Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles
• Silver nanoparticles can be synthesized by several methods.
• They can be divided into three broad categories:
3
Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles[2]
1. Physical synthesis
2. Chemical synthesis
• Using plant extract[2]
• Using antibiotics[2]
• Using microorganisms[2]
3.Biogenic synthesis
• The biological synthesis of nanoparticles has provided a means for improved
techniques compared to the traditional methods that call for the use of harmful
reducing agents.
• Chemical and Physical methods for the synthesis are very costly, toxic and affects
the medical applications.
• Biogenic methods of silver nanoparticles synthesis are ecofriendly and produce
nanoparticle with precise shape and size.[2]

Main topic
Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles
Using Plant Extract
• Biosynthesis of nanoparticles is considered a green technology, as it does not involve
any harmful chemicals.
• Several microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts have come up as Nano-
factories, synthesizing metal nanoparticles of Ag and Au.
• However, the use of plants for the fabrication of nanoparticles has drawn attention,
because of its rapid, economical, eco-friendly protocol, and it provides a single step
technique for the biosynthesis process.
6
Notes
• The synthesis of silver nanoparticles depend on phenolic content of different plant sources.
Ag+ reduction Ag0
• Different parameters like temperature, time, pH, etc. influence the size and shape of silver
nanoparticles.
• Antimicrobial activity of AgNPs can be studied using Well diffusion assay.
• Applications :
1. Effluent treatment process (for reducing the microbial load)[7]
2. Wound dressing
7
Methodology
1. Preparation of plant extract
2. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles
8
Ag+ ions were reduced by addition of plant extract to aqueous AgNO3 solution.
Reduction of the Ag+ ions was monitored by measuring the ultraviolet-visible spectrum of the solution at regular intervals on a spectrophotometer operating at a resolution of 1
nm.
The effects of temperature on the rate of synthesis and size of the prepared silver nanoparticles were studied by carrying out the reaction in a water bath at particular
temperature with reflux.
The concentration of AgNO3 solution was also varied
