about his experience on Timber Kings, and get a little preview of
what we can expect to hear from him at his upcoming Home and
Garden Show Appearance in Edmonton.
Q: Timber Kings it is a huge hit on HGTV - what has surprised you
the most with shooting a TV show about your family business?
A: I am going to answer this as our key group who I consider family
- even though our last names are not the same. For most of us
on the show the biggest thing is how people seem to get to know
you through the television screen. I never understood the power
of TV and the far tentacles that reach out in all directions because
folks get to know each of you. For us, we are very passionate and
yet humble guys; so, to run into folks anywhere you travel and
they come up to you and know your name - it’s still hard for us to
understand. I think we are getting used to it more as time goes on,
but it is still weird!
Q: Your love for the natural beauty of wood is evident in every
project you take on. What would you say is your favourite thing
about working with wood?
A: It is hard for me to focus on just one thing because for me it is
like a romance. I love everything about it, no other building material
can compare as far as I am concerned. It is in everything and in all
areas. To work with it, is forgiving - it is shapes and character. For
ambiance, it’s warmth; it is hues, tones and colors. Wood always
brings me warm and positive thoughts.
Q: When your team is beginning a new Pioneer Log Home design
project where do you look for inspiration?
A: We look within. We capture all the inspiration from all avenues.
Most of my drive is fed from the client’s wants & desires, as well as
ANDRÉ CHEVIGNY HAS HAD A LIFE-LONG LOVE AFFAIR with wood’s natural beauty. As the general
manager of the multimillion-dollar company, Pioneer Log
Homes of B.C., and a star from the hit HGTV show, Timber
Kings, André has a deep understanding of the many uses of
this natural building material. Whether he is managing his
more than 120 employees, or millions of dollars worth of
log inventory on the yard, it is evident to see André’s passion
for the industry. We caught up with André to chat with him

the location. We take every opportunity to
feed the project as a team. Relationship
is the new leadership; all parties having a
say in the project drives ownership and
brings the best results.
Q: Are there any new or interesting
trends you are seeing in log home styles
that are step away from the ordinary?
A: Our designs have always been a
step away from the ordinary. I believe
the wood inspires us to respect it in
every way, to showcase the natural
elements and the green building thought
processes. When I look back over my 30
years of building log homes I remember
we were and always have been different
than the rest.
Q: What do you think is the biggest
misconception people have about log
homes?
A: The biggest misconception is that
they are dark and dusty, especially from
a women’s perspective. A lot of the
turn-of-the-century pioneer homesteads
around North America were built from
necessity and survival; windows were
small, and floors were basic wood or even
dirt floors. Modern day log homes are
spacious, with tons of natural light and
are definitely not dusty. There are tons of
conventional homes that are a way more
dusty; and, what people don’t understand
is that dust actually has to do with the
heating and ventilation system. So, any
home can or cannot be a dusty home - I
hope that makes sense.
Q: Pioneer Log Homes has built
everything from log mansions to cozy
cabins – what has been the wildest
request for a home that you have ever
received?
A: One request doesn’t stick out, as
everything we do people push us to be
different & make theirs one of a kind. We
had folk’s in Arkansas last year want a wild
boar carving in their living room as they
are a game farm. The pig’s head was on
the outside of the home his [rear] end
was sticking inside the home. [They’re]
great people, and it takes all kinds.
Q: Is there a project that stands out as a
personal favourite from the last 40 years
with Pioneer Log Homes?
A:There are so many that it is hard for
me to choose one specific project.
There have been so many wonderful
projects, some large and some smaller,
that have been game changers for me.
If I had to choose one, it would be the
Gunter & Gloria Preuss home featured in
the magazine article on Season One of
Timber Kings. The relationship was built
over 3 or 4 years prior to construction,
and so did the evolution of the home. The
home features two large 12 foot Western
Red Cedar trees at either side of the front
entry. The folks are still people who I keep
in regular contact with, and I am blessed
to call them my friends.
Be sure to catch André Chevigny at the Edmonton Home + Garden Show; March 17-20 at the Edmonton Expo Centre!

Spring into action

Feature
by Marie Soprovich Owner Aquarian Renovations
THE MOTIVATION TO RENOVATE the
family home for this couple is nothing
short of a real love story. Terry and Laura
considered their renovation for many years
and dreamed, like many couples do, about
what they could do once they were empty
nesters. As Terry describes, their initial
objective was to relocate the laundry room
to the main fl oor to reduce the number of
steps between the source of their laundry
and the washing machine! They thought
they would sacrifi ce one of the existing
fi ve bathrooms and convert it into a main
fl oor laundry room but as they started to
make lists of what needed to be done they
quickly added the need for a new roof,
issues of aging plumbing, replacing the
old exterior aluminum siding and fi xing a
leaky basement. Laura jokingly added that
she just wanted to spend money but the
sparkle in their eyes said this renovation
was about much more than that.
Terry shared that the actual planning of
the renovation began two years before any
construction activity even started. Laura
said that “the catalyst for me wanting this
home renovated sooner rather than later
was when we had three fl oods in one year,
pipes bursting in the walls and roof tiles
fl ying off in big winds.” In addition to
these motivating factors this couple love
their community, have great neighbours
and the proximity to downtown and river
valley are superb. They also recognize
the “built in value of having purchased this
house many years earlier.”
When it came to the design, Terry
and Laura were very precise in what they
envisioned. “We wanted functional space
that suited our lifestyle and interests.
We also wanted a house that was fully
accessible for Laura and addressed her
mobility challenges. At an early design
stage we did add a second fl oor to the
A Renovation
LOVE STORYhouse, but ultimately decided that the
existing footprint was plenty big enough
for the two of us and we had to fi gure
out how to use that space in a way that
addressed our wish list. Some of the
essential elements were accessibility for
the long term. We took the approach
that this house, once completed, would
serve our purposes for the rest of our lives.
We wanted a home that we could grow
old in so, adding an elevator and making
the entire house handicap accessible,
especially the bathrooms with a handicap
accessible bathtub and shower, grab bars
and wide doors was really important. An
art studio with lots of natural light and a
large dining room to accommodate our
growing family was on that list. There
would be no kids table at our family
Christmas dinner! Adequate storage for
our art collection and a climate controlled
room for our musical instruments was
essential. We also wanted our space
to be open, beautiful, unique and

inviting. Fitting in with the heritage of our
neighbourhood was part of the deal so opting
for the exterior Craftsman style suited our
taste and the neighbourhood.”
Once Terry and Laura had their wish list
generated and had done their due diligence in
finding just the right contractor to meet their
needs, the design, estimate and construction
process began in earnest. “We looked around
for a number of years at renovations and new
construction occurring in and around our
neighbourhood and noticed that a few signs
kept showing up over and over. We looked
at the various projects while they were under
construction and gravitated to work that we
felt looked to be of the quality and esthetics
that appealed to us.” As Terry explained,
“Growing up in the home construction
business I observed the pace of projects, the
condition of the construction sites and the
timeliness of the various projects. All the
observations over the years helped inform
us in our decision to approach a short list
of contractors. We also talked to a number
of people who had experience with the
contractors we were considering to get a
feel for each contractor before we actually
contacted them.”
Having made this short list, Aquarian was
appreciative of the opportunity to be carefully
scrutinized in this selection process as it is
very important for homeowners to find just
the right contractor to work with. When
values, ideals, skills and vision line up, chances
of a successful renovation project and
working relationship are extremely high.
Terry continues to share his very
thoughtful decision making process, “We
spent time with each contractor to get
a feel for how they pursued their work.
Through our discussion we got a feel for
each contractor’s process for design, detail
selection, construction execution, project
management, invoicing and change orders.
Being a project manager myself, these
details were important to me for clarity and
certainty regarding project execution and
minimization of confusion. Communication
process between contractor and client were
also very important as was the contractor
interview. It mattered who represented
the contractor during those interviews and
how we were treated during that interview
process. For Aquarian, the owner, Marie,
and two of her key associates met us at our
home for the interview. Other contractors

arranged for us to meet them at their
offices where we met with an employee
whose job and first priority, we felt, was
to land a new contract. We felt Aquarian
put our interests first. At the end of the
interviews we requested references. After
checking all of the references for all the
contractors, we were convinced Aquarian
was the right company for us. A company
that we could work with. Being a one-
stop shop from design to completion was
also important to us. Meeting directly
with the owner, Marie, and her straight
forward approach to their work and our
very candid questions was really important
to us. She immediately created a feeling
of trust and confidence in our decision. It
was then decided that we would renovate
rather than build a new house. It may have
been simpler for us to tear down and build
new, given the extent of our renovation,
but we wanted to work with Aquarian.”
Laura sums it up even more succinctly,
”When you are going to be working with
people for at least a year, you want to
make sure that you “click” as it were.
Aquarian not only appeared to have its
game on but it felt like this business treated
its staff like family. There appeared to be
a lot of respect in the workplace and a
genuine excitement in the idea of working
with us! This made me feel confident and
excited about the prospect too!”
And so the renovation began… “The
design process (in fact the entire project)
was tremendously fun for us.” Laura and
Terry both quickly add. “There were a
million decisions to make throughout a
project like this and Aquarian’s approach to
early selection of so many of the detailed
design aspects prior to even signing the
contract for construction really proved
to be a great way to deal with so many of
these details. It is impossible to keep track
of all the design decisions that relate to
each other. The most helpful aspect of
this stage was an assigned designer who
helped us through all of these details and
kept track of all of our decisions along the
way!”
There were many unique details in
this renovation as Terry describes, “I think
one of the most unique things about our
2500 sq. ft. bungalow is that there are no
bedrooms on the main floor. The main
floor is all about living and enjoying our
personal interests with a large living/music
room, an even larger dining room and a
wonderful spacious kitchen. A climate
controlled storage room for our musical
instruments and a large, west facing art
studio were all created for us to pursue our
creative interests.”
The before and after pictures capture
some of the uniqueness of this renovation
but the joy that Terry and Laura so
graciously share about the feeling their
newly renovated home brings to them is
beyond what words can capture. “We love
that it felt like home right away. All of the
details were just what we wanted. It is nice
to be at the end of the project and to feel
that we did not compromise on anything.
All of the unique aspects of the house we
love because they reflect us.” Terry shares
an even deeper feeling of gratitude for the
mobility the renovation has provided. “We
are also very happy with how accessible
the entire house is for Laura. That has
made such a difference to her.”
When asked what she likes best
about the renovated space, Laura says, “I
love how our bedroom feels, like we are
away in a beach resort. I love working
in that gorgeous, functional kitchen. I
think the solar tube is cool as it gives
an incredible amount of natural light. I
love sitting by the fire place in the living
room and looking out on our beautiful
porch. I can’t wait to sit out on the
porch this summer. The garage is so
much more accessible without the terrible
disintegrating floor and middle post. The
elevator has saved me from so much pain
and I had my first bath (as opposed to a
shower) in years without needing help to
get out. I love watching our children feel
that this ‘new’ home was still their home.
Our 29 year old son actually cried because
he was so overwhelmed with the beauty
of it all.”
Terry and Laura said if there was
one thing they would change or add it
would be more lighting in certain places
like the closets and in the art room and
locate a few light switches differently
but besides that, the sentiments that are
echoed over and over again are ones of
gratitude, tremendous joy and excitement
for what they have created and a longing
to “entertain more, hold house concerts
and make our home a place of openness,
inviting to friends and family. We want to
share this home with others as much as
we can.” Laura shared that “one of the
best complements we have received from
family and friends was that even though
our home was beautiful and new, it felt
familiar. It felt like home…” She continued
to share that “people are astonished when
I tell them that we enjoyed the renovation
process!”
“Thank you so much for your
outstanding professionalism and
guidance.” Terry added, “It’s been a blast
and a real pleasure working with all of
you.“ And adding somewhat jokingly, “Let’s
do it again!”

arch is the month when we feel like we can see the light at the end of the winter tunnel. The days
are growing longer and we find ourselves thinking excitedly about summer.
As we eagerly await the lazy days of the season, you may be thinking about how to extend those sunny days beyond our short summers, while also wondering how you would enjoy a sunroom when it’s cold and dreary outside.
“Actually, you can enjoy a sunroom year round,” says Andy Banack of Apollo Sunrooms. “Our sunrooms are made for the Edmonton climate with specially developed glass that keeps out the extreme cold – and extreme heat, for that matter.”
ConservaGlass Select ™ is available exclusively through Apollo Sunrooms as a dealer of Four Seasons® Sunrooms. It was designed specifically for the extreme demands of glass rooms and utilizes the most advanced glazing technology available. Blocking harsh summer rays while capturing solar heat in the winter keeps your sunroom comfortable year-round, regardless of the outside temperature.
When someone is considering a ‘glass room,’ one of the common questions is about how to keep the glass clean. After all, what’s the point of having so much glass if keeping it clean is too much work?
ConservaGlass Select ™ is actually able to clean itself. Through the use of a patented coating process, the exterior
M finish of the glass is so smooth it reduces the accumulation of dust and dirt, so water (think melting snow or rain) simply rinses the glass clean.
“The type of glass used in a sunroom is very important,” explains Andy. “During a design consultation, we do a heat demonstration
with different types of glass. Anyone who experiences that demonstration is amazed at how ConservaGlass Select ™ performs.”
Another thing to consider is that a properly designed and built sunroom functions as a beautiful addition to the home and is often finished on the interior and exterior to hide the fact that it wasn’t there from the beginning. Planned properly, these rooms can function as a space for family gatherings, an additional playroom or living room – even a hobby or music room.
They add very desirable square footage to your home.
“Our design consultants work with you to achieve the style and function you want for your sunroom addition,” explains Andy. “There are as many choices as there are opinions. We work with homeowners through a step-by-step process focused on capturing their vision for their home. The planning part takes some extra time – but homeowners understand that we want them to make informed choices.”
As we wait through the month of March for sure signs of spring, now is the time to do a little dreaming about adding a glass room to let the sunshine in!

As we wait through the month of March for sure signs of spring, now is the time to do a little dreaming about adding a glass room to let the sunshine in!

begins with their team setting up a
meeting with the client to get a true
understanding of the scope of the
project. Next, a design team will go over
the client’s renovation goals and will
put together an agreement. Once the
customer approves the proposed plan,
design concepts are produced to show
clients an example of what their new
home or space will look like and a budget

upon and a signed retainer is

credited back to the customer at this
point. Clear communication is a priority

THE 2016 EDMONTON RENOVATION SHOW featured a home parade with a
heartwarming spin – five playhouses were
custom constructed and auctioned off in
support of the Edmonton Public Library.
The Home Style Construction team
designed and built one of the playhouses
hoping to assist in the fundraising for
this deserving local cause. Scott Hibbert,
from the Home Style Construction team,
explains that he “figured it would be a
lot of work since [my team] wanted to
build something fitting to the design and
quality of Home Style Construction - but
it turned out to be a TON of work! I don’t
think any of us at Home Style can do
anything half way”.
The playhouse project started in
early in January, where the team we
came up with the design and had their
draftsperson create a 2D drawing. There
was a lot of thought and planning put
into the design of the playhouse; as Scott
describes, “we wanted it to be well-built,
and appeal to both children and adults.
We wanted the children to think it’s fun
and want to play in it, and the adults to
agree it’s well-built and want to look at it
in their yard for years.”
The construction of the Home Style
Construction custom playhouse included
pressure treated joists and base framing,
it was wrapped in cedar decking and
trim, featured Cedar shakes on the roof,
real glass windows in cedar frames, and
so much more! Total construction time
included over 100 hours donated by the
Home Style Construction team. Glenora
Lumber gratefully supplied framing
materials, and Monarch Exteriors donated
the siding materials.
The final project was a huge success,
and to the excitement of many children,
the playhouse was put on display at
the Edmonton Renovation show for
bidding. The winning bid for Home Style
Construction playhouse was $5,200!
Funds raised will be put towards the
revitalization of the Stanley A. Milner
Library. Construction is set to begin
at the end of 2016, and will result in a
whole new and vibrant library that will
feature more public space and light,
building efficiencies, as well as greater
accessibility.

Tips And Tricks
Renovate To Improve YOUR Quality of Life
ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS to
improve the quality of our lives is to
improve the conditions in which we live.
Holidays are wonderful and truly bring us
back with a bigger view on life or maybe
a more relaxed demeanour. After a few
days or weeks however we may find that
the everyday grind of life and irritants of
our living environment, like that leaky tap
and the squeaky floor, not to mention the
dated paint colour and the worn carpet,
really can take us down. The freshness
of a newly renovated home is one of the
best investments a homeowner can make
in improving one’s quality of life. You
may need more living space or improved
energy efficiencies in your furnace, water
heaters or electrical systems. Maybe it is
that awkward and outdated kitchen floor
plan that has been driving you mad for
the last 10 years. Perhaps your closet is
crowded and you can’t imagine one more shower in that little dingy 1960 shower box…
and then there is your roof that leaks when the ice backs up and there is a funny smell in
the basement – which you haven’t really nailed down to one particular room but there
is something off. Finally you are ready to bite the bullet and truly invest in a lifestyle
renovation… one that you can and will enjoy every single day without exception. YOU
are not alone! Ask any one of the reputable RenoMark renovators about what they find
when they visit client’s homes to discuss possible renovations. There are as many stories
as people who live in these houses… the one thing that they all do have in common, is
that they are ready for a change. They are ready to improve the quality of their lives are
taking action by honestly looking at the environment in which they live. With this honest
self-appraisal comes a determination to invest time, money and energy to improvement!
Well done homeowners! There are a number of excellent renovation companies here in
Edmonton who are ready to help you!
So let’s talk about what you, the homeowner need to consider when you’ve finally
made the decision to renovate your home. First off, you might as well put the budget
on the table. What resources do you have to renovate with? As much as price should
never be the deciding factor when selecting a renovator, you should know your financial
situation well enough to know what you can afford in both the short and long term
situation. If you don’t have a healthy relationship with your banker or mortgage broker,
consider working on it. Financing is available at a very reasonable rate these days and the
lenders who know you and your financial plans will be more likely to help you get what
MAR - APR, 2016 | HOME DECOR AND RENOVATIONS 25 24 YPNEXTHOME.CA
you want, or at least what you need. Once you have your financials in order you can
start planning in earnest.
This is where hiring a professional really pays off. Renovation companies generally
operate on one of two systems. Some companies set up their systems to be a complete
design-build and will provide you with service from initial consultation through design
and estimate to a fixed budget construction contract and through the construction
process into warranty. This truly is a one-stop shop and most clients really like this
because they know what they are paying for up front and major decisions are made long
before any renovation and reconstruction even starts. Other renovation companies
may use a Cost Plus system. In this system the contractor is paid for time and materials
and is often used on jobs with a lot of unknowns or hidden conditions such as repair
work. It can be used on larger jobs as well if the specs and plans are not so clear. Having
this conversation upfront with your prospective contractor is a very important part of a
homeowners’ due diligence in the renovation process.
Once you have made up your mind to renovate, secured financing and found the right
contractor – let the joy of improving your quality of life begin! Your friends might thing
you are crazy thinking that a renovation can actually be a great experience but if you
get with the right contractor and have all the details worked out you may just surprise
yourself, and all your friends!

Decoding THE CODE
AAlthough people are most used to
seeing concrete foundations in homes,
construction using wood foundations
have (and continue to be) quite common and
popular for a variety of reasons. There are clear
building code requirements for both types
of foundations, however the key to wood
foundations is that the material used be labelled
as “preserved”.
Preserved wood used in foundations (PWF)
must be stamped or marked appropriately
for their intended purpose. This mark differs
from, and must be present in addition to,
grade stamps and markings found on non-
treated dimensional lumber and plywood. PWF
lumber and plywood must be marked with the
following information:
» identification of the certification agency
accredited by the Standards Council of
Canada;
» the initials PWF and FTB (French translation
for PWF);
» the designation O322 (CSA Standard
O322);
» the preservative used in treatment (e.g.
CCA for copper arsenate); and
» a four-digit symbol of which the first two
numbers denote the treatment plant and
the last two numbers indicate the year of
treatment.
Manufacturers, distributors, designers and
builders are responsible for ensuring lumber and
plywood used in preserved wood foundations
carry the appropriate treatment marks.

THERE ARE SOME CONFUSING signals in the news over the
past number of months. Suddenly, oil based energy costs
have dropped dramatically despite experts predicting resource
shortages in the years to come. At the same time, building
experts have concluded that the highest source of heating/
cooling costs are related to the building envelope and
specifically windows and doors.
Considering a probable rebound in oil/energy costs,
investments in new builds and renovations should reflect
future operating costs. A modest investment in better quality
fenestration not only reduces overall heat loss,
but also can create an excellent source of heat
in our cold climate market.
» Investment Point #1: Rather than save a few
short-term dollars on ‘cheaper windows,’ closely
evaluate overall R-value, thus reduced heat loss
for the long run.
“We have been refining our approach over
many years now to get to Net Zero in Manitoba,”

VIEWS IN YOUR HOME THAT PAY YOU BACK The benefits of high performance windows & doors

says Randy Proven, a founding member
of Sun Certifi ed Builders Cooperative.
“Thicker walls with less thermal bridging
and attention to air-sealing details,
allows us to deliver much higher building
performance.”
Careful consideration of the orientation
of the house, by elevation, creates
another really important consideration.
Peter Amerongen, President of Habitat
Studio and an expert on Net Zero
home building, relies as heavily as
possible on free energy from the sun.
Regarding a recent project, the Heath
new home construction in Edmonton,
he comments, “One of the reasons this
house has such a simple mechanical
system is because it is getting over 50%
of its energy just from the sun coming
through the south facing windows!”
Creating the right solution for
your home involves some careful
consideration to balance passive solar
gain with suffi cient shading in the hot
season , to avoid overheating. Some
contributing factors include: orientation
by elevation, location of deciduous trees,
roof overhangs, shade from nearby
buildings and the appropriate selection of
glass. The graph above provides insights
on diff erent types of glass coatings and
their eff ect on solar transmission.
» Investment Point #2: Do your
homework and consult with a
knowledgeable building expert
and window consultant to select
fenestration and glazing that suits
your specifi c project.
In addition, consider important
elements such as clear views of the
outdoors, cross ventilation in those
amazing spring and fall days, accessibility
through swinging/sliding doors which
do not block key pathways and the net
eff ect of the air tightness that is achieved.
Research has long demonstrated that
sliding windows are not nearly as air tight
as compression sealed windows such as
outward-opening casements/awnings
or European-style tilt n’ turn windows.
When considering swinging doors, multi-
point locking hardware can signifi cantly
improve air tightness, by ensuring that the
panel is tight along the full length of the
weatherstripping.
» Investment Point #3: Select enough
air tight venting windows which give you
fresh air, while limiting your heating costs.
Finally, thoughtful investments
on windows and doors should give
consideration to the longer term durability
and environmental impact of their
production and performance. Triple pane
glass will best maintain its seal when placed
in a stable and durable frame. Research
shows that fi berglass is one of the most
stable materials on the market today. While
wood is an excellent building material,
it tends to absorb moisture and expand/
contract with the changing seasons.
Lastly, consider the warranty and the
source of your window and door product.
Finding a locally manufactured product
may be not only a solid environmental
consideration but also a key factor in
long term support.
» Final Investment Point: Consider
selecting a local manufacturer and a
trust-worthy installer that will back your
warranty in the long run.
Building experts have concluded that the highest source of heating/cooling costs are related to the building envelope and specifi cally windows and doors.
