1. Introduction The Khanuy Valley Archaeology Project aims to provide a better understanding of the

nature of the social and economic organization of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age

Xiongnu period (mid second millennia BCE to early first century CE) societies of north-

central Mongolia, so as to investigate social change during this pivotal period in

Mongolian history.

Together with the on-going study of the numerous monumental stone-built mortuary and

ritual sites in the Khanuy River Valley, this research project focuses specifically on the

domestic component, that is, the occupation areas associated with the monumental

landscape.

1.1 Research Area and Environmental Setting

The Khanuy Valley research area (N 48° 05’ / E101° 03’) is located north of the Khangai

(Hangai) mountain range in Arkhangai aimag’s Ondor Ulaan sum. The Khanuy River

itself is a tributary of the Selenge River and meanders through the Valley’s generally

treeless grasslands, with wooded areas (mixed pine, larch, and birch forest) typically

found only at elevations above 1700 m. Environmental data for Mongolia and the

surrounding northern regions show that the environmental conditions that prevailed

during the Late Bronze Age and the Xiongnu period in north-central Mongolia can be

described as broadly similar to those of today, but with possibly warmer and wetter

climate regimes (Prouse 2005). In fact, geochemical records from lakes in the Khanuy

Valley (Strano et al. 2007), as well as sedimentological evidence and pollen analysis

suggest that between 3570 and 1500 years ago (the Late Bronze and Iron Age) the

climate was more humid (Peck 2000) and that grasslands were expanding, thus increasing

the volume of grazing possible—a condition that also characterized the surrounding

regions of Lake Baikal (Feng 2001; Horiuchi et al. 2000; Karabanov et al. 2000; Peck et

al. 2002), the Egiin Gol-Selenge Valley (Prouse 2005) and the Minusinsk Basin

(Bokovenko 2006, 863 Fig.2; Koulkova 2003, 255-74; van Geel et al. 2004).

Furthermore, an analysis of archaeological charcoals and wild plant remains from Bronze

and Iron Age habitation contexts in the Khanuy Valley research area confirms that the

local environmental conditions were similar to those of today (Wang / Wang 2009).

2. SUMMARY OF 2010 ACTIVITIES 2.1 Research and Education Activities:

As a component of the long-term Khanuy Valley Archaeology Project, the 2010 field

season (part of a 2 year program) aimed at starting to address an important question in the

anthropological literature on nomadic pastoralism, that is, the impact of major economic

and social changes on nomadic society and pastoral subsistence—a question still very

pertinent today in various world regions. The project consists of a multidisciplinary

endeavor that includes archaeology, zooarchaeology, paleobotany and geoarchaeology

(including new archaeometric methods) in order to document the transformation of the

domestic economy of mobile pastoralist groups inhabiting the Khanuy Valley region of

central Mongolia from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age period when the first state-

like nomadic polity, the Xiongnu, appeared on the Eurasian steppes. In other words, this

research project is evaluating continuity and change in the range, organization and

variation of household activities as the region is incorporated into a regional-scale polity.

The objective of this research is to find out if and how a representative sample of

households responded to and participated in the broader political and economic system.

Once completed, this project will provide the first detailed archaeological investigation in

Mongolia of the effects, if any, of large-scale political processes on household economic

organization amongst mobile pastoralists.

In order to evaluate this, multicomponent occupation areas (habitation sites) known from

previous survey in the Khanuy River Valley are being investigated through relatively

large-scale targeted excavations in order to provide a better understanding of site

structure and in order to yield larger samples of artifacts and faunal remains for sampling

variation both within and between areas of occupation. The 2010 field season consisted in

both geoarchaeological testing and in the horizontal (and vertical) exposure of two

multicomponent seasonal occupation areas (campsites). In addition, highly controlled

ethnoarchaeological work (including geo-ethnoarchaeological and ethno-

zooarchaeological research) was conducted at a present-day campsite in the Valley for

comparative and interpretative purposes.

6

Ceramics as well as faunal remains were the most common materials recovered through

the excavations, although we did uncover a few finished metal objects. We also further

documented clear evidence for metal production in the form of iron slag. Soil samples

have been gathered for soil chemistry analysis and microstratigraphy. These are awaiting

shipping permits for laboratory analysis. Distributional and comparative analyses

(including statistical analyses) of the recovered artifacts and faunal remains are currently

being undertaken in Mongolia, in the UK and in the USA by both co-directors (Jean-Luc

Houle and Jamsranjav Bayarsaikhan), and the people listed above in the section entitled

‘other collaborators’.

2.2 Training and Development:

The 2010 field season provided training in archaeological fieldwork to 11 Mongolian

students from National University and Ulaanbaatar University, as well as 20 North

American, European and Australian students from various universities. These students

were trained in screened excavations, artifact analysis, zooarchaeological analysis,

geoarchaeology, mapping and ethnoarchaeology (Figure 1). Students also worked on

continuing to build the faunal reference collection for zooarchaeological purposes.

7

2.3 Outreach Activities:

Public outreach in the field in Mongolia was a continuous and informal process. We

regularly visited and conversed with local herders as well as with local administrators,

during which time we explained the nature and worth of our scientific research, as well as

the importance of protecting cultural patrimony. To date, talks on some of the results of

this component of the research project have been given in the Department of

Anthropology, Washington University in St. Louis (USA), at a workshop on Archaeology

in Mongolia at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (USA), and at the

31st Association for Environmental Archaeology (AEA) Annual Conference,

International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto, Japan. In addition, some of

the artifactual materials recovered by our team this summer have been displayed in

October of this year during a special exhibit on collaborative projects at the National

Museum of Mongolia.

2.4 Physical Collection (artifacts, samples, etc.):

The artifacts recovered from excavations comprise a physical collection of utility for

future research in the region.

Sharing Information:

The collection is presently under the care of the National Museum of Mongolia

(Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia). A catalog of this collection is included as an appendix to this

report, so that it may be used in the management of the region's archeological resources1.

2.5 Physical Collection (modern faunal skeletal samples):

The zooarchaeologist and students working with this project continued to put together a

faunal reference collection from the Khanuy River Valley (north-central Mongolia)

whose utility is to provide comparative material for the identification of archaeological

faunal remains.

Sharing Information:

The faunal reference collection is available at the National Museum of Mongolia

(Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia).

1 Note: The ceramic chronology in the catalog is preliminary. Detailed analysis of the ceramic material is forthcoming.

3. Archaeological Excavations of Habitation Sites

During the 2010 field season (May and June) 2 multicomponent seasonal occupation

areas (habitation sites) that were known from previous survey and test excavations in the

Khanuy River Valley research area were investigated more intensively through relatively

large-scale targeted excavations and geoarchaeology. These occupation areas are strongly

believed to be respectively winter and summer time campsite locations based on

ethnographic observation and archaeological data (Houle 2010). The following sections

summarize the methods and results of the excavations at both occupation areas (Figure

2). The artifacts recovered consist primarily of ceramics and faunal remains dating to

both the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age Xiongnu periods, although a small number of

Turkic and Mongol period ceramics have been found as well.

Fig. 2. Location of occupation areas (habitation sites) excavated in 2010 (SP26E-MAC and SP32E-MAB). Red triangles indicate original positive shovel probes; blue pentagons indicate present-day campsites; yellow stars indicate slag.

3.1 Stratigraphic Setting and Excavation Methods

The relatively arid-steppe soil which covers not only the lowland but also the rocky hills

and mountains in the research area is a sandy-gravely (sometimes rubbly) chestnut-

colored soil poor in humus content (Munsell 10YR 3/2 to 4/4). The A-horizon soil

stratum almost never exceeds 20cm outside the floodplain and overlies a gravely layer.

This gravely layer is almost ubiquitous throughout the valley’s research area and

sometimes includes coarser pebble to cobble clast size rocks. A sandy to clayey grayish

often compact and mostly sterile layer underlies the whole sequence. The former, and

occasionally the latter when the gravely layer was not clearly present, often formed the

stratigraphic limit of our excavations. As clear stratigraphic layers have not been seen in

previous excavations in the evenly deflating steppe of central Mongolia, units were

excavated by arbitrary levels of 5 cm using a trowel until the sterile layer was reached

(often no more than around 20 cm below the surface). All soil was systematically

screened through 6 mm wire mesh. These excavations confirmed the lack of clear

stratigraphic layering, although soil samples were taken from exposed contexts to test for

mircrostratigraphy. The results of these soil samples are not yet available.

While all artifacts (and ecofacts) within a unit were recorded according to its stratigraphic

context within which they were excavated, diagnostic artifacts, diagnostic faunal remains,

as well as features and samples were recorded more precisely using three dimensional

coordinates and labeled accordingly. Organic materials were collected from good/secure

contexts for radiocarbon dating and particular care was taken to recover faunal and floral

remains in these excavations through both systematic screening (using 6 mm wire mesh)

and some flotation.

3.2 Sites 3.2.1 SP32E-MAB GPS Coordinates: 48°04’37” N 101°04’55” E (Zone 47U N: 5326949

N 655069 E) Site Context: Mixed Bronze Age and Iron Age/Xiongnu (Figure 3).

This occupation area is located within 200 m of the Khanuy River channel and is situated

exactly at the same place as a modern-day summer campsite. The terrain is mostly flat

10

except close to the floodplain, and the area is characterized by grassy vegetation. The

extent of this occupation area is less than 1 ha in area. No burials are associated with this

occupation area. Today, one campsite usually sets up here during the summer. Five 6 m x

6 m units (divided into 2 m x 2 m units for excavation purposes) were excavated here for

a total of 180 square meters. The average maximum depth of excavations was about 15

cm below the surface, with only a few units reaching 20-25 cm in depth. Most of the

artifacts were found around 10 cm below the surface, with only occasional artifacts found

at slightly greater depths. For a riverside site, this occupation area was extremely rich in

terms of material remains—the richest riverside site known in the research area and

comparable to sites along the foothills. Excavations at this site yielded 1745 ceramic

sherds, 690 of which were Late Bronze Age, 834 Xiongnu period, 7 Turk and 214

undetermined. It also yielded faunal remains belonging to sheep, goat, cattle and horse

(see the complete assessment of faunal remains below2), as well as a large amount of

charcoal and slag—indicating metallurgy. This is interesting as this is the only riverside

habitation site in the region to have yielded evidence for metallurgy. All other 5 sites to

have yielded slag in the research area have been located along the foothills (Figure 2).

For the first time, we also uncovered 2 postholes in unit 11 (Figure 4). This unit is located

near another unit excavated in 2008 that yielded a hearth. Although it cannot be

confirmed, the spacing of these postholes is consistent with that of present-day corner

posts that are used in animal enclosures. The problem with identifying archaeological

postholes in the research area, however, is that deposits are shallow and therefore even

modern-day posts go through the archaeological layers. However, there was no evidence

of these postholes in the top layers, suggesting that these are much older. They were also

consistent with the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age/Xiongnu period deposits.

Unfortunately, no artifacts or organic matter were directly associated with these postholes

and so we cannot date them or associate them with a particular period.

2 A detailed zooarchaeological report is in progress.

Site Context: Mixed Bronze Age and Iron Age/Xiongnu. (Figure 5).

This occupation area is located within a valley draw along the western foothills and

down-slope (south) from a concentration of six Late Bronze-Age ‘slope’ burials. A slight

slope characterizes the area itself, with little to no vegetation other than grass.

Furthermore, the site is one of the smallest occupation areas (ca. 2 ha) in the research area

and it is located on a fairly high terrace with no access to water and with little shelter

from the cold winter winds. Despite its odd setting, the site is consistent with the location

of modern-day winter/fall campsites in the valley. According to local herders, nobody has

occupied this area in living memory and there is apparently no reason, according to local

herders, to occupy this less favorable location if other better suited places are available.

This suggests that the Valley was more densely occupied, at least seasonally, during the

Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age Xiongnu period.

13

Four 6 m x 6 m units (divided into 2 m x 2 m units for excavation purposes) were

excavated here for a total of 144 square meters. Units were excavated to a maximum

depth of 25 cm (and only exceptionally to 30 cm), with most of the artifacts found

between 10 and 20 cm below the surface.

In spite of its small size, excavations at this occupation area revealed an amazing amount

of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age Xiongnu material. Excavations yielded a total of 1989

ceramic sherds, 592 of which belong to the Late Bronze Age, 1393 to the Xiongnu

period, 1 to the Turkic period and 3 undetermined. Sheep, goat, cattle and horse bones

were also recovered (see the complete assessment of faunal remains below3) as well as a

large amount of charcoal and slag—indicating metallurgy (Figure 6). The distribution of

slag (and charcoal) as well as preliminary geochemical analysis of soils at the site suggest

2 discrete loci of metal production (i.e. in units 10 and 13).

3 A detailed zooarchaeological report is in progress.

This assessment covers the bones excavated as a part of the Khanuy Valley Project in 2010. Those from MAB and MAC were recovered by screening with a 6mm mesh, those from KYR1 by screening with a 3mm mesh and those from KYR119 were hand collected.

Bronze Age Assemblage

Bones from Bronze Age contexts appear to be in generally poor condition – those from the KYR sites are almost uniformly calcined. Elsewhere burning, weathering and root-etching were all problems noted. Exceptions to this occur with smaller and more delicate elements – those from lagomorphs, rodents, fish and birds, which are in remarkably good condition.

Possible signs of rodent gnawing were detected on one element and of carnivore gnawing on another element, while two examples of worked bone were observed, all from MAB. Also at MAB was a Bos element with a possible traction-related pathology.

Helical fractures and signs of other butchery were detected in assemblages from MAB and MAC.

Bronze Age/Xiongnu Assemblage

Bones recovered from mixed Bronze Age/Xiongnu contexts are of generally poor condition – burning, weathering and root-etching were all problems noted. However, helical fractures and signs of other butchery were detected in both assemblages.

Xiongnu Assemblage

Bones recovered from Xiongnu contexts are of generally poor condition – burning, weathering and root-etching were all problems noted.

An example of a digested caprine element was discovered in each assemblage.

Helical fractures and signs of other butchery were detected in both assemblages.

5. Stone Circle

Past excavations of stone circles located around khirigsuurs revealed concentrations of

fragmented burnt/calcined animal bones of various indeterminate livestock. The purpose

of the excavation of yet another stone circle was to locate bones that were diagnostic in

nature so as to determine more precisely what species were deposited in these stone

features.

A 2m x 2m unit was opened in order to determine the contents of a stone circle that is one

of over one thousand surrounding the Bronze Age khirigsuur KYR1 (Urt Bulagyn). This

circle was chosen at random and was located on the western side of the site [48° 05’

29.8” N 101° 03’ 29.7” E]. A total of seven stones comprising the ‘stone circle’ were

visible on the ground surface. Bone fragments were found at ca. 10-15 cm below surface.

All material was screened through 3mm wire mesh. It is worth noting that, as is usually

the case, very little charcoal was found with the cremated bone fragments. This suggests

that bones were probably cremated elsewhere and then deposited inside the stone circles.

Nearly all of the faunal remains in the stone circle were calcined and reduced to pieces

barely more than a few mm in diameter. However, of the more than 2,700 fragments, it

was possible to piece together four specimens, including a proximal radius and a first

phalanx (Broderick, forth). T

specimens (two outermost

ones) from a two month old

collection. Although bone

can shrink by up to 20%

when calcined it is clear,

thanks to the additional find

of an unfused diaphysis,

that this was a lamb. A cut

6. Ethno-Zooarchaeology

Alongside the archaeological investigations, a complex ethno-zooarchaeological research

project is being undertaken. Together with interviews with the local population, we have

carried out thorough field walking of a recently abandoned winter campsite. This

consisted of dividing a whole campsite – some 80m x 120m, defined by its former

occupant, into a grid of 2 m squares. Each of these squares then had all of the faunal

material bagged and collected, and then recorded in the same database, and using the

same methodology as, the archaeological material. This exercise serves two principal

purposes – the 2m grid was chosen because it is the same size as the excavation units on

the archaeological sites, thus, by using GPS mapping, we hope to identify any patterns of

distribution in the faunal data and compare it to the archaeological material. The second

purpose was the collection of a modern dataset for use as a baseline in comparisons with

archaeological material – we now have an idea of what faunal material is present on a site

shortly after abandonment today and, further, we now have a modern sample of more

than 350 teeth (with wear stages) and 1000 bones (with biometrical, pathological,

butchery and taphonomic data) to compare with archaeological samples. Alongside

building a faunal reference collection based on modern local material, we hope that this

will provide further insights into site use, stock management and any

improvements/introductions of livestock in the past. The following datasets have been

recorded for analyses on a recently abandoned winter campsite (Figure 8):

1) Spatial mapping of all non-organic artifacts.

2) Spatial mapping of faunal remains by quantity.

3) Spatial mapping of faunal remains by taxon.

4) Spatial mapping of faunal remains by presence of burning.

5) Spatial mapping of faunal remains by presence of butchery.

6) Age related (fusion stages, tooth wear, etc.) and biometric data for around 1000 limb bones and 350 teeth.
