Introduction Based on the problem statement, teams are to come up with a solution and

an implementation proposal on the problem statement. We welcome

hardware solution like an innovative new gadget or a software solution like a

mobile app. Data science or data analytics solutions are also welcomed.

Please refer to the Problem Statement Info Pack for more information.

Event Conduct In view of the COVID-19 Safe Management Measures, the competition will be

held fully online from 21 June 2021 to 3 July 2021. Teams are reminded to

adhere to existing government regulations if they self-organise any physical

meeting.

Teams are encouraged to make use of digital tools to substitute physical

prototypes if physical meet ups are not practicable. Teams may also contact

the Point of Contact of their institution for additional resources and support.

On 3 July 2021, teams should be present from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Teams will be

allocated presentation timeslots on the day. Before and after the presentation,

teams will be able to listen to other presentations within the same panel.

Participants should be physically present by 2:30pm for the closing ceremony

and prize presentation.

Judging Conduct on Judging Day cum Closing Ceremony Date: 3 July 2021 (Saturday)

Time: 09:30am to 10:00am (Opening and Briefing) – Participants need to join by 9:25am 10:00am to 2:30pm (Pitching)

2:30pm to 4:30pm (Closing Ceremony)

Conduct: Zoom (link will be sent closer to the date)

Judging: 15-min timeslot for each team (5 min pitch + 10 min Q&A) No requirement to have all team members to pitch, but all should be present

Judging Panel: Each team will be assigned to 1 of the 4 judging panel

Pitching Style: Pitch deck Teams are also encouraged to design a simple design prototype to illustrate your idea. Team will be allowed to conduct “screen share” in the Zoom platform. Teams should take into consideration internet bandwidth required for screensharing of videos etc.

Judging Rubrics All ideas are evaluated based on 3 areas:

1. Creativity/Novelty Are there similar solutions in the market? If so, how novel is your solution compared to that available outside now? 2. Technical Feasibility Are your hardware and software requirements well addressed? How feasible is the food waste reduction technology proposed? Have you considered the durability and life cycle management of your product? 3. Community Feasibility Could your solution be easily adopted by the target users? What is the scale and the long-term sustainability of the social impact?

Sean Goh is currently the General Manager of Uglyfood, a company that creates content to promote sustainable living and sells excess/blemished fresh produce. He brings with him over 12 years of MNC experience from Shell, in business strategies, supply chain ecosystems and business workflows.

Sean believes that high impact companies and social enterprises will be the main focus for thematic investing in the coming decade. Outside of work, he enjoys keeping abreast with developments in real estate and education.

He has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics & Marketing from Washington University in St Louis. Sean Goh

Teng Ting Shien Researcher

NTU FST

Ting Shien graduated from NTU with a Bioengineering degree. During his undergraduate years, he worked on a dielectric actuator model that was intended for implementation on heart stent operation. After two years of working, he decided to embark on a PhD programme. Ting Shien is currently working on the development of cell culture media with fermented food waste and is looking to apply the final product on cultivated meat production.

Before his current project, Ting Shien have also worked on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and gut microbiome research. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing the piano and occasionally, computer games.

Prof. Yeo Kiat Seng Associate Provost

Research and International Relations SUTD

Professor Yeo Kiat Seng received his B.Eng. (EE) in 1993, and Ph.D. (EE) in 1996 both from Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Currently, he is Associate Provost for Research and International Relations at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Professor Yeo is a widely known authority in low-power RF/mm-wave IC design and a recognized expert in CMOS technology. He was a Member of Board of Advisors of the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association. Before his appointment at SUTD, he was Associate Chair (Research), Head of Division of Circuits and Systems and Founding Director of VIRTUS of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at NTU.

Prof. Yeo has published 10 books, 7 book chapters, over 600 international top-tier refereed journal and conference papers and holds 38 patents. Professor Yeo holds/held key positions in many international conferences as Advisor, General Chair, Co-General Chair and Technical Chair. He was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) on National Day 2009 by the President of the Republic of Singapore and the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award in 2009 for his outstanding contributions to the university and society. Professor Yeo is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to low-power integrated circuit design. He is the principal author of World University Research Rankings (WURR) 2020.

Paul Chong is the Operations Director for Malaysia and Singapore at Sodexo. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the provision of food and facilities management services to Sodexo’s clients and consumers in Malaysia and Singapore. Sodexo delivers quality of life to clients in diverse environments such as corporate offices, hospitals, schools, and remote sites. He leads the team to drive process improvement and achieve strategic growth objectives. Paul joined Sodexo in November 2018.

A strong believer in giving back to the community, Paul has also been the co-chairperson of Sodexo’s Servathon committee since 2020. The Servathon committee collaborates with Sodexo’s ecosystem of employees, clients, consumers, and partners to tackle food insecurity. His leadership has steered the Servathon committee in Singapore through the challenging COVID-19 situation, to continue with giving initiatives such as food distribution drives and virtual fundraisers.

Paul has more than 20 years’ experience in the Food & Beverage and Hospitality industry, overseeing operations spanning across restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels, casinos, and MICE. He was previously with Food Republic under the BreadTalk Group, overseeing the operations for Singapore.

Amanda Voo Researcher

NTU FST

Amanda Voo graduated from a pure chemistry background (CBC, NTU) with a 2nd major in food science and technology (FST-NTU). The interdisciplinary nature and global relevance of food science and research attracts her, as sustainable food production continues to be a pressing issue. Thus, she continued her postgraduate education under the direction of Prof William Chen as a research student, contributing to the field of algae as alternative protein and algaecides.

Recent interest includes experimenting with cellulose scaffold for 3D cellular agriculture. During her 2nd year of graduate study, Amanda picked up violin and ballet as an adult learner, mainly as a creative outlet and to decompress from the stress of research work. She also enjoys learning foreign language, with rudimentary knowledge of French and Russian.

Sean Tan is the Vice chairman for the Toa Payoh East Constituency Citizens Consultative Committee. In his position, he oversaw the organisation of various community-based initiatives. He graduated from NTU with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and spent 12 years in ExxonMobil overseeing the maintenance work of ExxonMobil’s assets.

Sean Tan is now the Director of ilet Pte Ltd, a company that delivers product design, building and home renovation and maintenance.

Pei Shan believes strongly in developing self-awareness and looking within ourselves to reach our potential. She is the co-founder of UglyFood – a social enterprise with the aim of reducing food waste. This is achieved by changing people's mindsets and by procuring surplus and blemished fresh produce and turning them into food products or resell as fresh produce. To date, UglyFood has collectively sold a total of up to 120 tonnes of “ugly” food. She has since left the company but is continuing to inspire people to maximise the value of food resources and make sustainable choices.

Pei Shan currently is also a facilitator under Pivotal Youth to nurture youths into leaders and a volunteer at Ground-Up Initiative and Green Monday. Pei Shan

Dr Patrick S.K. Chua Associate Professor

Engineering Cluster SIT

Dr Patrick S.K. Chua was awarded his PhD degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Liverpool, U.K., for his research work on heavy gas dispersion, under a scholarship from British Gas Corporation (U.K.).

Upon returning to Singapore, he worked in the industry for several years before joining academia. He has taught many courses as well as having supervised several hundred undergraduates in their projects. He has also supervised master’s degree students, PhD students and research fellows in their applied research work. He received the long service award from the minister for education in 2018.

Dr Chua’s applied research interests are in the areas of energy, industrial automation/assembly, mechanical design, wildlife (especially birds) trapping techniques, urban vertical farming, and pneumatic/hydraulic power technology. He has published about 150 technical papers in international conferences and journals as well as two book chapters. He has been on the local conference advisory panels/organising committees as well as having chaired technical sessions of conferences in Singapore and Japan. He is a member of the Engineering Advisory Committee of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (U.K.), and a chartered engineer (U.K.).

Edmund Gu is a Safety Manager with over 10 years’ experience across marine, construction, healthcare and manufacturing industries in areas of workplace safety, business continuity and regulatory compliance.

On a non-professional front, Edmund participate actively in the field of civic engagements, volunteering at People’s Association as the Vice-Chairman of Toa Payoh East Citizens’ Consultative Committee and the Council Member of the Central Youth Council at People’s Association Youth Movement. He currently serves on the School Advisory Committee at Deyi Secondary School.

David Lee Chairman

David Lee is the Chairman of Toa Payoh East Community Emergency & Engagement Committee (C2E) and the Vice-Chairman of Toa Payoh East Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC). In his work as a Grassroots Leader, he has spearheaded efforts to continuously recruit and retain trained volunteers in basic first aid, fire-fighting and emergency preparedness within the community. This ensures an effective first-level response on the ground in the event of any localised emergencies.

David’s full-time job is to serve as the Broking Director of Windward Insurance Broker Pte. Ltd, a professional company providing insurance broking service and risk management advisory globally. He graduated from National University of Singapore in 1993 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.

Mr Kuik oversees the research and development division at Sembcorp Marine and is responsible for developing new technologies, product innovations and solutions. Mr Kuik was appointed as the Secretariat of Sembcorp Marine’s Sustainability Council in 2016 when the Council was formed to manage the Group’s sustainability programmes. He is responsible for the Group’s sustainability strategy and policies, including overseeing the alignment of Sembcorp Marine’s Economic, Environment, Social and Governance programmes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Mr Kuik also contributes to the local maritime community in his capacity as the President of the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI). He also serves as a member of various major industrial councils, research institutions and educational institution committees.

In his spare time, Mr Kuik enjoys hiking which gives him the opportunity to appreciate nature. From September to March, he looks forward to spotting migratory birds from the Northern hemisphere taking refuge in Singapore to escape the cold winter.

Mr Kuik holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) in Naval Architecture & Marine Technology from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK, and an MBA from Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Ng Kuan Rei Research Fellow

NTU FST

Kuan Rei is a graduate of the NTU-WUR joint PhD programme in food science and technology, and currently working as a Research Fellow in FST@NTU.

His work focuses on sustainable production of plant-based food preservatives, microbial engineering for food applications and other novel food valorization technologies. He was part of the NTU-Alterpacks team that were Grand Finalists in the Liveability Challenge 2020 (hosted and funded by Temasek Foundation), featuring circular packaging solutions derived from seafood waste.

His other core interests are clean fuel technologies, carbon capture solutions and circular economies. In his free time, he enjoys food, music and both traditional and E-sports.
