to support the use and the role of innovation as a game-changer in the spirit of Europe 2020 and Innovation Union initiative.

to promote innovation capability and competence within the knowledge triangle - education, R&D and business.

to enhance the coordination of activities and collaboration between different stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem.

to inspire all cities in Europe to select relevant and transferable innovation good practice.

A "City"?

For the purpose of this award:

An urban area, excluding metropolitan areas, larger urban zones and conurbations, understood as an administrative unit governed by a

city council or another form of democratically elected body

From:

•EU Member States •Associated Countries to the FP7

Israel, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Faroe Islands.

A population of 100,000 or more

In countries where there is no city with more than 100,000 inhabitants, the largest city is eligible to apply.

A complete application must be submitted.

The achievements for which the city applies must relate to an on-going initiative started after 1st January 2010.

The achievements have not been previously awarded with a monetary prize by an EU institution.

Cities following a comprehensive strategy:

Innovative - in terms of concepts, processes and tools

Inspiring – aim of attracting talent, funding, investment

Integrated – demonstrating links with the goals of the Europe 2020

Interactive - building a community for innovation

The PRIZE

Need to prove future commitment to scale up the initiative

A prize of EUR 500 000

to support the city efforts to expand its successful on-going initiative and in leveraging relevant achievements in the future

Reminder:You must describe the planned use of this monetary

prize in your application!



Evaluation

Before evaluation: Commission pre-screening of all received applications (eligibility check)

Evaluation: carried out by the Commission with independent experts (individual reading then consensus meeting)

Hearings might be organised only for applications

sufficiently high in the ranking

Awarding Ceremony

Brussels – 10/11 March 2014

The selected winner and the two runner-ups will be invited

A short video will explain the winning initiative for the European Capital of Innovation Award – iCapital.

More information about the video production to all shortlisted contestants in January 2013.
