coachinRaidershistoryonJan.30,2012,heprom-ised tofielda tough, smart,disciplinedandcom-mittedfootballteam,notingthatorganizationswingames in the National Football League by morethantalentalone.

Allen, 39, is the NFL’s youngest head coach,more than six months younger than the league’spreviouslyyoungestcoach,Pittsburgh’sMikeTom-lin.

With 16 years of combined coaching experience at the college andprofessional levels,Allen enters his 11thNFL season.On six occasionsduringhis10yearsasanNFLassistant,histeamearnedaplayoffberth:2002,2004,2006,2009,2010and2011.Andfourofthosetripscameafterdivisionchampionships:TheNFCSouthwithAtlanta in2004andNewOrleansinboth2006and2009,andtheAFCWestwithDenverin2011.

spending four seasonswith theFalcons as adefensive assistant.DuringhisstintinAtlanta,theFalconsqualifiedfortheplayoffstwice—asawildcardin2002andasNFCSouthchampsin2004—andplayedintheNFCChampionshipin2004.

Allen spent his first two yearswithAtlantaworking primarilywiththedefensivebacks.In2002,heaidedthatunitinimprovingfromNo.30againstthepassto16th,whiletyingforthirdintheNFLwith24intercep-tions.

InhisfinaltwocampaignsinAtlanta,Allenassistedincoachingade-fensive linethatproducedProBowlersPatrickKearney(2004)andRodColeman(2005).In2004,thelinehelpedtheFalconstotal48sackstoleadtheNFLforthefirsttimeinteamhistory.

Allenkickedoffhisfootballcoachingcareerin1996asagraduateas-sistantathisalmamater,TexasA&M,wherehewasafour-yearlettermanasasafety.HeworkedwithAggiesdefensivebacksforfourseasonsbeforecoachingthesecondaryattheUniversityofTulsafrom2000-01.

Oakland (AP) -- The San Diego Chargers capitalized on three botched punts following an injury to Oakland’s long snapper to beat the Raiders 22-14 Monday night.

Philip Rivers threw for 231 yards and a 6-yard touchdown to Malcom Floyd in a turnover-free game as San Diego won despite starting undrafted rookie Mike Harris at left tackle and missing starting running back Ryan Mathews and receiver Vincent Brown to injuries. San Diego protected Harris by throwing short often with 16 of Rivers’ 24 completions going to running backs and tight ends. Rivers was sacked just once and did not turn the ball over after having 20 interceptions a year ago. Oakland had its own problems with injuries. The absence of deep-threat receivers Denarius Moore (hamstring) and Jacoby Ford (left foot) left Carson Palmer mostly throwing underneath to Darren McFadden, who caught a career-high 13 passes. A head injury to Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Condo in the second quarter proved to be even more significant when backup long snapper Travis Goethel had to fill in. Early in the third quarter, the Raiders lined up to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the San Diego 48. But after a penalty for 12 men in the huddle, Oakland decided to punt. Goethel, who last

snapped in high school, rolled one back to Lechler, who was tackled for a loss, giving San Diego the ball at the Raiders 39. That set up a 28-yard field goal by Kaeding. After Oakland was stopped on its next drive, Lechler set up closer to Goethel, whose snap made it back in the air. But Dante Rosario broke through for the first block against Lechler since 2006 — a year before Condo joined the team. The Chargers once again had to settle for a short field goal and led 16-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Palmer finally got Oakland into the end zone with 54 seconds left on a 2-yard pass to rookie Rod Streater and the two connected for a 2-point conversion to make it 22-14. But San Diego recovered the onside kick and iced the game.

The Raiders had little trouble moving the ball in the first half, but could not get into the end zone and trailed 10-6 at the break. The Chargers used two long passes by Rivers and penalties by Oakland on their two scoring drives. Robert Meacham beat Ron Bartell on a 46-yard deep ball to set up Kaeding’s 23-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Rivers hit Floyd on a 23-yarder on a drive that was extended by three Oakland penalties that gave San Diego a first down, including two offside penalties by Tommy Kelly on third down. Rivers capped the drive by escap-

ing pressure and finding Floyd for a TD.

MIAMI (AP) -- Reggie Bush ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns, and the Dolphins won a home opener for the first time since 2005 by beating the Oakland Raiders 35-13.Ryan Tannehill threw his first NFL touchdown pass, ran for another and avoided any turnovers after tossing three interceptions in his pro debut a week earlier.The Dolphins improved to 1-1, and Joe Philbin earned a sideline drenching for his first victory as a head coach. The Raiders, under new coach Dennis Allen, are 0-2 for the first

time since 2007. Miami outgained Oakland on the ground 259-23.Bush broke four tackles on a 23-yard touchdown run that put the Dolphins ahead to stay in the third quarter. After they forced a punt, Bush struck again, this time on a 65-yard

Carson Palmer threw for 373 yards, but the Raiders were plagued by poor field position and managed only one touchdown -- when backup running back Mike Goodson took a swing pass and turned it into a 64-yard score.

Darren McFadden was held to 22 yards rushing and 19 receiving. The Raiders were only 1 for 12 on third-down conversions, and they had no takeaways. Tannehill went 18 for 30 for 200 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Fasano. But the rookie’s niftiest throw came as he was being tackled: Parallel to the ground, he side armed a completion for a 3-yard gain. He hit Brian Hartline nine times for 111 yards.

Bush had a career-high 26 carries and added three receptions for 25 yards. Lamar Miller carried 10 times in his NFL debut for 65 yards, including a 15-yard score to seal the victory.

The Dolphins trailed 10-7 in the third quarter before finally taking advantage of superior field position, when they had the Raiders pinned at their 1 and forced a punt that gave them the ball at the Oakland 44.

OAKLAND (AP) — Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 43-yard field goal on the last play and the Raiders scored the final 13 points after Heyward-Bey was knocked out and hospitalized by a scary hit to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-31 on Sunday. The celebration after Janikowski’s kick was in stark contrast to the pall over the stadium early in the fourth quarter when Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious by a helmet-to-helmet hit in the end zone by Steelers safety Ryan Mundy. Heyward-Bey was taken to Eden Medical Center with a concussion and neck injury. But coach Dennis Allen said he was able to move his extremities and the team said he was in stable condition. Heyward-Bey was to stay in the hospital overnight for observation.

Carson Palmer followed the injury by throwing his third touchdown pass and Janikowski kicked two field goals to beat the Steelers (1-2) and get the Raiders on track after two losses to open the season. The Raiders took over at their 25 with the game tied and 1:42 remaining. Palmer got the drive going with a 24-yard pass to Brandon Myers on third-and-10 and then hit Derek Hagan on a 17-yard pass down to the Pittsburgh 26 with 27 seconds left. Oakland then ran down the clock to set up Janikowski’s winning kick that sent the crowd into delirium less than an hour after silence overtook the stadium when Heyward-Bey was injured. Heyward-Bey managed to raise his right hand while being taken off the field on a cart to go to the hospital.

Four plays later, Palmer eluded pressure and found Denarius Moore on a 6-yard touchdown pass that brought Oakland within 31-28 early in the fourth quarter. Raiders cornerback Pat Lee then forced a fumble downfield by Pittsburgh receiver Antonio Brown that Philip Wheeler recovered at the Oakland 36. Palmer then drove the Raiders down the field and they tied the game on a 32-yard field goal by Janikowski with 6:30 to play.

Darren McFadden ran for 113 yards, including a 64-yard TD burst in the first quarter that surpassed his rushing total from the first two games of the season combined. Palmer overcame an interception on the first play of the game to go 24 for 34 for 209 yards and three touchdowns, including a 3-yarder to Heyward-Bey late in the first half. Each team converted a turn-over into a touchdown in the opening half with the Steelers taking a 17-14 lead at the break after Roethlisberger led them 64 yards in the final 1:54 with-out a timeout to set up Shaun Suisham’s 33-yard field goal on the final play.

Picking and poking with short crossing routes and screen passes against a depleted Oakland defense, Manning finished with 338 yards and three scores on 30 of 38 passing. For the second straight game, he didn’t throw an interception. Topping it off, he handed the Raiders (1-3) their worst loss in this heated AFC West rivalry in nearly a half-century.

Manning had his record-extending 65th 300-yard passing game, and Willis McGahee recorded his 32nd 100-yard rushing game, tops among active NFL players. Allen pledged to use the upcom-ing bye week to evaluate everything from schemes to personnel.

Oakland came in without injured starting cornerbacks Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer, which has forced a number of changes - none of them for the better. The Broncos gained 101 more yards than the Raiders in the first half, but only led 10-6 going into the locker room, thanks to two big blunders: a Demaryius Thomas fumble after a 40-yard recep-

tion and kicker Matt Prater’s misfire on a pass to left guard Zane Beadles on a fake field goal.Thanks to those gaffes, the Raiders came out of the tunnel for the

ATLANTA (AP) -- Overcoming three interceptions by Matt Ryan, the Falcons (6-0) extended the best start in franchise history and became the NFL’s only unbeaten team.

The pesky Raiders (1-4) bounced back from Asante Samuel’s pick to tie the game with less than a minute to go, but left a little too much time on the clock for Atlanta’s final possession.

Ryan completed four short passes, the last of them a 13-yarder to Tony Gonzalez that got Bryant in range for his longest field goal since joining the Falcons in 2009 — and his second game-winning kick in three weeks. He beat the Panthers 30-28 on a 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds left. Bryant actually missed one early, pulling a 43-yarder wide left to break a streak of 23 consecutive field goals going back to last season. He bounced back to connect from 41 and 20 yards before making the one that really mattered. After a mostly ugly game, the final 3 minutes were thrilling. Tied at 13, the Raiders were in position for a go-ahead field goal when Samuel stepped in front of Carson Palmer’s pass at the Atlanta 21 and returned it for a touchdown, racing to the end zone right in front of the Falcons’ bench.

Palmer shook off that huge mistake, leading the Raiders down the field for the tying score. He connected with Derek Hagan on a 38-yard pass to the Atlanta 5, and Darren McFadden scored on a 2-yard run with 40 seconds left. Ryan finished 24 of 37 for 249 yards and equaled his career high for picks, matching the three he had against New Orleans in 2009. Palmer was 23 of 33 for 353 yards, putting up a much better rating than Ryan. But the Raiders quarterback was kicking himself for that one devastating play: the pick by Samuel. Ryan came into the game with three interceptions in the first five weeks. He doubled his total by halftime. Joselio Hanson picked one off over the middle. Michael Huff snatched another away on a deep throw. And Tyvon Branch grabbed a fluttering ball after Ryan was hit as he threw. The Raiders seized on Branch’s interception. Palmer flipped a short pass to Denarius Moore, who took it all the way to the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown that gave Oakland a 13-7 lead at halftime.

John Abraham had a huge day on the Falcons’ defense. He sacked Palmer three times and gave Atlanta’s sputtering offense a chance to retake the lead in the third when he stripped the ball from the quarterback just before his right arm came forward. Ray Edwards scooped up the fumble and rumbled to the Oakland 2, before Oakland held Atlanta on a dramatic goal-line stand.
