ABOUT THE RESILIENCE DOUGHNUT

"Resilience is the process of continual development of personal competence, while navigating & negotiating with available resources in the face of adversity."  Lyn Worsley

Why is Resilience important?

People who have happy and fulfilling lives have positive life skills that help them grow through life's inevitable challenges, rather than being damaged by them.

How do we build resilience?

• In Schools the Resilience Doughnut encourages staff to use existing strong relationships around each child.

• With parents, the Resilience Doughnut encourages parents to focus on the interaction of their child's strengths.

• In organisations the Resilience Doughnut builds personal and professional resilience to enhance staff wellbeing.

Why measure resilience?

• To enable children, young people and adults to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and learning about self.

• To promote self discipline/self control. • To enable children, young people and adults to know

what resources they have to build competence to face adversity.

The Resilience Doughnut is a practical, strengths-based model for developing resilience in children, young people and adults.

Resilience in Children and Adolescents

The Resilience Doughnut is a simple and practical tool which can be used to support the development of resilience in children and adolescents. We have taught and trained many parents, teachers and practitioners across the UK and used the model directly with children and adolescents through our workshops and intervention programmes.

Resilience in Adults

The Resilience Doughnut also sheds light on how adults develop the skills for coping with adversity through their lifetime and offers insights for nurturing both personal growth and positive relationships with others. We offer a range of training and development options if you are interested in developing the resilience of adults including staff, parents and adult client groups.

What is the Resilience Doughnut?

The Resilience Doughnut is a practical, strengths-based model for developing resilience in children, young people and adults. It identifies and combines strengths needed to thrive in a modern world. Developed at the Resilience Centre Australia, the model is based on a wide body of international research examining the factors common to

2

Page 3: Resilience Doughnut UK Brochure

children, young people and adults who have shown resilience in the face of adversity. The Resilience Doughnut has had considerable success across Australia, and now spreading across Japan, South Africa and is now making an impact across the UK.

Why a doughnut?

It has been identified that there are two forces at play when looking at developing resilience:

• Internal or personal characteristics that enable a person to bounce back from adversity. These personal competences are associated with healthy development and life success.

• External or environmental influences that contribute to the building of these personal competences. These external influences interact therefore reinforcing their efficacy.

It is these internal and external factors that have been combined to form the Resilience Doughnut with I HAVE, I AM and I CAN statements including all the components of the research relating to internal characteristics and 7 external factors that are shown to contribute to building resilience.

What is different about this approach?

The Resilience Doughnut is a simple interactive tool, which combines the key areas of research models proposed over the past decade. It is important to know the research base well in order to teach the model and

so staff are equipped through our Training and Development opportunities.

Many resilience programmes exist that also tap into the enormous amount of research into building resilience. However they are complicated programmes involving working a person's self esteem and don't always involve tapping into the resources around a person, which develop and confirm self-esteem.

We don't teach people how to be resilient.

The emphasis on using the Resilience Doughnut is on the process of building both developmentally and through the manipulation of the environment, rather than a programme that teaches how to be resilient. The Resilience Doughnut creates a paradigm shift, and promotes a process of developmental change that can occur throughout a school / organisation, within each young person / adult, their homes and their communities over the course of a lifetime.

A validated measure Following a study of over 2,500 children and young people, the Resilience Doughnut is now a validated measure. It does exactly what we say it does!

TEACHER WELLBEING

Our Teacher Wellbeing modules will raise the wellbeing, morale and resilience of school staff so they can passionately teach and connect in a positive school climate.

Through extensive research, it has been shown that people who exhibit positive wellbeing have (P) positive emotions, are (E) engaged in meaningful activities, have intentional (R) relationships, have a sense of (M) mission and purpose and experience (A) achievement in their lives. These characteristics are referred to by the acronym PERMA and are the outcome of positive experiences in families, school and communities and result in a mindset that helps people to engage positively in future life experiences (Seligman, 2013).

In each of the our Teacher Wellbeing modules, skills are practiced to support staff in moving towards each of the PERMA outcomes.

For each two-hour workshop, staff will be placed into cross curricula groups (groups are allocated at the beginning of the program and maintained during learning modules). Each group will work together to discuss content, provide feedback and practice skills.

Raise the wellbeing, morale and resilience of your school staff so they can passionately teach and connect in a positive school climate.

The Modules

Our Teacher Wellbeing modules are based around the following topics:

1. Solution Focused Approach to Managing Change (personal application)

2. Optimistic and Pessimistic Thinking (personal application)

3. The Resilience Doughnut for Adults (personal application)

4. Creating a Supportive and Connected Environment (personal and professional application)

5. Classroom Coaching (professional application)

Delivery Structure  As well as running all five modules consecutively, the following approaches can be taken:

• Modules 1, 2 and 3 are available as a single development day or as three twilight sessions.

RESILIENCE REPORT

Why use the Resilience Report?

The Resilience Report provides the opportunity for those working with children and young people to support them by enabling opportunities to combine their strengths and build competence to cope during tough times. The Resilience Report can be used with an individual, class group, whole year group or whole school to identify need, target early intervention and measure impact. Measuring resilience through the Resilience Report can be incorporated as part of a Resilience Doughnut Workshop as well as the Linked Up or Connect 3 intervention programmes.

Taking a resilience snapshot  The process of taking a snapshot is broken into three steps: Resources, Adversities and Competence.

Step OneThis step uses the Resilience Doughnut strengths measure. There are 7 strength factors with 10 statements in each. The participant must answer how strongly each statement is true in describing themselves. Each factor also prompts an additional written response.

Steps Two and ThreeThese steps are the survey questions. The participant is shown a series of questions and statements, as they answer they can see their progress. Once all three steps are completed, the snapshot is complete and the user can view their Resilience Report.

The Resilience Report uses three validated measures to provide a snapshot of the specific resilience characteristics and wellbeing of young people and provides avenues for intervention and on going support. The Resilience Report for adults is also available.

The Report

View scores and results. The Resilience Report provides a measure of an individual’s competence and adversities, or in other words, what they have going for them and what is working against them. Each question in the surveys relates to a specific assessment. The report shows the scores resulting from those surveys broken down into each element. The Competence and Adversities columns highlight potential difficulties the individual may have, and the Resources column shows the strengths available to them.

Problems are highlighted at a glance. The report holds a great deal of information and include simple markers to highlight any element that requires attention. These assessments are made using a scoring scale provided by the validated measures.

See changes over time. The report works best when there are multiple snapshots taken over regular intervals. The ideal amount of time between each snapshot will vary for each individual but, as a starting point, is suggested at once every 6 months.

Strength comments.Once ‘The Resilience Doughnut’ has determined the top three strength factors, the individual has the opportunity to enter some text. They are asked what is good about that factor, why they think it is strong and what they could do to make it even stronger. These comments have proven to be acutely valuable, acting as a resilience diary for the individual, and giving group managers specific and unique information. 13

Our range of training, development, delivery and evaluation opportunities provide a sustainable whole-organisation approach to resilience and wellbeing in schools, community organisations or other public, private and third sector organisations.

To assist you in planning a sustainable approach we suggest a range of pathways as detailed below. All pathways start with the essential components of a Staff Development Day to build understanding and develop momentum across the staff team and then Level 1 Training for one or two members of the team who wish to lead its implementation. These can be done in either order.

We understand that it is essential for Level 1 trained staff to be well supported and we recommend the Level 1 Advanced Training and taking advantage of the Ongoing Training and Support from the Resilience Doughnut team. If you are using our powerful online tool then we provide Resilience Report Training and Support for you to maximise its potential. Any whole-school approach wouldn't be complete without a focus on Teacher Wellbeing and we provide a series of five solution-focussed modules, perfect for twilight delivery.
