DEC 2017/JAN 2018 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3
“What is Your Favorite Christmas Tradition?” When Jesus was Born- “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” Isaiah 9:6 Earlier this year Church Council agreed to give permission to two local businessmen to plant a tree, a Christmas tree, in front of our gazebo. One is a landscaper, the other a locksmith. Asking why they wanted to plant a Christmas tree on our property, one responded, “Well, we wanted to begin a new tradition in the valley, the lighting of “the town Christmas tree”, the night before the Hometown Christmas Parade. We hope families come out to see it, maybe sing some carols enjoy some light refreshments and meet and greet their neighbors.” Church Council granted them permission to plant the Christmas tree and begin a new tradition for the valley, providing that they maintain it, and they promised they would. So Saturday evening, December 2, 6:00 pm, will be the very first Tree Lighting. “A new tradition”, said the one salesman. A new Christmas tradition for the valley…a wonderful idea I thought. I got to thinking about traditions, specifically, Christmas traditions. What are your family Christmas traditions?
• Shopping and gift buying? • Baking cookies for the kids/grandkids and maybe singing or listening to some Christmas carols as you work? • Visiting a neighbor who has little or no family and taking along some of those fresh baked cookies as a gift? • Going shopping for the Christmas tree and decorating it? For some, it’s Thanksgiving weekend, when they put up the outside Christmas lights. • Christmas office parties? • Entertaining over the Christmas holidays? • Traveling to visit family, maybe grandma? • Sending out Christmas greetings to family and friends?
• Watching some of your favorite Christmas movies, or going out to the movies to see one of the new releases?
• Exchanging a Pollyanna with a friend or family member? • Going out to eat, maybe trying out that new restaurant?
I’m sure there are other favorite Christmas traditions that I’ve missed. Some of these traditions have been with some families for generations. I know from pre-marital counseling, when I ask a couple for their favorite family Christmas tradition, they often tell me they are going to continue it when they begin a family, and so it goes. One time, years ago, one wife told me that their family Christmas tradition was going to church on Christmas Eve, the early service when they were kids, the later one when they got older. How about you? Of all your family Christmas traditions, is going to church on Christmas Eve, with your family, on your “to do list”? Because of all of your favorite family Christmas traditions, as precious and as special as they are, would you not want to come and worship the Christ child, who is “the reason for the season?” “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” Isaiah 9:6 Think about it.

To quote the Grinch, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas:” by Dr. Seuss “And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” December 2017: Sun. 12/03 Tot Time (9:00 – 9:30 AM) M.S. DEC 2017/JAN 2018 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 5
CHURCH PROPERTY UPDATE: Two roofing matters came to our attention and needed
to be addressed: the flat roof over the main entrance to the church, and, the flat roof over the vestibule on the East Greenville side of the sanctuary. Both roofs were leaking badly, causing damage to the inside of our building. Banes Roofing replaced both roofs at an expense of nearly $13,000. In addition to having the Social Room walls sealed earlier this year, (they were being damaged by water seeping in at a cost of $4,000) we also had the room painted, costing us $3,200.00. Unfortunately, none of these items were budgeted, resulting in a budget deficit of nearly $30,000 (which includes an income deficit of $10,000). A generous response to Pastor Chuck’s Christmas letter this year would be a tremendous help. Look for it at the end of November. A few members did a walk- through of the building and walked around the outside of the building to identify anything that might need attention in the near future. A number of items were reported: • The Social Room floor needs to be
replaced. A number of areas have tile “lifting” due to moisture, and they have become a tripping hazard. Fortunately, we have $10,000 set aside for this project, hoping that will cover the costs.
• The bell tower needs to be painted; and, the stucco on the outside walls in the courtyard is cracking and falling away. Moisture could easily get behind it and cause damage to our inside walls. It’s been probably ten years or more since the bell tower was last painted. The stucco, we need to remember, was the original stucco from when the educational wing was built in 1960, 57 years ago. These two projects will cost approximately $30,000. Church Council is considering a Capital Fund Campaign early next year to try and raise the money for these two projects. The work will be done sometime in the spring or early summer.
• One of our large stained glass windows,
seen from inside the courtyard, has some wood rotting away. The stained glass company will pull the panel in the spring and take it to their shop for repairs. Cost of repairs will come from our Stained Glass Fund, which is supported by you whenever you place an offering in the Stained Glass envelope that comes in your offering packet.
While our building is in good shape overall, there are some areas that will be needing our attention. Church Council feels strongly that we need to address the above items in the near future because putting them off will only do more harm to our building, and, likely cost us more in the long run.
CHURCH COMMITTEE AND TREASURER REPORTS are due into the Church Office by January 14, so that they might be included in the Annual Reports of 2017 and presented to the congregation at our
Congregational Meeting on February 11, following the 10:15 AM service. Lunch will be provided and a free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses. Dear St. Mark’s Lutheran Church – Thank you for your gift of $2,835.00 to Lutheran Disaster Response. With this gift you are providing emotional and spiritual care, supplying emergency relief and addressing long-term recovery. 100% will go towards Hurricane Relief. In God’s Grace, The Rev. Daniel Rift, Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
