T he Insurance Brokers AssociationofB.C.offers the courses and tools you’ll need to start your career in insurance, earn a designation and advance

in your chosen area of specialization. Getting started

Both the Fundamentals of Insurance and CAIB 1 (Canadian Accredited Insur-ance Broker) courses introduce students to the basic terminology, features of personal insurance lines and regulatory requirements that a Level 1 salesperson needs for an entry-level position in a brokerage.

To assist in your job search IBABC has a Job Board (visit www.ibabc.org) where you can pursue job listings posted by employ-ers and post your availability for potential IBABC-member employers to see.

Moving up the licensing ladderA Level 2 general insurance agent is

not restricted to where he or she can work and is not prohibited from signing contracts of insurance. The CAIB 2 and CAIB 3 courses, which cover commer-cial lines of insurance, are among the options for meeting Level 2 education requirements.

The province’s licensing and man-datory education requirements focus on the technical aspects of insurance products and the broker’s duties of care to customers, but brokers’ customer service and interpersonal skills are also vitally important to their suc-cess. The New Broker Essential Skills CertificateProgrambuildsonthecoreCAIB courses with additional topics on the technical aspects of insurance and includes training on the “soft skills”

specifictotheneedsofabrokerage.Though the program is designed for licenseesintheirfirstfouryearsofwork in the industry, the courses add depth to any licensee’s understand-ing and the customer service topics are especially helpful to those with no prior experience in customer service or businessoffices.Manyleadingbrokerstoday attribute much of their success to having had a mentor and the NBES program includes a mentoring compo-nent. With the help of their mentors, students start with the foundation courses and then choose a specializa-tion in personal or commercial insur-

modules, licensees qualify for the CAIB designation.

The CAIB designation is well recog-nized across Canada and it immediately signals to employers and clients that you are a committed insurance professional. Completing the CAIB designation can alsobeajumping-offpointforotherdesignations or degree programs.

For example, students may follow theirCAIBdesignationwithaCPIB(CanadianProfessionalInsuranceBroker) designation. This designation allows candidates to combine their advanced knowledge on the techni-cal aspects of insurance with elective courses in accounting, administration and management taken at an accred-ited college or university.

Ways to studyThe Fundamentals of Insurance can

be done either as a self-study course or in a week-long immersion class. Im-mersion classes take place in Vancouver andarealldayforfivedayswithexamswrittenonthefinaldayofclass.StudentswholiveintheLowerMain-

land and who choose self-study or who need to rewrite the exam can do so at the IBABCofficeinVancouverfromMondayto Friday at 8:45 am, 11:15 am and 1:45 pm. Students who live outside the Lower Mainlandcanarrangetotaketheonlineexam at any time in their own communi-ty with the assistance of a pre-arranged proctor. Students can register online at www.ibabc.org.

The CAIB program can be completed either by self-study, immersion or online courses. Self-study can be started at any time as long as you choose an exam date within one calendar year. The CAIB immersion classes are available for CAIB 2 to 4 and begin one week prior to the exam date, with the exam on the follow-ing Wednesday. The online courses are 12 weeks long and are available for CAIB 1 to 4.

Here is your IBABC Edu-cation Calendar for 2013,whichfeaturesinformation on our licensing courses and extensive listings of

our continuing education (CE) semi-nars for the year. As usual, we have lots of new seminar topics available to help keep you well informed and accredited. Highlights of these include: Front Line Underwriting – Small to Mid-market Manufacturing Risks; Not-so-Obvious Business Interruption Risks and Cover-age Solutions; Legislation for Brokers and a Leadership Skills Workshop for Level3licensees.And,fortheveryfirsttime, we’re partnering with ICBC to offeranAutoplan Claims seminar in the fall that, thanks to their sponsorship, willbeofferedataspecialdiscountedprice. To register for any of our educa-tion programs, please be sure to visit the “Careers & Education” section of our website at www.ibabc.org.

In the past year, we’ve been busy adding to and improving our broker education programs through the use of technology. Three major developments in this area have included a re-launch of our online CAIB courses, creating our 25th HyperArticle™, and adding social media to our methods of connecting with members and students.

To expand upon the learning resourc-es available in our online CAIB courses, we re-released them in July as Online CAIB Exam Preparation courses. In addi-tion to the pre-recorded lecture modules we’vebeenofferingformanyyears, thesecourses now include study-tip videos, supplemental study materials, discus-sion forums, direct access to a tutor for questions and problem solving, and new practice exams. The practice exams are fullyautomated, mimicthefinalexamexperience and provide on-the-spot grade results. This helps our students get more comfortable with taking – and succeeding in – the real CAIB examina-tions. And, even more amazing than this, we only charge $49 (members) and $99 (non-members) per student for 12 weeks’ access to these online programs! Pleasegoto www.ibabc.org > Careers & Education > Licensing & Designations > OnlineLearningCentreformoreinfor-mation and to register.

As of this month, our HyperArticles program – BC Broker magazine articles repurposed as mini CE courses – turns

four years old. And, this edition of the magazine contains our 25th HyperArti-cle. All along, it has been our vision that the HyperArticles program would not just be an online collection of interest-ing and convenient CE courses but also a useful library of reference articles and supplemental materials for everyday bro-ker needs. With over two-dozen articles now in the library, and more being added all the time, that vision has come to be. If you haven’t heard about or looked at HyperArticles for your CE and general reference requirements yet, do yourself a huge favour and check them out on our website by following the Careers & Education > Continuing Education > Hy-perArticlesmenulinks.Atonly$69peryear (IBABC members only, with group discounts available) for open access to all the articles, they’re an absolute bargain.

For our social media presence, as of late2012theIBABCEducationDepart-ment has a dedicated account and page on LinkedIn, the business networking website. Here we’ve placed information regarding our programs and direct links to the various education pages on our website. We have also struck up a Twit-ter account (@ibabcEdu) and are now tweeting information about up-coming educationevents, tidbitsonhowtofindour new seminar schedules, highlights about events as they happen, and more. Following us on Twitter is a fast and easywaytofindoutabouttheeducationprograms we’re running in your area. In2012,wecelebratedthefactthat

we saw many new brokers participating in our CE seminars, the return of some familiar faces that we hadn’t seen in a while, and an overall increase in num-bers. Thank you to all those who partici-pated! I like to think that this high level ofparticipationinourprogramsreflectsthe fact that we continually strive to offersolid, relevanttopicswhilecyclingnew ones in to keep things fresh. We’re also constantly working to improve our course delivery methods through a user-friendly, no-nonsense application of online learning technologies, including learning management systems and web broadcasting. For the near and more distant future, we have plans to continue on with such innovation, some of which will be launched later this year. For announcements on more great things to come, please keep an eye on this magazine section and www.ibabc.org, and be sure to follow us on Twitter. See you online and in the classroom!
