Each week there have been an average of 19 children and their parents/carers attending the school on Thursday mornings, to participate in a variety of activities that are focused on continuing to develop their pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills. These include reading stories, singing songs, cutting and pasting, counting and number recognition, letter identification and practicing writing their names. It has been wonderful to watch our new little Greta people settle into our setting. During their first week, the children were very shy, however as each week passes, the children arrive eager to get started and interact with the rest of the group. As of Week 10, the children will be attending without their parents/ carers and will start to navigate our school setting with the support of the staff to further develop their ability to transition into the school setting. Children becoming familiar with the school the year before starting Kindergarten, is a great way of supporting their social and academic success and alleviating the nerves that surround the milestone of starting school. I look forward to observing the children grow in confidence as the program continues to build momentum in Term 4. Leanne Jarlett Deputy Principal, Instructional Leader

SMART STARTERS 2019

Over the past three weeks, we have had the opportunity to welcome our 2020 Kindergarten students to our school through our Smart Starters transition program. As of Week 10, the children will be attending without their parents/carers and will start to navigate our school setting with the support of the staff to further develop their ability to transition into the school setting. Children becoming familiar with the school the year before starting Kindergarten, is a great way of supporting their social and academic success and alleviating the nerves that surround the milestone of starting school. YEAR 3/4B FAMILY TREES AND HERITAGE POSTERS In Stage 2 the childrens’ homework task has been to work on a poster representing their family tree, including details of their families origin, interesting family facts and sharing the many aspects of family life over the years. This ties into the unit of work they are currently studying “Changing Communities”. The students were really engaged and produced some excellent posters.

Positive Behaviour Learning

This fortnight, our students have been working hard to show Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best when sitting on the floor, handing out equipment, using equipment and collecting equipment. Students have been showing 6L’s, allowing others to learn, valuing belongings and equipment and using their manners. 6L’s is strategy used to monitor behaviour in the classroom. The 6L’s are look with our eyes, listen with our ears, legs crossed or still, lips quiet, hands in laps and to be ready to learn.

Class ‘Gecko’ jars are filling up quickly with K/1 receiving their 1st whole

class reward. K/1 decided to celebrate this achievement by all students receiving an ice block. We look forward to seeing the rewards other classes

receive in the weeks to come.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Last week, there was a buzz of excitement at the school as teachers were able to celebrate with parents all of the wonderful achievements of their children. Parent teacher interviews are a brilliant way of communicating successes and at times the struggles students are experiencing, and are an important way of continuing to build the home school links so that teachers and parents are supporting our students in the best way possible.

Unfortunately, we had two teachers that were unwell last week and have had to reschedule their interviews. If you are a parent that this applies to, both teachers will contact you when they return to make a new time to meet with you. We hope that parents find this important aspect of reporting as valuable as the teachers do. PARTNERING ACROSS THE RUTHERFORD LEARNING COMMUNITY

RTHS Gala Day On Friday 6th September, Stage 3 attended a sports gala day organised and coordinated by Rutherford Technology High School. Students from 6 schools across the Rutherford Learning Community participated in a series of round robin activities, competing in tee ball, football and touch football. A BBQ lunch was provided by the high school and was well enjoyed by all. I would like to commend all students for displaying our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. Thank you to the RTHS staff and students for a wonderful day. RTHS Enrichment Program As part of targeted transitioning to high school, some students from Stage 3 have been visiting RTHS and studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), Agriculture, Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and Forensics. Reviews of the 4 week program have been positive, and our students should be proud of themselves for displaying their Greta best with confidence during these visits.

We are grateful for the opportunity to give our students the tools to help them transition to high school. Miss Bousfield and I look forward to participating in other events hosted across the Rutherford Learning Community during the remainder of the year. Mr Cameron High School Transition Coordinator

SPELLING BEE

On Thursday the 3rd September our school had the pleasure of hosting the 2019 Regional Premiers Spelling Bee. We hosted both divisions including the junior division (years 3 and 4) and the senior division (years 5 and 6) where 2 representatives in each division from across 20 different schools competed for a single spot in the state final to be held in Sydney in November. We were very grateful to be presented with a collection of chapter books to add to our school library as a token of appreciation for hosting this event. Although our students did not progress to the state final we are proud of their achievements and the way they so wonderfully represented our school. Our finalists were: -

Stage 2: Taya N and Talan M

Stage 3: Natalie L and Jacinta W

A big thank you to our students who helped on the day:-

Chairperson: Hannah B

Timekeepers: Billy M and Leanne R.

PSSA SENIOR GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL

On Wednesday the 28th August our PSSA Senior Girls Touch Football team made a trip to Dungog to compete in our second round of the PSSA state knockout competition. The girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and determination. They were defeated by Dungog Public School but are looking forward to another opportunity to play touch football at the upcoming Maitland gala day. Miss Tatum Hassett Touch Football Coordinator
