New guidance to meet school cyber-bullying worries

The Welsh government has issued new guidelines on how to deal with cyber-bullying inschools. More and more youngsters are using smartphones and social networks. This adviceis aimed at protecting both teachers and pupils.Anna Brychan, director of head teachers’ union NAHT Cymru said: “It is getting harder andharder to monitor children’s interaction with each other because of the dizzying speed of

developments in new technologies and social networking sites. Children are almost alwaysquicker to catch on than the adults around them. Parents as well as schools need to developbetter antennae in dealing with this. Director of children’s charity Kidscape, Claude Knights, said cyber-bullying was affectingmore young people every day. She said: “This guidance is truly comprehensive as it exploresthe major forms of bullying in a practical manner.” She believes that a zero toleranceapproach to bullying in any form is important if we are serious about creating a safeenvironment for both pupils and staff. According to Knights, “Learning is most effective ina bully-free environment, and this new guidance provides sound building blocks for bully-proofing schools and other organisations.”

Case study of bullying from a head teacher

One of my staff members was recently the victim of cyber-bullying - some of the learnerscreated a website about them which contained nasty comments and accusations. As a directresult the member of staff suffered from depression and stress, and was actively planning toleave the school. I can honestly say that the episode nearly destroyed this man.

According to the Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, the new guidance should take intoaccount the advance in new technologies and the important role they play in the lives ofmost young people. He says that schools should understand how devices like smart phonesand accounts on digital media sites like Facebook and Twitter can be abused to bullyboth teachers and pupils. He also reminds us that we are living in the 21st Century wheretechnology is an important and ever-present part of our lives. And this is precisely why theguidelines are being published.

We might think that bullies are quite different from the victims of bullying. But those whobecome either a bully or a victim actually share similar outlooks and have similar difficultiesdealing with their environments. There is, however, one significant risk factor for bullying.

Researchers reviewed and analyzed 153 studies and found that both victims and bullieshave poor problem-solving skills within social situations. They also found that boys bully more

than girls but here’s a significant point: Those who do poorly in school are at a higher riskof becoming a bully. The research was published this week in the journal School PsychologyQuarterly.

Typical bullies have negative attitudes toward others, feel badly about themselves, andmost likely grew up in a home with conflict. Victims share much of same, negative attitude,conflict in the family. But the dividing characteristic: bullies disl ike school and tend to perform worse academicallythan those who later become victims.

Most current solutions try to enforce anti-bul lying rules or simply remove the bully from bullyingsituations. The authors note, however, that the most successful intervention is three-pronged.They suggest simultaneously targeting the areas that may be influencing the potential bullyor victim in the first place: the parents, the peers and the schools.
