thing worth saving but it is cracked and may fall apart when we try to move it. There are some brownstone elements which may end up in our parish green or in a town park if the town or the historical society wants them. I want to assure everyone that we will do our best to save what we can save, but also feel the need to remind everyone that we do not have unlimited resources.

It’s Signed Here is a picture of me and Mr. David Manafort after I signed the most expensive contract in my life to abate and tear down the KGS building. Don Lombardo and Diane Funk were present and the contract was also reviewed by the Archdiocesan attorney. In the next few weeks, you will see some digging around the foundation of the building. The contractors will be digging around the foundation to determine if the waterproofing on the underground foundation contains the dreaded “A” word, “asbestos.” If it does, then the foundation will have to be taken to a “hot” landfill along with the roof which also contains asbestos. While I’m gone, the committee will keep you updated on what is going on over at the KGS. God Bless You!

A Few Simple Words……From Fr. Robert

Snow Snow Go Away… and don’t come back (On Snow Plowing) The Pre-K 4 kids told me a special secret. They said that when they don’t want to go to school they put an ice cube in the toilet and it snows so school is cancelled. Enough Already ! Keep the kids away from the ice cubes. On a serious note, from now on when it snows in the morn-ing and school is closed, our plow company will only plow the lower half of the church parking lot and the parking lot entrance to the Church. We can’t have him come multiple times during a storm when maybe only one person will come to church in bad weather. It is very cost prohibitive. So far we have spent $10,300 on snow removal, not including last Thurs-day’s storm. If the weather is bad stay home and watch the Mass on our internet connection. To do so, go to our website, stpaulkensing-ton.org, and click on the red button half way down the page which says “watch.” You can expand the viewing by clicking the fullscreen button in the lower right hand corner.

Thank You Just a note to thank you for your very warm reception of our parish’s Annual Report. Good news, rather great news, is always easy to share and receive. As I said, we only have such great news because we have great parishioners who assist our parish both by volunteering and sup-porting the parish financially… It’s all a tribute to you.

Three Calls I received three calls this week concerning our new membership policy. Each of the families who called stated that they attend, but don’t use envelopes. That’s your choice and you are free to do so. However, it is in your best interest to simply throw a note or an envelope with your name and address in the basket letting us know that you attend. If you do that, then we will mark you registered and active even if your giving history is 0. There are a number of families who chose to do that and we are grateful that they let us know that they attend Mass regularly. We simply can’t continue to list half of Berlin as active members when we haven’t seen them in years.

Those who ignore History are doomed to repeat it. Tonight David Cyr and I will be meeting with some members of the Berlin Historical Society. Among the items we will discuss is a suggested party or “Irish wake” for the KGS building. It will be a perfect opportunity for those who went to school in the building to share stories. We will be hap-py to offer the free use of our Church Hall for such a celebration.

In a recent letter from the Historical Society they understood that we did not have the resources to save the building, but asked that we could try and save some of the elements for the society or the town. Tonight my response will be, “Of course we will try and save anything we can from the building, as long as it doesn’t break our tight budget.” Two of the elements worth saving are the tile reliefs surrounding the water fountain in the High School portion of the building. Sadly, they are on walls cov-ered with lead paint and mounted on asbestos plaster which may make saving them difficult. The big relief outside over the steps is also some-

Today’s Gospel…. To experience the peace which Christ promises we must shed our grudges, jealousy and feelings of being misunder-stood, unappreciated or ignored. Peace and anger don’t mix. Today’s gospel warns, if you want peace in your heart and home, get rid of your anger. Anger is too costly.

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY #103 FEBRUARY 16, 2014 Editorials in the mainstream media such as the Chicago Tribune and USA Today have recently addressed the issue of religious freedom and the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate as a violation of the first amendment, which protects this right. The message is that every American has rights of conscience on the issues of contracep-tion, abortion, and sterilization. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or Secretary of Health and Hu-man Services Kathleen Sebelius at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

FOR YOUR MARRIAGE...Q & A…. PUZZLE

What's the average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker? How is the retirement benefit amount calculated? The current average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker is $1,294. Social Security benefits are based on earnings av-eraged over most of a worker's lifetime. Your actual earnings are first adjusted or "indexed" to account for changes in average wages since

the year the earnings were received. We calculate your average monthly in-dexed earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most. We apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic benefit amount. Learn more by visiting us online at www.SocialSecurity.gov.69.html.

After a civil divorce, is a Catholic obligated to pursue an annulment? Many Catholics are not exactly sure what an annulment does. An annulment does not deny that a marriage took place, nor does it deny that there once was love. It does not mean that people say anything untrue, such as they never loved each other or that everything in their marriage was wrong. An annulment does not negate children, nor make them illegitimate. An annulment addresses the spiritual aspect

of marriage. In effect, an annulment says that at the time of the wedding, there was either something present or something absent that prevented the sacrament from taking place. It is a spiritual determination that, if granted in the affirmative, allows a person to marry in the church. Annulments have no legal standing and are unable to be used in a civil court. Therefore, a Catholic has no moral obligation to pursue an annulment. How-ever, when the tragedy of divorce occurs, and there is no hope for reconcilia-tion, annulments may help bring some spiritual closure to a person's life. Some people have found the process to be healing and others have found it to be difficult. Speak to your priest or a member of the Diocesan Tribunal staff to decide what is best for you. (Liturgical Publications)

FINANCES Mixing debts and un-certain jobs makes marriage more fragile.

(used with permission)

Perhaps you are approaching marriage on a sound financial footing. You’ve finished your education, have been employed for several years, maybe even have some savings or own a house. Perhaps you are set – or so you think. But having enough money for a com-fortable lifestyle is not all that finances in marriage is about. It’s also about power. It might not seem that way at first. The two of you might have every intention of sharing incomes completely. You certainly don’t see each other as people who will dictate how much money can be spent on a cup of coffee. But weird things can happen when money is merged. Old memories from our family of origin start to replay in our heads. You may agree that it’s fine if one spouse makes more money than the other. Then the primary wage earner sees the other spending his or her hard-earned cash on something like a $50 hair cut or a round of drinks at the club. One person’s necessity is another’s luxury. What if you’re not in the enviable position of being fi-nancially stable? What if one of you still has student loans or credit card debt to pay off? Mixing debts and uncertain jobs makes marriage even more fragile. You will need much self-discipline, however, to keep strained finances from starting quarrels and poisoning your relationship.
