Shrines & Sacred SpacesFounded in 1840 by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her five sister companions, Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods is a place where you’ll find many sacred spaces that are also historically significant. Here are a few you need to see first. We invite you to visit soon. All are welcome.

Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore GuerinDeclared a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in 2006, Mother Theodore is the first Indiana saint and the 8th in the United States. Her shrine is open daily for prayer and reflection. In the shrine, you will experience her journey, learn how her legacy lives on today and be challenged to bear witness to the blessings of Providence in your own life.

National Shrine of Our Lady of ProvidenceOur Lady of Providence, also known as Mary, the mother of Jesus, experienced the joys and the struggles of real family life. In May 1925, the Sisters of Providence established the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence to promote the humanness of Mary and the Holy Family. We pray each day for the many intentions sent to the shrine, asking for the protection and intercession of Our Lady of Providence as Queen of the Home. The shrine is located in the vestibule of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Church of the Immaculate ConceptionWhen you visit the Church of the Immaculate

Conception you’ll and see paintings, bas-reliefs, stained glass windows, murals and marble works. The laying of the cornerstone of the Church of the Immaculate Conception took place in 1886. D.A. Bohlen and Son of Indianapolis, architects, completed the Indiana limestone building in 1891, but it took 16 more years before the interior was finally complete. We invite you to make it part of your travel plans to worship in this magnificent church. This building is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Blessed Sacrament ChapelThis exquisite chapel, now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, will take your breath away the first time you step inside. Built in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the chapel has a canopy over the altar that was carved entirely from one block of flawless white Italian Carrara marble from base to cross and weighs 8,000 pounds. You may find inner peace and comfort in this small chapel.

Saint Anne Shell ChapelJust outside the gates of the Sisters of Providence cemetery stands Saint Anne Shell Chapel, built in 1875. This small stone structure replaced the original log chapel built by Mother Theodore in thanksgiving to Saint Anne for safety during their harrowing journey back from France in 1843. The story of trust in Providence is captured on some of the shells that line the walls of the chapel. This structure is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Log Cabin ChapelWhen you enter this replica of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods’s first Log Cabin Chapel, you’ll get a good idea of what Mother Theodore found when she arrived. Located at what is to be believed the original site, the Log Cabin Chapel stands in the shadow of today’s Church of the Immaculate Conception. Space is available inside and outside for sitting, quiet time, personal reflection and prayer.

Cosmic WalkAn outdoor Cosmic Walk, offered by White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, is located on the north side of the grounds, near Saint Joseph Lake on the Nature Trail. Here you will awaken a deeper consciousness of the amazing beauty and age of the Universe and its unfolding life process.
