Olivia & Jessica from Room 3 are our People of
the Week. They raised money last week from their
stall on Friday. This was part of their homework
challenge. The girls sold cookies & bracelets and
raised $70.00 which we will bank into the
Caritas bank account. WELL DONE !
Dear families
Catholic Character
Next Wednesday to Friday, the teachers and I, along with some of the our Board of Trustees members, will be
attending the New Zealand Catholic Education Convention. A few families have not yet informed us about
their plans for our early finish on Wednesday 10 June.
Reminder: School will close at 2.00pm, Wednesday 10th June.
Please tell us arrangements for your child(ren) by this Friday:
Email us, send us a note, or complete the online form (link also in email):

Reminder: School will be closed Thursday 11th and Friday 12th of June.
Be Caring
One of our four school rules is: Be Caring. At St Teresa’s, we try to educate
the whole child—we don’t just focus on academics and physical fitness.
All of our school values focus on looking out for the needs of others.
Sometimes your child will be involved in learning activities that
are specifically designed for them to show caring, by helping others
— supporting children who are struggling with learning about positive
behaviour, or reading, or writing, for example.
This will mean putting their needs behind someone else’s.
Be Caring
Be Respectful
Be Safe
Be Your Best
Learning
Yesterday the teachers met to discuss children’s writing, with a focus on the children’s ability to choose words
and phrases that are appropriate for the context. For example, when writing a scientific report, it would be
appropriate to use words and terms that are scientific, such as petal, stem, leaf; within a fairy tale it is better to
include castles, dragons and words that create a mood; when giving directions, writing needs to include phrases
like, “turn left when you reach the next intersection”.
How can families help? It would help your child’s writing, if you talked with them about words that fit with a
context—when reading the paper, reading websites, reading road signs, watching a movie, etc. Try to use
interesting words when you talk to your child, so that their own word-bank of words they know can grow.
Absences from School
Please ensure that you email [email protected] if your child is going to be away. You must state the
reason for their absence, as we are required to keep this information on record. Thank you.
2014 Annual Report
Our Annual Report for 2014 has now been submitted
to the Ministry of Education. This document is available
on the school website. The Annual Report includes:
2014 finances, auditor’s independent report, etc
Analysis of Variance—How we got on with our learning
targets, etc
National Standards Results
If you would like a paper copy of the Annual Report, please contact the school office to request one.
Buildings
Over the next few weeks, you may see builders working around each of the older buildings, making repairs and
replacements for any weather boards that are damaged and rotten. We are also carrying out preliminary inves-
tigations for painting, which will include taking photos of existing paint work.
Balancing the Books
There has been much talk in the media about the need for schools to receive funds from parents to support day
to day management and learning activities. While we ask for donations and contributions, so that we have
adequate staffing and varied learning activities, we do not enforce payment. No child misses out on any activity
or resource, because of non-payment.
Our income from the Ministry of Education does not cover our running and learning costs. However within gen-
erous donations and contributions from parents and community groups, we are able to make the books balance.
This year, we also received generous donations from St Vincent de Paul Society, covering the cost of two
students attendance at camp, and we have also received a donation from Karori Rotary Club, to support
learning. Thank you to each of these organisations.
Have a lovely week.
Kind regards and God Bless

May Board of Trustees meeting
At the May 14 Board of Trustees meeting we established a new position of Deputy Chair and unanimously
agreed to elect Jenny Edwards to this new role. Jenny will deputise for Mike Smith if he is unable to attend
a Board meeting or another school function. We also confirmed a number of administrative reports which
were straight forward because of the preparatory work that Mary Angela has done before hand. One of
these reports was the annual Attestation to Cardinal John Dew (School Proprietor) which focuses on the
Catholic Character of the school and the faith education at the school in relation to our pupils and teacher
staff. St Teresa’s rates strongly against all the requirements. The report also comments on the condition
of the school property.
The Wellington City Council's discussion on making Karori a medium density housing area has led the three
Karori primary schools to initiate discussions on roll numbers and hence to form a working group to work
through the implication of increasing population numbers. Father Seph, Phil Simpson and Mary-Angela
will represent St Teresas in future discussions.
Operation Outdoors progress continues, albeit a little slower than hoped, as details like resource consents
and property boundaries are worked through.
The vacant staff representative position on the Board is due to be filled once we go through the required
election process. This is now underway and we look forward to having a staff member's perspective back
on the Board in the near future. The Board still has one vacancy for a parent representative. We are
looking for nominations of a parent who has a passion for the school and who wants the very best our
children. If you are interested in this role, please contact our Chairman – Mike Smith
[email protected] or any other Board member. This vacancy is only for a short term, just until the
next election in early 2016. It’s a perfect chance for someone to come in on a trial basis.
Western Zone Cross Country Training

some extra running practice. These will be held on Sunday 7 June at 3.30pm Please meet in front of the

please contact Jacquee Schubert at [email protected]

tion for a long-term recovery.
