Report: 2012 IPL Final   KKR v CSK Bisla, Kallis power Kolkata Knight Riders to maiden IPL title The Kolkata Knight Riders recorded their first ever IPL win as they trounced defending champions,  Chennai Super Kings, in a tightly contested match at Chepauk.  Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla and Jacques Kallis were the architects of KKR’s historic victory; the pair helping their side to a five-wicket win, after CSK had posted a daunting score of 190. Earlier, KKR were forced to make a couple of changes to their side with Laxmipathy Balaj i’s hamstring injury not having heale d itself completely. Brett Lee came in to the playing XI replacing Balaji, while M S Bisla stepped into the wicketkeeper’s role, due to which Debabrata Das sat out. CSK, meanwhile, played an unchanged side. The defending champions put on a dominating batting performance for the third game in a row. After MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat first, Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey struck an 87-run stand to give the hosts a perfect foundation for a big score. Vijay pulled the quicks and used his feet to loft the KKR spinners. Hussey, on the other hand, charged down the wicket to the pacers and brought out, both the sweep and the reverse sweep to unleash a flurry of fours and sixes. KKR eventually got their first breakthrough when Vijay (42), attempting to pull Rajat Bhatia over deep square-leg, was caught by a diving Shakib Al Hasan in the 11th over. Vijay’s wicket didn’t slow CSK down though. Suresh Raina played a blinder to ensure the defending champions stayed on course to post a big score. Raina heaved Kallis for six over midwicket in the 12th over and smote Yusuf Pathan for 14 runs in three balls in the 14th before smashing Brett Lee and Sunil Narine for a six each in the 16th and 17th overs respectively. The Kolkata franchise picked their second wicket when Hussey (54) was bowled by Kallis off the first ball of the 18th over. But with Raina hitting a feisty 73 off just 38 balls and MS Dhoni chipping in with a nine-ball 14*, CSK finished at a challenging 190 for three in 20 overs. Raina was out, caught brilliantly by Lee off the last ball of CSK’s innings. Chasing 191 to win their maiden IPL title, KKR’s hopes were dealt a crushing below when in -form batsman Gautam Gambhir (2) was bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus off a slower ball in just the first over. Bisla, who opened with Gambhir, nonetheless set about reviving the KKR innings. The opening batsman bludgeoned Albie Morkel for four fours in the fourth over and then lofted R Ashwin over the boundary ropes for a couple of sixes in the sixth to b ring up KKR’s 50 in just 5.4 overs. Bisla then targeted Dwayne Bravo, flicking and lofting t he CSK pacer for a four and a six over in the ninth overs, after which he hit Shadab Jakati for two consecutive fours to take his team to 111 for one in 11 overs. With Bisla firing, Kallis was happy to play second fiddle, and he had scored only 28 when the 100-run partnership between the two was brought up in the 11th over. However, when Bisla (89 off 48 balls) was caught at point by Badrinath in the 15th over, the all-rounder switched gears to take control of the run-chase. With KKR needing 50 off the last five overs, Kallis went after Shadab Jakati and Bravo. He hit them for a total of 23 runs in the 16th and 17th overs respectively. CSK tried their best to stymie KKR’s chances with a couple of wickets, including Kallis’ scalp, at the end. However, with KKR needing 16 to win off the last seven deliveries, Shakib Al Hasan (11* off seven) punished Ben Hilfenhaus for bowling a full toss over waist height (no ball) by scooping the CSK pacer for four to fine leg. Manoj Tiwary (nine not out off three balls) then heaved Dwayne Bravo for consecutive boundaries in the last over to bring up a famous win for the Knight Riders. Scorecard Man-of-the-match:  Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla for his match-winning 48-ball 89 (8x4, 5x6) that helped KKR win their first ever IPL title.

Does the Khan-Ka-Khandan Magnet work?

In this section we try to answer the question “Does a celebrity magnet work?” If it works, to what extend it is working and if not

why is it not working.Joy @JoyDas in his tweet says, “If u Check SMJ Hash tag, you will find 95% talking about Aamir Khan –  5% about Female Foeticide! And that puts ourPriorities in Perspective”. His claim is not backed by a strong research data, buthisguesstimate might be true to some extent.

Oliver Twist is a well-known story, but the book is not as widely read as one would imagine. The novel has all the vivid

storytelling and unimpeachable literary skill that Dickens brings to all his novels, but there's also a raw, gritty quality.

Oliver Twist was enormously influential in bringing to light the atrocious treatment of paupers and orphans in Dickens's time. The novel is not only a brilliant work of art but also a tremendously important document in social history.

Oliver Twist: Overview

Oliver is born in a workhouse in the first half of the nineteenth century. His mother dies during his birth, and he is sent to an

orphanage (where he is poorly treated). Along with the other orphans, Oliver is regularly beaten and poorly fed. In a famousepisode, he walks up to the the stern authoritarian, Mr. Bumble, and asks for more. For this impertinence, he is put out of theworkhouse. He then runs away from the family who take him in. He wants to find his fortune in London. Instead, he falls in witha boy called Jack Dawkins, who is part of a child gang of thieves--run by Fagin.

Oliver is brought into the gang and trained as a pickpocket. When he goes out on his first job, he runs away and is nearly sent to

prison. However, the kindness of the person who was robbed, saves him from the terrors of the city gaol, and instead he is takeninto the philanthropic gentleman's home. However, as soon as he thinks he is settled, Bill Sikes and Nancy (two members of thegang) takes him back. Oliver is once more sent out on a job--this time assisting Sikes on a burglary. The job goes wrong and Oliver is shot and left behind. Once more he is taken in (this time by the Maylies, the family he was sentto rob), and he spends a wonderful time with them. However, once more Fagin's gang comes after him. Nancy, who is worried

about Oliver, tells the Maylies what is happening. When the gang find out about Nancy's treachery, they murder her.

Meanwhile, the Maylies reunite Oliver with the gentleman who helped him out earlier and who (in true Victorian-novel style)turns out to be Oliver's uncle. Fagin has been arrested and hanged for his crimes; and Oliver settles down to a pampered life (re-

united--happily--with his family).

The Psychology of Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is probably not the most brilliantly delving psychological novel, but then it's not supposed to be. Rather, Oliver Twist gives us an impression of the social situation at the time it was written, and is does so with a Hogarthian gusto. Mr.Bumble, the beadle, is an excellent example of Dickens' broad characterization at work. Bumble is a overlarge, terrifying figure:

a tin-pot Hitler, who is both frightening to the boys under his control, and also slightly pathetic in his need to maintain his powerover them.

Fagin, too, is a wonderful example of Dickens ability to draw a caricature and place it in a story that moves quickly and alwayskeeps our attention. Less the pantomime villain that is portrayed in a number of its adaptations, there is a streak of cruelty in

Dickens' Fagin, with a sly charisma that has makes him such a lasting archetype.

The Importance of Oliver Twist

Equally, the importance of Oliver Twist as a crusading work of art (hoping to show the difficult circumstances with which the

poor in Dickens’s time had to live) should not be underestimated. It is certainly an excellent work of art, but it is also a testament to the hopes for a better, more enlightened age.

A delightful story--peopled with larger than life, very human characters--Dickens' Oliver Twist is a considerable achievement.Funny and incredibly sad, the novel is complete in all its aspects. Oliver Twist is a powerful indictment of the times in which thenovel was written.
