1) Description of project and explanation of objective (conception and goals):

The project was initiated to support the Superpave Field Technician Certification Training

program and Annual Kansas Transportation Engineering Conference at Kansas State University

(KSU). The project was intended to support faculty and graduate students in conducting and

dissemination of research results especially those related to the MATC activities. One

undergraduate student intern was also supported to work in the KSU Office of Sustainability.

2) Description of the Actual Event/Activity/Program (approach and implementation):

The project was initiated primarily to support the Superpave Field Technician Certification

Training program and Annual Kansas Transportation Engineering Conference at Kansas State

University (KSU).

The Superpave Training program was intended to certify engineers, technicians, and other

personnel who will be involved in the construction of Superpave hot-mix asphalt (HMA)

pavements using Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) specifications in the State of

Kansas. Instruction was provided by a selected group of instructors from KDOT, the industry,

and KSU. Successful completion of the course and certification (subjected to a passing score on

a test given at the end of the course) was required for all KDOT and contractor personnel

performing tests on these projects. Three 4-day classes were held each year in 2013 and 2014 on

the KSU campus in Manhattan. One hundred engineers and technicians were trained and

certified during this period. Majority of the participants were from the paving contractors and

consultants. The Principle Investigator, Dr. Hossain was responsible for program development

and course material preparation. He also participated in instruction. He was assisted by one

graduate student and three undergraduate students. The class sessions were highly rated by the

participants.

KSU also hosts the Annual Kansas Transportation Engineering Conference, a 2-day event, in

Manhattan in the Spring (April). More than 500 participated in this conference each year.

Majority of the attendees were from KDOT.

3) Conclusion (results and benefits):

The project objectives were met well. The programs result in skill and professional development

of a large number of transportation professionals. The project also provided support to a number

of undergraduate and graduate students.
