In line with the Research University status, USM is continuing its

quest to be a significant global player in research, innovation,

publication and teaching. Thus, the School of Dental Sciences

through its Research & Innovation Unit has endlessly taken

various initiatives and formulated strategies for the advancement

of the school’s research agenda. Even with the limited funding

offered and obtained, diligently, our researchers have

successfully strived through the years supporting the research

activities of our postgraduate students.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY DEAN OF RESEARCH & POST-GRADUATE STUDIES

Assalaamu’alaikum and Warm Greetings

The primary objective of the activities, I believe, is to tackle the focal challenges facing our

society, economy, and the environment. Furthermore, apart from contributing to the applied

science agenda, some fundamental research activities are up and running because it is still

deemed the critical aspect of research communities.

However, this coming year, 2018, besides the apparent fact of the need to apply for

research funding, maybe we should also think about the returns on investment (social or

otherwise) and pursue collaborative works with other universities. These shall be part of the

research culture in our School of Dental Sciences in moving its research agenda forward.

Through the Research & Innovation Unit, our researchers have access to a wide range of

development programs, as well as benefit from dedicated support in funding applications and

management of grants. We also had attempted to strengthen the laboratories management.

This yearly report aims to disseminate information on all research related activities which have

been conducted and funding obtained throughout the year 2017 to our existing and potential

researchers, stakeholder, and the community at large.

With that, I thank you for the cooperation given, and may the year 2018 be a great one for us!


RESEARCH & INNOVATION UNIT

The Research & Innovation Unit continues to hold the responsibility in ensuring that the

administration of all research grants adheres to the university’s or funding body’s guidelines. We

provide the necessary information and supports the administration and management of research

grants held by researchers.

The Office of Research & Innovation through its continuous assistance given to the various

quality research and education conducted in the School of Dental Sciences helps to support this

university in advancing knowledge and learning for the nation and humanity.

Because money generation has become one of the targeted KPIs for this school, this office via the

on-going establishment of its small business unit, will help to seek out commercial applications for

the products, services and technology the research produces.

Being part of a Research University, this office will strive to actively contribute to the

generation and dissemination of knowledge which aims to enhance the nations’s quality of life. The

Office of the Deputy Dean of Research, Postgraduate and Linkages also engages in providing

linkages to the communities at large by disseminating knowledge & information and the transfer of

technology and skills, all being done for the development and enhancement of the nation. It is also

our hope to see researchers translating their research which could benefit the bottom billion society

in the future.

This yearly report by the Research & Innovation Unit aims to disseminate information to

existing and potential researchers, stakeholders and the community at large. By exploring this 2017

Annual Report, one will be enlightened with current information on the schools’ research activities,

expertise, infrastructure and services.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR (KPI) The research performance and standing of the school is reflected by its KPI achievement for any particular year. The Secretariat serves to collect, analyse and submit the data collected to the BPI (Institutional Development Institution) – a regulatory entity under USM for the purpose of internal auditing of the school’s yearly performance. Annual Activities Report of Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Research Group 2017

A. Specific Introduction In School of Dental Sciences, interest in research on Stem cell started in 2003 when the

laboratory staff headed by the founder Dean went to HKL to see the blood bank facilities for

cryo cord blood collection and process procedure. This initiated our postgraduate student to

dwell into stem cell research obtained from bone marrow and cord blood. Following the

discovery of stem cell harvested from tooth in early 2000, PPSG also explored into the same

direction. Our research initially focuses on mesenchymal stem cells harvested from human


dental pulp namely SHED (Stem cell from human exfoliated deciduous teeth) which is from the

milk tooth and DPSCs (Dental pulp stem cells) obtained from permanent tooth. Research

grants looking into the cellular and molecular characterization of stem cells derived from human

exfoliated deciduous teeth was obtained in 2005 followed by few other fundamental

researches. With additional research members, the area of research study increases. The area

of research covers a wide spectrum of interests including gene expression analysis,

determination of cell lineages, immunological responses and others. Researches in the

application of these stem cells in tissue engineering and natural products are also being looked

into.

biocompatible scaffolds and exogenous growth factors are being used to devise methods to reliably regenerate dental tissues including pulp, periodontal tissues, alveolar bone, dentin, enamel, and salivary glands. Although not currently available, these approaches may one day be used as biological alternatives to the synthetic materials currently used.

Feedback

Most of the participants gave satisfaction and excellent to speaker for topic 1 and topic 2. However, only 9% of participants gave feedback to improve for topic 3. The programmed time and date suitability, only 3 % gave poor and 12 % are satisfactory where the rest were good and excellent. Majority of the participants gave good and excellent for the registration process including the suitability of programmed location. According to the customer satisfaction feedback form, many of participants gave good and excellent for the refreshment, rate of the achievement and objectives of the

programmed. Then, only 6 % of participants were satisfied and the rest gave good and excellent for the overall course. Lastly, the majority of the participants hope that we can continue this topic with the new knowledge because it gives a lot of benefits to them according to the comments part of the survey form.

Advance workshop on Real-time RT-PCR: DNA & RNA Analyses

Introduction This workshop is designed for those who interested to further understand real-time polymerase chain reaction experiment in conducting the biomedical science research. Real-time PCR allow precise quantification of specific nucleic acids in a complex mixture even if the starting amount of material is at a very low concentration. The participants will get hands-on experience of RNA and quantification, cDNA synthesis followed by real time RT-PCR. They also will learned about quantitative real-time PCR using DNA as the starting template. This workshop will be concluded with result, analyses and discussion.

SEMINAR ON USM-RIKEN INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR AGEING SCIENCE – AN AWARENESS

INTRO-DUCTION

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) together with the renowned Japanese research institute RIKEN Institute has undertaken the development of a joint institute in its efforts to drive research in the field of ageing science for the past 22 years ie since 2015. This began with the transfer of students to undertake research, until the set up of URICAS which, academics-wise, provide a platform for the expansion of an interesting topic, the ageing science. The ageing process which is caused by various genes as discovered, is a biological cycle that every human needs to face wherein the human bodies will go through changes dictated by time which itself is also part of the biological process. In tandem with ageing, there are other unavoidable disorders such as old age, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and etc. The seminar aims to give a better understanding and awareness to all academics and postgraduate students on the possibility of research collaboration with RIKEN.

OBJECTIVE An awareness on the joint research institute which aims to:

1. produce academic at the post-doctorate level 2. the possibility of choosing the best students in the doctorate studies from all fields to

be roped into the URICAS programme, for them to get funding to be part of the post-doctorate academia

3. give opportunities to students presently undertaking an advanced degree programme to carry out research at RIKEN for three months each year, with the students to be jointly supervised by both USM and RIKEN lecturers

WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPING A MANUSCRIPT FOR COCHRANE SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Introduction This first ever 3-day workshop held is designed to introduce the participants to Cochrane and thereafter help participants to author and publish a Cochrane Review which has an impact value of 6.20. Hence this workshop is specifically designed for scientists, researchers, academicians, post-graduate students and others who need and/or wish to publish good scientific reviews. The workshop consisted of a mixture of presentations and small group activities giving the participants the opportunity to develop and refine their own protocols. The workshop also covers formulating clinical questions, locating studies, appraising risk of bias and performing a meta-analysis.

Objectives

1) To introduce participants to the Cochrane Collaboration and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

2) To provide skills and knowledge on title registration and protocol preparation for the Cochrane Collaboration

3) To guide participants with potential review title and drafting the review proposal form

4) To provide skills and knowledge on performing a meta-analysis

h. Introduction to REVMAN too fast, difficult to follow. Should be done slower pace, step by step.

a. Hands-on for most part is needed. Just showing on PPtx isn’t enough. Suggest - allow participants to use their own lap tops to follow the instructions from instructor. This would tremendously help in understanding the protocol (referring to Day 2).

b. Fees too expensive for students. Need to lower so that more PGrads could afford to attend.

c. More assistants required during the practical sessions. d. Conduct workshops on regular basis / more often. e. Increase the duration of workshop to avoid cramping of topics

Pengenalan Seminar yang merupakan ulangan dari yang pernah dianjurkan oleh PPSP Ogos lalu diadakan atas permintaan pensyarah-pensyarah PPSG yang tidak dapat menghadirinya atas urusan perkhidmatan yang tidak dapat dielakkan. Dengan kekangan bajet penyelidikan yang dialami oleh IPTA dan keperluan peningkatan KPI melalui penerbitan hasil penyelidikan, semua pensyarah yang tidak memiliki geran penyelidikan digalakkan untuk berusaha mendapatkan geran penyelidikan daripada badan-badan luar USM. Seminar disampaikan oleh pensyarah-pensyarah daripada PPSP dan PPSK yang berpengalaman dalam memperolehi geran-geran daripada badan-badan luar USM. Seminar bertujuan berkongsi pengalaman pensyarah-pensyarah tersebut dan memberi tips kejayaan mereka mendapatkan geran-geran penyelidikan daripada badan-badan luar USM dengan pensyarah-pensyarah PPSG.
