REMOTE LEARNING PLAN Overview Continuity of learning is the continuation of education in the event of a prolonged school closure or student absence. It is a critical component of school emergency management, as it promotes the continuation of teaching and learning. However, many considerations play a role in the development of continuity of learning programs, such as access and availability, type and quality of materials, and the length of time that the various types of learning will require. The Hicksville Public School District is continuing the education of our students within our local capacity. We maintain our commitment to setting student learning expectations (standards) for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of remote skilled instruction. The District created an initial Remote Learning Plan for the immediate and short term school closure which was implemented on Thursday, March 19, 2020. This Plan was shared with all the members of our community responsible for educating students including administration, teachers, parents and students. To accommodate an extended school closure, this revised Remote Learning Plan has been developed to outline specific details for remote instruction and learning including procedures for remote teaching and learning and support for students. The Hicksville Public School district is a one-to-one district for all students in grades 6-12. These students use Google Chromebooks. Office hours will be held according to the schedule outlined in this Plan. Students in grade K-5 do not have access to school issued devices. For families without access to devices, family outreach is taking place and a distribution plan is being developed. Altice and Optimum are offering free internet to families. This information has been posted on the district website and a robocall/text message will be scheduled. During extended closures, teachers will begin creating and posting three prerecorded lessons per week which students will be able to listen to independently. In addition, daily one hour synchronous, audio office hours will give students the opportunity to interact audibly with the teacher enabling them to ask questions and receive live support. This structure can ensure learners have the access they need to instructional content at their convenience while also having opportunities for additional support during office hours.
