summer as their favorite time ofyear, autumn also is a belovedseason. Cool breezes and crispair seem tailor-made for after-noons spent enjoying the greatoutdoors. The pleasant autumnweather and awe-inspiringfoliage may be the reason somany festivals and outdoorevents are scheduled this time ofyear.
Apple- and pumpkin-pickingare popular fall pastimes.Neighborhood orchards opentheir doors to the public, allowingmen, women and children toscour their fields and trees forthe perfect finds. Heed these
picking tips to make the experi-ence even more of a success.
APPLESMany orchards that have open
picking seasons plant dwarfapple trees to make the pickingprocess easier, particularly foryoung children, so there's noneed to bring along a ladder.Youshould still be able to find plentyof apples close to the ground.
A good farmer will know whencertain varieties of apples areripe, and he or she will likely cor-don off trees that are not readyfor picking. Ripe apples will becrisp and firm. Keep in mind thatapples ripen from the outside of
the tree inward. Those are theones usually picked first, anyway.
Try to get to an orchard earlierin the season. If you wait toolong, the trees may be picked ofmost of the best fruit. Dependingon where you live, apple-pickingseason may begin in mid-September and continue intomid-October.
Apples can bruise, so don'ttoss them into baskets whenpicking. Also, wait to washapples until right before eating toprevent moisture-relatedspoilage. Apples keep best in acool location.((ccoonnttiinnuueedd oonn ppaaggee 2288))

PUMPKINSPumpkin patches are often
found in close proximity to appleorchards. Picking pumpkins toeat or decorate the home is apopular autumn activity, one thatfamilies often enjoy together.
When visiting a pumpkinpatch, dress accordingly. Thatmeans wearing shoes that youdon't mind getting dirty, as thepatch may be muddy. Layerclothing in case it is a chilly day.Breezes are more pronounced inopen fields.
Pumpkins are "long-keepers,"which means if they are uncut ornot damaged, they can last forseveral weeks. This means you
can pick pumpkins at the sametime as apples. When selecting apumpkin, look for one that iscompletely orange. After picking,a green or yellow pumpkin maynever ripen to orange.
Bring along a small wagonand knife so that you can cut thevine, if necessary. Pumpkins areheavy, and a wagon will come inhandy, especially with young-sters in tow.
Ripe pumpkins should notdent easily. Examine your pump-kin for holes or insects, whichcould indicate internal rot thatgreatly reduces the shelf life ofthe pumpkin. Remember, carvingthe pumpkin reduces its life
expectancy, so be sure toreserve that task until close toHalloween.
If you desire a pumpkin to turninto a baked treat or other dish, you will need a type of small, sweet cooking pumpkin knownas a "sugar pumpkin." The meatof this pumpkin is much lessstringy and more smooth thandecorative pumpkin varieties.
Autumn is the season forapple- and pumpkin-picking. Thisis a great way to spend an after-noon outdoors with the family. Ifpossible, visit an orchard on aweekday, when the crowds willbe much smaller than duringprime fall weekends.
