Reprogramming the Mind for a Stress-free Life

1. Introduction

Living in today’s fast-paced and fast-changing world comes with a heavy price tag—constant

stress. Stress due to heavy workload and cut-throat competition in the workplace; stress due to

media overload, where the compulsion to stay connected and informed, to stay ‘on top of

things’, poses a threat to sanity; stress due to interpersonal intolerance and fraught

relationships; stress due to poor nutrition and declining health; and so many other causes.

Never were maladies such as headaches, stomach problems, muscular cramps, palpitations and

hair loss as common as they are today – all of them inevitable consequences of living under

constant stress. Stress is the enemy within—the killer we are living with!

2. What is Stress?

Stress is the physical and mental response to a real or imagined threat, as a result of either

internal or external stressors .

Internal stressors include-

Negative thoughts accompanied by false beliefs or irrational thinking

Inability to accept present situations

Fostering a negative attitude towards an undesirable event

External stressors include-

Physical pain or discomfort

Overwhelming life situations such as death of a loved one or breaking of ties.

Setbacks in profession, vocation or education.

3. Dealing with Stress

In the words of William James, “Our biggest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one

thought over another”. For instance, if four different people with different mindsets are put in

the same undesirable situation, like being passes over for a job promotion, you would get four

different reactions. One might take it in his stride and bide his time, another might start looking

for another job where his skills and talents would be appreciated, the third might develop anger

issues, while the fourth might sink into apathy or depression.

In other words, the stress we experience is a function of our own thought processes —the way

WE react to situations. And so, the solution to stress lies not so much in removing the stressors

from our lives, but in removing the negativity WE associate with them—in controlling the way

OUR brain responds to various life situations.

While there are a number of effective techniques for fast track management of daily stress and

a balanced state of heart, body and mind such as medications, FMT (functional manual

therapy), Spinal decompression therapy, Reiki and a ‘detox’ diet, the newest stress

management technique is ALPHA TRAINING USING BIOFEEDBACK, which revolves around the

concept of training our minds to control its response to stressful situations. And all this in a way

that can be monitored on your computer screen, so that you know you are ‘getting it right’

rather than groping in the dark!

4. BIOFEEDBACK at PHYWorld

Scientific research reveals four kinds of brain wave frequencies—beta, alpha, theta and delta,

each associated with a different state of consciousness. We train our clients to shift their

energy level from beta (fully awake state) to alpha (deeply relaxed or composed state), and

help them to maintain this state as long as desired through graphs or feedback (visual or

auditory) on the computer.

The benefits of this technique are numerous, including:

1. Better focus

2. Better concentration

3. Improved reaction time

4. Increased power

5. Improved mind and body balance

6. Quick rehab from pain

Alpha Training gives us an outlet for the suppressed energies generated by stress, and thus,

tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body. Hence, Stress is an important dragon to

slay - or at least tame - in your life because a diamond is just a piece of charcoal that

handled stress extremely well.
