Can you take the GRE instead?

• Many students consider the GMAT to be harder: no calculator, data sufficiency, no skipping around.

• A growing number of business schools accept the GRE—do the schools to which you are applying?

• The GRE does test vocabulary, which can be tricky for students who are not verbally inclined.

Do you need specific sub-scores?

Do you need specific sub-scores?

• If you need to reach a certain percentile on the quantitative or verbal section, then you’re going to have to improve specific areas to reach your goals.

• If all that matters is the scaled score, then you should make sure to maximize your score on your stronger subjects and not just improve weaker ones.

Pick the low-hanging fruit

• Standardized tests like the GMAT tend to focus on some concepts more than others. Improving proficiency in these areas is the best way to maximize your score.

• On the quantitative section concepts involving division, such as fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and averages are tested frequently.

• On the verbal section, remember that sentence corrections are actually the most common questions. Improve your grammar knowledge and pay particular attention to agreement issues like subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement and noun agreement.

Improve your Test Taking Skills

• Unforced errors are score-killers because of the Computer Adaptive Function of the test. Attention to detail is one of the most important skills you can have on GMAT.

• Remember that the GMAT is really a reasoning test, so try not to get lost in calculation. Instead, consider the problem logically first and make sure your work and your answers gibe with your understanding.

• There are many classic traps that you can learn to spot. For example, consider an average problem like this one: Fred bikes along a trail at 30 miles per hour and then turns around and bikes home at 20 miles per hour. What was his average speed for the entire trip? A) 20 B) 21 C) 24 D) 25 E) 30

Check your ego

Check your ego

• One of the most common mistakes that GMAT test-takers make is spending too much time on individual questions. The Computer Adaptive Function exacerbates this problem by not allowing you to return to a problem.

• Don’t feel like you have to solve every problem algebraically or even completely understand to get it right. Consider alternative solving methods like putting in your own numbers and testing the answers.

• Recognize when you’re not getting any closer to an answer and pick something, move on and forget about it—because you’ll never see that question again!

• At the same time, don’t make a random guess. Eliminate absurd choices and try to estimate as much as you can to give yourself a chance at a right answer.

Don’t be afraid to seek help

Don’t be afraid to seek help

• If you don’t change your approach to the GMAT, don’t expect a different result.

• Group classes are effective for some students but they are aimed at the average student and don’t necessarily address your specific concerns.

• Private tutoring is more expensive but also more efficient, particularly when you work with an experienced tutor who gets to know you and your needs.

• A study group with friends can help keep you on pace with your preparation, regardless of how you decide to approach your retake.

• Use practice tests as a way to monitor your progress, try out new approaches and develop a feel for the timing and general feel of the test.
