Spanish-American War (1898)

The Spanish-American War took place in 1898, resulting in the gain of control by the United States of America, on the former Spanish colonies in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.The Americans, claiming that the ship had been sabotaged by the Spanish, demanded that Spain ceded independence to Cuba.

2. The U.S. was given control of the islands of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.

Results of the War

1. Cuba was given its independence.

3. Spain received $20 million dollars.

Theodor Roosevelt

The U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt was convinced that the United States could complete the project of the Panama Canal that had lasted for decades, and acknowledged that the U.S. control of crossing the Atlantic to the Pacific would be an important military and economic importance.

Dollar Diplomacy was a device used by President Roosevelt to expand his importance in Latin America. Therefore dollar diplomacy means in general, use from the U.S. economic potential, aiming at the dependence of Latin American countries, and therefore manipulate them to achieve their goals in this sub-continent, which according to the manifest destiny was intended to be a U.S. territory.
