Presidents Report

Welcome to the Clubs 114th Annual General Meeting and 1998 Annual Report.

I am very pleased to present this Report on what has been a exceptionally pleasing, enjoyable and rewarding year. 1998 has been arguably the most successful season in the Club's long and proud history. The years significant achievements are detailed in this report and will be outlined to members at the Annual General Meeting.

Success of the nature the Club experienced is of course something that doesn't come by chance. It comes about through hard work, dedication, team work, persistence and great personal commitment by many people.

It is a difficult ask to thank sufficiently all those who have contributed to the Club over the 1998 season. Now comprising six football teams, eleven netball teams and an Auslcick Program, the Club has grown quickly over recent years - now requiring many people to ensure it runs successfully and continues to improve and progress.

In very general terms, thanks to: • Our many members, supporters and people of the Yinnar community who continue to

attend matches, show support and lend a hand, even on the most bleak of days • The many players who have taken to the netball court or football field to ensure the

carriage of both these great games over time • Our Sponsors headed by Premier Sponsor Yinnar Community Hotel Co-Operative

who have all once again shown magnificent support • The Committee who have worked tirelessly to lead and manage the Club over the

course of the season • The Coaching team, both junior and senior football and netball panels • Auskick parents and helpers • Team Managers and the many support personnel who make it possible for the teams

to get on the track each week • The local media, particularly Gary Howe and Jason Shields of the Latrobe Valley

Express and Tony Osler of 3GG for their willingness to publicise Club events and activities

• The Victorian Football Development Foundation and Victorian Football League through the very helpful and supportive Ray Byrne, Roger Geron and Peter Francis

• The Victorian Country Football League and Latrobe Valley Regional Manager Danny Answerth

• The Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management who provide high standard facilities for all members, players and supporters to enjoy

• Mid Gippsland Football League Executive, and in particular, Secretary Rod Lucas • Our local Churchill & Boolarra Police who take a very proactive role to Policing in

the community and with whom the Club enjoys a positive relationship

I f I have missed anyone, apologies. It is a difficult task to ensure that the vast number of people deserving recognition are mentioned.

The Club continued to improve finances, once again reporting a profit for the season. The Club must finish each season in the black if we are to continue to improve the facilities for our members, players, supporters and the community. For those that believe the Shire or other organisation provides facilities such as netball courts, social rooms and ground lighting - think again.

Page 18: Report to Members 1998€¦ · Yinnar Football & Netball Club Inc. Report to Members 1998 - our 114th year 2 It is the Clubs Aim to 1. Maximise recreation and leisure opportunities

Presidents Report, continued

The responsibility of finding the funds to establish, maintain and improve such facilities lies with this Club and the Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, no one else. Hence the need to continue to trade profitability for the future benefit of players, members and supporters to ensure the stability of Club finances and the prudent management of Members funds.

While there were advancements in many areas of the Club over the season, there are of course some areas that can be improved. Off field, the Club Committee is more determined than ever to ensure the level of success experienced in 1998 comes our way far more frequently. We are already planning for the 1999 season (and beyond), and give commitment that all areas of Club operations will be reviewed and opportunities for improvement explored and where appropriate pursued. We must do this to keep ahead of our competitors and make the Club a place that remains attractive to our players, members, supporters and the community. All involved with this Club are urged to put forward ideas, suggestions on how this may be achieved, and as I have stated, the Committee does not have a monopoly on ideas!

There is drive to retain all involved in the Club in 1998 for 1999, and to add to our stocks on and off the field to ensure the required progress. For those that may believe there may be greener pastures elsewhere, or that there may not be a place for them - I would suggest that there are many opportunities for all to be involved in some capacity - be it on or off the field.

Some very good news was received at the completion of the season with Col Metcalf being named the Latrobe Valley / Gippsland Coaches Association 'Coach of the Year'. The purpose of the award is: 1. To recognise the significant contribution of Coaches to the conduct and development

of Australian Football in Victoria 2. To recognise the achievements of Coaches who give quality service to the game in

that they: • display strength of character in the role of coaching • foster enthusiasm for, interest in, and an excellent attitude to participation in

football • give quality value to the goals and purposes of Club and League football

This sums up Col's approach to football and is well earned recognition of a top quality coach and person. Well done to Col.

I must pay special thanks to Leanne and Jamie for tolerating a fairly demanding year and putting up with a touch more than what could be considered fair.

The 1999 season will again present a number of challenges which will be met with enthusiasm and commitment by the Committee and all involved with this Club. At the 1997 Presentation Ball, I gave a commitment on behalf of the Committee that we would work to improve how we operate as a Club, and to take the next step. I would hope you believe that commitment has been met.

Presidents Report, continued

This year, again on behalf of the Committee, I give the commitment to all members that 1998 wasn't an aberration, a fluke or just luck, that the success of this season will continue and that 1998 definitely will not be a one in 25 year event. We will strive to continue to improve across all areas of the Club, and to build on the considerable strengths of the people that are the Club and to retain the very strong community and family focus that is so critical to our success and our future.

I join you in looking forward to meeting these challenges and to another successful, progressive and enjoyable season in 1999. I will be nominating for the same position in 1999, and really do feel honoured to be part of the Club that has served the Yinnar and district community now for 114 years.

Go Pies!

'The Pride & The Glory' Written & presented by Geoff Bennett to the Club Presentation Ball, Friday 9 October.

The grand final, the honour, the pride and the glee Not Yinnar's since that day back in 1973

Ironically the Bulldogs ran out of the docks To be met by big Webby and Porter and Fox

Kornacki the Coach, Daffy Williams, Keith Lord Bob Bremner, Crabs Rennie Wasn't long til they scored

So at Churchill that day, it was hot, it was fast But the boys from Yinnar didn't let a chance pass They didn't just win - they beat'em hands down

And brought back the Trophy to the Valley's Top Town.

Now one score and five And a team Yinnar sent

To bring back the flags that the other teams lent And so it began with a fervour, without fear 'Cause Yinnar had decided '98 was the year

With a top coach named Metty who was born to the game This team of young men could aspire to fame So into the season they ran and they played

No hearts without courage, their intentions displayed With a near perfect score card

The big day came round The Flag to be determined at the Vary St Ground

The Reserves led by Roly came back from the brink The Netballers too, a premiership drink

Then the team led by Winner burst onto the field No doubt in their eyes, the trophy they'd yield Determined and focused, the best in the land

And so it began - the great final grand

The rest is of course history A victory at last

And Yinnar has now shaken the monkey of the past I'd now like to run through the premiership names

And I don't know if you've noticed They all end with the sound of an E, 0 or A

There's Grassy and Spermy, Youngy and Damo Clarky and Winner, Bobby and Leo

Chippa and Foxy, Decker and Webby Jumbo and Wilo, Bowy and Metty

Darcy and Sharpy, Ashley and Dasha Mona and Holty, Robbo and Shanna

Not to forget the field doctors, thanks Deano, Hammer, Whitey and their gear And the magnificent runner Peter Lino, what a fantastic year.

He's agile, he's witty and quick with the tongue And no-one would disagree he can turn serious to fun.

No players make the team Though we all must remember

That without support and backing the whole plan would be lacking

Our thanks to the families, girlfriends and wives For the times that the lads have not been in their lives

The Coaches, Selectors, Trainers, the runners and the workers The Sponsors, the Supporters, the cooks and bar persons

And to all the stayers in years now forgotten Thank you for sticking with it, even when we were on the bottom

In closing we thank the great president Quigs He spent more time at the ground than he did at his digs Perhaps given time and another premiership celebration We could talk the great organiser into running the nation

NOW - let's party tonight, you've all got the knack And look forward to next year

99 - BACK TO BACK

Labor for McMillan Authorised by Noela Amos,

McMillan 'key seat' By MEGAN NEL THE voting trend in McMillan will be a key indicator of who will win government a t the 3 October federal election, according to a senior figure in the Labor Party.

Shadow Education and Youth Af- f ah l Minister Mark Latham, cam- paigning here on Friday, said if Labor could not win McMillan, it would not win nationally.

Both Mr Latham and Labor can- didate for McMillan Christian Zahra played down the decision by former ALP member Barry Cunningham to stand and what effect that would have on Labor's chances of winning the seat.

However, a key union official labelled Mr Cunningham's move, which could divide ALP voters' loyalties, as a "treacherous act".

In other developments: • McMillan has attracted its

largest field of candidates in years, with 11 from nine parties;

• the Australian Shooters Party won top spot on the ballot paper, with Mr Cunningham securing second spot;

• Liberal and Labor did not fare well in Friday's ballot draw, with incumbent Russell Broadbent placed seventh and Mr Zahra last (although the latter could benefit from a reverse donkey vote);

• Shadow Treasurer Gareth Evans is in the electorate today, meeting with power industry chief executives, Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer is here tomorrow and Opposition Leader Kim Beasley is expected on Wednesday.

Mr Latham said McMillan was will have government in the next "very important" to the ALP, both hree years. Leo soaks up Yinnar's win YINNAR coach Col Metcalf knew exactly what the Yinnar Football and Netball Club meant to one of its moat loved characters Leo Knowles when his name was called up to receive the coach's premiership medal on Saturday afternoon.

In a moving gesture, Metcalf made sure that Knowles was a part of the grand final success by requesting that the Mid Gippsland league present his medallion to Knowles after the veteran on-baller had been forced to pull out of the match with a hamstring injury.

At 38, Knowles had never played in a senior premiership and knew that 1998 could have been his last chance. But, true to character, Knowles brushed aside his own personal disappointment of missing Saturday's grand final and stood proudly on the podium with Metcalfe premiership medal in hand.

He pumped his arms in the sky, proud of what his team mates had achieved and brought cheers from the Yinnar supporters that were as loud as those saved for the raising of the premiership cup. Everyone at the ground knew that Knowles had been as much a part of the win as the 21 players who had just beaten Newborough by 29 points. After the match, Metcalf again spoke of Knowles in his address to the players, outlining just how much winnings grand final had meant to him. At the end of i t all, there was barely a dry eye in the room.
