REPORT ON CELEBRATION OF

INTERNATIONAL OZONE DAY, 2020

AT GCPC-ENVIS RP

16TH SEPTEMBER, 2020

The International Ozone Day, 2020 was celebrated by GCPC-ENVIS RP on 16th September,

2020 under the leadership of Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator,

GCPC-ENVIS in the presence of GCPC team members.

The celebration started with introduction on importance Ozone Layer its depletion, current

situation by Ms. Priyanka Joshi, Information Officer, GCPC-ENVIS RP. She also briefed about

the major ozone depleting substances (ODS) such as refrigerants, fire extinguishers, refrigerants,

compressors, vehicles, etc. She then mentioned about the effects of Ozone Depletion on Flora,

Faunna, Environment and Humans and urged participants towards protecting the ozone depletion

through simple activities in day-to-day life.

She than briefed about the Montreal Protocol, 1987 towards the commitment of countries on

getting rid of the Depletion of Ozone Layer. Ms. Joshi than continued the presentation

mentioning about the current status of Ozone Layer as per the 7th September, 2020 a study

conducted by the U.S. Federal Government Agency – The National Aeronautics and Space

Administration (NASA) on the progress of the ozone hole, followed by the group discussion on

simple steps to prevent Ozone Layer Depletion.

The session continued with presentation from Dr. Khushboo Bhavsar, Assistant Environment

Engineer, GCPC (PhD Environmental Sciences, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad) on ‘Removal

of ammoniacal nitrogen from wastewater using agricultural waste, activated carbon and

industrial waste.

She described physic technology for environmental wastewater abatement including the issues

faced by the industries with molecule called ammoniacal nitrogen. She briefed about the issues

faced to humans and the environment such as eutrophication, including the various treatment

schemes for the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen and the waste utilization from agricultural

waste such as coconut coir, groundnut shell, maize cob, maize leaf, rice husk, saw dust,

sugarcane bagasse, watermelon shell, wheat straw and industrial wastes such as CETP Sludge,

Coal Fly Ash, Denim ETP Sludge, Electrical Industrial ETP Sludge, Fly Ash, Metal ETP Sludge,

Pesticide ETP Sludge, Red Mud and Waste Tea.

To enhance efficiency the combine mixture ratio of agricultural, industrial wastes and activated

carbon were evaluated and the efficiency to remove ammoniacal nitrogen from waste water was

succeeded and it reached upto 98%.

The programme continued with Q&A session between Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator,

ENVIS and GCPC team about the prevention of ozone layer depletion.

The session concluded showcasing of a theme based video on ‘Ozone for Life’ created by UN

Environment, Poster Presentation and a concluding remarks from Dr. Bharat Jain, Member

Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS.

WEBINAR ON CLEANER PRODUCTION

& CLEAN TECHNOLOGY

18TH SEPTEMBER, 2020

The webinar on Cleaner Production and Clean Technology was organized by GCPC-ENVIS RP

as a part of the International Ozone Day, 2020 celebration under the guidance of Dr. Bharat Jain,

Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS.

Dr. Sanjay Gandhi, Chief Manager, Gujarat Fluorochemical Ltd (GFL)., Dahej, (Bharuch) was

invited as a guest in the webinar.

The webinar witnessed participation of around 76 members from Industries, Academia,

Government Organizations, ENVIS Hubs and Resource Partners, etc.

The webinar started with welcome address and a brief introduction of the Organization, Member

Secretary & ENVIS Coordinator, GCPC and about the webinar by Ms. Priyanka Joshi,

Information Officer, ENVIS.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jain welcomed guests and the participants. He discussed the

activities of GCPC and GCPC-ENVIS.

He continued with presentation on ‘Emission Reduction – Responsible Production through

Cleaner Production and Clean Technology’.

Dr. Jain gave brief introduction of Ozone Layer, Share of major countries in CO2 emissions

mentioning China as the major contributor of CO2 emission.

Then he briefed about the contribution of India mentioning as the third largest emitter of Carbon

Dioxide (CO2). He briefed top four major emitters of CO2 globally emits total 59% which

includes countries such as China (27%), United States (15%), The European Union (10%) and

India (7%). The rest of the world contributes 41%.

Dr. Jain also mentioned about the direct and indirect sources of Greenhouse Gas (GHG)

Emissions including the GHG emissions by different sectors comprising of Commercial and

Residential, Industrial, Agricultural, Electrical and Transportation including the GHG emissions

generation due to our day to day activities, using of cooking gas cylinders, smart phones,

passenger vehicles, home electricity use, washing machines and use of computers.

Use of diesel, coal, plastic bottles, bags and internet browsing also emits GHG emission. Then he

briefed about CO2 emission generation per Kg production, process, transportation of food items

such as Rice, Cauliflower, Wheat, Brinjal, Milk, Banana, Potato, Apple, etc. including CO2

emission generation by transportation sector.

He showcased the scenario of the average Carbon Footprints for Rural and Urban Households for

all income groups per year.

Dr. Jain, briefed the role of energy efficient equipments in reducing GHG emissions showcasing

examples of LEDs. He mentioned the opportunities of reducing GHG emissions in residential

and commercial sectors giving simple examples urged participants to go energy efficient in day

to day activities. He focused on enhancing efficiencies of fossil fired power plants converting

coal-fired boiler to use of natural gas, converting a single-cycle gas turbine into a combined-

cycle turbine, increasing the share of renewable energy such as wind, solar, hydro and

geothermal.

He urged participants to adapt Cleaner Production – A Pollution Prevention Strategy. He

discussed Cleaner Production – Concept including the Tools and Methodology to implement

Cleaner Production.

Dr. Jain concluded discussing the Case Studies of resource consumption and GHG emissions

reduction in different industrial sectors on successful completion of Cleaner Production

Assessment by GCPC in different industrial sectors such as Pulp and Paper, Textile, Ceramic,

Re-Rolling, etc.

The session continued with presentation on “Ozone Depleting Substances, Technological

Options and Case Study” by Dr. Sanjay Gandhi, Chief Manager, GFL, Dahej. He briefed about

the Ozone Layer, Adopting Vienna Convention, Montreal Protocol, Role (Caser Study) of

Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd., Ozone Rules 2000 for CFCs and its applicability, Performance

Verification of CFC Phase Out, Key findings on Technology and Economic and Success on

Protection of Ozone Layer.

He mentioned about the formation of Ozone Layer and its depletion as a result and natural and

man-made activities, correlation between Ozone Depletion and Skin Diseases, Ozone Depletion

Process, etc.

He mentioned without the Montreal Protocol, the Antarctic Ozone hole would have been about

40% larger by 2013 and deeper Arctic Ozone depletion would have occurred in the very cold

winter of 2011. The Montreal Protocol phases down the consumption and production of the

different ODS in a step-wise manner, with different timetables for developed and developing

countries.

Ozone protection efforts have contributed to slowing climate change by avoiding an estimated

135 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent emissions from 1990 to 2010.

He discussed the challenges in phasing out HCFCs in a climate friendly manner. He concluded

mentioning that Montreal Protocol contributes to the SDGs.

The session concluded with Q&A between the experts and the participants and with vote of

thanks from Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS.
