1. Calcium Citrate is the best choice and is best absorbed on an empty stomach.

2. The recommended amount of calcium per day is 1200 mg. 1500 mg is recommended for menopausal women.

3. Calcium is best absorbed if taken in amounts of 500 mg or less several times per day.

4. More than 2000 mg of calcium per day is not recommended as it may increase the likelihood of developing kidney stones in those prone to them.

5. Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeleton in which the amount of calcium present in the bones slowly decreases to the point where bones become brittle and prone to fracture.

6. Osteoporosis affects almost ½ of all women over 50 and almost 90% of women over 75. This disorder also affects almost 30% of men over 50.

7. Calcium is needed for the heart, muscles, and nerves to function properly and for blood to clot.

8. Stick to brand names with proven reliability when choosing a calcium supplement. Check to be sure it dissolves quickly.

9. Low-fat and non-fat dairy products are good sources of calcium.

10. Vegetables such as broccoli and carrots as well as shrimp an salmon are good sources of calcium.
