Students watched a special presentation by Grace Maglio that detailed the diverse and important range of species which perform a vital function in keeping our environment healthy and underlined the rare and unique nature of our local ecosystem on the mudflats. From this, the students had access to a range of photographs taken by local environmentalists to source inspiration for the design of their critters. The students got to work drawing up their inspired masterpieces, paying close attention to the art elements of line and shape, and the principles of pattern, repetition and contrast in their designs. The final student designs will be provided to a professional artist to become the source of imagery for a series of murals across the new playground. - Stay tuned for more.

Mathew Burt I Principal

Ngaji Gurrijin, We are looking forward to seeing some of the fences on our building project come down after the holiday break. The landscape works are starting to take shape. New seating and shade structures will be placed, surrounded by garden beds soon to be filled with plants and trees. The works are currently running on time and we look forward to a completion date in late August or early September. This will allow us to start moving into the new building in Term 4. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 students have recently completed exams and in-class assignments and staff have been busy finalising semester one reports for all students. Due to the interruptions to curriculum delivery this term, our Year 7 - 10 reports will not contain grades. The semester one reports usually have a progress grade but this year will not as we keep in line with department advice. Our Year 11 and 12 reports, however, will contain grades and comments as normal. From what I have seen so far a number of students have performed exceptionally well with very high results and/or significant improvements even with the interruptions to their learning routine. The upcoming Term 2-holiday break is a perfect time to relax and re-charge for the second semester. Our students and staff have had a challenging term with ongoing changes and uncertainty. This has been exhausting, so I encourage you all to make the most of the break and find time to switch off and relax. Congratulations to all our students on your hard work and focus during these challenging times. You have all been fantastic, even when challenged you all continued to impress with your maturity and commitment to learning. Have a wonderful break and we’ll see you again in Term 3. Gala Mabu.

PRINCIPAL'S PEN New science resources make a difference in classJoelene Pearson I Science TeacherThis term in Science, the Broome Girls Academy students have been busy learning about ecosystems and food chains found in mangroves and identifying the animals that live in these ecosystems by their names in Bardi language. The girls have been excited about using their new whole-class book sets kindly donated by Deadly Science, an organisation who have been supporting many schools around Australia through donations of books and other exciting Science equipment. The books have made a great addition to the teaching and learning resources in our Science department.

VET students commence their Certificate I studiesSam Alexeeff I Year 10 VET TeacherThe Year 10 Vocation Education and Training (VET) class has had a busy Term 2 having commenced a Certificate I in Resources and Infrastructure at North Regional TAFE. We were fortunate enough to start this course earlier than anticipated and are looking forward to our block week of training in Week 10. Students are undertaking units of competency such as; Operating small plant and equipment, Using hand and power tools, and Work safely and follow Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.

Furthermore, with the easing of restrictions, we have been able to invite guests from different industries again to speak with the class. Recently presenting their industry to the class, were a heavy-diesel mechanic, an ex-SAS soldier, the general manager of Cygnet Bay Pearls plus tourism operators Terry Hunter (Cygnet Bay Pearls) and Bart Pigram (Narlijia Experiences Broome).

Despite COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time, National Reconciliation Week, 27 May to 3 June this year, kicked off here at school with some fun activities. Staff commenced the week looking bright and colourful, wearing their deadly Indigenous shirts. Miss Linah cooked up some of her delicious damper and the Cultural Centre, in conjunction with the Broome Clontarf Academy and Broome Girls Academy presented a

curry tasting and the "Sea of Hands" on Mabo Day to wind up Reconciliation week. A "Stand for Reconciliation" event ran during

form class and online incursions and the viewing of the critically-acclaimed documentary In My Blood It Runs (coincidentally premiering on ABC this Sunday 5 July, 9.30pm) occurred throughout the week. "Reconciliation is a journey we should all walk on together…. And it starts with you!"

Denise Shillinglaw I Head of Learning Area, EnglishOur very own English teacher, Mrs Lott was the "Chef" for a day when she taught the Year 11 Foundation and General English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students recently as part of their investigations of different cultures this term. Mrs Lott delved into her Irish roots to show the students how to cook Irish Boxty last week. Irish Boxty is a simple recipe using leftover mashed potatoes, grated potatoes, egg and seasoning which is mixed together to form a sticky dough and fried to create potato cakes. The students were able to create their own batches of Irish Boxty which were very successful. Mrs Lott explained her family history with photographs of her grandmother's house, as well as how important potatoes are/were in Irish history.

Year 11 EAL/D students continue getting a taste of Cultures

Students design support packs during COVID-19 Naomie Hatherley I Child Family and Community teacherThe Year 11 Children Family and the Community class were on task this term with designing a ‘Helping Out’ package for families stuck at home during the Coronavirus isolation restrictions. Students made a range of products designed to keep boredom at bay and to help families connect. The products included a selection of slime and play dough kits, stuffed toys, recipe cards and a children’s book with a matching toy.

While still in development, students learnt about some of the services and agencies in town to help families in need. From this, they decided they would like to donate their hand made care packages to support families in need.

Students gain a cultural perspective in the yarning circle Emily Criddle I HASS Teacher

The Year 7 Academic Extension group enjoyed being part of a yarning circle with Ms Bec and Ms Linah this Thursday. They have been learning about the formation of the universe and Earth and the ways that these processes impacted the features of an Earth that became suitable for life, including water as a resource. Ms Bec and Ms Linah offered an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective on uses and values of water, impacts of water on natural

and built environments that have spiritual significance and ways that resources have been used by people over time to sustain life.

Staying safe onlineAngela Pethick I School Chaplain

As parents/caregivers in today’s world, it can be extremely challenging to understand, monitor and support our young people in their navigation of our ever-changing online world. Esafety Commissioner is a government support service designed to help people stay safe online. It provides some fantastic resources to guide parents in understanding and supporting how their children interact online: https://www.esafety.gov.au – just click on the “Parents” tab. Here’s a taster of what you’ll find:- `Want to know more about the apps and games your child is

using? The eSafety guide can help: https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide

- Managing screen time and setting age-appropriate boundaries.

- How to talk to your child and advise about sharing intimate images and messages.

- Online gaming – be aware of the risks so your child can enjoy the benefits.

- Cyberbullying – being aware of the risks and how to support your child if they are being bullied online.

Hot soup on a cold dayJoelene Pearson I Special Education Needs (SEN) teacherThe SEN students in 'Cafe Ole', (a "life skills" program) ran a mini enterprise and sold hot 'chicken soup' recently. It was a very successful venture. The students enjoyed planning,

preparing and then selling the soup to our staff members. Next semester they will be running the Cafe more frequently and will be learning how to make coffees using our new coffee machines.

Our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) focus for the last 3 weeks of this term has been to "Lead by Example". This focus has been driven by the PBS team through setting out delivery of lesson ideas and discussion topics during form class for all year levels.

The fundamental philosophy behind PBS is that positive social behaviour is a learned behaviour and therefore can be taught. Let’s all get behind PBS at school and model this sort of behaviour at home and in the community.
