MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY DEAN OF RESEARCH & POST-GRADUATE STUDIES
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a research university or also known as one of the RUs. Thus, USM relies
heavily on its research and innovation activities to maintain the RU status. In order to support those activities in
School of Dental Sciences, there should be one excellent research and innovation unit. The office should be
the core of all related activities, in attending the hustle and bustle of grant and research-related undertakings.
Nevertheless, an office will just be a facility without any impact if not for men or women behind it. It is the
individuals that push forward any agenda, and for our school, we are the bearer of USM agenda to progress
further. Lecturers, officers, nurses, support staff, are the one who makes thing happens. Therefore, this 2016
research report is a record of research related activities conducted throughout the year. Some were good
memories, which we shall cherish forever. For the bad experience, we shall learn from it. Keep up the good
work everyone. Thank you for the co-operation given, and the year 2017 shall see the better of us!
Dr. Azlina Ahmad, PhD Deputy Dean (Research & Postgraduate) School of Dental Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia

VISION The School of Dental Sciences, USM is to be the centre of excellence in academia, innovations and
research, and be the catalyst and leader for new knowledge in teaching, learning and research for Malaysian
higher education and the world.
MISSION The School of Dental Sciences, USM is committed to the pursuit of excellence and innovations in academia,
services, research and development of human resources, by fostering a conducive educational environment
and promoting holistic development programmes to meet national needs through exploring new frontiers of
technology, and remain globally competitive to fulfill our community responsibility.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION UNIT
The Research & Innovation Unit holds the responsibility in ensuring that the administration of all research
grants adheres to the university’s or funding body’s guidelines.
We serve to provide information and support the administration and management of research grants held by
researchers.
This unit subsumes some of the activities undertaken by the Research Creativity Management Office in the
main campus and will progressively introduce additional support services for the research community. We
develop and implement effective policies, administrative systems, procedures and controls to ensure that all
activities funded by any agency are conducted in compliance with all the university’s legislated requirements,
agency policies, procedures and requirements specific to a particular research grant. This unit is also
responsible for overseeing ongoing compliance of research being conducted with the research ethics
requirements. Apart from providing information on research and scholarly activity and promoting awareness of
the school’s research and scholarly activities, this unit also engages in the planning and coordinating
professional development activities such as organizing workshops, seminars and conferences, some of which
are as listed in the appendix.
Numerous metrics are being applied as indicators of research performance in the School of Dental Sciences.
This unit periodically monitors research income, research publications and completions statistics of the
research activities which are being carried out through the five research groupings under the Craniofacial
Research Cluster; namely, the Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering, Biomaterial, Oral Health & Oral Diseases,
Craniofacial Medical Imaging and Craniofacial Biology.
Lastly, in supporting and inculcating the culture of continuous and lifelong learning activities, various seminars,
workshops and conferences are being held yearly. These serve to help enrich the researcher’s knowledge in
the management of their research grants as well as increasing the competencies of their laboratory
personnels.

2016
A. Specific Introduction
In School of Dental Sciences, interest in research on Stem cell started in 2003 when the
laboratory staff headed by the founder Dean went to HKL to see the blood bank facilities for
cryo cord blood collection and process procedure. This initiated our postgraduate student to
dwell into stem cell research obtained from bone marrow and cord blood. Following the
discovery of stem cell harvested from tooth in early 2000, PPSG also explored into the same
direction. Our research initially focuses on mesenchymal stem cells harvested from human
dental pulp namely SHED (Stem cell from human exfoliated deciduous teeth) which is from
the milk tooth and DPSCs (Dental pulp stem cells) obtained from permanent tooth. Research
grants looking into the cellular and molecular characterization of stem cells derived from
human exfoliated deciduous teeth was obtained in 2005 followed by few other fundamental
researches. With additional research members, the area of research study increases. The
area of research covers a wide spectrum of interests including gene expression analysis,
determination of cell lineages, immunological responses and others. Researches in the
application of these stem cells in tissue engineering and natural products are also being
looked into.

Justification of Research Groups
The goal of dental stem cells and tissue engineering research is to explore the fundamental
aspects and to develop their potential use in a variety of clinical application in regenerative
dentistry. Dental tissue-engineering approaches combining dental stem cells, biodegradable,
biocompatible scaffolds and exogenous growth factors are being used to devise methods to
reliably regenerate dental tissues including pulp, periodontal tissues, alveolar bone, dentin,
enamel, and salivary glands. Although not currently available, these approaches may one
day be used as biological alternatives to the synthetic materials currently used.

PROJECT TITLE:
A study on formulated mouthwash from herb extract as potential antibacterial, antifungal and remineralizing agents.
RESEARCH GRANT: RUI
INTRODUCTION: Young patients wearing braces and geriatric patients wearing prostheses such as
dentures are prone to having plaque accumulation due to reduction in self cleansing ability of such patients. This mouthwash is formulated to have the antibacterial, antifungal and remineralizing agent suitable to those vulnerable groups. There are numerous mouth rinses available commercially. Most of these mouth rinses are chemically formulated and offer limited usage. None offers all properties inclusive in one product.
The very young and elderly patients may have reduced immunity to opportunistic microflora. And also, exposure to the chemically formulated mouth rinses, may give more harm to them, compared to the normal adult patients. Plants produce chemicals as primary and secondary metabolites which have beneficial long-term. According to World Health Organization (WHO), over three-quarters of the world population rely on plants and their extracts for healthcare needs [6]. Side effects of several allopathic drugs, and development of resistance to currently used drugs for infectious diseases have led to increased emphasis on the use of plants as sources of medicines for a wide variety of human ailments [2–5].
Thus, this study is aimed to formulate a natural herb extract generally for all population but specifically for young patients wearing braces and geriatric patients wearing dentures. Thus, this study is aimed to formulate a natural herb extract specifically for young patients wearing braces and geriatric patients wearing dentures and at the same time it will be beneficial to the whole population in general.
OBJECTIVES GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
To formulate a mouth wash from natural product and investigate the properties of herb extract for use in young and geriatric patients
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: 1. To formulate optimum herb extract to be used as a mouthwash 2. To test the effectiveness of formulated herb extracts against Porphyromonas
gingivalis, Streptococcus mutan, Lactobacilli and Actinomyces israelis 3. To test the effectiveness of herb extracts against Candida albicans
86
4. To test the presence of calcium and phosphate ions in herb extracts as a mineralizing agents
5. To test cytotoxicity of the formulated herb products
RESEARCH QUESTION: 1. What is the optimum formulation of herb extract effective to reduce oral plaque
microorganism for use in young and geriatric patients? 2. Is the herb extract effective for use in young and geriatric patients against P.
gingivalis, S. mutan, Lactobacilli and A. sanguis? 3. Is the herb extract effective against C. albicans? 4. Does the herb product contain calcium and phosphate ions? 5. Is the herb product safe to be used in human being?

A. INTRODUCTION
Craniofacial imaging research is highly influenced by the introduction of new imaging
technology that has been making progress throughout the year. The research in this area will
enable us to understand and organize new information derived from the imaging techniques.
Such information could now be obtained clearer, faster and conveniently available to the
others who involved in the works of craniofacial imaging.
The aim of cranio-maxillofacial surgery is craniofacial reconstruction of craniofacial defect or
deformity. It is a complicated and risky endeavor involving intricate procedures that demand
the skills and experience of cranio-maxillofacial surgeons.

WORKSHOP REPORT:
A HALF DAY TALK: V3 BLOTTING WORKFLOW (RESULT IN HALF TIME OR LESS)
Introduction Western blotting was introduced by Towbin, et al. in 1979 and it is a very popular technique used by protein researchers worldwide. It uses antibody-antigen based interaction to identify the presence of targeted proteins from a heterogeneous mixture of proteins in a sample. Western blots can also be used to evaluate the amount of protein expression. There are several steps leading up to the culmination of western analysis and it is important to ensure that each step is performed optimally and checked before proceeding to the next. With the introduction of the V3 western workflow, the steps can now performed quicker and more efficiently. The V3 workflow allows researchers to quickly check electrophoresis and blot transfer quality and obtain reliable western blotting results, updating traditional blotting techniques with innovative tools.
Objective
In this seminar, we will discuss: 1. How western analysis is usually performed. 2. How it can now be done faster and better by using the V3 Western Workflow.

PROJECT TITLE: A study on formulated mouthwash from herb extract as potential antibacterial, antifungal and remineralizing agents. RESEARCH GRANT: RUI INTRODUCTION: Young patients wearing braces and geriatric patients wearing prostheses such as dentures are prone to having plaque accumulation due to reduction in self cleansing ability of such patients.
OBJECTIVES GENERAL OBJECTIVES: To formulate a mouth wash from natural product and investigate the properties of herb extract for use in young and geriatric patients SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. To formulate optimum herb extract to be used as a mouthwash 2. To test the effectiveness of formulated herb extracts against Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus
mutan, Lactobacilli and Actinomyces israelis 3. To test the effectiveness of herb extracts against Candida albicans 4. To test the presence of calcium and phosphate ions in herb extracts as a mineralizing agents 5. To test cytotoxicity of the formulated herb products
RESEARCH QUESTION:
1. What is the optimum formulation of herb extract effective to reduce oral plaque microorganism for use in young and geriatric patients?

The customer satisfaction feedback survey have shown that this seminar gives excellent (67%) and good (44%) impact on them. However there are few suggestions / comments given by the participants to enhance this seminar in the future :
Keep the good work. Tq 2. Very nice, thank you. 3. Congratulation for the conference. Good luck for next conference. Tq 4. The vaccinate symposium, there must be a balance presenter to justify whether it is local / not. The
panel should be present to the information not to be misleading. 5. Thank you for arranging this conference. More national and particularly one international conference a
year is requested. 6. It was good experience and I will like to attend again. 7. It would be much better if tables are provided for meals. 8. It was a very inspiring conference especially when speakers invited are from some other field but it still
feels very relatable. 9. Refreshments were alright but a bit too sweet. Overall very happy with this conference. Keep inviting
interesting speakers. Hope to see more exhibitions in the future. 10. Thanks!! 11. Food served should be simple and easy to be taken. 12. It was such a great program and beneficial to all participants. 13. 4 minutes is not enough for oral presentation. 14. Need more time allocation for the presenter (oral) 8 minutes doesn't seem to be enough, 10 -12
minutes perhaps will allow, more relax and free session. 15. Tahniah atas kejayaan menjayakan NCHMS. Selamat maju jaya. TQ. 16. Perbanyakkan perbincangan isu-isu semasa seperti isu vaksin. 17. Tingkatkan promosi untuk meningkatkan bilangan penyertaan. 18. Ruangan makan kurang selesa, sedikit payah untuk menjamu selera. 19. Sijil yang diberikan terlalu biasa. Boleh improve bagi sijil yang lagi berkualiti yang ada official stamp. It
is much nicer. Terima kasih.
