Qualitative Data Regarding Alcohol Use at FEW

• Quote of a senior enlisted member from a recent email discussion of planned celebration:

“I don’t know what the rest of the Wing personnel do, but in [my shop] the promotees buy until we’ve had our fill, and then they buy more. I like this tradition and think we should continue this time honored tradition…where would we be if we let tradition slide by the wayside…”

Recommendation(s):• Unit-run training, “footstomping”,

and consistency of culture throughout leadership levels

• Advanced Workshop for commanders and supervisors

• Life Skills briefings targeting times of greater risk- e.g. ”101 Critical Days of Winter”

• Continued data monitoring

Issue/Topic:

• Focused study of alcohol and violence at FE Warren compared to other bases

Background / discussion:

• DUI, UA drinking, and suicide attempt rates higher than AF overall, worse in winter months

• Demographics and attitudes about drinking likely key factors

Status:

• Life Skills annual briefings conducted in February and June, total 58% base population; target late fall and during winter months

• Materials or guidance for Alcohol and Violence educational or mentoring available from Life Skills for unit use
