Introduction The Indian Cotton Conference 2013, hosted by Northern India Cotton Association Ltd (NICAL), was held at The Leela Ambience, Gurgaon NCR, India on November 30, 2013. This is the first edition of this mega conference and Exhibition. This report’s main objective is to provide detailed information, useful to the Organising Committee, and NICAL for future editions of Indian Cotton Conferences.

Committees In the initial stages, NICAL President along with select key Board members conceptualized the need to host the Indian Cotton Conference and supervised the day to day progress. As the event grew in size and stature, more and more members were involved. The final list of Committee members is as given below:

Programme

Conferences Topics Since the theme of the Conference was “Growing Together” with an objective of involving all stake holders in the Cotton Value Chain, topics had to be chosen with great care. Since this Conference was held for only one day, and the Organising Committee had desired to encompass as maximum topics to cover all segments of the cotton value chain, it was very necessary to choose topics which would be of interest to all attendees.

Keynote Speakers AB Joshi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, GoI

A Post Graduate in Botany, Mr. Joshi joined the civil services in 1979. Mr. Joshi has served in various capacities in the Department of Post and Department of Heavy Industries before taking on this assignment with Ministry of Textiles, GoI.

Anthony Tancredi

Chief Executive Officer Allenberg Cotton Co, Global Head, Louis Dreyfus Cotton Platform.,

Graduating with honors from Carleton College, he began his cotton career when he joined Allenberg in August of 1985. Spending many years as the head global physical cotton trader, he was responsible for expanding the company into various key international markets and still oversees the implementation of strategic global trading game plans. Tancredi is a member of Louis Dreyfus Commodities Executive Group and is on various boards, committees and charities inside and outside of the cotton industry. When not involved in cotton activity, he can be found receiving

instructions from his wife or one of his three children.

Ray Butler Managing Director of Cotlook Limited,

Ray Butler has spent most of his career with Cotton Outlook, having joined the company in 1975 after graduation and a short spell working in the UK textiles industry. He subsequently advanced to become chief editor of Cotton Outlook’s information services in 1989, and majority owner of the business. Today, Ray acts in an advisory capacity to the present editor, but remains heavily engaged in the company’s editorial function, particularly in respect of its price monitoring activities. He is also fully involved, in his role as managing director, with strategic issues and business development.

During his career, Ray for many years served as a UK delegate to the International Cotton Advisory Committee’s Plenary Meetings and has been actively engaged as a director in the workings of the International Cotton Association and its predecessor organisation, the Liverpool Cotton Association, in both of which he was honoured to serve as President.

Ms Sun Juan

Marketing Director of China National Cotton Exchange (CNCE),

Board Director of Beijing Cotton Outlook Consulting Limited, (a joint venture of CNCE, China Cotton Association and Cotlook Limited)

Before working in CNCE, Ms Sun worked in China Cotton and Jute Bureau, a top cotton policy planner in the planning economy age. She managed several departments of the CNCE during the past 15 years, such as the Information Department, Foreign Trade Department, Warehousing and Logistics Department, Strategy Planning Department, etc. Ms Sun is also working for China Cotton

Warehousing and Logistics association, a branch body of China Cotton Association. With the rich working experience in the industry, Ms Sun has rich knowledge of cotton market information, cotton foreign trade, logistics and cotton policies

Mr. S. P. Oswal

Chairman, Vardhman Group, India

He is having 45 years of experience in the textile industry. He holds a Masters Degree in Commerce with Gold Medal from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Mr. Oswal has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award by the Hon’ble President of India in the year 2010.

Mr. Oswal developed business on sound management principles and created conducive organisational culture with value system. He was ahead of his times to start professional management in Vardhman by inducting management trainees

and also people from special expertise since early 1970s. He is a man of detail and dedicated to achieve excellence in whichever field he works.

Besides key note addresses, there were six panel discussions on specific topics. During the panel discussions, the respective convenor asked a pre-determined question to each panel member. Each Panel Discussion concluded with a Q & A session.

Awards Categories of Awards

Life Time Achievement Award: Mr. SP Oswal, Chairman Vardhman Group, India for his outstanding contribution to the Cotton Industry. Award consisted of a citation and a shawl.

Special Award for an outstanding achievement: Mr. Mohit Shah of Gill & Co Pvt Ltd, Mumbai for being elected as the first Asian and also the youngest President of International Cotton Association, UK. Award consisted of a citation and a shawl.

Special Award to NGOs’ for their contribution to Cotton Value Chain: a) Reviving Green Revolution Cell, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, PAU, Ludhiana b) Ambuja Cement Foundation. Each award consisted of a citation and a shawl.

Navaratan Entrepreneur Awards: Given to nine entrepreneurs for their individual contributions to the industry. Each award consisted of a citation and a shawl.

Entrepreneur awards were bestowed on Zonal Basis. This year selections were made from the North Zone; and in subsequent years the nominations will be called from the three remaining zones on rotational basis. This year, the Awardees were:

Media Coverage ICC 2013 received excellent Media coverage in both print and electronic format during the conference. National as well regional coverage was done by TV channels by telecasting the sessions and reports. Special bulletins were also aired.

Inaugural Ceremony

Lamp lighting by chief guest Shri K. S Rao, honourable minister of Textile, Govt. of India ICC 2013 was successfully hosted at Gurgaon, India with more than 800 participants from 5 countries. The inaugural ceremony was held on 30th November 2013 at 1000 hrs at the Pearl Ballroom of The Leela Ambience, Gurgaon NCR a prominent landmark in the NCR. Since the conference was held for the first time in India, there was overwhelming response from NICAL members and the cotton fraternity. The Opening Ceremony session was attended by more than 800 participants, exhibitors and media personnel.

The proceedings started with the EmmCee welcoming distinguished guests and all delegates. The Conference was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. KS Rao, Minister of Textiles, GOI. Other dignitaries on the dais included Mr. Ashok Tanwar, Member of Parliament from Sirsa (Haryana), Mr. AB Joshi, Textile Commissioner GOI, Mr. SP Oswal, Chairman Vardhman Group India, Mr. Mohit D Shah, President International Cotton Association UK, Mr. BK Mishra, Chairman CCI,Mr. Anthony Tancredi, CEO Allenberg Cotton Ltd UK, Mr. Ray Butler, Managing Director Cotlook, UK, Mr. Mahesh Sharda, President NICAL, and Mr. Rakesh Rathi, Past President NICAL.

After the dignitaries were seated, floral bouquets were presented to them by distinguished Directors of NICAL.

This was followed by the traditional Lamp lighting ceremony amidst chanting of traditional Vedic hymns.

Mr. SP Oswal, Chairman Vardhaman Group, India delivered the Special Address.

Mr. AB Joshi, Commissioner Textile was then invited to address the august gathering.

Mr. Mohit D Shah, President International Cotton Association UK addressed the gathering.

On behalf of Shri. BS Hooda, CM Haryana, Mr. Ashok Tanwar, Member of Parliament Sirsa, Hrayana then addressed the gathering.

Cultural Programme and Cocktail Dinner A networking opportunity was presented by hosting a Cultural Programme along with a Cocktail Dinner at the same venue. The Programme started at 8.00 pm with “Dances of India” comprising of: 1) Kathak Duet : Classical dance from Jaipur Gharana. 2) Garba : Folk dance from Gujarat, performed on the nine nights of Navratras. 3) Dhol Cholom : Drum dance from Manipur. 4) Koli Dance : A fisher folk dance from Maharashtra. 5) Stick Dance : A marshal art dance from Manipur. 6) Goomer : A folk dance from Rajasthan. 7) Bhavai : A Dance on sharp swords, glass tumblers, brass plate, pieces of glass. 8) Bhangara : A folk Dance by Sikh Boys. Cocktail snacks and drinks were served during the Programme, followed by Dinner.
