn in the Sunnah that faith has many branches and varying degrees, which means that the believers will vary in the degrees according to the extent one follows these branches and levels. However, it is not permissible and not desirable to use the terms as a means of causing division among Muslim, creating dispute among them and stirring up disunity. Nor should one undermine any Muslim.

QWe observe that there is negligency or perhaps as a result of ignorance of not offering Tahiyyatul-Masjid (Salutation

Prayer upon arriving in the Masjid) What is your advice? In addition when are we allowed to leave it out?

ASalutation prayer (Tahiyyatul-Masjid) is a Sunnah of two Rakaats done upon entering the Masjid. It cannot be done if the the

obligatory prayer is in progress or it is time when prayer is forbidden; i.e. the actual time of sunrise and sunset, or when the sun is at meridian. It is the Sunnah that should be observed and not neglected.

QFollowig the tragic car accident of a couple who left young children, I have been given the responsibility of

keeping the wealth of the orphans. When is it permissible for gurdians to give the orphans their wealth?

AThe best time is when the guardian feels that they have become mature, that they will conduct their affairs well and not spend

it on Haraam things. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Qur’an: And test the orphans (as regards their intelligence) until they reach the age of marriage; if then you find sound judgement in them, release their property to them. (4:6)

QI have a friend who owes me money. He is in debt and is entitled for Zakaah. Could I write off the debt he owes me as being

my Zakaah payment. My Zakaah payment will be due soon?

AZakaah cannot be offset with a debt. The Zakaah will not be discharged by informing them that their debt has been cancelled

with Zakaah. You may give him your Zakaah and demand payment of the debt. With the Zakaah you gave him, he may settle his debt.

QThe incidents of committing suicide is not leaving page in our societies. What is the ruling on committing suicide in

the case of severe depression?

ASuicide is a major sin and the one who does that is faced with a warning of eternity in the Fire of Hell, where Allah will punish him

with the means that he used to commit suicide. The believer has to be patient and seek the help of Allah and understand that no matter hardship befalls him in this world, no matter how severe it is, the punishment of Hereafter is worse than it. A Muslim should ponder and realise that he is not the only one in this world who is affected by calamity, problems and hardships. Therefore severe or not severe we are not permitted to kill ourselves.

The Prophet said: Faith has seventy-odd – or sixty-odd – branches, the best of which is saying Laa ilaaha illa-Allaah, and the least of which is

removing something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.

(Bukhari & Muslim)

Q: My brother plans to marry a second wife without informing his first wife. I don’t know how long he plans to keep it secret. Can you please provide your counsel?

A: The requirementds of marriage are to be known. It is not allowed to keep marriage secret. Our counsel to your brother is that he should keep his family in peace rather than put himself in a condition where he cannot save the first marriage nor keep the second one. He should not just follow his desires, but he should be mindful of Allah Ta’ala and save his marriage and children.

Q: We are looking for balanced counsel as regards to a woman saying to her husband: I am not your wife?

A: Our counsel is as follows: If a woman says to her husband I am not your wife, it does not have any consequences, because according to Shariah, the wife does not have the ability to divorce her husband by Talaaq. Further, the wife should avoid using such words, because the husband may get angry and say the same to her, or he may confirm her words and say yes you are not my wife, or words of that effect. Marriage discourse as a counsel page believes that marital problems should be dealt with in an atmosphere of love and understanding, paying attention to each partner’s rights.

Q: My father’s age is 65 and my mother passed away. My father wants a second marriage but my brothers and sisters don’t like the idea. Are they right?

A: A father does not need the permission from his children to get married. He should however explain his situation and benefit from such a marriage. For example, if he tells his children the importance of getting married for the sake of preserving his own chastity, then it will help clarify his position though. So long as the father is still living he is free to marry.

Q: One Christian girl converted to Islam through Islamic Information Bureau, but her parents are totally against it. They do not allow her to bring Islamic literature in their home. Coincedentally there is a Muslim who wants to marry this girl. Are they allowed to get married without consent and agreement of her parents?

A: Yes, they can get married without the consent of her parents. Since the parents have this kind of prejudice against Islam, they are not expected to approve of the marriage in any way. Therefore, this falls under the category of abusive guardian in which case she can marry.

Islamic Information Bureaus offers library services, open to Muslims and non-Muslims. When you get into its libraries, you have the opportunity to read both Religious and secular books.

The Prophet said: Give the Faraid (the shares of the inheritance) to those who are entitled to receive it. Then whatever remains, should be given to the

closest male relatives of the deceased. (Bukhari)

QIn our forum on whatsapp we failed to arrive on the conclusion on why interest is prohibited. Does Islam prohibit

financing? Others are of the view that through interest financing institutions life is made easier. What direction should we take?

AInterest does not make life easier, in fact it destroys life and economic future. This does not mean that financing is prohibited.

Financing on the other hand is useful and has its appropriate venues in Islam. Financing can be provided through deferred payment sale, leasing and venture capital. Financing through interest-based lending is the only thing that is prohibited. The payment of interest creates injustice. Many nations and its people are in abject poverty and economic crisis becuase of interest based economic transactions. We also advice that whatsapp forums should consider referring issues about Islam to Ulama.

QAfter the death of a man, his two sons continued with the business. The estate was not distributed to their heirs. Several

years later, they decided to wind up the estate. All the business assets left by the father were employed in the business by the two sons. What is the status of the profit which the two sons had acquired? Do other heirs share in the profit?

AIf the two sons had employed and used the assets left by the father without the consent and approval of the other heirs, then all of

them will share proportionately in the profit. If the heirs had consented without having made any partnership agreement, then the profit belongs to only the two sons while the original assets or other valuables have to be divided among the heirs.

QMy son in law wants to send me to Hajj this year. However, I have considerable debts. Will it be better if I go for Hajj or

use the money he gives me to pay my debts?

A You should ask your son in law to use the money to pay your debts. Liberating yourself first from debt is better. The obvious reason

for going to Hajj is to gain Thawaab (reward). Paying your debts is more meritorious. You will Insha-Allah gain more Thawaab by paying your debts and Insha-Allah another opportunity for Hajj will come thereafter.

QI am struggling with my Imaan (faith), largely because I lack continuation, whereby when I start doing a good deed,

I don’t follow it. What should I do?

AIn fact, your question reflects your good heart and pure soul. What happens with you is natural and happens with many

good people. But, you are best advised to train yourself on persistence in doing good deeds. Try the following: (1) Try your level best to continue in doing good deeds, even though they are simple and limited. (2) Try to check closely your deeds so as to be able to discover points of weakness and points of strength. (3) Encircle yourself with good Muslims. (4) Be careful in observing your religious duties. (5) Make Dua (supplications) to Allah Ta’ala to help you maintain faith and do continous good deeds. As you pointed out your weakness being lack of continuation, you need to improve that area. It is very possible for you to achieve that, that is continuation in observing different forms of Ibaadat (worshipping).

QA father and his sons jointly operated the business which the father had started. They all lived from the business.

The father has died. What is the state of assets acquired in the business?

AWhen children work in their father’s business, the father remain the sole owner. All the assets constitutes his estate which

all his heirs will inherit, whether they worked in the business as the sons were doing or never took part in the running of the business. Participating in the running of the business is voluntary though important, but being a heir of the estate is natural.

Vol 19. No.4 January 2017 / Rabiul-Aakhir 1438

QIt is allowed for strange female and male to remain at work without a third person in order to complete an assignment?

AIt is not allowed for persons of different gender to be confined in a room or a place without a third person who can prevent

them from Fitnah.

QIt is the desire of every person to acquire wealth. However sometimes a person may obtain wealth from Haraam

sources with full knowledge of it. When you reach Nisaab are you obligated to pay Zakaah with such wealth?

AZakaah (Alms-giving) is not due on Haraam wealth, nor is it valid, because it does not belong to the one in whose possession it is.

One of the condition of Zakaah is that the wealth should belong to the person. Allah Ta’ala is Pure and accepts nothing but that which is pure. We should always be mindful of the source of wealth when we begin to build our possession.

QInflation is highly talked in today’s economy. Will it be permissible for a lender to demand an additional sum of

money from the borower if the original amount has decreased in value as a result of inflation?

AThe fact remain that, due to the speed of inflation, money loses its value very quickly and it becomes extremely difficult, if not

impossible, to keep up with the rate of inflation. However, in spite of that, Islam does not consider time as value of money. One can only demand the same amount that was lent. However, the borrower should try and ensure that he repays the loan as promptly as possible, in order to avoid putting the lender in the dilemma of having the value of his money becoming depleted as a result of time and inflation.

QMy brother and his friend are in the process of setting up a small business together. They are 50/50 partners in the

business. How can you assist them in setting up a business contract in conformity with the Islamic Law?

AThere are different types of legitimate partnership in Islam. If the form of partnership between the two is by each partner supplying

half the capital and splitting the profits equally then this would be a legitimate form of partnership in Islam. The following guidelines must be observed: The two share capital investment must be known

and fully disclosed. The profit that each party receives should be a certain fixed percentage contribution of each partner. If these conditions are met, then this will be a legitimate partnership contract.

QHow should a Muslim demonstrate Istiqamah (steadfastness) which is the most important concept of Islam in their

affair?

AIstiqamah (steadfastness) is one of the most impotant concepts of Islam. In every time and every place, the Muslim

would face challenges and hardships which necessitates steadfastness and adherence to his noble principles. Such steadfastness emanates from strong faith and unshakable trust in Allah Ta’ala and yields its ripe fruits in all spheres in life. Istiqamah has several meanings. It means to be straight, to follow the straight path, to remain firm on one’s principles and do not give in to difficulties or challenges. A Muslim should demonstrate Istiqamah in Dawah, faith, in family and community.

QI am getting a divorce from my husband. How should our wealth be divided according to Islam, with the

knowledge that I worked side-by-side with him to create our wealth. Am I entitled to the 50% or is it any less since he is a man and I the woman. Someone advised that in divorce the settlement goes according to the country you live. In other countries there is community of property, meaning each spouse is entitled 50% upon divorce?

AThere is no community of property between a husband and wife in Islam. Each spouse holds his or her property individually, except

that which they actually own jointly as partners, for instance items that they purchased jointly or business enterprises that they jointly developed. Allah Ta’ala says: And do not forget liberality between yourselves. For Allah sees well all that you do. (2:237) Therefore, if either party waives some of his or her rights and allows the other to have a larger share then this is perfectly alright. Therefore a 50/50 division of wealth if freely agreed upon by both, is permitted. Otherwise, each person is entitled to take the percentage of wealth that each party has actually contributed. All in all divorce is disliked by Allah Ta’ala.

QI recently embraced Islam and I would like to know why is it so important that we pray in the Arabic language. Doesn’t

that make it difficult for non-Arabic speaking to worship Allah?

AIt is really essential that we recite certain parts of our prayer in the Arabic language, but this has to do mainly with the revealed

words of Allah Ta’ala from the Qur’an. These words by themselves are inimitable and unsurpassed in their meaning and style since they are the exact words of Allah Ta’ala. So we are required to say these words in the original language since they cannot be properly translated. Besides that, your own personal supplication can be made in your own language.

QSometimes an individual may find himself having some money which he can deposit in a bank and he may

have taken a loan to finance his project. Is it permissible to use the interest paid to him on his deposits in order to pay off some of the interest charged on the loan?

AThere is no doubt that the argument for setting off interest earned against interest incurred appears to be strong and valid.

However, the person who does this, gets involved in two interest form based operations. He is actually taking interest from the bank and paying it again to the bank. In other words, he deals with interest twice. That is a case of double prohibition and sin.

QI would like to know regarding the issue that we Muslims interact with non-Muslims in the society like if we meet a

non-Muslim friend with family is it right to talk to his wife and introduce my wife to them as well?

AIslam urges Muslims to be kind with all human beings regardless of their race and creedal inclinations. The Qur’an and the Sunnah

do confirm that Muslims should honourably and generously deal with non-Muslim who deal with them kindly. With that in mind we can say that there is nothing wrong with the interaction among Muslim families and other non-Muslim ones as long as Muslims stick to the Islamic manners governing the relationship between sexes and both parties adhere to the public decorum, while respecting each other’s religion and belief.

QI am absolutely demoralised and have become a nervous wreck. This is due to that I have found out that my husband

has been dating our maid. He admitted and made repentance to Allah and asked my forgiveness. What is your advice, wrecked as I am?

AObserving Hijaab is a Divine rule which will always govern our life on earth. It could be that both your husband and you are

blameworthy for the state of affairs in which you find yourself by disregarding the law of Hijaab and intermigling with the non-Mahrams. Free mixing and abandonment of the Hijaab regulations will always result in such evil acts. Engage in Zikr and Istighfaar. Zikr wil strengthen your wrecked nerves Insha-Allah Ta’ala.

QWe often receive in our phones the message asking us to predict the outcome of football matches. In general,

are we allowed to make predictions on the forthcoming events?

A It depends on what you mean by predictions. If you mean estimation that is based on experience or the person’s own analysis of

the current events, then nothing wrong with it. For example an economic expert might give prediction about the exchange rates or a military expert may also predict victory or defeat etc. These attempts are based on experience and logical reasoning which is allowed and sometimes necessary in life, especially in planning. However, if prediction is religiously oriented and implies an extraordinary power and superstition, then it is not allowed.

QThis question comes from a Christian woman, she says she wants to get married to a Muslim man, and wonders

what is better, to take Islam or stay in her religion?

AIn fact, Islam lays emphasis on the issue of conviction. This woman is best advised to read and learn more about Islam. A

person who is thinking of converting to Islam should try to know more of Islam by means of reading reliable and well reputed Islamic books, visiting Islamic institutions if available etc. As for the issue of marriage we don’t advise that woman to convert just to get married to a Muslim man. Rather we advise her to know more about Islam and teachings so as to find her decision on conviction. Conviction is paramount in as far as ones embracing, converting, reverting to Islam.

The Prophet said: No one has ever eaten better food than that paid for with what his hands have earned. And indeed the Prophet of Allah, Dawood,

would earn his living with (the work of) his hands. (Bukhari)

QAs a means of surviving I personally deceived my friend and got away with some money from him. Now I regret

what I did and I repented to Allah Ta’ala. What should I do concerning the money I took from him?

AWhat we should know is that when we repent our past sins or mistakes are forgiven. Allah Ta’ala forgives the part that is owed to Him,

that is any shortfall in performing our duty to Him. Anything that we owe other people, He will not forgive unless the person concerned forgoes his right. Therefore, it is important that we should give back to other people what belongs to them. If we have verbally abused them and they are aware of the fact, we should tell them and beg their pardon. If we have taken their money we should refund them what we had taken. This may sound too ideal, particularly in a situation where it is very difficult for any of us to admit a guilt that the other party is unaware of. But if we are aiming for Allah’s forgiveness, this is what we should do.

QWith economic hardships, sourcing capital for businesses is becoming difficult and not straightforward. Few

months ago my friend earned money through gambling. He wants to invest the money into business. He got advice that after a certain period of time the money becomes Halaal. Is the advice correct?

A Common sense is adequate for this. How can Haraam money become Halaal? His entire income is contaminated with the filth

of the Haraam money which constitutes the basis of his business. The Haraam gambling remains Haraam. The advice he got is wrong. It is therefore compulsory that he gives the Haraam amount as Sadaqah to the poor.

Q As we live in an extremely mixed environment with non-Muslims, whenever accidents happens such

as death caused by road accident, houses

or property caught by fire, lightening killing people they attribute all these as the power of the devil causing it. As Muslims do we have to believe in that?

AIn Islam, we believe that Allah Ta’ala is the Ultimate cause of all causes in the universe. Nothing happens without His Will. However,

at the same time, He has told us that He has appointed causes which work within His overriding Will. Therefore rains fall, diseases happen according to the causes Allah has appointed. The devil is also created by Allah Ta’ala and so it could be that in some cases afflictions happens because of one or other of such causes that have been appointed. In face of such affliction however, we are ordered to seek cure and treat ourselves appropriately by using the means and resources available to us while believing firmly that Allah Ta’ala Alone is the Ultimate Protector.

QWhat advice can I give my children as they are losing their Islam by hanging out with non-Muslim friends all day

long?

A Parents bear the responsibility to bring up their children according to the teachings of Islam. Perhaps the only realistic way to wean

your children out to bad company is by providing them with practical alternatives. It is said that the alternative to bad company is good company. Enroll your children in activities that are beneficial and where they will be able to interact with other children in a constructive and positive way. If such activities do not exist in your community, you should get together with other parents who have similar concerns and organize something.

QI have heard about Salaatul-Hajah.What this prayer all about?

ASalaatul-Hajah is a prayer offered for the accomplishment of a particular purpose. It is a two Rakah prayer,

that states what one wishes to be accomplished with Allah’s help.

Emerged Before ChristianityEmerged in Malawi before Christianity, Islam co-exist swith other faith groups. Though Islam is older in the history of Malawi, which precedes Christianity, Muslims are proud of not been arrogant over other faith groups. Instead, Muslims uphold the importance of patriotism to their country.First Gift of Spiritual MessageHistorically, Islam was the first gift of spiritual message, which came to Malawi. In the pursuit of being loyal to their country, Muslims in Malawi, participate in various developmental programs, spearheaded by government, non-governmental organizations and own initiatives.Partners in DevelopmentAs partners in development Muslim organizations and individuals, have assisted in enhancing the education sector, by establishing primary and secondary schools and colleges such as Maryam Teachers Training College, International College for Business Management, Mai Aisha Academy etc where both Muslims and non-Muslims pursue their education. A Mile in Health SectorSince development, cannot be spearheaded by people with poor health, Islamic organizations are also investing in the health sector, by establishing health centers and clinics in the urban and rural areas. Ambassadors to such initiatives in the health sector include, Madinah Social Services, Limbe Muslim Jammat, and Lilongwe Sunni Foundation, have a number of health centers and clinics in urban and rural areas. The health services are subsidized, such that patients both Muslims and non-Muslims pay minimal fees. Access To Interest-Free Loans Not only that, developments cannot excel without financial institutions to provide financial support, such as providing loans for businesses and development projects. Realizing the great need of Malawians both

Muslims and non-Muslims to access interest-free loans, Muslims all along have made attempts in dialoguing with the Reserve Bank of Malawi, for the possibility of allowing Islamic Financial Products within Malawi’s existing Commercial Banks.Islamic Banking and Islamic Financing provides services open to all, both Muslim and non-Muslim. In other words, Islamic Banking and Financing services are not aimed at forcing non-Muslims to embrace Islam. The guiding principle of Islam to non-Muslims is a verse in the Qur’an, which stipulates saying, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256)Pew Research Center on IslamAccording to Pew Reaserch Center, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and is expected to outstrip Christianity by the end of the centuary. The numbers of Muslims will grow more than twice as fast as the world’s population by 2050.As Muslims in Malawi, we need to grow and match our strength. Many of us have heard the phrase, “If you are not growing, you are falling behind.” Since organizations have three core systems, to do, sell and grow, as Muslims we need to act, perform and forge ahead.Publication’s ViewWith such few items, as a reviewed perspective of Islam in Malawi, first spiritual gift, we may say that, the perspective of Islam in Malawi is a window full of compassion, generosity, cooperation, tolerance, as it deals with Malawi’s multi-society.Suggested Perspective Stepping first in Malawi is a blessing of its kind. As such, Muslims were supposed be ahead of everything, in education, in Waqf (Endowments), propagation, infranstructure etc. The most relevant question could be are we growing, progressing proportionately to match the claim that Islam was the first spiritual gift that appeared in Malawi?
