Sore Throat If your baby is whining while swallowing, refuse to eat or drink, grabbing or scratching his throat, most probably these are signs of sore throat. We can help the baby relieves the discomfort and let him rest better for speedy recovery. REMEDY 1 Soothing drink Mix 1 teaspoon of active manuka honey (15+ or above) with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Let your child swallow the mixture slowly. This mixture has anti-inflammation properties. It forms a soothing film over the inflammed throat. You may also dilute with 2 tablespoons of water. Honey is not suitable for babies under 1-year old. REMEDY 2 Lemon hot compress to soothe sore throat discomfort Prepare lemon slices, hot water, one small and medium sized towel each. Soak lemon slices in hot water for 5 minutes. Wet a face towel in the hot lemon water, wring out water thoroughly and wrap around throat area with the towel. Make sure the temperature is hot but not too hot it burns the skin. Keep it warm by covering with another medium sized towel. You may also add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil into the hot water. Eucalyptus essential oil is very good for relieving nasal congestion and breaking down thick mucus. Colic Colic usually occurs in babies below 3-month old. It makes baby cries or displays symptoms of distress for no other apparent reasons, usually in the evening. It is less common in breastfed babies. There are a few causes of diarrhoea in babies, including change of diet, food allergy, medication or infections due to poor hygiene or teething. Some useful tips to manage baby’s diarrhoea: Make sure baby drinks plenty to prevent dehydration. If your baby has started consuming solid food, remember the BRAT diet guide. B – Banana R – Rice A – Apple sauce (Apple & Quince jar, Babynat) T – Toasted bread These foods help to firm up and bind baby’s stool during diarrhoea. Feed your baby with small meal to allow the digestive system to work gently. REMEDY 1 Probiotic to restore the balance of friendly bacteria Take ¼ teaspoon probiotic (friendly bacteria) once every 2 hours. Diarrhoea Cough Cough is actually a healthy and important reflex that protects the breathing airways in the throat and chest. Your child cough to clear the lining of the throat and respiratory tract from irritation caused by dust particles, air pollutants, food, smoke or excess mucus secreted by mucous membrane itself to soothe irritation and inflammation triggered by infection. REMEDY 1 Garlic syrup Put 4 – 5 peeled garlic cloves into a clean glass jar, cover with 4 tablespoons of raw honey. Leaving to stand in a warm place for several hours. Take 1 teaspoon a few times daily to relieve cough. Garlic is a wonderful natural expectorant and strong antiseptic. A regular course of this garlic syrup will also strengthen the breathing airway and ensure that cough is kept at bay. REMEDY 2 Cough syrup Add equal portion of fruit enzyme, apple cider vinegar and active manuka honey (15+ or above) into a glass jar, shake well. Take 1 teaspoon, a few times daily. Eczema Eczema is often found as red and scaly patches on baby’s cheeks, joint of arms and legs. It is an immune system reaction which could be triggered by irritants such as chemicals in soap, cream, detergent, or allergens in baby’s diet such as cow milk protein, eggs, and citrus fruits. The condition can be worsened by stress, heat and sweat. REMEDY Probiotic and Virgin Coconut Oil to promote friendly bacteria and strengthen immune system. Infants (0-12 months): Feed the baby with coconut oil, ¼ teaspoon twice daily with/after meal. Can be added into milk and cereal. Give baby ¼ teaspoon probiotic (friendly bacteria), twice daily, 45 minutes before meal. Both of these help to strengthen baby’s natural defense system. For babies above 1 year old, increase the dosage of virgin coconut oil from ¼ to 1 teaspoon. It is important to keep baby’s skin hydrated to reduce the itchiness. Mix 1 teaspoon of calendula oil and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil evenly, apply onto baby’s skin immediately after bath. The oil blend moisturises baby’s skin and provides essential fatty acids which accelerate skin healing. Alternatively, you can use organic and earth-friendly moisturising products by Living Nature, Weleda, Cherub Rubs and Buds. Moody Babies? To calm a fussy or sleepless baby. REMEDY 1 Orange & lavender essential oil Put 2 drops of orange essential oil + 2 drops of lavender essential oil into a burner. This wonderful scent creates a joyful atmosphere while relaxing the irritable baby. Excellent for promoting good sleep. REMEDY 2 Little Sunshine Baby Tea, Sonnentor This soothing tea blend of fennel, anise, caraway and lemon balm is 100% caffeine free. Specially selected herbs to calm baby’s irritation. Suitable for babies from 6 months and above. REMEDY 3 Apple cider vinegar bath Pour half cup (125ml) of apple cider vinegar into warm bath water. Let your child sit in the bath tub, bath your child gently. Apple cider vinegar purifies your child’s aura by dispersing negative energy away. This brings emotional relief to him. REMEDY 4 A bowl of salt and lemon slices Baby’s emotion may also be affected by draining vibrations left in the atmosphere from previous unpleasant happenings such as arguments or conflict. Place a bowl of salt and lemon slices in the bedroom, leave overnight and bury it away from the house in the next morning. This protects your child from negative energy which makes him uncomfortable and irritated. Fever Fever can activate your child’s immune system in a natural way, and prevent susceptibility to disease in later life. Paediatrician Dr Uwe Stave reported 1 : “Fever attacks can affect children in quite a positive way. Even though his physical strength is reduced, the child may disclose a wealth of new interests and skills. He may find new and advanced ways to communicate, think, and handle situations, or display a refinement of his motor skills. In short, after a fever, the child reveals a spurt of development and maturation.” 1 ”Reflections on Fever in Childhood” Journal for Anthroposophy No. 42 REMEDY 1 To disperse the heat quickly. Rub each sole with a drop of lemon essential oil follow by a drop of peppermint essential oil. REMEDY 2 Boost your child‘s immune system to fight against infection. Feed your child with ½ teaspoon of active manuka honey (15+ or above) and 1 teaspoon of virgin coconut oil three times daily. Honey is not suitable for babies under 1 year old. REMEDY 3 Hot compress with lemon to help disperse the heat throughout whole body. Prepare hot water (38°C - 40°C) in a large bowl, one lemon, knife, a pair of adult sized socks, an empty glass bottle. 1. Cut the lemon in the hot water into half, then cut into rays from centre outward. 2. Press the lemon with a glass bottle to squeeze the juice and essential oil into the water. 3. Soak the socks in the lemon water and wring dry thoroughly. 4. Put on the socks for your child, the socks should cover the calf. 5. Cover legs properly with blanket.
