FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

Did you know RENO & DECOR

the truth of CONVENIENCEMy husband and I were recently on holiday in Ireland.

We’d never been to the emerald isle and decided it

was time to check it off the bucket list.

We stayed in many places, one of which was a restored

15th-century feudal castle. The owners live on the first and

second floor and rent out the top two floors to travellers like

ourselves as a B&B.

We booked in for two nights and when I say castle, it is

really a tower, in this case a square one. It would have acted

as a stronghold for the landowners of this area. These towers

are dotted all over Ireland but few are restored and inhabited.

The owner welcomed us into the main floor, which

consisted of a large square kitchen. The English-style stove

was on and the room was cosy and warm with only a couple

of small arrow-slit windows for light. We’d read that visitors

were recommended to repack a small overnight bag as it was

impossible to carry large suitcases up to the guest suite. I

thought that was a fun detail but didn’t think much more of

it...until I saw the stairs.

When our host led us up to tour her second floor room and

I looked up the corridor of steep stone steps, the stark reality

started to set in. Each step was between 8 and 12 inches high

and the staircase got narrower as it went up. Each landing

had a nice square room behind a thick wooden door. We saw

her private bed and bath area and then advanced to the next

floor, which housed a ‘living space’ for guests.

My husband started to question how they managed to get

the sofas and tables up to the room as I huffed and puffed

my way behind, not daring to look back down. She explained

that everything had to be carried up in pieces and built or

assembled in the room. It was now time to go to the fourth

and final floor—our bedroom suite.

The staircase narrowed again. Bob carried our overnight

bag but I still had my purse and a tote bag (I’ve never been

known for packing light). There were no railings to hold onto

but the staircase was so narrow I could hear the plaster walls

brush my coat on either side. The stairs then turned into a

spiral with only a thick rope running up the middle to hold

onto. Were they serious?! Whose crazy idea was this??!

After two more straight flights we arrived at our room,

which was lovely; a vaulted ceiling, narrow leaded windows, a

bathtub in the open and a canopy bed. It was fit for a princess;

however, this princess was having trouble appreciating it as

she was suffering from exhaustion (my weekly yoga class and

daily dog walks did nothing to prepare me for this); a nasty

case of claustrophobia and a fear of heights that’s gotten

worse with age. How would I ever make it back down??!

There were 64 (high!) steps in all. Laying in bed that night,

I worried about what would happen if there was a fire in the

kitchen or if my snoring husband had a heart attack—we’d

never get down those stairs! I hated myself for being such a

ninny and so out of shape, and of such unadventurous spirit.

I also kicked myself for being so dependent on convenience—

a typical 21st-century wimp.

As we dressed for breakfast the next day I thought long

and hard about whether it was worth it to make the journey

back up and down the steps to brush my teeth—talk about a

princess! But come the second night when we got home

from the pub and I started up the stairs, I realized I had

gotten over the worst of my fears and, although my thigh

muscles were not happy, I was slowly becoming a little less

of a damsel in distress.

Driving away from the castle at the end of our stay, I noticed

a lovely hotel and remarked to hubby that if we ever came that

way again, maybe we’d stay there. Because, although I’m glad

to have had the experience of sleeping in a tower with my own

personal dungeon, and I truly wish I was a more brave, open

and adventurous soul, the truth is that I really like modern

conveniences (like elevators).

Dear Cobi Ladner,

It has been a very long time since I have had to go to the dictionary to check the meaning and verify the existence of a published word. But your delightful—and sensible—editorial in the February/March issue of RENO & DECOR sent me scampering to google the meaning of “sufficiently suffonsified” and I found not only that the word existed but that it is a Canadian colloquialism. Thank you!

NEWSWORTHY

In April, HGTV Canada launches Home to Win—its biggest, most interactive, multiplatform series yet. For the first time in the network’s history, 20 HGTV Canada stars, including Mike Holmes, Bryan Baeumler, Scott McGillivray and Sarah Richardson, will come together under one roof to buy an

average home and renovate it from top to bottom for one lucky Canadian.

By visiting HomeToWin.ca, Canadians can submit an audition video for the chance to compete for the ultimate home, which will be awarded during the Home to Win finale on June 26. To participate in

casting, Canadians must enter their email address on the website by June 5 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and follow the directions emailed to their inbox.

The 10-part series Home to Win will be hosted by ET Canada’s Sangita Patel. It premieres April 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada. hometowin.ca

Landscape professionals and interior design experts attended the first annual Outdoor Living Conference at the International Centre on February 3 and 4. “This conference addresses a huge, untapped market that is quickly becoming another important segment for designers and landscapers to focus on,” said Deborah Lalande, president of Bleu Venue Events and owner of the Outdoor Living Conference.

In association with SOFA (Source of Furniture + Accessories) and for the first time in North America, the conference provided a variety of informative seminars including CEU- accredited sessions on: outdoor kitchens, high-performance outdoor fabrics, landscaping lighting, working with landscape professionals, and other related topics.

Speakers at the two-day conference included HGTV host of Decked Out, Paul Lafrance, and Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association’s Denis Flanagan. This trade-only event established itself as a “must-attend” event for interior designers, interior decorators, landscape professionals, and outdoor product vendors. outdoorlivingconference.com

One of the many conveniences of the SMARTWALL® system is the patented “Micro Bevel” edge detail, which eliminates the traditional taping stage of finishing the drywall surface. The micro bevel requires much less filler to achieve a finished surface, resulting in far less sanding and therefore less dust created.

Unlike the multi-step process of conventional construction methods, DRIcore SMARTWALL® combines framing, insulation, drywall and a vapour barrier in one fast step. SMARTWALL® panels lock together using a tongue & groove system.

Just like the LBD is a must-have in every woman’s closet, did you know that black is also dressing up the kitchen? After years of

being blinded by the all-white kitchen, we are seeing a real emergence of this go-to colour. And this isn’t only for lovers of all things goth (unless you want that!), black pairs well with white,

wood and stainless steel. Whether you use it as a major feature like the backdrop on your walls, the cabinets and appliances, or in

smaller doses like kitchen accessories, no other colour adds instant drama and modernizes a space like black.

In 1955, the quiet corner of

Don Mills Road and Lawrence

Avenue East became home to

what was then a brand-spank-

ing-new retail concept—the

open-air mall.

Suburban families flocked to the

convenient little cluster of stores, which

included a Dominion grocery story, a

Koffler’s Drug Store (the forerunner of

Shoppers Drug Mart), a Brewer’s Retail

and a dozen or so other retailers. Consumers responded

enthusiastically—a decade later the number of shops had

swelled to 65 and included the first suburban Eaton’s.

In the ’70s, strip malls began to disappear—for lots of

reasons. By the ’80s, they were considered retail dinosaurs.

But the upscale Shops at Don Mills, which opened in April of

2009, has seen the concept re-invented in a thoughtfully

designed outdoor mall that includes high-end chain and

independent retailers, as well as spa, financial, dentistry and

optometry services.

Shoppers walk from store to store outdoors. Arguably, that’s

more pleasant in the temperate months than in the dead of

winter but, at any time of year, it’s a refreshing change from

the sometimes claustrophobic feel of power centres.

While the mix of retailers may be weighted toward fashion,

home decor retailers are beginning to emerge. Notably, there

are two Canadian chains with roots in Quebec that present

different—but distinctly beautiful—takes on design.

The newest location of Artemano opened last fall. Founded

in Quebec and now making its way across Canada, it special-

izes in contemporary exotic-wood furniture and decor.

Not only is the store a great spot to find unusual and

one-of-a-kind pieces, it’s an oasis of calm serenity, with soft

lighting and flickering tea lights casting shadows on lovely

room vignettes. Go often—stock changes frequently, and

there’s always something new to see. Keep your eye out for

Shops at Don Mills offers visitors

more than just a chance to spend

money. An outdoor rink and skate

permits and, in warmer months,

entertainment and fitness events

are held on its well-groomed green

DDramatically expanding our east-end

Toronto house was about more than

increasing floor space. The project also

allowed us to expand our horizons for

our dream kitchen.

So, when we took on a whole-home

renovation of our vintage detached

house in the Upper Beaches, we knew

the kitchen would become the focal

point that could and should define the

entire project. But how to begin?

The first kitchen designers we sat

down with were all talk and blather

about trends, “in” colours, and how to

quickly install a kitchen that would

provide a short-term “resale value.”

But we were not interested in being

trendy, nor were we planning to flip

the house.

We wanted a timeless kitchen: one

that would reflect our personalities

and serve our needs for years to

come—yet still honour the heritage

of our 1923 house. We also wanted a

kitchen that would provide a showcase

for our collections of kitchen antiques

while creating a warm and welcoming

space to cook and to receive family

and friends.

DESIGNER SYMPATICOThen we found Chestnut Grove

Cabinetry and Design. President and

designer Franco Giampietro began our

first meeting with the pivotal question

that clinched the deal:

“Can you tell me about yourselves

and how you would want to use the

kitchen?” he asked over espresso

and pastries. We were sitting in the

comfort of Chestnut Grove’s easily

accessible design and millwork studio

in Concord, just on the edge of Toronto.

What followed was a creative journey

of collaboration that resulted in our

dream Art Deco kitchen.

COVER STORY

Through conversation, Franco learned

about both of us as individuals and as a

married couple. We love to cook, we love

to entertain, and we love to express

ourselves through our collections of

antique glass and dinnerware. Franco

used this information about who we are

and what we love to inspire his unique,

personalized design.

“The difference between Chestnut

Grove and routine kitchen places is

that we’re not simply a kitchen place,”

Franco says. “We’re a design studio.

And design is critical in a kitchen,

which is one of the most important

environments in your home. It is where

friends and family gather and where

you entertain. So it is a representation

of who you are. It tells a lot about you.

“I look at my designs as a way of

telling a story about the individuals

involved. That’s why I say our creations

at Chestnut Grove go beyond the

custom-made. Our creations are tailored

to you. Most shops can make some-

thing that is ‘custom’ for their clients,

but really the inspiration for it is often

just a clone of something that they saw

in a magazine. It did not arise from the

lives of the people who will live in the

house. Our creations do.”

COLLECTION-INSPIREDFranco’s first inspiration sparked when

Bruce enthused about his collection of

Mauviel copper cooking pots from

France. Acquired over years of travel to

the Cannes Film Festival, Franco

recognized that this collection would

become a centrepiece for the kitchen,

with the hanging pots gathered around

the gas range. Further discussions led

to Art Deco, with design touches that

would be perfect for the copper and iron

of the pots and for the age of the house.

Rachel’s beloved collection of

jadeite—green-glass dinnerware dating

from the 1930s through the 1950s—pro-

vided another spark. The jadeite needed

a home in the new kitchen, somewhere

to be safely displayed while dazzling the

eye and providing a splash of vivid

colour to a kitchen that would otherwise

be creamy whites, burnished blacks and

vintage metal hues. Franco designed an

open-display shelf above the apron sink.

Combined with the glass-fronted, LED-

illuminated upper cabinets that would

house the best among our pressed glass

goblets from the 1800s, Franco’s design

would literally allow our personalities

to be on display.

Subtle Art Deco features abound

throughout, from the wood molding

around our gas range and our cast-iron

Kohler sink, to the triple-step crown in

the pass-through from kitchen to dining

room, to the inset display cabinet in one

wall where Bruce keeps his collection

of antique bar items. Plus, the same

architectural feature is picked up in the

splendid archway between the living

and dining rooms.

A SYMPHONY OF COLOUR, FIXTURES AND FINISHESIn the kitchen, coconut-coloured upper

cabinets with vintage-style glass pulls

transition to dark artfully distressed

lower cabinets. The countertops are

topped by soft white Caesarstone with

subtle swirls of grey in the quartz.

A large island with its own Kohler

bar sink and a large serving area adds

both to the look and utility of the

kitchen. It instantly became an ideal

place to receive guests, with room for a

charcuterie board and appetizers while

ABOVE: The heavy duty Boos Block makes an ideal prep centre and keeps the main island free for guests to gather and mingle

people sample cocktails.

Friends and family

freely gather around this

welcoming space, yet the

design leaves plenty of

preparation space in the work

areas to prepare dinner or to shake

another cocktail. Critically, nothing

is crammed in, especially not in front

of the Bosch gas range and built-in

wall oven and microwave from

Appliance Canada.

Because the kitchen workspace is

so open, there is also room for a Boos

Block from Total Tabletop Plus in

Mississauga. This high-quality butch-

er’s block becomes a convenient and

attractive chopping and assembly

station, while the rich wood-cutting

surface, jet-black body, and copper

touches make it a perfect fit with the

rest of the Art Deco design.

Franco and his team members were

involved in every aspect. Franco even

made himself available to give expert

advice on light fixtures,

faucets and other

touches to ensure that

every piece of the kitchen

puzzle fit and was true to

the Art Deco design.

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCEThe final flourish was also a Franco

contribution—a tailored, one-of-a-kind,

Art Deco range hood cover. The design

was inspired by Bruce’s trips to

Manhattan, where he admired the Art

Deco art above the door of 181 Madison

Avenue, the Madison Belmont Building

and New York’s first Art Deco structure.

Franco and his team, Cassandra

Brandow and Henry Sanchez, replicat-

ed the iron-work design for our range

hood cover, deftly bending the design

around the sides. Finished in copper

automotive paint, the piece perfectly

complements the nearby Mauviel pots

hanging from custom-made display

bars. “The range hood cover is a prime

example of what we call a tailored

piece,” says Franco. “Everything that

we did with it is literally tailored to an

individual’s personality—and it also

becomes a piece of art. It’s a cen-

trepiece that the customer ends up

sharing with visitors. It’s more than

just a focal point. Some designers

might do an accent wall or display

an object and call that a focal feature.

But this approach is very personal. It’s

meant to represent your experiences in

life and the things you’re attracted to.”

In the end, thanks to an extraordi-

narily easy, productive collaboration,

our entire Art Deco kitchen is now

tailored specifically to our lives, our

loves and our personalities.

Finished in copper automotive paint, the range hood perfectly complements the nearby Mauviel pots hanging from custom-made display bars.

No singular design style or upscale feature qualifies as luxurious.

But one thing is for certain, the price of a luxury kitchen is in the area

of at least $100,000. And take note that appliances can be 35 per cent

of the budget.

If you’re considering a high-end renovation, have a look at this checklist for

suggestions on where to allocate the budget.◆ Large islands

◆ Granite or quartz countertops

◆ Custom cabinets that extend to the ceiling

◆ Hardwood, stone or premium tile flooring

◆ Multiple lighting applications (decorative, under-counter, general)

◆ Stone, glass or premium tile backsplashes

◆ High-end appliances, such as: Miele, Thermador, Wolf, Sub-Zero, Fisher & Paykel

◆ Large counter-depth refrigerators and multiple ovens and dishwashers

◆ Eat-in seating areas at an island or an integrated breakfast section

◆ Glass-faced cabinets or custom-designed doors

◆ Multiple faucets: sink, bar, filtered water, instant hot water. A pull-down sprayer is a must-have for the serious chef

◆ Extra-large gas cooktops with grilles remain popular, accompanied by industrial-style hoods

◆ Alternately, modern-styled kitchens may have sleek induction cooktops with minimally visible hoods

e love our kitchens more than ever, but the days of the kitchen space

being disconnected from the rest of the home is passé. Today, as the

central hub of the home, kitchens serve multiple functions: entertain-

ment zone, meeting point, testing ground for new recipes, study area.

The list is unique to each family’s particular needs and habits.

It was several years of conceptual planning and discussions before the home-

owners finally took the plunge to remodel their ranch-inspired home. The kitchen

had long been the primary talking point because the space wasn’t large enough

for a family of five. A huge island and a large eating area were top priority.

DESIGNER TIPS

ATYPICAL HOMEOWNERAfter carefully examining the floor plan,

we decided that a few structural

changes would be imperative to

creating a spacious kitchen.

The woman of the household loves

all things unique—from specialty

finishes, exclusive materials and the

use of uncommon colours. Her

profound appreciation of a worldly

esthetic is what I loved about

designing this kitchen.

Therefore, the classic white kitchen

with Calacutta countertops would not

be a contender here. Instead, there’s

a variety of eye-catching focal points

and functional spaces. With a family

of foodies and avid cooks, the oven and

a large prep area were paramount.

The essentials and luxuries were

compartmentalized in the 420-square-

foot space by creating a serving area, a

dramatic cooking zone with a monster

hood, a spacious island, a bar area with

its own sink and fridge, and enough

cabinetry to house all the dishes and

gadgets. With some innovative hinges,

an appliance corner was designed to

shut the door on all those toasters and

blenders.

It’s important to house all your

kitchen gadgets out of sight, freeing

up premium countertop space.

Because the eat-in area was essen-

tial to the design of the kitchen, I

created functional space with a built-in

bar and seating. One of my favourite

features is the bench. A casual piece of

furniture in a kitchen brings an element

of comfort and breaks up the monoto-

nous look of chairs.

The natural marble backsplash is set in a herringbone pattern behind the stove to add some contrast.

Bookmatching the Cascogne Verde stone creates a unique heart shape.

It’s important to house al l your kitchen gadgets out of sight, freeing

up premium countertop space.

OLD MEETS NEWWalnut is an architectural classic finish,

reminiscent of the mid-20th century;

nothing is more iconic and striking

than this modernist material. Merging

this modern element complements the

classic detailing of the painted cabinets

and demonstrates how a variety of

styles and finishes can work together

in perfect harmony.

One of my favourite features in this

space is the built-in fridge, which is

elegantly encased in an Asian-inspired

armoire. The mix of hardware also gives

the kitchen an edge of its own. Not

shying away from mixing metals,

hammered metal knobs and cup pulls

were blended with oil-rubbed bronze

hardware and a custom-designed

handle for the fridge cabinet. Mixing

hardware creates a sense of interest

and allows you to pick a few favourites

instead of just one.

In this kitchen, all drawers were

designed to have a simple beaded edge,

and all doors were detailed as a version

of the classic shaker profile. Mixing

cabinet styles adds diversity and texture.

This kitchen is not modern, not

classic, nor is it retro; it’s simply a

refreshing design that appeals to

today’s busy family, incorporating an

esthetic from different period styles.

SUBTLE & SUBLIMEOn the prowl for something unusual,

my upholsterer showed me a few

leftover hides from an eggplant-

coloured croc skin. I knew it was the

perfect choice for the space; infusing

a little bit of the unexpected makes

for a lasting impression.

The classically styled custom bench

was paired with a modern pedestal

table and quintessential Eames chairs

in robin’s egg blue, while the series of

white, dramatic modern light fixtures

and the clear Louis Ghost chairs

contrast perfectly with the classic

powder-grey shaker cabinets.

One of the standout elements in

this kitchen is the exclusive Cascogne

Verde stone on the kitchen island. Its

mesmerizing blue tones and golden-

brown accents complement the kitchen

finishes so eloquently, the book-

matching even results in a heart-shape

to affirm its approval of love.

Mixing hardware creates a sense of interest and al lows you to pick a few favourites instead of just one.

OLD STYLING with a new flair

RENO & DECOR ADVERTISING FEATURE

BLANCO, one of the world’s leaders in kitchen

technology, has done it again by introducing new

innovative products that are both artful and functional.

Their newest innovation—an apron-front sink, also

known as a farmhouse sink—adds an architectural

element to any kitchen. The sink is made of natural

granite composite, SILGRANIT material, and is

available in three popular colours: Anthracite, Café

and White.

“The BLANCO IKON™ truly reflects our

commitment to innovation in the kitchen,” says

BLANCO’s Senior Marketing Manager, Edyta Drutis.

“We are very excited about this collection. It allows us

to offer a wide array of materials in apron-front styles,

from stainless steel to ceramic, fireclay and now

SILGRANIT options. We’re even more thrilled that this

collection is manufactured right here in Canada.”

The IKON will not scratch or stain, will maintain its

beauty for many years, and is both extremely hard-

wearing and exceptionally easy to clean.

“The sink area is often the hardest working space

in the kitchen, and apron-front sinks experience even

more contact than traditional undermounts. However,

homeowners love the matchless style of the apron-

front design. Now, there is a durable, beautiful

alternative to the ceramic, stainless steel or copper

materials that are most commonly used for apron-front

sinks,” says Drutis.

ARTISTIC FLAIR AND FUNCTION WITH AWARD-WINNING EUROPEAN DESIGNBLANCO style continues with the pairing of matching

SILGRANIT-embellished faucets from their new

URBENA and ARTONA Faucet Collections. Both lines

offer sought-after features like a highly arched spout

that makes filling pots and vases effortless, a pull-

down hidden spray-head activated by an almost

invisible control button and an ergonomically angled

faucet handle that controls the water-flow easily.

Both lines are available in nine finishes, including

chrome, stainless finish, and seven dual finishes that

perfectly match BLANCO SILGRANIT® kitchen sinks,

giving homeowners, the ultimate blend of function

and design.

ou may recall the lyrics from this

classic childhood tune: “The knee

bone’s connected to the thigh

bone, the thigh bone’s connected to the

hip bone”… and on it goes. Occasionally,

a client will request what they commonly

refer to as a “better kitchen” but they

soon realize the proverbial kitchen bone’s

connected to the family room bone.

In all seriousness, that is just what

happened when we started working

with this family—a professional couple

with two small kids—who wanted to

improve their kitchen but soon realized

the best way to fix the kitchen was to

renovate the entire main floor. What

they really needed was a kitchen that

had a dedicated kitchen table and a

natural flow to connect it to the family

room where the kids would play.

It's all C NNECTED

NOT JUST FOR KIDSAs hip young parents, they most

certainly didn’t want to give up their

social life completely. Occasionally,

young parents can turn the entire house

into an oversized playpen; this wasn’t

the case here. Along with the family

kitchen, they wanted to have an adult

area in the living room and a proper

space to entertain their friends and

family once the kids had gone off to bed.

High on their wish list was also the

ability to have an open-concept living

space. Like most things, everything was

possible with some modifications to

both the wish list and the main-floor

floor plan.

We settled on archways from one

space to the next, which provided the

sense of an open concept and individual

rooms. In line with the classic tune, one

thing led to another and we determined

we also needed to revise the powder

room, back entrance, family room, dining

room, and flooring. Or, more easily said:

Everything on the main floor. Talk about

connecting all the bones!

The front entranceway was renovat-

ed to provide a front hall closet that

mimicks a piece of furniture. This is

now a sophisticated space where

guests are welcomed into the home.

Alternately, the family uses the back

door and garage entrance, leaving the

main entry uncluttered.

The living room was refurnished to

create a conversation circle for adult

entertaining. Through the next arch is

the dining room, with a large new

round table and six chairs for those

grown-up or special occasion meals.

The curve of the table, placed under a

simple chandelier, allows for a passage-

way through the next arch into the

kitchen and family eating area.

CUSTOM KITCHENThe homeowners wanted the kitchen

to feel modern and sleek but to also be

highly functional. With the black frame

around the cabinets to follow the line

of the baseboards and trim, we selected

a flat-panel door in a warm grey along

with gold hardware. The kitchen was

going to be part of the decor of the

house and needed to be modern

enough to suit the client and the

architecture.

We selected a suite of Jenn-Air

appliances, including an icemaker,

wine fridge, steam oven, stove and

coffee maker to provide a highly

functional family kitchen. The panel-

receiving fridge and dishwasher offered

a full focus on the gas cook top, which

should be the centre of the kitchen.

The island made perfect sense to

increase the counter space and to

house the sink, as well as provide a

space for family to sit, have a snack

or help with the cooking. We placed

a fantastic fixture above the island

and chose not to have a fixture at the

kitchen table. Instead, we wallpapered

the ceiling in that coffered area to

warm and ground the space.

We also placed a wet bar in the

kitchen area with a sink, the icemaker

and full-height wine fridge. The end

result is a kitchen that can absolutely

double as a bar for adult evenings.

RECONFIGURING THE SPACEThe eating area wet wall had been

shared with the powder room, so the

powder room was placed at the end

of the mudroom by the back door.

Kids typically need the bathroom the

second they get home.

The mudroom was fitted with

cabinets and benches to facilitate

the storing of boots, coats, hats and

months, “the ankle bone was recon-

nected to the shin bone,” and the

whole body of the house was in better

working order for this family.

sportswear. A pocket door allows them

to hide the mudroom from the family

room when they want to.

The fireplace, which had been on the

same wall as the powder room, was

moved to the opposite wall. Now the

focal point in the family room is the

television, along with the fireplace. The

sectional sofa creates a casual feeling

in this space, which was designed to be

open to the kitchen to create a great-

room feeling, perfectly suited to the

young professional family.

ne of the biggest dilemmas when trying to redo your kitchen is the choice for flooring. Design magazines will

show kitchen after kitchen featuring beautiful hardwood floors. Designers will tell you that wood floors look fresh, warm and modern. But looks aren’t everything. How is one to really decide whether hardwood flooring is the right choice for the kitchen? We are going to break it down for you.

When it comes to choosing flooring, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first thing is the amount of traffic that your room is going to have. Traditionally speaking kitchens have always been one of the high traffic areas in a home. These days, with the open concept homes that will flow from the kitchen to the dinning and family rooms, we are even using our kitchens for entertaining. Keeping that in mind, how do hardwood floors fair when it comes to traffic? The simple answer is rather well actually. Pre-finished hardwood floors, whether solid or engineered, have strong finishes applied to them that are more often than not UV cured, which makes them much more resistant to wear and tear. Good manufacturers of hardwood flooring products, such as Lauzon, manufacture their flooring to withstand a high level of traffic for a long period of time. So when it comes to traffic levels, hardwood floors will be right at home in your kitchen.

The second consideration is wear and tear. You drop more things in the kitchen, spill

more, and in general you have a higher rate of wear and tear in your kitchen than other rooms of the house. This is where your choice of specie and finish will help you in the long run. When it comes to species, harder domestic species with a grain pattern such as oak and ash will do better than the softer species such as silver maple. These species are more resistant to denting under pressure. They also have grain, which can be used to create wirebrushed floors. Wirebrushing the hardwood will create a textured floor that will only get more character as it gets worn. Since it is not a smooth surface to begin with, it will show less imperfections and the matte finish that accompanies all wirebrushed flooring will also help minimize the visibility of those imperfections. Hard Maple floors may be harder than oak or ash ones but they are usually not wirebrushed. They can be distressed which will have somewhat of the same effect as wirebrushing. The rule of thumb is if you are concerned about nicks and dents, then choose a textured floor with a low sheen level.

The third concern about hardwood flooring in the kitchen is exposure to water. This is the biggest reason some people shy away from hardwood floors in kitchens. There are two kinds of water concerns when it comes to the kitchen. The first is the fact that during cooking and cleaning there will be water droplets that will fall on the floor. This is especially of concern around the sink and the dishwasher areas. Most consumers are concerned that these water

droplets will cause damage to the flooring. The answer to this concern is simple. Most pre-finished hardwood floors have a higher tolerance for water than most people think. A few droplets will not kill your floors. There are even hardwood floor finishes, such as Lauzon’s Pure Genius Finish that are water repellant. However it is always a good idea to place a small matt under your sink and the dishwasher so that these rogue droplets will land on these placemats rather than on the floor. The other concern is washing your floors with a mop and soapy water. This is definitely going to be a big no no on hardwood floors. These days hardwood flooring cleaners have come a long way. They clean and disinfect just as well as, if not better than, soap and water. So using a microfiber mop and a good floor cleaner will get your kitchen floors just as clean as Mr. Clean would.

So if you want to jump on this bandwagon, which takes hardwood throughout the entire main floor including the kitchen, then fear not. Your floors will hold up just fine. Use a hard domestic floor, with high levels of variation, or a more uniform floor with a textured finish and you will be happy and on trend. If you have any questions or concerns contact us at M2 Flooring and Design Centre and we will help you make the best decision for your home and family.

DECOR TIPS

a fter 10 years in this house, the homeowner

hadn’t touched a single room. The decor was

dated and the inexpensive builder-grade

finishes were not holding up, esthetically or otherwise.

Lisa, the homeowner, is a single mother of two and

a professional with a very hectic work schedule. She

craved an orderly feminine corner of the house that

was all her own.

The living room had been used as a storage hub for

an old piano, desk and storage boxes that never got

unpacked. It was certainly time to adopt a fresh decor

to make this room an integral part of Lisa’s home.

FAQSBefore starting a project like this, it is important

to understand the client's lifestyle and their family

dynamic in order to tailor the design specifically to

everyone's needs. Based on the answers to the

questions below, a style and concept will present itself.

• What hours do you work?

• Do you have kids?

• Are there any pets?

• How many people are in the family?

• Do you entertain?

• How would you describe your style?

• Do you like your home to look lived-in?

For Lisa, it was clear that an elegant retreat with

luxe furnishings and fabrics was the direction to take.

There are unlimited fabrics and furniture options

available, so my role is to filter through the variables

and make selections that speak to the client’s style, use

of the space, and take into consideration the budget.

FABRICS AND FIXTURESSince this room was intended to be a kid-free zone

where Lisa could relax with a good novel after a

stressful day at work, a collection of fabrics —silks,

satin and gauzy sheers —were chosen for the drapery

panels. The fabrics help to underscore the casually

elegant yet comfortable atmosphere.

To prevent decor from looking dated too quickly,

a monochromatic neutral, quiet colour scheme will

create a timeless ambience. Whereas monochromatic

rooms instantly captivate, they can also look dull and

lifeless if there is little interest in the space. That’s why

lighting is very important to soften the look and create

a cosy atmosphere.

Quiet neutrals can add sophistication and longevity to interior design

Several forms of light are the key to any good design.

Pot lights highlight artwork and provide overall light in

the room. Incandescent lighting from lamps offers a

softer light. Accent lighting, like the glass-front

cabinets in the built-in cabinetry, and candlelight,

provide a lovely glow.

For optimum flexibility, it's a good idea to put lights

on their own switch and on dimmers. It allows you to

control the lights, with some on and some off as needed.

A small hit of colour in a monochromatic room

creates interest, like the unexpected silk chartreuse

toss cushions. I love rooms that can be easily altered

just by changing toss cushions or adding a throw over

a chair in a trending or seasonal colour.

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGEWhen designing a room, I like to treat it very much like

a theatre production: there is the star of the show, the

accompanying role, and the rest of the cast. It can take

some time to assemble just the right materials and

design elements to capture the look.

The star of this show is the custom wool-silk area

carpet, along with the large-scale artwork. The built-ins

are the supporting role and the furniture and fabrics are

the cast. All of the elements in this space offer a

pleasingly graceful atmosphere.

Lisa really enjoys the room and is thrilled with the

way it looks. It proves how much our environment truly

affects us and how a stress-free space can become a

retreat from the overload of everyday life.

With each client, I ensure my designs look different

from one to the next. No two clients are alike, they’re

different people, so their rooms should look different too,

as a reflection of their personal style.

A home’s fundamental purpose is to provide shelter, security and privacy for its

inhabitants. But there’s nothing “private” about the message a home’s exterior gives to

passersby. From façade to landscaping, the home’s exterior appearance informs friends

and neighbours of our taste, style and orderliness. Give your home something to brag

about by increasing its curb appeal with these simple suggestions.

R+Ddecor expert

KIMBERLEY SELDON

Front Door ESSENTIALSK I M B E R L EY ’ S GU I D E T O

THE DOORReplace a dull or uninteresting front

door with a more stylish version. The

addition of sidelights (windows at the

side of door) or a transom (window

above the door) permits light to filter

into the entranceway. If you love your

front door make sure to paint or stain

it frequently; every four to six years,

depending on wear and quality of the

paint job. Flaking, chipped or tired

paint destroys a façade’s neat appear-

ance. Make sure to mount architectur-

ally appropriate hardware to the front

door. Specialty hardware stores can

suggest suitable options for door-

knockers, latch sets and mailboxes.

WINDOWSEnhance the presence of small

windows with the addition of shutters

or window boxes. To ensure pleasing

proportions, select shutters wide

enough to shut fully over windows.

A window box looks best when it’s

slightly wider than the windowsill it

rests beneath. Make sure to consider

plants that will bloom with little or

no care.

ACCESSORIES AND LIGHTINGEmphasize a façade’s symmetry by

flanking the front door with wrought

or cast-iron garden urns filled with

seasonal flowers or greenery. It might

be an affordable choice to hire a

landscaping company to modify the

urns seasonally. Select a front-door

mat that’s as large as possible to give

the most gracious impression. For

safety, create a flexible lighting plan

to illuminate pathways leading to the

front door. Consider the merits of

decorative lighting such as uplights

to draw attention to ornamental

bushes or trees.

Finally, make it easy for guests (and

heaven forbid, emergency crews) to

find your home. Install a large address

plaque in a prominent, well-lit

location near the front door.

GREEN • Complement the ruddy appearance of a brick façade with deep, rich green. Darkest green is ideal for more formal exteriors such as Georgian, Federal or Neo-Classical styles. Mid-tone greens suit more casual homes, ranch-style bungalows and clapboard cottages.

BLUE • Mid-tone blues are well suited to pink-hued brick or stone. With its grey undertones, Wedgewood works beautifully paired with a charcoal roof.

RED • As with interiors, red makes a striking impression. A bold red front door suits Colonial architecture with its clapboard siding and simple woodwork. It’s also an excellent choice for front doors situated to the side of the home as its weight helps to restore balance to the façade. Dark plum (red with blue influences) is an elegant choice beside fine-looking stonework.

BLACK • Strike a formal pose with deep black for classically influenced exteriors (those featuring Greek or Roman elements such as columns and entablature). Black is the single, most formal colour choice available for front doors.

BROWN • Enrich a handsome Tudor façade in sombre tones of brown or dark tan. While dark brown has the architectural weight of black, it works better with less formal façades such as cottage and country styles.

Near the completion of an extensive renovation to a 1920s north

Toronto home, I had a heated debate with the homeowners

over whether to paint or not to paint their kitchen cabinets.

Since the kitchen was in fairly good shape, we decided to just

do a little “cosmetic job.” By cosmetic, I meant fresh coats of paint,

updated hardware, etc., or so I thought. When I showed them the

colour I had planned for the cabinets, a beautiful dove grey, they said:

“Wait, we’re painting the cabinets?”

In an effort to save funds, they expected we’d leave the cabinets

alone and just do the walls; they thought the cabinets were fine and

of a good quality. True, the cabinets were “fine and good” but, in my

SOFT SPOT FOR HARDWAREEarly in my career, I had a wonderful client who was obsessed with

hardware. Besides teaching me a lot, she subsequently imparted her

passion for knobs and hinges to me. Beyond its practical assistance,

hardware can be the best accessory a kitchen can have.

Buy the best quality hardware and be sure to try it on. Try holding it

in your hand to see how it feels. Is it too tight? Too light? Does it feel

cheap? It’s like trying on a pair of shoes; hardware has to fit to work

and look beautiful.

When considering an update to your kitchen, you don’t always have

to reach for the hammer. Try the paintbrush and the screwdriver first.

Adding colour to your cabinetry and a few other bits and pieces can

completely enliven a tired kitchen and give it that wow-factor that

makes a world of difference.

opinion, they were a little dated colour-wise. At our design firm,

we don’t like to do just “fine,” when we can do “wow!”

I explained to the homeowners that having worked on tons of

kitchens, the quickest way to update a kitchen, at a very low cost,

is with paint and accessories. Painting cabinets and replacing the

hardware can completely transform a kitchen and doesn’t cost a

fortune. There are a few things to consider though when updating

cupboards.

COLOUR IS YOUR FRIENDWhen designing a kitchen, I like it to be approachable, functional and

playful. Gone are the days of just all-brown or all-white cabinets,

although all-white can work in very contemporary or very traditional

kitchens.

I like to paint the majority of the cabinetry in one colour then use

an accent colour on an island, pantry door, counter stools or the

interior of cabinets. For example, a previous client's cupboards and

island were painted in the same striking shade of blue, the kitchen was

accented with great art, and counter stools were covered in vintage-

orange leather. The result was stylish with a “rad-trad” mix…very chic.

For another homeowner’s project, which was a very large and

light-filled family kitchen, I used a silvery-grey colour on the bulk of

the cabinets and a very strong bright white on the island and range

hood. The contrast provides tension and when mixed with Carrera

marble, the counters and backsplash become extremely elegant.

TIPS:

When it comes to choosing colours for your cabinets, it is best to err on the side of classic colours such as blues, whites, blacks, greys and creams

A strong look for kitchen cabinets is mixing light and dark colours. It all depends on your space and look but generally for a more balanced feel, choose a light colour for uppers and a darker colour for the bottom cabinets

I look forward to hearing from you and welcome your feedback. Do you have a reno or decor question for our team

of experts? Email [email protected]

We’ve all heard the old saying that an ounce of

prevention is worth a pound of cure. Well, the

concept applies to home maintenance as well.

If you don’t spend a bit of time maintaining the various

materials and mechanical systems that make your home

comfortable, you’ll likely face costly repair and replacement

bills down the road.

On the following pages, I’ll take you on a tour around the

outside of your home to make a list of repair items to take

care of this spring. But first, I wanted to remind you of some

of the things you should be taking care of on a regular basis.

YEAR-ROUND UPKEEPYour furnace is key to overall comfort in the cold months

and having it professionally serviced is essential to keep it

running when you need it. As a homeowner, you should

also know how frequently the manufacturer recommends

changing the filter, and do so at least that often. Make a

note in your calendar to check once a month and replace

it if you notice it starting to clog.

If you have central air conditioning, you’ll want to monitor

the filter over the summer months as well, and replace as

needed. Note that if you’re undergoing renovation work,

JIM CARUK RENOVATION EDITOR

you’ll want to change it even more frequently as things like

sawdust and drywall dust will quickly clog a filter.

If your home is heated by a boiler, your main tasks are to

make sure the rads are periodically bled by opening the

valve on each to release any air, and making sure that

furniture and drapes aren’t blocking the heat from radiating

out into the room.

SPRING CHECKLIST Of course, nothing could be more catastrophic than having

your house burn down. That’s why you need to test your

smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly, and

regularly change the backup batteries. (The fire department

recommends changing them when Daylight Saving Time

starts and ends.) You should also test the GFCI electrical

outlets in your kitchen and bathrooms to make sure they’re

working properly.

One of the potential repairs I mention in “Exterior

Maintenance” (see page 68) is sagging eavestroughs. The

best way to prevent this problem is to make sure they’re

regularly cleaned up to remove leaves and other debris.

Of course, every house is different. I have a pool so I have

regular filter cleanings, chlorine additions, and seasonal

opening and closing tasks to consider.

So do yourself a favour and take some time to sit down

and record all the maintenance tasks you need to stay on top

of, and put that list somewhere where it stays top of mind.

Inspect the outside of your home to build a reno and repair to-do list BY JIM CARUK

Now that spring has (finally)

sprung, it’s time to head out-

doors and inspect the damage

that winter has done to your house.

Some of the repairs can be handled by

a competent DIYer, while others will

require some professional help.

LOOK UP, WAY UPYou’re going to want to start at the top

with the roof. If you’re not comfortable

climbing ladders, just get your hands

on a pair of binoculars and take them

outside with you. From a spot across

the road and from your yard where you

can get a clear view of the roofline,

scan your roof from chimney to eaves.

Make sure there’s a cap in place at the

top of your chimney, and all the bricks

seem solid and mortared in. Look for any

shingles that are missing or that have

edges starting to curl up. If more than a

couple are missing or damaged, call in a

pro for repair or replacement advice. And

keep in mind that if you go with a metal

roof, you’ll never have to replace it again.

(See Jim’s Pick on page 66.)

CLEAR THE WAYNext, follow the line of the eavestrough

across your house. Is there any debris

clogging it? (Saplings growing in the

leaf mulch are a good indicator you’ve

left it too long!) You also want to watch

for any sagging sections or pieces

that are pulling away from the house.

If you do try to reattach any loose parts

yourself, make sure you maintain a

gentle downward slope towards the

downspout.

Now follow the downspout to ground

level. Is it still connected to the storm

pipe? If so, you’re going to want to

disconnect and cap those. Otherwise

you’ll have a basement-flooding

situation just waiting to happen.

Extending the outflow portion of the

downspout far away from the founda-

tion walls is potentially the biggest

bang you can get for your DIY buck. If

the water is able to run down against

the foundation, all it takes is a few

mid-winter freeze-thaw cycles to devel-

op serious problems. Most DIYers

should be able to take care of this job

with parts you can find at your local

building supply centre. Don’t forget to

cap off the hole leading to the drain.

TROUBLE SPOTSNext, cast your eyes on the exterior of

each of your four walls (or at least as

many as you can walk around and have

a look at). Inspect the condition of the

bricks and mortar around them. If a lot

of mortar is missing or can easily be

flaked away, you probably need some

tuck-point repair work. A lot of home-

owners think that tuck-pointing is a

DIY job, but it’s usually not. You can

usually tell the DIY tuck-pointing jobs.

If you have siding, you’ll be looking

for wood rot or, with vinyl and alumi-

num cladding, broken or missing pieces

that will allow moisture to get in

behind to the interior.

Take a close look around the perime-

ter of all your windows and exterior

doors. You’re looking for signs of rot in

wood-frames, gaps in the caulking

around the frame, and missing or

damaged weatherstripping. For second-

floor windows, you might want to

inspect the sills and exterior caulking

from the inside.

WINDOWS AND DOORSGive all the door hinges a drop of

lubricant. If you have vinyl windows

that slide horizontally, a squirt in the

track will help them move smoother.

Do the same thing for patio doors or if

you have a retractable screen door.

If your aluminum screen door doesn’t

close properly, it could be that the

pump needs to be adjusted. There’s a

little screw on the end of the pump that

you can use to increase or decrease

the tension. If you search on YouTube,

there are a number of videos showing

you how to do that.

ALL HANDS ON DECKIf you have a deck, you’ll want to walk

along all the boards, feeling for any that

are loose or spongy. If it’s one or two

boards, a reasonably handy person

could replace those. But if there are

signs of decay over large areas, it may

be time to think about replacing the

deck. Pay careful attention to railings

and stairways. You don’t want anything

to be wobbly there. If you do need to

replace any screws or other hardware,

if the deck framing is pressure-treated,

make sure you use approved fasteners,

otherwise they will corrode over time,

leaving you another task on a future

spring cleaning to-do list.

First Bud of SpringA bountiful garden is the result of proper preparation

To achieve the great garden you

dreamt of through the winter,

my number one tip is prepare

your soil well.

SOIL PREP Ninety per cent of the success in the

garden is the result of good soil prep.

Your soil should be loose and friable

with the ability to drain freely. Other-

wise, I recommend that you add

generous quantities of organic compost.

By generous quantities I suggest

adding four to six centimetres (two to

three inches) of compost or triple mix

to the surface of your garden beds.

Healthy, fertile soil results in vibrant

blooms, verdant foliage and abundant

fruits and vegetables, and eliminates

the need for pesticides and synthetic

fertilizers. Well-fed soil breeds strong,

disease-tolerant plants. Insects are

less prone to feed on healthy plants as

the natural defenses of the plant are

working at their optimum. LAWN CARE Raise your lawn mower cutting height

to five to seven centimetres (two to

three inches). Longer grass has deeper

roots. It also controls weeds by

crowding them out, and protects grass

roots from drying out. The best method

of growing a healthy, weed-free lawn

is a thick, healthy grass that shades

out weeds and crabgrass, eliminating

the need for herbicides.

1 Use a spring-tined rake to remove

any debris, dead grass, leaves, etc.

from the lawn. Add these to your

compost pile.

2 Spread a two-to-four centimetre

layer of triple mix over the lawn,

concentrating on depressions and thin

areas. Sow a quality grass seed at a

rate of one kilogram for every 80m².

I cannot emphasize enough the need

to buy good quality seed… the

contents in the bag represent the

future pedigree of your lawn.

3 Keep the area watered and evenly

moist until the grass seed germinates.

4 If your lawn is in good shape, simply

repair any bare spots and fertilize with

a quality lawn fertilizer with slow

release nitrogen and chelated iron.

I recommend Golfgreen Iron plus: the

most sophisticated formula in the

business. This will last for up to 10

weeks—no need to repeat application

until late spring or early summer.

Repeat application three or four times

this season for best results.

WATER CONSERVATION I encourage you to think of ways

to reduce your water consumption.

Saving water is not only the environ-

mentally responsible thing to do, it

saves you time and allows you to

enjoy more time away from the

garden without worrying about its

need for water.

1 Divert downspouts into rain

barrels and collect free, oxygen-rich,

warm water for gardens and

containers. All plants love it and

respond better to rain water than the

cold water from the end of a hose.

2 I recommend a five-centimetre

(two-inch) layer of shredded cedar

bark mulch throughout perennial

and shrub beds. A generous layer of

mulch insulates the soil from the

drying effect of the sun and wind.

You will reduce watering by up to

70 per cent as a result and weeding

by up to 90 per cent the first year.

3 Apply water early in the morning

when less moisture will be lost to

evaporation. My rule of thumb for

watering both gardens and lawns is

to water deeply, usually no more

than once a week. Infrequent but

generous watering forces the roots

of plants to grow deeper in search of

moisture, without starving them for

water. Deep roots mean that plants

can better withstand short periods

of drought.

A garden that does not demand a lot of water also means that it will not demand

a lot of time. Properly thought-out and executed, a “low-water garden” may be the

closest thing that you will get to a “low-maintenance” garden.

Take time to enjoy your gardening experience. It is, after all, spring and Canadians

have waited long enough for it.

The underground economy is a big

problem in the residential

construction sector. It can lead to

liability issues for homeowners and lost

tax revenue for the government.

Doing deals under the table or “cash

deals” is often a sign that the person you

are dealing with is evading taxes. Often

these business owners aren’t paying

worker protection or liability insurance

either, which puts homeowners at risk.

This type of illegal business practice is

not only found in the residential

construction industry, but across many

industries in Ontario and Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, the

nation’s underground economy accounts

for $42.4 billion in annual economic

activity—2.3 per cent of the GDP—and in

Ontario alone, illegitimate transactions

amount to an estimated $15.3 billion.

In the residential construction sector, it

is unprofessional contractors, renovators,

suppliers and illegal homebuilders who

are responsible for 30 per cent of that

activity—an estimated $4.5 billion in

annual underground economic activity.

The provincial government recently

launched an initiative to look at ways to

combat the underground economy. MPP

Laura Albanese, Parliamentary Assistant

to Ontario’s Minister of Finance, held her

first consultation meeting with the

construction industry. She said the

province is looking to level the playing

field and enhance the competitiveness

of legitimate contractors while restoring

revenue integrity.

BILD has long been leaders in fighting

the underground economy in the

homebuilding and renovation industry.

In 2001, BILD created the RenoMark

program to help consumers identify

professional renovators. The program has

grown from coast to coast and now

RenoMark renovators can be found in

nine provinces and in more than 40

regions across the nation. In the GTA,

there are close to 300 RenoMark

renovators and trade contractors.

These professionals are members of

their local homebuilders’ association,

and they abide by a renovation-specific

code of conduct and a code of ethics.

By participating in this program, they

also agree to provide a written detailed

contract, carry applicable licenses and

permits, have a minimum of $2 million

liability insurance and offer a minimum

two-year warranty for all work done.

At the meeting, in addition to

recommending the government build on

the programs that already exist,

RenoMark members suggested a number

of other initiatives to Parliamentary

Assistant Albanese. These include

creating a public campaign to warn

homeowners about the risks of working

with fly-by-night business owners and a

permanent home renovation tax credit,

which is proven money well spent as

consumers are protected and

professional renovators are supported.

A few years ago, the federal stimulus

home renovation tax credit generated

$4.3 billion in additional registered

economic activity in return for an

average $700 tax rebate given to

homeowners through the program.

Today’s multipurpose kitchen is the nerve centre of the home. It needs to perform when it’s time to prepare food then quickly and easily convert to the most beautiful space in the home. One that is fit for entertaining and impressing guests and also provides a spot to

sit and read the paper, do homework, and table important family matters. It’s a lot to ask.

Although these spaces are the absolute focus of the renovation projects we perform at Eurodale Developments, they often steal the majority of the budget from whole-home remodels.

To help you assess your own kitchen renovation, I asked the group of experts who work on our kitchen renovation projects what they see as the biggest trends in kitchens for 2016. Here’s what they had to say.

Instead of Stainless Built-in,

panelized or hidden are the terms

used when talking about appliances.

We look to make them disappear

when not in use, so the focus can be

on the cleanliness and appearance

of the cabinetry, rather than focusing

on the refrigerator. A shift to coloured

stainless appliances is developing

in response to the tiring long-time

trend of stainless.

Hoodies While we are concealing

microwaves, ovens, dishwashers and

refrigerators, the focus has blossomed

to the cooktop or range with more

emphasis on the ventilation hood. This

is where we see the homeowners’ style

preferences shine. Large and pronounced,

sleek and concealed, cabinet clad or

exposed metals are all ways that clients

are having fun with the spaces and

drawing attention to the cooking area.

Wired Automation and control

continue to trend higher in our design

decisions. Charging or mounting of

hand-held devices to maintain a clean

and sleek environment, speakers and

automation of lighting and appliances

with smartphone control are perfect

for the entertainment wow-factor and

generally make running the kitchen

easier—something we can all benefit

from. Preheating the oven for that

pizza party can now take place while

the host is in the cab heading home,

reducing stress and the wait-time.

Colour The infamous white kitchen

has dominated projects over the last

decade. Today, people want to inject a

little personality and life and warmth

into the kitchen, but not too quickly.

TREND REPORT

soft greys, blues and greens—are

flooding project islands and, in some

instances, darker hues like navy, black

and charcoal are making a stronger

statement. Gold hardware is also

pushing out the more typical chrome

finish as the new kitchen bling. Gold

sets off nicely against these colours.

Open for Business In many urban

areas, the old small-segmented

kitchen spaces delivered cramped

quarters for families and their guests.

In these homes, it makes sense to

open kitchens to the dining or family

rooms. However, in larger homes,

kitchens can be closed off from other

living spaces because casual sitting

areas can be integrated into the

kitchen for social interaction. As a

result, the separate dining room offers

that formal holiday gathering

experience when the chef has made

both a fantastic feast and a horrible

mess in the kitchen.

Statement Lighting A kitchen

needs to be bright so we can see

what we are preparing, eating and to

ensure we don’t cut ourselves while

working. Recessed pot lights and LED

under- and in-cabinet lights do that

well. But with the proliferation of

open-concept kitchens and islands as

prep and social gathering spots, the

pendant lights overhead need to be

impactful. These accents can really

define the style intention—from glam

to concealed, these fixtures perform

double duty—form and function.

going back in time, some of the style

trends from the ’80s are showing up

in new projects, with a slight twist.

Visible brass hardware is replacing the

chrome and brushed-nickel finishes

that have dominated the last five years.

However, in 2016, the brass has a

brushed finish, not gleaming as in past.

Countertops Quartz countertops

continue to dominate the scene as the

manufactured natural stone styles

have continued to evolve at a feverish

pace. The desire to replicate the look

of mined slabs is evolving. These

mentally friendly slabs are being used

in both counters and backsplashes for

a more dressed and unified finish.

Cambria, a leading quartz supplier,

now has over 100 slab styles that

deliver a consistency in finish. With

mined slabs, the samples can vary

dramatically from the actual slabs.

Imagine the look and feel of marble

without the fear factor.

Get Organized It’s easier to relax

when a space is clutter-free and items

are easily accessible, and that fosters

culinary creativity. Drawers now

dominate over doors and, where

doors are present, slide-out shelves,

drawers and racks ensure we can find

the stuff at the back before it gets

mouldy. The use of pop-up hinge

hardware instead of typical doors has

made moving about the space easier,

with fewer concussions from banging

heads on open doors. Appliance

centres hide the counter appliances

to reduce the clutter and cords on

countertops. New style full-extension

shelves have surpassed the old Lazy

Susan, and garbage, recycling and

compost cabinet inserts organize

waste and reduce the smell and mess

common with the old grocery bag

holder under the sink.

{ THE BOTTOM LINE}The kitchen needs to be durable as

much as it also needs to look great.

Naturally, it must function effectively

through the variety of demands that

is required of such a multi-use space.

When planning your own kitchen

renovation, take the time to consider

how you intend to make use of the

space. Decisions about styling can

come later. While door styles, colours

and finishes change like fashion,

a space that is carefully planned and

professionally built with expert

craftsmanship and quality materials

will serve your family and guests

comfortably for many years to come,

regardless of the next hot trend.

Customization of storage in small-space kitchens is critical. Large full-extension drawers dominate the tight space for easy access

DESIGN SENSE

86 :: April/May 2016 renoanddecor.com

2 | Tub versus showerSAVE Most of us opt for an efficient

morning shower over a long tub soak.

That preference, combined with the

spacious hotel shower, commonplace

as of late, has a lot of us ready to ditch

the old tub/shower combo.

SPEND If you have only one wash-

room, you need a tub. Resale is about

appealing to the greatest potential

purchasing pool and no tub means no

families. Kids don’t shower. If you have

one washroom and enough room, do a

separate shower and tub. It carries a

lot of perceived value weight and

positions you above the competition.

TIP If you have more than one washroom, it’s fine to leave a tub and shower combo in the family washroom and opt for a luxurious oversized shower for the master ensuite. It’s the best of both worlds.

3 | Double sinksSAVE The reality is you’re not likely

synchronizing teeth-brushing. One is

more likely to be using the sink while

the other is doing makeup or hair.

Two mirrors and ample counter space

is a far more valuable combination

and it’s a more affordable renovation.

SPEND If you have a generous space,

by all means double up.

TIP I’m not sure when or how this became a thing but it’s comical to see two airplane-sized sinks squashed into a tiny ensuite. If you could fit two but there’s not a lot of counterspace as a result, I’d think twice. I’m a big fan of doing a double-wide vanity with one sink pushed to one side. At resale, simply have the realtor list it as a double vanity to keep the perceived value up.

hereas I grew up in a

house with one wash-

room, new-build homes

today seem to have one

washroom for every family

member. My teenage self would have

been in heaven!

Bathrooms are among the priciest

renovations and although they rank in

the top three for best return on invest-

ment (ROI), knowing when to splurge

and when to be conservative can have

a massive impact on the resale value.

Here are three areas where you need to

decide whether or not to spend or save.

1 | Changing the layout SAVE Fixtures that require water supply

and drain-like sinks, tubs and showers

can all be swapped and shifted with

relative ease. A shower can go where

a sink was and vice versa.

SPEND Toilets, on the other hand,

require a waste stack. The diameter of

that stack is too large to simply cut the

floor joists to accommodate, which

means to move the toilet, the stack

needs to be able to stay within the same

joist space or you will have to drop it

below the floor and back it up into the

new joist cavity. This will leave you with

a bulkhead in the ceiling below, which

is potentially a massive issue, not to

mention all of this can be quite pricey.

TIP Make a wholehearted attempt to work within the existing layout whenever possible. Invest that extra money in more obvious upgrades, like marble and nicer fixtures that have a higher perceived value and a greater ROI.

BRING THE OUTDOORS INFor 30 years, Perma-Wood has helped clients redefine

the relationship with their homes. The spaces they create

reflect the spirit of its surroundings, the architecture of

the home, and the way in which a modern family lives.

The extensive use of high-efficiency thermal glass makes

it possible to create year-round living spaces—beautiful

rooms that bring the outdoors in.

PERMA-WOOD SOLARIUMS, permawood.com

FOSSIL CASCADE The ErthCOVERINGS Cascade Series consists of lightweight

and easy-to-install stone planks designed to create a sense of

harmony and dramatic appeal. The natural stone is worked by

hand to create a surface texture made up of a cascade of natural

indentations resembling water ripples. This unique surface

treatment allows the stone to easily blend with its surroundings.

RENO & DECOR

STYLE SPOTSBY GLEN PELOSO & JAMIE ALEXANDER

Notable chefs tell you fantastic meals start with

excellent ingredients, just like great design begins

with excellent design ingredients. We have

shopped the world for beautifully designed furniture,

accessories and art, and added other elements from the

“Glen & Jamie” furniture line, produced in Canada and

designed by us. We’ve brought you several different design

esthetics evoking many different lifestyles you can visually

slide yourself into, or that we could create for you in your

own home. Every element has been produced with

exquisite craftsmanship and carefully selected to create

this fantastic meal for your eyes and other senses.

Let us help you make your own “Room for Living” at

the RENO & DECOR Design Intervention booth.

TREND WATCH

BY SILVANA LONGO

Spring has sprung in the northern hemisphere and, once again, our feathered friends are flying back to perch on home decor items. There always seems to be some kind of bird motif, somewhere. Remember the owl craze of 2012? As the need to bring nature indoors continues, this time we're treated to the bright colours of the tropics. The theme is captured perfectly by the latest Hermès Carnets d'Équateur porcelain service, with the sketches of wildlife artist and naturalist, Robert Dallet, carefully positioned on the surfaces in chromatic concordance. This season, the fine-feathered decor trend has migrated to include tropical birds like the strikingly beautiful (and endangered) macaw and the pretty-in-pink flamingo.
