    THE RELTHOZA EMPIREO all the alien species encountered by humanity during itsoutward exploratory push rom erra, none were as dangerous,or put up such vigorous resistance to human encroachment ontotheir territory, as the Relthoza.

    Tey participated in the longest and most arduous rst contactcon ict with human pioneers, which came to be known as theTessaly War.

    In this sense, the Relthoza can be said to have played a key role inthe ormation o the later Dindrenzi state. Te Tessaly War was agrim a air. A combination o an overtly hostile alien species and alack o military support rom distant erra, contributed heavily to

    orming both the Outer Reach settlers xenophobia and antipathy to Earth and its centralised government.

    For their part, the Relthoza were equally disquieted. Toughthe colonists did not know it, the Tessaly War was costliest theEmpire had waged up to that point in its long existence. TeRelthoza eventually made peace as they did not wish to risk becoming a subjugated race a ate they believed would be allthem i they lost militarily.

    Te Relthoza are visually one o the most intimidating andrightening xenos species encountered by humans something

    which undoubtedly contributed to initial human hostility towardsthem.

    Tey are an insectoid race, bearing a strong, and or humans o endistressing, resemblance to arachnids. Tey have a centaur-likeposture, their abdomens and lower thorax low-slung and standingon between our and six limbs or locomotion. Teir upper bodiesare erect, but with carapaces that make them seem hunched over,with our more manipulatory limbs ending in clusters o nely dextrous ngers.

    Teir aces are the very epitome o inscrutable, with between sixand ten glassy eyes set around a complex set o mandibles. wolong, whip-like antennae stretch backwards rom their ovoidskulls. Teir bodies are covered with exible chitin carapaces.Relthoza come in many colours, although they are always dark and glossy and vary greatly in size, depending upon their caste.

    Te Relthoza race has our distinct castes. Tese are the Ssvirss,Vassur , Kssarkand Avalssorssis; classi ed by humans as menials,workers, soldiers and royalty. Tey are not sub races, any morethan the di erent strains within ant or wasp colonies.

    Ssvirssare the smallest and weakest o the Relthoza, and also themost numerous. Tey attend to the everyday unctions that hivesgoing; artisans, bureaucrats, minor administrators, and general

    unctionaries. Averaging our eet tall and six eet long, they areshy and timid, not predisposed to aggression.

    Te Vassur are also workers, but larger and stronger, averagingsix to eight eet tall and over ten eet long. Tey attend toharder occupations; miners, metalworkers and heavy industriallabourers.

    Te Kssark, the true Relthoza warrior caste, are larger andstronger still, over ten eet tall and een eet or more long, withthick carapaces. Tey are also the only Relthoza males. Teirpurpose is almost wholly militaristic.

    Finally, the Avalssorssis, the Brood-Queens, are the rulers o Relthoza society. In size, they are gigantic, and can reach upwardso y eet long. However, like erran termite queens, once they have reached maturity, they are little more than near-immobileegg- actories.

    Te Rethoza are mostly introverted, concerned mainly withkeeping a tight hold on the teeming, populous planets o theirEmpire, and the vassal races whom they also govern. Chie amongthe latter are the Vonar, who serve as agriculturalists, producing

    ood and similar products o all kinds or their masters.

    Relthoza exploration eets requently leave imperial space on voyages o discovery, o en involving trade with others. However,while mostly avoiding con ict, every so o en, the Empire is seizedby the need to expand. Human scientists see this as analogous tothe swarming o a colony o bees or wasps.

    It is at these times that the Relthoza are at their most dangerousand aggressive, prepared to take by orce what they cannot secureby exploration. Un ortunately or rather, ortunately or theDindrenzi the war in the Storm Zone has coincided with justsuch a swarming urge. Te Relthoza are going to war en masse,driven as much by social and biological imperative as by the needso their allies.

    LEADERSHIP AND SOCIETYFrom the moment they make the transition rom larval to adult

    orm every Relthoza knows the place that is expected o it theEmpires society. Inter-caste revolt is practically unknown thelast time the Empire was aficted by anything like social unrestwas over een hundred years ago.

    Te Empire is a eudalistic hierarchy, with bonds o obligationand responsibility running up and down its caste system, romthe humblest worker to the most power ul Brood-Queen. EachRelthoza world is governed by a conclave o its Queens.

    Generally, there are between ve and ten Brood-Queens on agiven planet, although some larger worlds have more. AzizaPrime, the ancient capital planet o the Empire, boasts upwards o twenty Brood-Queens.

    Te Brood-Queens are the absolute rulers o Relthoza society.I they do not succumb to disease or a violent demise, RelthozaBrood-Queens can survive almost eight centuries.

    Teir control is such because they are the sole breeders o new Relthoza. Tey mate with the strongest o their Kssarknobles,and then produce eggs by the thousand. Tey are able to modi y what their o spring will be based upon which castes the Broodrequires.

    Because o their physical immobility, each Brood-Queen isattended by a substantial sta o handmaidens who cater to herevery need. Tese will be other, immature members o the broodsroyal caste, who resemble Vassur workers.

    Te Queens govern through the Kssark caste, whose seniorwarriors act as agents and en orcers o the royal will. Members o

    other castes take on the roles assigned to them when they emergeas adults.

    Although disputes between members o di erent castes are allbut unknown, disagreements and arguments can and do cropup between individuals o the same caste. Te resolution o suchmatters is governed by a complex system o ritual combat, o en

    atal. Ritualised death is in act a characteristic eature in many areas o Relthoza society.

    Tis can and has caused problems in the past, particularly since theRelthoza o en extend their traditions to outsiders. It is customary

    or negotiations between Broods to be preceded by ritualised

    combat to the death between selected emissaries o each.

    Te Relthoza have o en killed alien ambassadors by accident ordesign because o these traditions. Tis was one o the reasons theTessaly War was so protracted. Tese traditions extend to thehighest levels o Relthozan society. When a Brood-Queen dies, herhandmaidens will ght or the right to succeed her. Te survivinghandmaiden will then develop to ull maturity at an acceleratedrate, taking over the old Queens position.

    On rare occasions, all o the handmaidens will destroy each otherin these ghts. I this happens, several o the Broods Vassur will spontaneously develop into Avalssorssis the only knownexample o Relthoza crossing castes.

    Te cycle o combat then continues until one royal caste Relthozaachieves dominance. Te longest known succession o this kindtook place on Telemica, among the Qussarmass Brood. Teyear-long ritualised struggle cost the lives o all one hundredand seven Avalssorsisshandmaidens, and a urther one hundredand sixty-two transmuted Vassur . Such protracted struggles are,however, rare.

    Te title o Empress, ruler o all the Relthoza, is traditionally bestowed upon the oldest Brood-Queen o Aziza Prime. Currently,this honour alls to Akvassiragakvassaa. She is known to theDindrenzi as Lady Venomspine or the Old Lady o the Ri s.

    Venomspine only recently came to the notional Relthoza throneand is perhaps more vigorous and ame-seeking than on older orwiser ruler would be. She was certainly more incautious.

    Tis was most vividly demonstrated by her early policies regardingoutsiders. Venomspine insisted upon a reassertion o Relthozantraditions. However, this included li ing the moratorium placedupon duelling and killing non-Relthozan diplomats.

    A number o Dindrenzi and Directorate emissaries, trying togarner support or the creation o the Zenian League, wereslaughtered in the arena be ore negotiations took place on AzizaPrime. o her credit, Venomspine realised her error immediately and rescinded her edict. Even so, it took the personal interventiono Chairman Rense and Director Bas themselves to solve theburgeoning crisis.

    Since then, the Empress has become a much more astute andpragmatic leader. Te biggest challenge she has aced is in dealingwith a society growing increasingly renetic thanks to its buildingswarming urges. Now, however, thanks to the success ul ormationo the Zenian League, she can a ord to loosen the shackles upon

    her restive people.

    Te Relthoza have exploded out o the Reach with the orce o atornado on an unprepared town. Alongside the Dindrenzi and thelesser powers o Zenian League, they have sliced into the galacticsouth o the Storm Zone and deeply into Sorylian space itsel .

    MILITARY ASSETS AND TECHNOLOGYTe Relthoza make very e ective space arers. Teir physical ormsadapt well to a lower gravity environment and their ability to scalesheer sur aces comes into its own.

    Te outer shells o Relthoza vessels are mostly constructedrom thermally-bonded rock and metal ores, giving them their

    characteristic angular shapes. Tese substances are very hard, butalso quite brittle, and can shatter under heavy impacts.

    However, this apparently vulnerability is tempered by animportant actor. Te Relthoza are the galaxys most skilledmanipulators o nantechnology. Nanobots are tasked with ahuge number o di erent roles. Many are employed in repairingdamaged cra , using excess matter rom one part o the ship tomake good damage to another. Tese nanites can also cannibalisematerial rom other sources to abricate new materials and otheressential supplies.

    Tis process o molecular reconstruction is used to provide uelor the Relthozas powerplants. Like the Dindrenzi, they use high-

    energy Cyrion crystal batteries. But their nanites are capable o rapidly abricating raw Cyrion rom other resources. Te nanites also play a key role in the main armament o Relthozancra . Like the Sorylians, the Relthoza mount the bulk o thewarship weaponry upon a vessels broadsides. However, the natureo the weapons themselves is unique.

    Te Relthoza eets employ power ul hydroxide cannons, withrank upon rank o apertures piercing the anks o their cra .Tese cannons ash- reeze water into rock hard needles, lacedwith special o ensive nanites.
