NEW ORLEANS

As part of a Newsweek series imagining how major cities will deal with urban issues in the near future, EDR was asked to address how New Orleans will live, work, play, and commutein the year 2030.

In order to encourage interaction with & appreciation for the city’s natural geography, our response focused on reclaiming unused industrial spaces adjacent to different bodies of water: lake, river, surface canal, and wetlands.

Tulane’s City Center partnered with Catholic Charities to develop a phasing strategy for their main campus. The plans include Cafe Hope, a learning-cafe that offers job training for at-risk youth. The cafe utilizes an undulating, light filtering wood screen to organize the space into linear zones.

My role on the 4 person team included conceptual design and the creation of presentation & publication materials.

Who :When :

Aside from my project duties, I’m most proud of spear-heading (& attending) a 4-day Grasshopper workshop for 15 office staff led by StudioMode. It was exciting to then see GH being employed in some form on almost all projects.

Genre :Duration :

My work with Handel Architects focused on large-scale mixed-use developmets. Project locations varied greatly, including Sri Lanka, Philippines, NYC, and Boston, thus exposing me to a wide array of culturally distinct & significant design influences.

My role varied greatly by project, eventually earning me the title Fireman since I would “put out the fires” on numerous projects. My tasks included 100% Bidding Docs, 3d-printed and lasercut models, & using Grasshopper to test floor plate options inside zoning envelopes.

Completed after a semester of research, this thesis design project re-centralizes 3 disparate charter high schools in New Orleans. In doing so, smaller school units have the amenities and cross-disciplinary benefits of larger schools. All public pieces of the program are open to the public and span across the entire site. As such, the shared amenities serve as circulatory shortcuts, thereby encouraging social mixing within the school and with the community that would otherwise not occur.

PARKSCAPE

BUILDINGSCAPE

The project consists of a bathing complex located in Rome’s historic center along the bank of the Tiber River. Working in a pair and referencing the traditonal, historical procession through bathing spaces, our proposed response utilizes a triangulated & multi-purpose parkscape that shields the bathing spaces below.

Additionally, the project spatially architecturalizes the filtration of river water for potable use throughout the project’s entirety.

USGBC MODELS

EDR joined with the USGBC and the Salvation Army’s EnviRenew to realize the 4 winning designs of the USGBC’s 2010 Natural Talent Design Competition. As part of the competiton, EDR built models of the winning designs for display at the annual Greenbuild conference. The houses will be built in 2011.

Leading a team of 3 for a two- week period, I planned and oversaw the construction and successful shipping of each of the 4 models.

Weekly drawing assignments were coordinated to give students a full range of drawing and sketching experience. The drawings explored various techniques and employed multiple mediums, such as shaded pencil sketches, penned line drawings, and quick marker sketches. Emphasis was given to capturing the essence of the view in as efficient a manner as possible, ie. in a short amount time with few pen strokes.
