Carta delpatronato

La Fundación We Are Water nació en el año 2010 con dos

objetivos claros: la difusión de una nueva cultura del agua, en

su sentido más extenso; y el desarrollo de acciones para paliar

los efectos de la falta de recursos hídricos y mejorar el acceso

a saneamiento básico. Estos dos principios han guiado su labor

durante estos siete años de actividad, en los que ha mantenido

una trayectoria de crecimiento y expansión constante a

distintos niveles.

La presente memoria documenta la actividad realizada entre

2016 y 2017, pero es también una clara muestra de este

progreso. Permitan que lo resuma en los siguientes puntos:

Primero. Protagonistas de una nueva etapa de concienciación global. Pese a estar presente en la agenda

medioambiental desde hace varias décadas, no ha sido hasta

los últimos 15 años cuando se ha abordado con verdadera

ambición la falta de recursos hídricos y de un saneamiento

básico adecuado en millones de personas. Los Objetivos de

Desarrollo Sostenible (2015-2030) sitúan esta cuestión como

una prioridad ineludible y con unas metas bien definidas, lo

que contribuye a su difusión y a la toma de conciencia por

parte de todos.

Nacida en pleno contexto de crisis económica, la Fundación

ha contribuido a esta creciente concienciación mediante una

voz y estilo propios: la propuesta de acciones atractivas a nivel

comunicativo, buscando siempre el mayor impacto pero con

una base de conocimiento y contenidos muy sólida. Ejemplo

de ello son iniciativas plenamente consolidadas como el We

Art Water Film Festival, que ya celebra la cuarta edición y

recibe participantes de cerca de 90 países; las campañas en

ocasión del Día Mundial del agua o el Día Mundial del Retrete;

el ciclo “Smartwater”, con conferencias en diversos países; los

premios especiales a la sostenibilidad que otorga en concursos

internacionales de diseño para fomentar el ahorro del agua, o

la organización de exposiciones, entre muchas otras.

Segundo. Desarrollo de conocimiento especializado. En un plazo muy corto, la Fundación ha alcanzado relevancia y respeto para ser considerada un agente de primer orden a la hora de generar conocimiento y promover el debate sobre nuevos retos relacionados con la gestión de los recursos hídricos y el saneamiento. En los últimos años, la campaña #NoWalkingForWater se ha centrado en una consecuencia muy específica de la dificultad de acceso al agua en determinadas comunidades: millones de niñas y mujeres en todo el mundo dedican hasta seis horas al día a recoger agua para sus familias, lo que dificulta su entrada en el sistema educativo y el mundo laboral. Esta campaña se lanzó inicialmente en ocasión del Día Mundial del Agua 2016, pero la repercusión alcanzada ha permitido su continuidad en 2017 y su desarrollo transversal en otras actividades de la Fundación.

Cabría también destacar la presencia en los principales foros de debate internacionales, el impulso de nuevos encuentros y jornadas, o la elaboración de un manual propio de construcción de pozos y letrinas. En estas acciones, la Fundación ha colaborado con asociaciones y entidades del prestigio de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (WMO) o la International Association of Broadcast Meteorology (IABM), además de diversas organizaciones no gubernamentales. Gracias a todas ellas por su confianza y compromiso.

Tercero. Consolidación de la dimensión internacional. Este principio fundacional también se ha conseguido en un plazo meritorio, como se observa tanto en el desarrollo de las iniciativas y campañas propias, que alcanzan visibilidad y repercusión global de la mano de las nuevas plataformas de comunicación, como en la presencia del equipo de la Fundación en las actividades que apoya y promueve, tanto en el ámbito de la concienciación como de la cooperación.

En este doble objetivo destaca la inauguración de la nueva filial de la Fundación en India, uno de los países del mundo más afectados por la escasez de agua potable y con mayores deficiencias en los sistemas de saneamiento. La presencia de un equipo permanente contribuirá a un seguimiento todavía más cercano de los proyectos de cooperación en los que participa y también un contacto más directo con las administraciones y entidades locales con las que colabora.

Cuatro. Incremento de los proyectos de cooperación. Los dos últimos años han resultado especialmente intensos en la participación en proyectos de cooperación, alcanzando ya una cifra total de 49 proyectos en 21 países, que han beneficiado directamente a más de 540.000 personas. En este ámbito destaca la nueva colaboración con la Fundación Mujeres por África mediante un proyecto en Ghana, que se añade al trabajo con organizaciones como Unicef, Oxfam Intermón, Fundación Vicente Ferrer, World Vision, Fundación Pies Descalzos o Educo.

Todas estas acciones, desarrolladas con detalle en las siguientes páginas, no serían posibles sin la complicidad y compromiso de todas las personas y entidades que nos acompañan en este proyecto, impulsado y respaldado por Roca. Sin embargo, el repaso del trabajo realizado vuelve a mostrarnos la dimensión del reto que tenemos por delante y la necesidad de mantener una colaboración constante entre todos los implicados.

La Fundación We Are Water seguirá trabajando para reunir nuevos apoyos y seguir contribuyendo con todavía más efectividad y esfuerzo, si cabe, a alcanzarlos.

Letter from the Board of Trustees

The We Are Water Foundation was set up in 2010 with two solid goals: the dissemination of the new water culture, in its broader sense; and the development of actions to mitigate the effects of the lack of water resources and to improve the access to basic sanitation. These two principles have guided its work during these seven years, in which it has maintained a path of constant growth and expansion at different levels.

This report documents the activity carried out in 2016 and 2017, but it is also a clear expression of this progress. Let me summarise this in the following points:

First. Players of a new period of global awareness. Despite being included in the environmental agenda for several decades, the lack of water resources and adequate basic sanitation for millions of people has not been ambitiously addressed until the last 15 years. The Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030) position this issue as an unavoidable priority with well-defined goals, contributing to its dissemination and raising the awareness of all of us.

Established amidst an economic crisis, the Foundation has contributed to this growing awareness with its own voice and personality: the proposal of attractive actions from the point of view of communication, always searching for the greatest impact but with a very solid base of knowledge and contents. An example of this would be fully consolidated initiatives such as the We Art Water Film Festival, which celebrates its fourth edition, with participants from nearly 90 countries; the campaigns to commemorate World Water Day or World Toilet Day; the “Smartwater” series, with talks in different countries; the special awards to sustainability presented by the Foundation in international design competitions to promote the saving of water or the organization of exhibitions, among many others.

Second. Development of specialized contents. In a very short period of time, the Foundation has reached enough relevance and respect to be considered a leading actor when it comes to generating knowledge and promoting the debate on new challenges related to the management of water resources and sanitation. In the last few years, the campaign #NoWalkingForWater has focused on a very specific consequence of the difficult access to water in certain communities: millions of girls and women all around the world spend up to six hours collecting water for their families every day, making it difficult for them to enter the educational system or the job market. This campaign was initially launched to commemorate World Water Day 2016, but the attained impact has enabled its continuation in 2017 and its cross-cutting development in other activities of the Foundation.

I would also like to highlight the presence in the main international debate forums, the development of new meetings and conferences, or the drafting of its own manual for the construction of wells and latrines. In these actions, the Foundation has collaborated with such prestigious associations and institutions as the United Nations (UN), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) or the International Association of Broadcast Meteorology (IABM), as well as other non-governmental associations. I would like to thank of all them for their trust and commitment.

Third. Consolidation of the international dimension. This founding principal has also been attained in a commendable period of time, as can be seen in the development of its own initiatives and campaigns, which reach global visibility and impact thanks to the new communication platforms and in the presence of the team of the Foundation in the activities it supports and promotes, both in the field of awareness and cooperation.

The opening of a new subsidiary of the Foundation in India, one of the countries in the world worst hit by the lack of drinking water and with greater deficiencies in the sanitation systems, stands out in this dual objective. The presence of a permanent team will contribute to a closer follow-up of the cooperation projects it participates in and also a more direct contact with the local administrations and institutions it collaborates with.

Fourth. Increase in the number of cooperation projects. The last two years have been especially intense in the participation in cooperation projects, already reaching a total of 49 projects in 21 countries, which have directly benefited over 540,000 people. The new collaboration with the Women for Africa Foundation, with a project in Ghana, can be highlighted. This is added to the work with organizations such as Unicef, Oxfam Intermón, RDT, World Vision, Fundación Pies Descalzos or Educo.

All these actions, explained in detail in the following pages, would not be possible without the involvement and commitment of all people and institutions that make this project possible, driven and supported by Roca. However, the review of all the work carried out shows us once again the dimension of the challenge we are facing and the need to keep a constant cooperation with all involved parties.

The We Are Water Foundation will continue working to gain more support and to contribute with even more effectiveness and effort, if possible, to the attainment if its goals.

Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (2015-2030)

La revisión y actualización de los ocho Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) se materializó en la aprobación de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible en septiembre de 2015. Este acuerdo ha establecido 17 nuevos objetivos que tienen como meta el fin de la pobreza y la lucha contra la desigualdad, la injusticia y el cambio climático, entre otros.

En esta ocasión, el acceso al agua y el saneamiento constituyen un objetivo propio –concretamente, el número 6–, bajo el título de “Agua limpia y saneamiento” y el objetivo general de “garantizar la disponibilidad de agua y su gestión sostenible y el saneamiento para todos”. Además, se han definido ocho metas específicas para 2030, encabezadas por las siguientes:

• Lograr el acceso universal y equitativo al agua potable, a un precio asequible para todos.

• Lograr el acceso equitativo a servicios de saneamiento e higiene adecuados para todos y poner fin a la defecación al aire libre, prestando especial atención a las necesidades de las mujeres y las niñas y las personas en situaciones vulnerables.

The new Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030)

The revision and update of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) resulted in the adoption of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development in September 2015. This agreement has established 17 new goals with the purpose of ending poverty and fighting inequality, injustice and climate change, among others.

On this occasion, the access to water and sanitation is a specific goal –precisely, number 6–, under the heading “Clean water and sanitation” and the main goal “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all”. Eight specific goals for 2030 have also been defined, headed by the following:

• Achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

• Achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations

Un reto compartido

Los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio ponen el foco sobre las desigualdades existentes en el acceso al agua y servicios adecuados de saneamiento, con especial foco en las comunidades y colectivos más vulnerables. Para hacer frente a este reto señalan la necesidad de una implicación global, que abarca desde el uso racional del agua y la energía en los hábitos cotidianos –centrado principalmente en los países desarrollados– a la labor decisiva de administraciones públicas, asociaciones internacionales y empresas privadas, que deben invertir para revertir la situación.

El reto global viene marcado principalmente por las previsiones de incremento de la población mundial, que en 2050 puede situarse en 9.700 millones de personas frente a los 7.500 millones actuales. Según la OCDE, cerca del 40% de la población vivirá en áreas de estrés hídrico severo en 2050.

El reto individual pasa por integrar en los hábitos cotidianos pequeñas acciones que pueden contribuir a prevenir el desperdicio de agua: cerrar el grifo y la ducha cuando no necesitemos agua, no utilizar los inodoros como cubos de basura o utilizar envases reutilizables.

A shared challenge

The Millennium Development Goals focus on the existing inequalities in the access to water and adequate sanitation services, especially focusing on the most vulnerable communities and collectives. In order to face this challenge, a global implication is necessary, ranging from the rational use of water and energy in our daily habits -mainly focused on developed countries- to the key role played by the public administrations, international associations and private companies, which need to invest to revert this situation.

The global challenge is greatly influenced by the forecast of the increase of the world population, which might reach 9.7 billion people in 2050 opposite to the current 7.5 billion. According to the OECD, nearly 40% of the population will live in areas with severe hydric stress by 2050.

The individual challenge requires the integration in our daily habits of small actions that can contribute to avoid the waste of water: to close the tap and the shower when we do not need any water, to avoid using the WC as if it were a rubbish bin or to use reusable containers.

Acceso al agua

Pese a que el acceso al agua potable está reconocido en la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos, numerosas comunidades carecen de las infraestructuras necesarias para disfrutar de este recurso natural imprescindible para cubrir necesidades básicas de hidratación, saneamiento o preparación de alimentos. La implementación de infraestructuras que aseguran un acceso adecuado a agua potable es un objetivo transversal en prácticamente todos los proyectos que impulsamos desde la Fundación.

Access to water

Although the access to drinking water is included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, numerous communities lack the necessary infrastructures to benefit from this natural resource, essential to cover basic needs, such as hydration, sanitation or food preparation. The implementation of infrastructures that ensure a suitable access to drinking water is a common objective in practically all projects driven by the Foundation.

Salud

Enfermedades como la diarrea –segunda causa de muerte de menores de cinco años en el mundo–, el paludismo, la hepatitis A o la esquistosomiasis están estrechamente relacionadas con el acceso al agua potable, la mejora de la gestión de los recursos hídricos y un saneamiento básico. La Fundación ha colaborado en proyectos específicos de mejora de la salud, especialmente en comunidades afectadas por catástrofes naturales.

Health

Diseases such as diarrhoea –the second leading cause of death worldwide in children under five-, malaria, hepatitis A or schistosomiasis are closely linked to the access to drinking water, the improvement in the management of water resources and a basic sanitation. The Foundation has collaborated in specific health improvement projects, especially in communities affected by natural disasters.

Seguridad alimentaria

De acuerdo con la FAO, la seguridad alimentaria se da cuando todas las personas tienen acceso permanente a alimentos seguros, nutritivos y en cantidad suficiente para satisfacer sus requerimientos nutricionales y preferencias alimentarias. La gestión adecuada de los recursos hídricos resulta fundamental para el funcionamiento del sector agrícola –mayor consumidor de agua del mundo– y para garantizar la calidad de los procesos productivos. Nuestros proyectos en este campo desarrollan principalmente infraestructuras para sistemas de regadío adecuados a las características de cada región.

Food safety

According to FAO, food safety occurs when all individuals have permanent access to safe and nutritious food in sufficient quantities to meet their nutritional requirements and food preferences. The fair management of water resources is essential for the functioning of the agricultural sector –the world's greatest consumer of water- and to guarantee the quality of the production processes. Our projects in this field mainly develop infrastructures for irrigation systems in accordance with the needs of each region.

Saneamiento mejorado

La OMS define el “saneamiento mejorado” como el sistema que higiénicamente impide el contacto de las personas con excrementos humanos, lo que implica la existencia de infraestructuras que aseguren la separación de los desechos en todo el proceso, desde los inodoros o letrinas al vertido de residuos en un sistema de alcantarillado o fosa séptica. Los proyectos de saneamiento desarrollados desde la Fundación se centran principalmente en la mejora de estos sistemas en centros escolares y en comunidades afectadas por catástrofes naturales.

Improved sanitation

The WHO defines “improved sanitation” as a system that hygienically prevents human contact with excreta, which implies the existence of infrastructures that ensure waste separation throughout the whole process, from toilets or latrines to the waste discharge into a sewage system or septic tank. The sanitation projects developed by the Foundation mainly focus on the improvement of these systems in schools and communities affected by natural disasters.

Educación: cultura e higiene

El desarrollo de actividades de formación y concienciación es también un aspecto transversal en la mayoría de proyectos en los que cooperamos, con el objetivo de asegurar que las comunidades beneficiadas aprendan cómo utilizar y mantener adecuadamente las infraestructuras construidas. En la mayoría de ocasiones también se realizan acciones de difusión de buenos hábitos de higiene para colectivos específicos, como pueden ser los niños o las mujeres.

Education: culture and hygiene

The development of educational and awareness-raising activities has been a cross-cutting issue in most of the projects we cooperate with, with the aim of ensuring that the benefiting communities learn how to use and properly maintain the built infrastructures. Actions to promote good hygiene habits among specific population groups, such as children or women, are also carried out in most cases.

Desde su creación en 2010, la Fundación We Are Water ha participado en un total de 49 proyectos destinados a paliar problemas relacionados con la falta de agua potable, el acceso a un saneamiento básico, la seguridad alimentaria o la concienciación en relación al uso del agua.

Since its establishment in 2010, the We Are Water Foundation has participated in 49 projects to address problems related to the lack of drinking water, the access to basic sanitation, food safety or the awareness of the use of water.

We Art Water Film Festival

Concurso internacional de cortometrajes que tiene la voluntad de ahondar en la problemática del agua de una forma diferente. El festival reconoce y premia el talento de aquellas personas con clara sensibilidad hacia el problema del agua en el mundo, a través de la creación de piezas audiovisuales que abordan el tema de un modo creativo y único. De esta forma se unen dos elementos: la sensibilidad hacia la causa del agua y el valor del cine como arte y herramienta de difusión y concienciación.

We Art Water Film Festival

International short film festival with the aim to delve into the water problem from a different perspective. The festival recognizes the talent of all those with a clear awareness of the water problem around the world, through the creation of audiovisual pieces that deal with this issue in a creative and unique way. Two elements are therefore combined: the awareness of the water issue and the value of cinema as an art and a tool to disseminate and raise understanding.

Con motivo de esta fecha celebramos numerosas acciones propias en todo el mundo: desde actividades de concienciación sobre la realidad actual del consumo de agua y acceso a recursos hídricos en el mundo a mesas redondas y conferencias.

World Water Day

In 1993, the United Nations declared the 22nd March as the World Water Day with the aim of raising awareness of the problems suffered by a large proportion of the world's population with regard to water and the importance of a fair development of the water resources. To coincide with this special day we celebrated numerous actions around the world: from activities to raise awareness of the current reality of water consumption and the access to water resources around the world to round tables and conferences.

Día Mundial del Retrete

Con objetivo de concienciar sobre la falta de acceso a un saneamiento adecuado que sufren millones de personas, en 2013 Naciones Unidas declaró el 19 de noviembre como Día Mundial del Retrete. Desde la Fundación nos unimos a esta jornada con la organización de encuentros en varios países para debatir sobre el reto que implica abastecer de un saneamiento básico a toda la población mundial.

World Toilet Day

With the aim of raising awareness of the lack of access to suitable sanitation suffered by millions of people, in 2013 the United Nations declared the 19th November as the World Toilet Day. We join this special day with the organisation of meetings in different countries to discuss the challenge implied by the provision of basic sanitation to the whole world's population.

Other activities

Other awareness-raising activities are organized throughout the year. The following stand out in the years 2016 and 2017: the exhibition “My Toilet”, curated by Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP); an educational project in collaboration with the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia); the development of a construction manual of latrines and wells; or the opening of the subsidiary of the Foundation in India. La tercera edición del festival finalizó en junio de 2016 con la entrega de premios y en septiembre de 2017 arrancó la cuarta convocatoria, presentada junto con el cortometraje El hombre de agua dulce.

After three successful editions, the short film festival We Art Water Film Festival has consolidated as a renowned competition that rewards all those talented people aware of the water problem. The third edition of the festival ended in June 2016 with the award ceremony and the fourth edition started in September 2017, presented along with the short film The fresh water man.

Entrega de premios de la tercera edición El We Art Water Film Festival 3 concluyó en junio de 2016 con la entrega de premios realizada en Roca Madrid Gallery. La gala reunió a algunos de los miembros del jurado: Albert Solé, director de documentales; Rocío García, periodista especializada en cine del diario El País; Carlos Jiménez Renjifo, director del centro Regional de Información de las Naciones Unidas (UNRIC); y los directores de cine Juan José Campanella o Judith Colell, comisaria de la tercera edición del festival (1, 2, 3). Durante el evento se dieron a conocer los ganadores de cada categoría:

• Micro-documental: Evgeny Makharadze (Rusia), por Pevek (4).

• Micro-ficción: Bertrand Ndukong (Camerún), por Maximize (6).

• Micro-animación: Azadeh Deghani (Irán), por Childish blue (5).

• Premio del público: Hasan Jubair (Bangladesh), por Happy World (7).

Con el apoyo de Naciones Unidas, el certamen contó con 1.473 inscritos de un total de 88 países, entre los que destacan Colombia, Reino Unido, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Perú, España o México.

Presentación de la cuarta edición

La cuarta edición dio su pistoletazo de salida en septiembre de 2017 en el marco del 65º Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, donde se proyectó en primicia el cortometraje El hombre de agua dulce. Dirigido por Álvaro Ron y producido por Rosana Tomás en colaboración con la Fundación We Are Water, este corto da visibilidad a la problemática de la sequía y la importancia de un buen aprovechamiento del agua.

El jurado de esta edición está formado por reconocidos profesionales del mundo del cine, como los actores Leonor Watling, Úrsula Corberó, Pablo Rivero o Irene Escolar; Conchita Casanovas, crítica de cine de Radio Nacional de España; Rosana Tomás, productora; o Yvonne Blake, presidenta de la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España; junto con Sergio y Javier Torres, chefs con dos estrellas Michelin. Además, repiten en el jurado Carlos Jiménez Renfijo, director de UNRIC; Xavier Torras, director de la Fundación We Are Water; y la directora Judith Colell, comisaria del certamen.

Award ceremony of the third edition

The We Art Water Film Festival 3 ended in June 2016 with the award ceremony that took place at the Roca Madrid Gallery. The event gathered some of the members of the jury: Albert Solé, documentary filmmaker; Rocío García, journalist specializing in cinema at the newspaper El País; Carlos Jiménez Renjifo, director of the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNIRIC); and the filmmakers Juan José Campanella or Judith Colell, curator of the third edition of the festival (1, 2, 3). The winners were announced during the event:

Presentation of the fourth edition The fourth edition of the Festival started in September 2017 within the framework of the 65th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The short film The fresh water man, from the filmmaker Álvaro Ron and the producer Rosana Tomás, in collaboration with the We Are Water Foundation. This short film aims to provide visibility to the drought problem and to the importance of a good water use.

Día Mundial del AguaWorld Water DayEn pleno siglo XXI, el agua continúa siendo un problema para 663 millones de personas en todo el mundo. Para contribuir a sensibilizar a la población mundial sobre este problema, la Fundación We Are Water impulsa cada 22 de marzo diversas acciones con motivo del Día Mundial del Agua. La edición de 2016 supuso el inicio de la campaña #NoWalking4Water, de gran repercusión en todo el mundo, mientras que la jornada de 2017 se centró en la reutilización de las aguas residuales.

In the 21st century water continues being a problem for 663 million people around the world. In order to raise global awareness of this problem, the We Are Water Foundation drives different actions every 22nd March to commemorate World Water Day. The 2016 edition triggered the start of the campaign #NoWalking4Water, with a significant impact all around the world, while the 2017 day was devoted to the reuse of waste water.



Campaña #NoWalking4WaterLa dificultad de acceso al agua tiene una repercusión directa en el progreso socioeconómico y cultural de comunidades y colectivos en todo el mundo. Con objeto de poner el foco en estas consecuencias, la Fundación impulsó en el Día Mundial del Agua 2016 la campaña #NoWalking4Water, que expuso el problema de los millones de niñas y mujeres que deben andar diariamente hasta seis horas para recoger agua para sus familias. Esta obligación dificulta su acceso al sistema educativo y, como consecuencia, ven también limitadas sus opciones de entrar en el mundo laboral. #NoWalking4Water hizo visible el problema a través de la imagen de un bidón de 20 litros, que simboliza el bidón que usan millones de niñas y mujeres que van a recolectar agua durante horas.

La campaña invitó a personas de todo el mundo a entrar en www.nowalking4water.org, descargar la imagen del bidón y hacerse una foto con él para compartirlo en las redes sociales bajo el 'hashtag' #NoWalking4Water. El 22 de marzo de 2016 también se instaló en diversas ciudades del mundo un mural con la imagen de la campaña y bidones llenos de agua que permitían experimentar en primera persona la actividad diaria de las mujeres y niñas.

La iniciativa tuvo continuidad en el Día Mundial del Agua 2017, alcanzando repercusión mundial, con presencia en países como España, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, India, Portugal, Estados Unidos o China, entre otros. Junto con la participación de centenares de personas anónimas, contribuyó a la difusión de la iniciativa la participación de reconocidos personajes públicos, como deportistas, actores o periodistas. Entre ellos, el exjugador del FC Barcelona Carles Puyol; el presidente del FC Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu; el cantante Joan Manuel Serrat; la piloto Laia Sanz; el actor Javier Bardem; o los chefs Sergio y Javier Torres (1-6).

'Master class' en Barcelona y Lisboa: "Water and Jobs. The power to transform our lives"Junto con la campaña #NoWalking4Water, la Fundación organizó en 2016 la master class "Water and Jobs. The power to transform our lives", celebrada en Roca Barcelona Gallery y Roca Lisboa Gallery. Los participantes en el encuentro de Barcelona –mayoritariamente, estudiantes universitarios–, conversaron sobre la relación que existe entre el agua y el mundo laboral con expertos en ingeniería, comunicación, química o derecho. La actividad en Lisboa se organizó en colaboración con la Asociación ZERO y debatió alrededor de sistemas de tratamiento de agua (7).

#NoWalking4Water campaignThe difficult access to water has a direct impact on the socioeconomic and cultural progress of communities and collectives around the world. With the aim of focusing on these consequences, the Foundation launched the #NoWalking4Water campaign on World Water Day 2016, which set out the problem of millions of women and girls who need to walk up to six hours every day to collect water for their families. This obligation hinders their access to the educational system and, as a consequence, limits their options of entering the labour market. #NoWalking4Water made this problem visible through a 20-litre water drum, which symbolizes the canister used by millions of women and girls that walk for hours to collect water.

The campaign invited people from all around the world to click on www.nowalking4water.org, download the image of the drum and take a picture with it to share it on social media with the 'hashtag' #NoWalking4Water. A mural with the image of the campaign was also installed in different cities around the world on the 22nd March 2016, along with drums full of water that allowed visitors to experience first-hand the daily activity of these women and girls.

This initiative continued on World Water Day 2017, having a worldwide impact, with presence in countries such as Spain, United Arab Emirates, India, Portugal, United States or China, among others. Along with the participation of hundreds of ordinary citizens, the dissemination of this initiative was greatly increased thanks to the participation of renowned personalities, such as athletes, actors or journalists. Among them, the former FC Barcelona player, Carles Puyol; the president of FC Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu; the singer Joan Manuel Serrat; the rider Laia Sanz; the actor Javier Bardem; or the chefs Sergio and Javier Torres (1-6).

Master class in Barcelona and Lisbon: "Water and Jobs. The power to transform our lives"Along with the campaign #NoWalking4Water, the Foundation organised the master class "Water and Jobs. The power to transform our lives", held at the Roca Barcelona Gallery and Roca Lisboa Gallery in 2016. The participants in the Barcelona meeting –mainly university students–, discussed the relationship existing between water and the labour market with experts in engineering, communication, chemistry or law. The activity in Lisbon was organised in collaboration with the ZERO association and the water treatment systems were discussed (7).

Mesa redonda en Barcelona: “Reutilización del agua. ¿Estamos preparados?”La temática propuesta por Naciones Unidas para el Día Mundial del Agua 2017 fue la reutilización de las aguas residuales. Bajo esta premisa, la Fundación organizó en Roca Barcelona Gallery la mesa redonda "Reutilización del agua. ¿Estamos preparados?", en la que expertos del mundo del agua, el medio ambiente y la comunicación debatieron sobre las oportunidades y retos de las aguas residuales.

Debates en Lisboa y Shanghái: "¿Por qué desperdiciamos agua?"En 2017, la Fundación también organizó debates en Roca Lisboa Gallery y Roca Shanghai Gallery bajo el título de "¿Por qué desperdiciamos agua? Diagnóstico y soluciones". La actividad en Lisboa reunió a representantes de las principales instituciones medioambientales locales, profesores universitarios e investigadores. El encuentro de Shanghai contó con la participación de representantes de asociaciones locales e investigadores.

Divulgación de conocimiento y repercusión mediática Junto con el lanzamiento de campañas específicas y la organización de conferencias y jornadas, la Fundación aprovecha el interés mediático que despierta el Día Mundial de Agua para divulgar de forma masiva datos e información relativos a esta cuestión. Para ello, cada año diseña infografías y carteles relacionados con la temática de cada jornada, que difunde a los medios de comunicación y mediante los canales propios de la Fundación. Así, en 2016 presentó datos de interés sobre la relación entre agua y trabajo, y publicó un cartel con la imagen del bidón protagonista de la campaña #NoWalking4Water.

En 2017 se desarrollaron materiales relacionados con el tema principal de la jornada: la reutilización de las aguas residuales. Así, una infografía recogió los principales datos sobre la cuestión, entre los que destaca el hecho que cada 20 segundos muere una persona por enfermedades causadas por el mal uso del agua. Además, se dio continuidad a la campaña #NoWalking4Water con anuncios en prensa y presencia en redes sociales (1, 2, 3, 4).

Round table in Barcelona: “Reuse of water. Are we ready?”The topic proposed by United Nations for World Water Day 2017 was the reuse of waste water. In this context, the Foundation organised the round table “Reuse of water. Are we ready?” at the Roca Barcelona Gallery, where experts on water, the environment and communication discussed the opportunities and challenges of waste water.

Debates in Lisbon and Shanghai: "Why do we waste water?"The Foundation also organised debates at the Roca Lisboa Gallery and Roca Shanghai Gallery with the title "Why do we waste water? Diagnosis and solutions” in 2017. The activity in Lisbon gathered representatives of the main local environmental institutions, university professors and researchers. The meeting in Shanghai was also attended by representatives of local associations and researchers.

Dissemination of knowledge and media impact Along with the organisation of specific campaigns and the organisation of talks and conferences, the Foundation takes advantage of the media interest generated by World Water Day to spread data and information related to this matter on a massive scale. To do this, it designs infographics and specific banners related to the topic of this special day every year, which are sent to the media and disseminated through the Foundation’s own channels. Interesting information on the relationship between water and work was presented in 2016 and a banner with the image of the drum appearing in the campaign #NoWalking4Water was also published.

Contents related to the key topic of that day were developed in 2017: the reuse of waste water. An infographic gathered the key facts on this matter, highlighting the fact that one person dies every 20 seconds due to diseases caused by the misuse of water. Moreover, the campaign #NoWalking4Water continued with press advertisements and presence on social media (1, 2, 3, 4).



Día Mundial del RetreteWorld Toilet DayMás de 280.000 personas de todo el mundo mueren cada año por diarrea a causa de un saneamiento deficiente. La falta de saneamiento básico afecta a 2.400 millones de personas, de las cuales 869 millones todavía defecan al aire libre. Por este motivo, Naciones Unidas impulsa desde 2013 el Día Mundial del Retrete, una jornada de concienciación que pretende sensibilizar a la población sobre esta problemática. La Fundación We Are Water participa en esta jornada organizando diferentes actos para reflexionar y concienciar sobre esta temática.

For this reason, United Nations drives the World Toilet Day since 2013, an awareness-raising day that aims to make the population aware of this problem. Mesas redondas en Madrid, Lisboa y Shanghái (2016)En ocasión del Día Mundial del Retrete 2016 –desarrollado con el lema “Aseos y empleo”–, la Fundación We Are Water organizó mesas redondas en Roca Madrid Gallery y Roca Lisboa Gallery bajo el título “Saneamiento: el motor del progreso”. Los encuentros reunieron a profesionales de diversas disciplinas (fotografía, ingeniería, arqueología, cooperación) para debatir sobre la importancia del saneamiento a lo largo de las civilizaciones. El encuentro en Lisboa se aprovechó también para presentar diversos proyectos de rehabilitación urbana con soluciones sostenibles.

Por su parte, el Roca Shanghai Gallery acogió un evento organizado junto con la asociación Green Initiatives, en el que se expusieron los problemas relacionados con las dificultades de acceso al agua tanto en países desarrollados como en vías de desarrollo.

Impacto en todo el mundo: acciones en Reino Unido, India, Rusia, Bulgaria, Rumanía…Junto con la difusión de una infografía que recogió los principales datos de saneamiento en el mundo, la Fundación también desarrolló acciones específicas en diversos países, que contribuyeron a dar a conocer el problema. En Reino Unido se difundió un vídeo por redes sociales que consiguió alcanzar a una gran parte de la sociedad del país; en Nueva Delhi se realizó una acción callejera, con la instalación de siluetas de personas en cuclillas, simulando las millones de personas en India que no disponen de acceso a un retrete; en Rusia se lanzó una nota de prensa específica con el apoyo de la infografía traducida al ruso; y en Bulgaria y Rumanía se realizó una campaña en redes sociales y se gestionó la publicación de artículos en medios locales (1, 2, 3).

Round tables in Madrid, Lisbon and Shanghai (2016)In order to commemorate World Toilet Day 2016 –developed with the slogan “Toilets and employment”–, the We Are Water Foundation organised round tables at the Roca Madrid Gallery and Roca Lisboa Gallery with the title “Sanitation: the engine of progress”. These meetings gathered professionals from different disciplines (photography, engineering, archaeology, cooperation) to discuss the importance of sanitation throughout history. The meeting in Lisbon was also used to present different urban rehabilitation projects with sustainable solutions.

The Roca Shanghai Gallery also hosted an event organised in collaboration with the Green Initiatives association, in which the different problems related to the difficult access to water in developed and developing countries were addressed.

Worldwide impact: actions in the United Kingdom, India, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania…Along with the dissemination of an infographic that included the main sanitation data in the world, the Foundation also developed specific actions in different countries, which helped make the problem known. A video was screened through the social media in the United Kingdom, which was able to reach a significant proportion of the population; a street action was carried out in New Delhi, with the installation of silhouettes of people crouching down, replicating the millions of people in India that do not have access to a toilet; a specific press release was published in Russia, with the support of the infographic translated into Russian; and a social media campaign was carried out in Bulgaria and Romania, along with the publishing of articles in local newspapers. Encuentros en Barcelona, Lisboa, Shanghái y Beijing (2017)El tema principal del Día Mundial del Retrete 2017 fue las aguas residuales, que planteó los objetivos de hacer llegar a todas las personas un sistema de saneamiento seguro y eficaz antes de 2030, reducir a la mitad la proporción de aguas residuales no tratadas e incrementar el reciclaje y la reutilización segura. En ocasión de esta jornada se organizó una mesa redonda en Roca Barcelona Gallery, en la que representantes de diferentes ONGs debatieron sobre cuáles son las claves de un saneamiento mejorado. Durante el acto también se presentó el manual de letrinas, que expone las características que definen un sistema seguro, responsable y sostenible de desecho de las heces.

El debate en Roca Lisboa Gallery se desarrolló bajo el título “Saneamiento. Un largo camino”, que reflexionó sobre el impacto de la falta de saneamiento en la salud pública. Además, se presentó un proyecto realizado por la organización WACT-We Are Changing Together en Cabo Verde. Por su parte, el Roca Shanghai Gallery acogió un encuentro con expertos, organizado en colaboración con la asociación Green Initiatives; y en el Roca Beijing Gallery se organizó una mesa redonda en colaboración con el China Global Philanthropy Institute (1, 2, 3, 5).

"The Poo Journey", la visualización del reto del saneamientoLa actividad comunicativa de la jornada se centró en la difusión de la infografía "The Poo Journey (El viaje de las heces)", que muestra visualmente la necesidad de contener, transportar, tratar y eliminar las deposiciones de la forma más segura posible. Entre los datos recogidos por los materiales de comunicación desarrollados por la Fundación destaca el hecho que solo el 39% de la población mundial disfruta de un sistema de saneamiento seguro y podrían evitarse más de 842.000 muertes al año si pudiesen disponer de agua segura (4).

Meetings in Barcelona, Lisbon, Shanghai and Beijing (2017)The key issue on World Toilet Day 2017 was waste water, which established the goals of bringing safe and efficient sanitation to everyone by 2030, reducing by half the proportion of untreated waste water and increasing recycling and safe reuse. A round table was organised at the Roca Barcelona Gallery to commemorate this special day, in which representatives of different NGOs discussed which are the keys to improved sanitation. The latrine manual was also presented during this event, which sets out the features that define a safe, responsible and sustainable system to dispose of faeces.

The debate at the Roca Lisboa Gallery took place under the title “Sanitation. A long way”, reflecting on the impact the lack of sanitation has on public health. Moreover, a project carried out by the WACT-We Are Changing Together organisation in Cabo Verde was also presented. The Roca Shanghai Gallery hosted a meeting with experts, organised in collaboration with the Green Initiatives association; and the Roca Beijing Gallery organised a round table in collaboration with the China Global Philanthropy Institute (1, 2, 3, 5).

"The Poo Journey", the visualization of the sanitation challengeThe communication activity of this day focused on the dissemination of the infographic "The Poo Journey”, which visually displays the need to store, transport, treat and eliminate waste in the safest way possible. Some of the data gathered by the Foundation states that only 39% of the world population has a safe sanitation system and 842,000 annual deaths could be avoided if safe water was available (4).

Ciclo "Smartwater""Smartwater" cycle

El constante incremento demográfico en Latinoamérica, la concentración de población en zonas urbanas y el creciente interés turístico han convertido a las principales ciudades del continente en metrópolis de millones de personas. Este fenómeno afecta a la gestión de recursos, con crecientes dificultades respecto al abastecimiento de agua a la población. Con el objetivo de analizar y dar visibilidad a esta problemática, la Fundación organiza la serie de jornadas "Smartwater. Arquitectura, tecnología, diseño al servicio del agua y la sociedad", iniciada en 2014 y que ha tenido continuidad con nuevos encuentros en Barcelona y Ciudad de México.

The constant demographic growth in Latin America, the concentration of the population in urban areas and the growing tourist interest have transformed the main cities of the continent in metropolis with millions of inhabitants. This phenomenon is affecting the management of resources, with growing difficulties in the water supply for the population. With the aim of analyzing and providing visibility to this problem, the Foundation organizes the series of conferences "Smartwater. Architecture, technology, design at the service of water and society" started in 2014 and which has continued with new meetings in Barcelona and Mexico City.

"Smartwater, Smartcities" (Barcelona): cooperación entre Europa y Latinoamérica Con el objetivo de debatir y analizar la situación actual y la perspectiva del sistema de aguas en México y Centroamérica, en noviembre de 2016 se organizó una nueva edición de la mesa redonda "Smartwater, Smartcities", tras el éxito de las dos jornadas anteriores celebradas en México en 2014 y 2015.

La jornada, celebrada en el marco del Salón iWater, contó con la participación de profesionales de diferentes disciplinas como Jorge y Arturo Arditti, de Arditti Arquitectos; Albert Soler, documentalista; Shuichi Kobari, director de Toyo Ito Arquitectos Asociados en España; Ignacio Elburgo, director general de Fluidra; o Santiago González, director ejecutivo de Naos. Para debatir sobre las nuevas soluciones y oportunidades de cooperación entre Europa y Latinoamérica entorno a la problemática del agua se contó con David Cámara, secretario general de UNEX, como comisario de la jornada (4).

"Smartwater, Smartshopping" (Ciudad de México): gestión del agua en el sector comercialLa cuarta jornada del ciclo "Smartwater" se celebró en diciembre de 2017 en el Museo Memoria y Tolerancia de Ciudad de México bajo el título "Smartwater, Smartshopping". En esta ocasión, el debate se centró en la gestión de los recursos hídricos en el ámbito del comercio, tanto grandes establecimientos como retail, una de las principales áreas de desarrollo, diseño y construcción en México y otros países de Latinoamérica y el Caribe.

Con el objetivo de ofrecer una perspectiva global de la cuestión, el debate contó con la participación de representantes de los diversos eslabones de la cadena de valor del agua: reguladores, grandes consumidores, operadores, desarrolladores comerciales, ingenierías especializadas en agua en espacios comerciales, arquitectos y diseñadores (1, 2, 3).

"Smartwater, Smartcities" (Barcelona): cooperation between Europe and Latin AmericaWith the aim of debating and analyzing the current situation and the prospect of the water system in Mexico and Central America, a new edition of the round table "Smartwater, Smartcities", was organized in November 2016 after the success of the two previous editions that took place in Mexico in 2014 and 2015.

The conference, celebrated within the framework of the iWater conference, included the participation of professionals from different fields such as Jorge and Arturo Arditti, from Arditti Arquitectos; Albert Soler, documentary maker; Shuichi Kobari, director of Toyo Ito Arquitectos Asociados in Spain; Ignacio Elburgo, managing director of Fluidra; or Santiago González, executive director of Naos. David Cámara, general secretary of UNEX, was appointed the curator of the conference in order to debate the new solutions and cooperation opportunities between Europe and Latin America on the water problem (4).

"Smartwater, Smartshopping" (Mexico City): water management in the business sectorThe fourth conference of the "Smartwater" series, with the title "Smartcity, Smartshopping", took place at the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia in Mexico City in December 2017. The debate focused on the management of water resources in the field of commerce, both retail and wholesale, which is one of the main areas of development, design and construction in Mexico and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With the aim of providing a global perspective of this issue, the debate was attended by representatives of the different links in the value chain of water: regulators, large consumers, operators, commercial developers, engineering companies specializing in water in commercial premises, architects and designers (1, 2, 3).

Nueva sede de la Fundación en IndiaLa Fundación We Are Water ha desarrollado desde 2011 más de una decena de proyectos de carácter educacional, sanitario y de remodelación de infraestructuras en diversas zonas de India para ofrecer a sus ciudadanos mejoras relevantes en el acceso al agua y el saneamiento. Estos proyectos han beneficiado hasta la fecha a más de 100.000 personas.

Para realizar un seguimiento más cercano de estos proyectos, así como prestar mayor apoyo a las iniciativas de administraciones y entidades locales, en agosto de 2017 se inauguró la primera sede de la Fundación en India. Durante el acto se destacó la importancia de esta presencia sobre el terreno en el segundo país más poblado del planeta, y uno de los más afectados por la escasez de agua potable y con mayores deficiencias en los sistemas de saneamiento. Por ejemplo, India cuenta con el mayor número de personas del mundo que defecan al aire libre: más de 600 millones de habitantes sin acceso a un retrete.

Durante la presentación se realizó un debate sobre la situación actual del problema en India y también se anunció el lanzamiento de la nueva campaña “The hidden life of water”, dirigida a dar a conocer ideas y hechos sobre el agua, decisivos en la vida cotidiana pero comúnmente desconocidos. El objetivo es desarrollar una mayor conciencia de lo esencial que es el agua para llevar una vida digna y erradicar la pobreza (1, 2, 3, 4).

New subsidiary of the Foundation in IndiaThe We Are Water Foundation has developed over ten educational, health and remodeling projects in different areas of India since 2011 in order to offer its citizens relevant improvements in the access to water and sanitation. So far, these projects have benefited over 100,000 people.

In order to monitor these projects closely and provide a greater support to the initiatives of local administrations and institutions, the first subsidiary of the Foundation in India was opened in August 2017. The importance of the presence of the Foundation in the second most populated country in the world and one of the most affected by the lack of drinking water with one of the most deficient sanitation systems in the world was highlighted during the presentation. For instance, India is host to the greatest number of people that defecate in the open: over 600 million of its inhabitants do not have access to a toilet.

A debate on the current situation of the problem in India was held during the presentation and the launch of the new campaign “The hidden life of water” was also announced, with the goal of introducing ideas and facts about water, crucial in our daily lives but commonly unknown. The aim of this campaign is to develop greater awareness of the essential role of water in order to lead a dignified life and eradicate poverty (1, 2, 3, 4).

13th International Forum on Weather and ClimateCon el objetivo de dar apoyo y visibilidad a la función social que desempeñan los profesionales de la meteorología y en su tarea de ayudar en la problemática del cambio climático, la Fundación participó en el 13th International Forum on Weather and Climate celebrado en París en mayo de 2016. Durante el encuentro, la Fundación tuvo ocasión de presentar su actividad a la ministra de Medio Ambiente, Energía y el Mar de Francia, Ségolène Royal (4).

Ciclo "Agua y Metrópolis"Organizado por la Fundación y Casa Amèrica Catalunya para abordar la gestión del agua en Latinoamérica. La conferencia "México: la vuelta a la ciudad lacustre" trató la crisis del agua en grandes ciudades de México, con la participación del arquitecto Alberto Kalach. Por su parte, "La acción política en la crisis del agua en Latinoamérica" abordó la relación entre agua y política con el ingeniero y político chileno Sergio Bitar (3).

Ciclo "Development by Design"La Fundación colaboró con School of Architecture UIC Barcelona y Roca en dos encuentros celebrados en Roca Barcelona Gallery para mostrar el papel que juegan el diseño y la arquitectura en la resolución de problemáticas relacionadas con el espacio de territorios marginales o afectados por el cambio climático (1, 2).

Conferencia de Martha Thorne en MarruecosEncuentro celebrado en Casablanca (Marruecos), en el que la Fundación presentó su actividad y los proyectos de cooperación que lleva a cabo en el país. 13th International Forum on Weather and ClimateWith the goal of supporting and providing visibility to the social role played by meteorologists and in its aim of supporting the climate change problem, the Foundation participated in the 13th International Forum on Weather and Climate celebrated in Paris in May 2016. During the conference, the Foundation had the chance of presenting its activity to the French Minister of the Environment, Energy and Sea, Ségolène Royal (4).

Series of talks "Water and Metropolis"Organized by the Foundation and Casa Amèrica Catalunya to address the water management in Latin America. The talk ‘Mexico: the return to the lakeside city’ discussed the water crisis in the large cities in Mexico with the participation of the renowned Mexican architect Alberto Kalach. "The political action in the water crisis in Latin America" addressed the relationship between water and politics with the Chilean engineer and politician Sergio Bitar (3).

Series of talks "Development by Design"Along with the School of Architecture UIC Barcelona and Roca, the Foundation collaborated in two meetings that took place at the Roca Barcelona Gallery with the aim of showing the relevant role played by design and architecture in the solving of problems related to space in marginal territories or those affected by climate change (1, 2).

Talk by Martha Thorne in MoroccoMeeting held in Casablanca (Morocco), where the Foundation presented its activity and the cooperation projects it carries out in the country. Martha Thorne, executive director of the Pritzker prizes, gave a talk on the relationship of water and urban planning (5).

'Workshop': "A Lab on Labs for Social Innovation 2017"La Fundación participó en junio de 2017 en un workshop sobre laboratorios de innovación social celebrado en la sede del Institute for Social Innovation de ESADE Business School. El objetivo del taller fue reunir ideas significativas sobre cómo abordar los retos actuales y generar propuestas para un cambio positivo, escalable y sostenible. Además de la Fundación, participaron en el encuentro compañías y asociaciones de referencia internacional en sus respectivos sectores, como The Rockefeller Foundation, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Nesta, BBVA, LUCA -unidad de servicios Big Data de Telefónica-, Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Elisava, Obra Social "la Caixa" o el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona (1).

Encuentro “The WASH Community of Practice (CoP)” en ZambiaEntre el 25 y el 27 de abril de 2017 se celebró en Livingstone (Zambia) la reunión “The WASH Community of Practice (CoP)”, organizada por World Vision, con la presencia de cerca de 115 representantes de asociaciones, administraciones o entidades colaboradoras de proyectos relacionados con el saneamiento y acceso al agua, procedentes de 45 países, entre ellos, miembros de la Fundación We Are Water.

El encuentro se dirigió a compartir experiencias y conocimientos con el objetivo de trabajar conjuntamente para proveer de agua limpia y saneamiento digno e higiene adecuada a todos los niños de las áreas del programa de World Vision antes de 2030. Al cierre de la reunión, todos los participantes firmaron su compromiso con este objetivo (2, 3, 4).

Workshop: "A Lab on Labs for Social Innovation 2017"The Foundation participated in a workshop on laboratories of social innovation celebrated at the headquarters of the Institute for Social Innovation of ESADE Business School in June 2017. The aim of this workshop was to gather significant ideas on how to address the current challenges and to generate proposals for a positive, scalable and sustainable change. Apart from the Foundation, leading international companies and associations, such as The Rockefeller Foundation, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Nesta, BBVA, LUCA –Big Data services unit of Telefónica-, Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Elisava, Obra Social "la Caixa" or the Barcelona Town Hall also took part in this event (1).

Meeting “The WASH Community of Practice (CoP)” in ZambiaThe meeting “The WASH Community of Practice (CoP)”, organized by World Vision, took place in Livingstone (Zambia) from the 25th to the 27th April 2017. The meeting was attended by nearly 115 representatives of associations, institutions or benefactors of projects related to sanitation and access to water from 45 countries, several members of the We Are Water Foundation were among them.

The meeting enabled the sharing of experiences and knowledge in order to work together to provide clean water, appropriate sanitation and adequate hygiene to all children in the areas of World Vision’s programme before 2030. All participants signed their commitment to this goal at the end of the meeting (2, 3, 4).

Lanzamiento de un proyecto educativo para centros escolaresLa Fundación inició en 2016 el desarrollo de un proyecto educativo sobre el buen uso del agua y el respeto por el medioambiente. El proyecto consta de tres talleres experimentales: “Limpiamos el agua”, sobre la importancia del agua potable en la salud y la educación, así como los efectos en la economía; “El caso del mar de Aral”, con el objetivo de conocer la capacidad de impacto de la humanidad en los ciclos naturales y sus consecuencias en la población; y "La calidad del agua de baño", centrado en estudiar la calidad del agua y la arena de las playas de Barcelona.

En el curso 2016-2017 se realizaron 42 talleres en 17 centros educativos, con 850 alumnos participantes de entre 6 y 14 años. Esta primera edición se centró en escuelas de Cataluña, con contenidos alineados con las competencias de la asignatura de ciencias, pero en siguientes fases se prevé su extensión a centros de toda España y Europa.

La valoración de los participantes ha sido muy positiva y entre los aspectos más valorados destacan el interés de los temas tratados, la variedad de formatos y la posibilidad de acceder a contenidos actualizados. La Fundación ofrece estos talleres gratuitamente, con el objetivo de que lleguen al mayor número de centros posible (1, 2, 3, 4).

Launch of an educational project for schoolsThe Foundation started the development of an educational project on the good use of water and the respect for the environment in 2016. The project is made up of three experimental workshops: “We clean water”, about the importance of drinking water for health and education, as well as its effects on the economy; “The example of the Aral Sea”, with the aim of discovering mankind’s ability to make an impact on the natural cycles and its consequences on the population; and "The quality of bathing water", focused on studying the quality of water and sand in the Barcelona beaches.

42 workshops were carried out in 17 schools in the school year 2016-2017, with the participation of 850 students with ages ranging from 6 to 14. This first edition focused on schools in Catalonia, with contents aligned with the competences of the science subject, but its extension to other schools in Spain and Europe is planned.

The evaluation of the participants has been very positive and they have highlighted the interest of the addressed topics, the variety of formats and the possibility to access updated contents as some of the most valued aspects. The Foundation offers these workshops for free, with the aim of reaching the highest number of possible centers (1, 2, 3 , 4).

Lanzamiento de un manual de construcción de pozos y letrinasLa Fundación ha plasmado su experiencia y conocimientos en proyectos de saneamiento en la publicación de un manual de construcción de pozos y letrinas, que fue presentado en el marco de los actos del Día Mundial del Retrete 2017. Elaborado con el asesoramiento técnico de Roca, el objetivo de esta publicación es proporcionar soluciones eficaces, autosuficientes, sostenibles, de bajo consumo de agua y bajo coste para mejorar la vida de millones de personas.

El manual se dirige especialmente a países y comunidades donde el saneamiento es un problema o un tabú, y que presenten dificultades en los sistemas de recogida del agua. En el caso de las letrinas, señala que deben cumplir tres características básicas: un bajo mantenimiento, una alta eficacia y la posibilidad de construirse con materiales locales. Para ello, plantea dos propuestas de unidad higiénica: un modelo con pozos dobles y otro de pozo simple dividido en dos compartimientos. En cuanto a los pozos de agua, recomienda pozos excavados, hincados o aforados para extraer y almacenar el agua de la forma más productiva y autónoma (1, 2, 3).

Presentación a asociaciones colaboradorasLa Fundación presentó el manual a las principales asociaciones con las que colabora en proyectos de cooperación: Oxfam Intermón, Save the Children, UNICEF, Educo, Fundación Vicente Ferrer, Mujeres por África y World Vision. Los representantes de las ONG consideraron que el manual supone una herramienta muy necesaria para difundir las buenas prácticas en la construcción de letrinas, y se comprometieron a colaborar en su adaptación a las necesidades y circunstancias específicas de las regiones donde desarrollan su actividad (4).

Presentation of a manual for the construction of wells and latrinesThe Foundation has captured its experience and knowledge in sanitation projects in a manual for the construction of wells and latrines, which was presented as part of the events to commemorate World Toilet Day 2017. Developed with Roca’s technical assistance, the goal of this publication is to provide efficient, self-sufficient, sustainable and low-cost solutions with a low consumption of water in order to improve the living conditions of millions of people.

The manual is especially aimed at countries and communities where sanitation is a problem or a taboo and where the water collection systems present difficulties. As for latrines, it states that they need to comply with three basic requirements: a low maintenance, a high efficiency and the possibility of being built with local materials. In order to do this, it presents two proposals of hygienic units: one model with double wells and another one with a simple well divided into two compartments. As for the water wells, it recommends dug, drilled or driven wells in order to extract and store water in the most productive and autonomous way (1, 2, 3).

Presentation to partner associationsThe Foundation presented the manual to the main associations it collaborates with since its establishment: Oxfam Intermón, Save the Children, UNICEF, Educo, Fundación Vicente Ferrer, Mujeres por África and World Vision. The representatives of the NGOs considered that the manual is an essential tool to spread the good practices in the building of latrines, and they expressed their commitment to collaborating in their adaptation to the specific needs and circumstances of the regions where they develop their activity (4).

Premios y reconocimientosPremios iAgua de comunicación

Roca Madrid Gallery acogió a finales de 2016 la tercera edición de los premios iAgua, que reconocen las mejores prácticas en el ámbito de la comunicación en el sector del agua. La Fundación We Are Water consiguió cinco nominaciones y obtuvo dos galardones: premio al Mejor Reportaje de Magazine por “Contaminantes emergentes: enemigos ocultos en casa” y premio a la Mejor Presentación a Carlos Garriga, project manager de la Fundación (2, 4).

Reconocimientos a la sostenibilidad en certámenes profesionalesLa Fundación aprovecha la repercusión de concursos con participación de Roca para incorporar reconocimientos específicos a la sostenibilidad y contribuir a la difusión del concepto en diversos ámbitos profesionales. Entre las novedades de los últimos años destaca la entrega en 2016 de un galardón especial al Hotel Sostenible en los Premios Roca a la Iniciativa Hotelera, organizados por la revista Gran Hotel Turismo de Curt Ediciones y patrocinados por Roca. Con este premio, la Fundación reconoce la propuesta más sostenible e innovadora en ahorro de agua y energía (5).

En la misma línea, la Fundación entregó en octubre de 2017 una mención especial al proyecto más sostenible entre los participantes del concurso One Day Design Challenge celebrado simultáneamente en Madrid y Barcelona. El proyecto galardonado fue “Sinara” de Alicja Anna Kubicka, de la Poznan University of Technology (Polonia), que propone reutilizar el agua del baño mediante plantas que filtran las aguas grises (3).

Destaca también la entrega en 2017 de la segunda edición del premio especial al proyecto más sostenible en el concurso de diseño internacional Jumpthegap, que Roca organiza junto con BCD Barcelona Centre de Disseny. El reconocimiento recayó en un proyecto diseñado por Michal Hondo y Kinga Grzybowska: una ducha con mamparas extensibles y que integra un deshumidificador que transforma el vapor de agua en agua. Tras siete ediciones y con la participación de jóvenes talentos de más de 130 países, Jumpthegap se ha consolidado como un referente mundial en su sector (1).

Awards and recognitions iAgua Communication awardsThe third edition of the iAgua awards took place at the Roca Madrid Gallery at the end of 2016. These awards recognize the best practices in the field of communication in the water sector. The We Are Water Foundation obtained five nominations and two prizes: award to the Best Magazine Report for “Emerging pollutants: hidden enemies at home” and award to the Best Presentation to Carlos Garriga, Project Manager of the We Are Water Foundation (2, 4).

Recognition to sustainability in professional contestsThe Foundation takes advantage of the impact of the competitions sponsored by Roca to incorporate specific recognitions to sustainability and to contribute to the dissemination of the concept in different professional fields. Some of the highlights of these past years include the presentation of a special award to a Sustainable Hotel at the Roca Awards to Hotel Initiative in 2016, organized by the Gran Hotel Turismo magazine, from Curt Ediciones publishing house and sponsored by Roca. With this award, the Foundation recognizes the most sustainable and innovative proposal in terms of water and energy saving (5).

Along this same line, the Foundation presented a special mention to the most sustainable project at the One Day Design Challenge competition, which took place simultaneously in Madrid and Barcelona in October 2017. The winning project was “Sinara” by Alicja Anna Kubicka, from the Poznan University of Technology (Poland), which proposes the reuse of the water of the bath by means of plants that filter gray water (3).

The presentation of the most sustainable project at the international design competition Jumpthegap in 2017 also stands out, an event organized by Roca along with the BCD Barcelona Centre de Disseny. This recognition was presented to the project designed by Michal Hondo and Kinga Grzybowska: a shower with extendible screens that integrates a dehumidifier that transforms steam into water. After seven editions and with the participation of young talents from over 130 countries, Jumpthegap has consolidated as a world reference in its sector (1).

ExposicionesA lo largo de los ejercicios de 2016 y 2017, la Fundación ha organizado las siguientes exposiciones:

“My toilet: historias de mujeres y niñas de todo el mundo": comisariada por Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) e inaugurada en mayo de 2016 en Roca Barcelona Gallery, presentó 35 retratos de mujeres y niñas de todo el mundo con el objetivo de mostrar la influencia que tiene en la calidad de vida y la privacidad de las mujeres el acceso a un baño decente y un saneamiento adecuado. Posteriormente, la muestra viajó a Roca Lisboa Gallery (1, 3).

“Anupama Kundoo: High-speed housing”: muestra que recoge el trabajo de la destacada arquitecta Anupama Kundoo, reconocida por sus construcciones basadas en técnicas sostenibles y económicamente asequibles que se adaptan a los contextos socio-económicos de cada zona. La exposición, celebrada en Roca London Gallery, quiso mostrar cómo estas propuestas, caracterizadas por su ligereza y resistencia, pueden llegar cubrir la falta de viviendas o de sistemas de saneamiento en lugares desfavorecidos de todo el mundo. Algunos prototipos exhibidos en la muestra fueron "Full Fill Home" y "Easy WC" (2, 4).

"Planet (a) Tuvalu": exposición fotográfica que documenta el día a día de los habitantes del archipiélago de Tuvalu, ubicado en la región de Polinesia, en el oceáno Pacífico. Estas islas corren el riesgo de desaparecer debido a las consecuencias del cambio climático, por lo que la muestra pretende llamar la atención sobre una consecuencia muy directa del calentamiento global. Fue inaugurada en febrero de 2016 en Roca Lisboa Gallery.

ExhibitionsThroughout 2016 and 2017, the Foundation has organized the following exhibitions:

“My toilet: stories of women and girls all around the world”: curated by Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and organized at the Roca Barcelona Gallery in May 2016, this exhibition displayed 35 portraits of women and girls from all over the world with the aim of showing how important the access to a decent bathroom and to adequate sanitation can be for the quality of life and intimacy of women. The exhibition then travelled to the Roca Lisboa Gallery (1, 3).

“Anupama Kundoo: High-speed housing”: exhibition that gathers the work of the renowned architect Anupama Kundoo, famous for her constructions based on sustainable and affordable building techniques that adapt to the socioeconomic context of each region. The exhibition, held at the Roca London Gallery, intended to show how these proposals, defined by their lightness and endurance, may cover the lack of housing or sanitation systems in disadvantaged areas all around the world. Some of the prototypes displayed at the exhibition were "Full Fill Home" and "Easy WC" (2, 4).

"Planet (a) Tuvalu": photographic exhibition that documents the daily life of the inhabitants of the Tuvalu archipelago, located in the Polynesia region, in the Pacific Ocean. These islands risk disappearing due to the consequences of climate change; the exhibition wishes therefore to draw attention on a very direct consequence of global warming. It opened in February 2016 at the Roca Lisboa Gallery.

1. Acceso al agua potable Se mide por el número de personas que pueden obtener agua potable con razonable facilidad y se expresa en forma de porcentaje de la población total. Es un indicador de la salud de la población y de la capacidad del país de conseguir agua, purificarla y distribuirla.

2. Acceso al saneamiento Proporción de la población que tiene al menos unas instalaciones adecuadas para la eliminación de excrementos a fin de evitar que éstos entren en contacto con seres humanos, animales e insectos. Las instalaciones adecuadas abarcan desde las sencillas pero protegidas letrinas de pozo hasta inodoros con agua corriente y alcantarillado.

3. Agua dulce Agua que se encuentra en la superficie de la tierra en glaciares, lagos y ríos (agua superficial), y bajo tierra en acuíferos (agua subterránea). El factor clave es la baja concentración de sales disueltas. El término excluye el agua de lluvia, el agua almacenada en el suelo (humedad del suelo), el agua residual no tratada, el agua de mar y el agua salobre.

4. Agua superficial Agua que se encuentra en la superficie de la tierra y que está naturalmente abierta a la atmósfera, ya sea en los arroyos, los ríos, los estanques, los lagos, los humedales o los océanos.

5. Cambio climático La Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (CMCC), en su artículo 1, lo define como: «un cambio de clima atribuido directa o indirectamente a la actividad humana que altera la composición de la atmósfera mundial y que se suma a la variabilidad natural del clima observada durante períodos de tiempo comparables».

6. Contaminación del agua Presencia en el agua de sustancias químicas o de otra naturaleza en concentraciones superiores a las condiciones naturales. Entre los contaminantes más importantes se encuentran los microbios, los nutrientes, los metales pesados, los químicos orgánicos, los aceites y los sedimentos, entre otros.

7. Defecación al aire libre Defecación en campos, bosques, arbustos, cuerpos de agua u otros espacios abiertos, o eliminación de las heces humanas con residuos sólidos.

8. Escasez de agua Punto en que el impacto agregado de todos los usuarios, bajo un determinado orden institucional, afecta al suministro o a la calidad del agua, de forma que la demanda de todos los sectores, incluido el medioambiental, no puede satisfacerse por completo.

9. Fuente de agua potable mejorada Fuente que por el tipo de construcción protege apropiadamente el agua de la contaminación exterior, en particular de la materia fecal.

10. Fuentes de agua potable no mejoradas Incluye desde un pozo excavado no cubierto, una fuente no tapada, un carro con un tanque o bidón pequeño, y un camión cisterna hasta el agua de superficie (río, presa, lago, laguna, arroyo, canal, canal de irrigación) y el agua embotellada.

11. Higiene Conjunto de prácticas, como el lavado frecuente de manos, que ayudan a mantener la limpieza y la buena salud.

12. Huella hídrica Volumen de agua dulce empleado directa e indirectamente para producir un bien.

13. Instalaciones de saneamiento compartidas Instalaciones aceptables de saneamiento compartidas entre dos o más hogares. Entre ellas cabe destacar los inodoros públicos.

14. Instalaciones de saneamiento mejoradas Instalaciones que garantizan de manera higiénica que no se produzca ningún contacto de las personas con excrementos humanos.

15. Instalaciones de saneamiento no mejoradas Instalaciones que no garantizan de manera higiénica que no se produzca ningún contacto de las personas con los excrementos humanos. Entre ellas hay que incluir las letrinas de pozo sin losa o plataforma, las letrinas colgantes y las letrinas de cubo.

16. Seguridad alimentaria La Cumbre Mundial sobre Alimentación de 1996 definió la seguridad alimentaria como aquella que se da cuando todas las personas tienen en todo momento acceso físico y económico a alimentos suficientes, seguros y nutritivos para satisfacer sus necesidades alimenticias a fin de poder llevar una vida activa y sana.

17. Sistema de agua corriente Conexión de agua por tubería situada en el interior de la vivienda, patio o parcela.

18. Uso de agua Aplicación o utilización deliberada del agua para un fin determinado.

1. Access to water Access to safe water is measured by the number of people, as a percentage of the total population, who can obtain drinking water with reasonable ease. It is an indicator of the health of the country’s population and of the country’s ability to obtain, purify and distribute water.

2. Access to sanitation This refers to the proportion of the population that has at least adequate facilities for the disposal of human feces to prevent them from coming into contact with humans, animals and insects. Adequate facilities range from simple but protected pit latrines to toilets with running water and a sewage system.

3. Freshwater Water that is on the earth’s surface in glaciers, lakes and rivers (surface water), and underground in aquifers (underground water). The key factor is a low concentration of dissolved salts. This term excludes rain water, water stored in the soil (soil moisture), untreated wastewater, seawater and brackish water.

4. Surface water Water found on the surface of the earth and that is naturally open to the atmosphere, whether in streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, wetlands or oceans.

5. Climate change Article 1 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) defines climate change as “a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.”

6. Water pollution Pollution is generally taken to mean the presence of chemicals or other substances in higher concentrations than under natural conditions. The most important pollutants include microbes, nutrients, heavy metals, organic chemicals, oils and sediments, among others.

7. Open defecation Defecation in fields, forests, bushes, bodies of water or other open spaces, or disposal of human feces with solid waste.

8. Water scarcity Water scarcity is defined as the point at which the aggregate impact of all users under a particular institutional system affects the supply or quality of water, so that demand from all sectors, including the environment, cannot be fully satisfied.

9. Improved drinking water source A source which, due to the nature of its construction, adequately protects the source of external contamination, in particular with fecal matter.

10. Unimproved water sources Sources which include unprotected dug wells or springs, carts with tanks or small drums, or a tank trunk up to surface water (rivers, dams, lakes, lagoons, streams, canals, irrigation channels) and bottled water.

11. Hygiene The set of practices, such as frequent hand-washing, that helps maintain cleanliness and good health.

12. Water footprint The water footprint shows the volume of freshwater used, directly and indirectly, to produce a good.

13. Shared sanitation installations Acceptable sanitation installations that are shared by two or more households, among them public toilets.

14. Improved sanitation facilities An installation that hygienically keeps human feces away from human contact.

15. Unimproved sanitation facilities Facilities that do not hygienically guarantee that humans are protected from contact with human feces. These include pit latrines without slabs or platforms, hanging latrines and bucket latrines.

16. Food security The 1996 World Food Summit defined food security as “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to meet all their food requirements in order to maintain a healthy and active life.”

17. Running water system Piped water connection located inside a residence, patio or parcel of land.

18. Use of water Any deliberate use or application of water for a particular purpose.
