NEK SERIES. No. 38.
OST organizations find it to their advantage to review their
progress at the end of each year to see if they have fulfilled
sll the expectations with whioh they set out at the beginning,
and, st the same time to consider the steps needful to be
taken in the future. Our review of 1898 presents many
distinctive features —the most notable of whish to ue, as a trading
organisation, sze the increase of competition and the unblushing
manner in which inferior aml adulterated goods are sold ss first-rste
and genuine in quality. Convictions for selling short weight, for
adulteration, snd other forms of swindling the public, aze certainly
not so numerous locally as they would be, were proper attention given
by those responsible for the law being put into force against these
practices. There exists in respect to such matters considerable
ignorance, which is greatly to be regretted, but there is much inexcus-
able apathy also. With laudable intentions our Educational Com-
mittee snd Women's Guild recently engaged Miss Ravenhill to give
a lecture on "The Food of the People. " The lecture wss most
instructive, but the audience was not half as large ss it ought to
have been. The lecturer's disclosures respecting the contamination
and adulteration of milk, snd the curing or preserving of butter,
cream, snd meat, were startling, snd yet not in tbe least exaggerated.
The transmission to human beings of disease by bad meat and by
milk from unclean and unhealthy cows is full of menace to the public
health. Those best competent to pass an opinion, ssy it is questionable
if in any other town there is greater disregard of sanitary regulations
in respect to the way cows are kept and milk is produced snd sold than
in Lincoln. The growing extent to whish milk, butter, cream, bacon,
hams, tongues, and fish are treated by borscie acid, snd the injury
to digestion caused by this nearly tasteless substance which accomp-
lishes the "mild cure, " were ably snd lucidly treated by the
lecturer. The highest authorities on hygiene, she stated, are a~edthat the said whish prevents meat decomposing, prevents it when
eaten kom digesting. One grain of comfort that we as co-operators
have is, that no "preservative, " as the acid is termed, is used in
the butter factories of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, whence
we draw the bulk of our supplies of creameries butter. And further,
there is an increasing demand among our members yearly, for bacon
and hams of our own curing, s demand which will doubtless tend to
grow as people realize what the words "mild cured" really mean.
The Butchery Committee have found. , in respect to this branch of
business, that supply has created demand, for they have not yet
been able to cope with the demand for hams the whole year through.
Now that we have extended our Farming Department by adding 150acres, it may be possible to deal with ham aud bacon curing snd
storage, in s way not open, snd to an extent not possible at the Central
Butchery Department, with its contracted accommodation for this
purpose. Whether this work csn be undertaken direst at one ofthe farms where the pigs are fed, will doubffess engage the attention
of the Farm Committee. The ancient barn at Gregg Hafi Farm, if itcould be rendered ratproof, affords room for salting, drying, and
storage, not st present fully utilized for any purpose. This woald be
a natural outgrowth from pig-keeping snd one which could not very
well zesult in loss, with ordinarily careful management.
t
The recent purchase of s small farmstead snd Ass acres of land near
the Srores, at Welbourn, while it is the consummation of a series ofefforts in this direction extending over several years, may possibly have
some bearing upon the question of an improved milk, cream, butter,
and bacon supply, on co-operative lines. It has long been mooted
that houses for the local employees should be built, but in respect to
the disposal of the rest of the land nothing is certain snd nothing csn
be decided at present, as the Society does not obtain possession until
Lady-day. By the most public-spirited of the local members it,
hss often been advanced that their interests would. be served by theestablishment of a small creamezy. We suggest they form a eo-opera-
tive creamery society of their own, and take the pmfits or losses of
such an undertaking. The management would be an excellent train-
ing for the most enterprising and intelligent of the working-class,
who sre quite ss capable as the worlnng class in Lincoln were thirty
years ago when the Stores started, and beMdes they possess capital,
which our pioneers lacked. The Welbourn Branch hss created
capital for them. Holding money in our Society ss local members do,
to the extent of thousands of pounds, it cannot be said that lack of
capital deters them from starting a creamery if they have any faith in
themselves and are persuaded it would be to their advantage, as
many claim it would. If sn opening could be found for the by-pro-
ducts either by pig-feediug as is usual, or. otherwise, and. members
would stringently bind themselves to take sll their milk to a creamery,
there is no reason why one should not pay. The Derby Co-operative
Society is now enlarging its Creamery which has been working
at a good profit for several years. Any reliable information iherefore
the Welbourn members might want, could be obtained from a tzust-
worthy source, and the methods of working at Derby could be
inspected by s deputation, if necessary, before sny steps to start a
Creamery were taken. The position of the Derby Society is quite
difi'erent to that of Lincoln. Derby being the centre of a dairying
district, milk is supplied to the Society's Creamery direct by the
farmers in the immediate vicinity, a thing not possible at Lincoln.
Undoubtedly one of the most important departures the Society
has ever made was the Building of the new Stores, opened at Market
Rasen last March. No other course however was possible. There
had been great dilficulty in oonducting trade in the old premises, the
lease of which had nearly expired, and they were dilapidated snd
overrun with vermin. The stocks naturally sufi'ezed thereby, snd a
re-valuation on removal zesulted in a temporary diminution of profit.
Convenient shops and more varied stocks have brought increased
trade and membership, and there appears now to be no doubt that
ultimately Market Bssen will become one of the best of the Society's
Branches, although wages being low in the district the purchasing
power 'of the members is not great.
The quidsuavs within the Society and out of it who were fond of
stating, when the new High Street Branch or Sub-Central was
opened that it wss and would always be a "white elephant, "sre doubt-
less by now taking to heart the advice given by Puuck, "never prophecy
unless you know. " The Sub-Central has now been open exactly fom
years, the sales for the first quarter were 62,507, whereas for last
quarter they reached 63,602. The increase in the receipts has been
constant, but the rate of increase in 1898 hss been greater than
previously; the last quazter of the year the receipts were not only
6593 over the preceding quarter, but they were 6619 in excess of the
corresponding quarter of 1897, when prices of bread and fiour ruled
mush higher. And while this is so the pro6ts have all along been
over the average, s fact whish speaks well for the careful
management of Mr. Brummitt and the competence and atten-
tion of the staff. When the Sub-Central wss opened, it wss
stated publicly by the Committee that the Society had, for once,
built in anticipation of the requirements of ten years kom that time.
Since then John O'Gaunt's hss been covered with houses, for many
of whish the Society hss found the purchase-money. Other new
streets leadiug out of High Street have been built, and. we are
within measurable distance of the time when the Corporation,
by acquiring the Tramwsys, and cheapening, extending and improv-
ing the accommodation, will oause further developments of building
in this direction, sll of which cannot fail to increase the value of thefreehold of the Sub-Central and extend its trade. Meanwhile, some
of ouz pmdueBve departments have found s home st the baolr of the
property, and there is ample room for others yet to be added, ss theywill inevitably be crowded out in the course of time kom the CentralStores, Silvez Street. Moreover, if ever the Society Resides to set
up s Goods Forwarding Department, such ss some think, even now,
to be necessary, as sn adjunct of a Central Warehouse, the rearof the Bub-Central affords a site for it, convenient of access by roadfor goods going out aud within easy reach for goods coming in by raiL
During last year extensions Iong-needed at tne HozucsstleBranch were made, snd similar work is in prospect st Slesford, wherea very considerable amount of capital needs expending to bring the
LINCOLN CO-OPERttt TIVE QUARTERLY RECORD 9
premises up to the t'ull trade requirements of the presen'. and prospec-tive membership. It is very difflcult, however, for a Committee toimtiate and undertake work oi' this character with zest aud satisfactionif continually assailed with hostile criticism froin bodies of membezs
wlio, from want of knowing better, confound capital with profit sndsapiently advocate that money expended on capital account shouhl beused to pay iucreased dividends. R is ignorance ouly that impedesco-operation sud thereby withholds from labour its surest, eoundestameliorating lever. A fatal blight speedily seizes upon snd withers
any Co-operative Society that ceases to be progressive. Ouz aim
must always be io use capital, ss it accumulates from shopkeeping,
so that it shall bene6t an ever-increasing circle of workers. Co-opera-
tive principles and, methods will apply nearly everywhere, but to make
t,hem succeed, enterprize and intelligence are needed in the executive
entrusted to carry them out snd, loyalty and patience on the .part ofmembers. The average member can stand any amount of prosperitysnd accept all the credit for it, but should adversity some, his first
thought is to seek a scapegoat on whom to lay the blame. But toreturn to our subject: —Last year witnessed such a great development
of the Building Department that we may now fairly claim to add toour many businesses that of General Builders and Coutmetors.Hitherto tlie work done by our building staff, in design and
executiou, has met with encomiums on sll sides. The new workshops
at the eud of Tanners' Lane will bear favourable comparison with any,for stability, convenience. and complete equipment with modern
maehmery, and there is every probability of work being plentiful for
some time to come. Wheelwrighting, Plumbing, snd Blacksmithing
are developments within sight.
Recently there hss been a great increase in the amount of money
granted to members to purchase houses. As every grant made for
this purpose tends to raise the standard of living of a class whose
standard needs improving, the more our capital is utilized in this wsy
the better it is for the community at large, as well ss for ourselves.
Looked at from any standpoint, the results of the business of our
Society go to benefit snd elevate the masses of the people of Lincoln
aud its vicinity, while the gains of othez similar trading companies
go away from the city sltogethet. Every one of the Society's
businesses, distributive or productive, acting and re-acting one upon
the other, promote true progress in greater degree than sny other
existing organization; As Share anil Debentuze-holders, moreover,
the Society is interested in the progress snd prosperity of some of
the principal Worl s in the City, and it holds, also on Reserve Fund,
Account, Lincoln Corporation Stock. These accessions to our stability
cannot be impugned by the most captious critics. While we have
enemies among the blatant advertising trade adventurers, such ss
are to be found in every town, we are sstis6ed that the equity of our
dealings commend the Society to all our fellow-citizens whose good
opinion is worth having. We set up no monopoly, ss we are seeused
oi doing, for we welcome to our ranks all who have moral grit enough
to pay their way snd live honestly. All our productive departments
have been established so that we may supply ourselves in the most
direst way. We enter into business to make a profit out of our own
trade. As many of us ss work for others are kept at work so long as
a pro6t can be mule fiom our labour; as many of our members ss
ivozk for the Society are working for. themselves and their fellow-
eo-operators. Last year ouz profit amounting to 820,589 18s. 5d.
was shared equitably among 9,100 persons, whish is preferable
to this amount snd what it represents being enjoyed by two or three
or all even by one pezson. As we continue tsugibly to realize that
co-operation, carrying with it the spirit of reform from within, snd
evoking the ardour for promoting all sensible reforms &em without, is
the soundest social movement of the age, 1st us have courage enough
and self-devotion enough to spread our principles from their simplest
to their highest and most perfect form, even against the adverse
eriheism or the deadening sordid selfishness of the most ignorant
and unresponsive —the' class among which it hss most need to
exercise its elevating infiuence, snd upon which it is esleulsted to
confer the greatest benefit.
In a ease recently tried, in the Court of Appeal, it was decided
that under the Friendly Societies' Act s nomination was valid up to
$100, notwithstanding that a member's investment might be greatly
in excess of that ainount. Seeing that the members of Industrial
snd Provident Societies only have power to nominate up to 8100,proiridwt tkat tder iecttbctat does aot ccittd i/tet cmosct; it was thouoht
by the Parliamentary Committee of tlie Co operative Union, at their
last meeting, that it would be advisable to try and obtain tlie same
powers for Industrial and Provident Societies that Friendly Societies
have, snd a Bill to secure this object is being drafted to be sub-
mitted to Parliament.
The conclusion of sn article on "The Private Traders' Anti-
Co-operative Movement in Scotland, " contained in the Co-operative
Wholesale Societies' Annual for 1899, by Mr. James Deans, Secretary
of the Scottish Section of the Co-operative Union, is 'as follows:"The auti-eo-operative moveinent has proved an ignominious failure.
qhe principle cause of its iguoble breakdown has been that the
traders made tne huge mistake of thinking tliat the working-classes
of to-day were uo further advanced than those of fifty years ago, that they were still in an unedncated aud unenlightened condition ofmind, and that, as a result of their laok of knowledge, their minds
stiR rankled with avsrioe, prejudice, jealousy, and envy, snd that itonly needed the apple of discord to be thrown into their ranks tobreak them up into sections warring against each other, the result
being that the co-operative movement woulil crumble into pieces, but
they might have been aware, hail they been observers of what was
taking place around them, that, during the last fifty years, theworking. classes have made vast progress in s great many respects. They are now able to discriminate in all matters relating to theirinterests, and the experienoe of the last thirty years has taught them
that the Co-operative movement is one of the levers by which theywill be able to lift themselves into s position of industrial independ-
ence snd comparative comfort. The lesson of this virulent and mostunjnsti6able attack upon the rights snd liberties of the working-classstands out distinct and unmistakable. It is that they must learn torise superior to the petty pre]udices, jealousies, snd differences inopinion that still to some extent divide their policy aud action, and to solidly aud resolutely units their forces in support of the greatorganizations that have been reared by the expenditure of anenormous ainount of thought, labour aud self-sacri6ee during thepresent century, namely, Trades Unions, Friendly Societies, andCo-operation. "

We are asked to extend the Hide, Skin, Fst, snd Wool Company's Market, held on lease from the Society, to cope with theirincreasing business, and have decided to do so ss soon as arrangements satisfactory to the Company and to ourselves are concluded.
Mr. Skepper, who has been for many years in the Society's service, lately as Branch Manager st Brseebridge, has resigned theposition in consequence of increasing years and failing health. As a diTigent and fail'hful employee he has earned the confidenceand esteem of the Committee, who regret that, within the Co-operative movement, no fund exists out of which sn allowance could begranted to employees such as Mr. Skepper, on their retirement after long and faithful senrice.
Mr. Skepper is succeeded at Bracebridge by Mr. J. W. Button, from Metheringham Branch; and his place has been filled by Mr.G. Maddison, one of the oldest employees at Welbourn Branch. We trust to have the support of the members for the new managerat each place. At Brscebridge alterations will be made to give increased shop accommodation as soon as the plans for the same areapproved by the local authorities.
We sre glad to notice that increased facilities for the supply of coals and the exceRent value given sre causing increased sales inthe Coal Department. We have no doubt whatever about being able to compete in pzice or quality, wholesale or retail, with any localCoal Merchants, and we aslz all members who aze not trading with the Society, to give the Coal Department a trial fpr six mpnthsand judge for themselves.
In view of recent local disclosures in respect to the killing for food, of animals affected with tuberculosis, anthrax, and wsstinodiseases, we earnestly request our membem to con6ne their purchases of meat wholly to the Society, where they will run no risk ofobtaining any meat of inferior quality. The Society sells no second-class meat and no foreign meat,
Arrangements are being made for the outing for Juvenile Depositors in the Penny Bank, pn May 27th st North Hykehsmthe Society's farms will be open for inspection from 8 till 7 p.m. , we expect to witness a large attendance pf me~b~r~
The Building Department Workshops are well supplied with orders, partly for work secured by tender and parHy bfurnished froin within the Society. Plumbing is s branch of work entered into since our last report. advances tp M~~be'rs to purchashouses are beingmadetoaiuuchgreater extent thanprevipusly, E2,848 having been allocated to that ptnppse during last qatarAs stated at the Annual Festival, we are prepared tp accept applications to the extent of 61fl,000 pez quarterbeen made with the Co-operative Wholesale Bociety foz that purpose.

HE Society's sales of Tea for the last Quarter amounted to 7 tons8 cwts. 1 qr. 6 lbs. Mors than 5 tons of this ws, s from theCo-operative Wholesale Society, whish is a striking testimonyto the intrinsic value of their tees. As the Co-operativeWholesale Society is an organisation created by the Retail
Co-operative Societies, and as our own Society holds capital in it tothe extent of $4,880, and is receiving from it pzofit in the shape ofinterest and dividend to the extent of 6827 5s. 2il. quarterly, it is tothe interest of all our members to purchase to as great an extentas possible goods obtained from the Wholesale Society.
In addition to being large tea importers, blenders and packers, the Wholesale Society deals with Cofi'ee and Cocoa in the samemanner, and each article graded to suit different tastes, and, of variedprices, may be obtained at any of the Society's Stores. Other foodsupplies from the Wholesale Society's Manufactories are biscuits, sweets, chocolate, jam, marmalade and pickles. Of manufacturedgoods, 'boots, soap —household and toilet varieties of all kinds —cloth, clothing and furniture take the chief place. As all the Manufactoriesof the Society are worked under fair labour conditions and the goodsproduoed are of unequalled value, they should have a special claim topreference by all co-operators.
The output from the Society's Confectionery Bakery is steadilyinczeasing, that for last Quarter being 6841, an increase of 6181 overthe corresponding Quarter of 1898, and of $165 over tliat of 1897.The confectionery sales at the Central snd Sub-Central show satis-factory progress. There is no doubt that the considerable demand forconfectionery from lazge purchasers, who are not members of theSociety, proves the quality to be superior to anything produced looally. The greatest attention is given to cleanliness in production of thegoods, and none but the best ingredients are used.
When the Mill output is compared with that of the correspondingquarter of last year, a difference of eight shillings per sask on theaverage has to be allowed for,—prices last year having been undulyhigh owing to the artifieially produced infiation in the price of wheat, caused by American speculators. The bulk of the wheat dealt withat the Mill is English, and it produces fiour excellent in qualityand fiavour. Yearly, however, the sales from the mill to Co-operativeSocieties are being afi'ected by the keen competition of millers who usea large proportion of foreign wheat. One Society with which we do alarge trade, meets this competition by blending with our fiour, inmaking bread, a considerable portion of imported fiour, to obtainwhat is technically termed, "strength, " and to suit local demands, while, for domestic purposes it is found that the flour from our Millunblended holds its own against any othez. As the mill has beenone of the most successful of our productive departments, and isnow, after a total depreciation of plant amounting to 42,482, ofgreatly more value to the Society as an asset than when it beganrunning, it appears to be advisable to consider whether it would notbe to our interest to extend it and to add new machinery for cleansingand breaking up foreign wheat. This departure was in viewwhen the mill was started, and the main shafting was devisedand azranged to permit of further extension, but it was consideredadvisable to await results of working for a few years. Experience hasjustified the wisdom of this decision, for great advances and improve-ments have been made in milling machinery of the character alludedto abave, since our milling plant was put in. For its present workthere is no doubt that Mr. Zonssoir's continuous careful andeeonomieal modifications and improvements have made the mill aseoinpaet and adequate a plant as could be designed.
Some ire seems to have been aroused recently among certainlocal buildezs in consequence of the Society having secuzed in faizcompetition a bmlding contrast of considerable value. Why this
feeling should exist it is ditficult to conceive. When this Socieiy wasstarterl, a certain section of people who considered their interestsafi'ected, pointed out tliat iusteail of so.operative shopkeeping, working-men should turn tlieir attention to co-operation in production. Now,however, that so-operative shopkeeping has furnished us with capitalfor production, in the building business among others, we are met withthe objection that we have no right to enter into this class of work. This attitude and this oppositiou are altogether unreasonable. A manmay enter into business as a builder anywhere. Evezybody admits hisright to do so. He may take in one or two, or half-a-dozen partners. He may turn his business into a Company. Nobody objects; on thecontrary, if he has been suocessful, people eagerly pay premiums tobecome shareholders. It is admitted universally that one man orhalf-a-dozen men or a large body of shareholders may nndertakebusiness of almost any conceivable character witliout a word ofhostility or complaint being uttereil against them. How then can thehostility shewn to our Society's Building Departineut be
justified
The contrary feeling oughi, ratlier to prevail because tlie differencebetween a private business or a company, and a co-operative society is,that the former work solely for their own profit, whereas co.operatorsseek their own in all men's good, for they welcome all tomembership.
It must be highly satisfactory for members to know that, con-necteil with our workshops in Tanners' Lane, we have at the presenttime 54 employees, and that already orders are booked for worl& whishwill take several months to execute. This is in addition to workilemaniled by the Society's own increasing requirements. Negotiationsare in progress for sites for dwelling-houses in a situation convenientfor a large number of our members, wlio it is believed will seize theopportunity afforded if houses are built, of becoming tenants underthe Society.
The Annual Festival of the Market Eases Branch was held onMarch 25th, and although the weather was exceedingly unfavourablethere were 160 at the Tea, and the Temperance Hall was filled at thePublic Meeting and Concert which followed. The trade receipts forthe year shewed an increase of between four hundred aud five hundredpounds. Since the Festival, an advance on mortgage has been madeto one of the losel members to enable him to become the owner of theproperty which he is occupying. Recently, a third grant on mortgagehas been made within the Horncastle Branch DistHct, a circumstaueewhish shews the infiuence of the Society is gradually but surelybecoming more widespzead. The Farmstead and Field ar, Welbourn, purchased privately some months ago, have now come into theSociety's possession and are let to the previous tenant, Mr. Scott, subject to our taking possession, at auy time, of the whole or suchportion of the land as we may require for building upon or for anyother purpose.
The determination of the Committee to make the forthcomingPenny Rank Children's Outing a success is being shewn by the stepstaken, and the arrangements already mails which are outlined below. All that is now required is fine weather, and then ii, is safe to say thisDemonstration will surpass any previous one. Waggonettes, bral-esand other conveyances, under charge of Messrs. Smaller, Hewson andSharps will be provided to convey the whole of the children fromLincoln to Hykeham. The procession, headed by a charabane con-taining the Baal will be formed along the Rroadgcte end of MonksRoad, whence it will start, in charge of two marshals, Mess~a Howardand, Codling, at 2 p.m. , going via Silver Street, Stonebow and HighStreet to Hykehsm. In the Society's Field at the Vicarage Farm, aprogramme of races and sports will be carried out under tne super-vision of Messrs. Fisher, Swaby and Duckworth. Spacious marquess, partly provided witli seats, will be erected, , and, from one of ihein, refreshmenis, as per tariff will be served by Mr. Csmmack and a stafiof assistants, under the supervision of klessrs. CfIDIdND SECTION.—No. 9. DISTRICT, LIiqCOLN.
Executive Committee.
Mr. W. Coulson (Chairman), Lincoln. i Mr. E. Hart, Grimsby.
D. bPInnes (Secretary), Lincoln. „E.WiH&inson, Gsinsborough.
C. Woodrufie, Graniham. J. W. Brown, Spslding.
J.Bonshor, Peterborough. J Brown King's Lynn.
J. Cook, Boston. J Stuifins Scunthorpe
In this district very exceptional progress has been made during the Congress
year. The most marked increases ot business sre at Peterborough, Gximsby, and
Bcunihorpe; bui progress has been made in gresiez. or less degree by nearly
aH the societies. Peterborough Society benefiied in many ways through the
Congress, snd, iis existing premises being now inadequate for some branches of the
business, great extensions sre in immediate prospect. The Boston Society hss
emerged successfully from s protracted lswauii, in which it right of drainage
from the central stores below sn adjacent, property wss assailed, and iis latest
development hss been the establishment of a house purchasing branch. The
Grimsby Society's venture into large centml stores hss brought new members
snd greatly sugncenied trade, snd, meanwhile, sn educational department and sbranch of ihe Women's Guild have been estsbfished. Suitable sites at three
cenizes convenient for members have been bought preliminary io building
houses for 212 applicants, who sre each subscribing gs. per week pending building
being begun.
The important snd rapidly developing mining, smelting, and steel-mating
district, of which Scunihorpe is the centre, hss a flourishing co-operative society,
which, by rapidly establishing branch stozes and new branches of business, is
keeping itself well abreast of the demands of the district. The only productive
society in the Lincoln district is the Lincoln Land and Bidlding Society, snorgsnissiion established in 1873 by s few membezs of the Lincoln Co-operative
Society. It has now grown into s prosperous general building snd contracting
business, with a total iurnovez of 227, 000 pez annum. During last year iheLincoln Co-operative Society built and opened new workshops, eqaipped with snexeeHent plant of modern mschinezy, snd they are now fully engaged in building
dweHing-houses for membezs snd upon extensions of trade premisea Up io thepresent time $60,000 hss been granted io membezs on mortgage. Encomaged
by iis success in farming during the last eight years, the sooieiy has taken on leasefor fouzieen years a farm of 150 acres near io its own farm si Hykeham. As thesociety has stipulated for absolute freedom of cultivation, s poxiion of the land isio be devoted io fruit and vegetables.
A considerable amount of propaganda worix continues to be carried on in theagricultural villages by several ot the societies, with results fairly successfulalthough of slow growth. The country bzsnch members of the Lincoln Societynow hold shaze capital io the extent ot 819,000. The firsi country branch wssestablished in 1878.
Conferences have been held si Bcunthorpe, where the "Benefiis of Co-operativeSoeietiss to Loysi Members e was discussed; st Gsinsborongh, when Mr. Psgetread s paper on "High and Low Dividends "; st Gmniham Mr. Strung introducedihe subject of "Store Iisnsgement"; and st Lincoln Mr. Hswson deaN with' Credit in the Stomse AH the conferences were wsH attended, and the subjects—
each chosen by the local society, ss is usual in this district —weze very fairly sndtempezately discussed.
The finsncial position of the xHstrict continues exceedingly sstisfactozy, nograni having ever yei been needed from the funds of the Co-operative Union.Voluntary subscriptions from the Societies suEce to maintain the disizici in work-ing order snd to psy the expenses snnuaHy of s delegate to Congress.
