Page 2: RESEARCH BULLETIN - Concordia University · “The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature,” Texas A&M University,

I am pleased to present JMSB’s latest Research Bulletin. Once again, we see that our talented faculty members continue to be recognized for their innovative, cutting edge

research across all business disciplines. On a comparative basis we continue to fare very well in research as a business school. Our colleagues at HEC Montréal noted in their own research bulletin that JMSB is sixth in Canada in terms of articles published in journals ranked in the Journal of Citation Reports Top 15%. There is an important breadth of scholarship at JMSB that characterizes our pluralistic approach to research, one that advances theory and practice and that transfers important knowledge to society.

We are increasingly working to making JMSB a top choice for students wishing to pursue research degrees in business. On November 7, our MSc and PhD students participated in the fifth Annual Graduate Research Exposition, organized by the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Research Programs. As is the case every year, their presentations demonstrated how far-ranging the research being conducted at JMSB is. I thank Linda Dyer and Ulrike de Brentani for once again serving as the event’s coordinators.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome three faculty members who have joined us recently: Ingrid Chadwick and Peter Jaskiewicz in the Department of Management and Alex Lyubimov in the Department of Accountancy. They are strong researchers joining our collective effort to propel JMSB onward as a recognized hub of knowledge creation and dissemination. Please join me in welcoming them to the JMSB family.

Congratulations to all of the faculty members for the achievements recognized in this issue of the Research Bulletin.

Steve Harvey Dean

DEAN’S MESSAGE

Page 3: RESEARCH BULLETIN - Concordia University · “The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature,” Texas A&M University,

Welcome to the Fall 2013 Edition of the JMSB Research Bulletin. This issue covers the scholarly activities for the period November 2012 to April 2013. During this time, in addition to

contributions to knowledge creation and dissemination through publications in top quality peer-reviewed journals, we also had a number of high-profile speakers visit JMSB in our ongoing seminar series sponsored by research centres and professorships.

I am also pleased to share a number of success stories from our colleagues and new appointments. Dr. Gary Johns received the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Canadian Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr. Navneet Vidyarthi received the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award in the Strategic Research Cluster ‘The Person and Society’. Dr. Kathleen Boies was appointed to the Concordia University Research Chair (Tier II) in Leadership Development and Dr. Claudine Mangen was appointed to the RBC Professorship in Responsible Organizations. Dr. Peter Jaskiewicz joined the Department of Management as the CIBC Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business. Please join me in congratulating our colleagues on their success and new appointments.

Since its inception, the research bulletin has served an important role in keeping both the internal and external communities informed of JMSB’s scholarly contributions. While we will continue to list the research accomplishments of JMSB scholars, we plan to increase the scope of coverage from the next issue onwards. As a result, starting from 2013-14, the bulletin will be produced on an annual basis with submissions invited in May, covering the contributions for the preceding academic year.

I thank Yuri Mytko and Arlene Segal for putting this bulletin together. I wish you continued success with your scholarly activities and look forward to more contributions in future editions of the research bulletin.

Harjeet S. Bhabra Associate Dean Research and Research Programs
