The stats are certainly plenty goodenough. Brianne McClafferty isaveraging 7.47 points,

3.47 rebounds and 1.35 assists per game, with an occasional block or steal.

There’s the good 73 percent mark onher free throws and the so-so 34 percentrate on her field-goal attempts. Be sureto note, though, the outstanding 35-percent mark (17-for-48) from 3-point range.

Even as her coach, though, KerieDePell will insist that despite all thebasketball contributions McClafferty

has made to the Montana Tech women’sbasketball program the past four years, the best state, the highlight entry in theOredigger scrapbookwould likely be the 3.97grade-point average.

“She’s our best stu-dent,” DePell said of the6-foot senior from Butte, who also happens to be adaughter of the athleticdirector, Joe McClafferty,a former Montana Techbasketball player himself.“She’s represented theschool in the best light. She’s alreadyapplied for law school. She certainly willbe successful in anything she will do inlife.”

For McClafferty, herself, however, there’s the matter of a couple hyphens.

“I was an OK student in high school,”she said. “I do manage my time well(studying and playing basketball).

“After my first semester in college

ended, I had all A’s. I wondered if I couldkeep it up.”

She has, but still wishes she had donebetter. “I have a 3.97,” she grumbled.“Couple of A-minuses. Those A-minuses are killing me.”

It’s that search for perfection thatcaught DePell’s eye as she looked torecruit players for her program in firstseason at the helm.

“When I was recruiting her, she was agreat shooter and I felt she had a naturalfeel for the game,” the coach said. “Whata competitor — she wanted to win ineverything she does. I feel that’s the bigreason she’s successful (in general).”

DePell, McClafferty and the rest ofthe Oredigger contingent are 3-2 in theFrontier Conference standings and 8-9 overall heading into this weekend’sset of league games at home versusRocky Mountain (3-2, 14-6) and Carroll(1-4, 8-10) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Tip-offs are set for 5:30 p.m. both nights.

Montana Tech is riding a three-gamewinning streak.

“It was a good two weeks for us,”

McClafferty said. “Last week (against MontanaWestern) was a really good win for us. We were lookingfor some revenge after a disappointing loss to them inNovermber.

“We’re a young team. We have only two seniors. Westart three sophomores and a freshman (and seniorpoint guard Tabitha Tomlinson). It took a while for usto find our identity and what our roles are. We figuredwe’re more of a defensive team.”

McClafferty was starting early in the season, butbegan coming off the bench last month. She said shelikes the role and DePell said she likes McClafferty init.

“When I stopped starting this year is when I actually started playing better,” McClafferty said. “I’mplaying more now that I’m not starting, because of the rotations. I was averaging 20 minutes a game as astarter and now average about 25 as a non-starter.

“I get to watch (the early part of) the game frm thebench, get the feel of it and see what I can do onoffense. I think you tend to forget about the girls on thebench, sometimes. I almost like it.”

The emergence of freshman scorer Mandy Machinalinstigated the change, the one that brings McClaffertyoff the bench.

Machinal scored 37 in the win over Western andshot her way into the lineup in the pre-conference season.

“Kerie told me in California (during a post-Christmas tournament) I’m not starting,” McClaffertysaid. “I was fine with it and went out and had my twobest games of the season.”

Included was a double-double, 10 points and 10rebounds versus Hope International.

“(DePell) told me she’s not starting me again,”McClafferty said with a laugh.

The willingness to yield the starting spot as a seniorto a freshman is exemplary, DePell said.

“She’s definitely played a variety of roles for us,”DePell said. “When she first got to college, she cameoff the bench and gave us a spark, hitting some 3s.Now, she’s grown into a really important role on ourteam.

“We decided to start Mandy and Brianne’s attitudewas amazing. She said she would embrace coming offthe bench and if that was the best thing for the team, that’s what she wanted to do. Now, she is a much-needed offensive threat and gives us much neededleadership and poise.”

She brjngs enthusiasm, too.“Mandy was unreal,” McClafferty said about

Machinal’s performance against Western. “Every timeshe shot the ball, I just figured it I wasn’t going to need

The knot couldn’t be much tighter, asthe Frontier Conference basketballschedule nears its halfway point.

The Montana Tech Orediggers playhost this weekend to Rocky MountainCollege and Carroll College, marking theend of the first round of the home-and-home series for the eight-team leagues.Tech takes on the Rocky Battlin’ BearsFriday, then entertains rival Carroll onSaturday.

Women’s games tip off at 5:30 p.m.both evenings, while the men are slatedfor 7:30 p.m. starts. All games are playedon the Kelvin Sampson Court of Tech’s“Great Western” HPER Complex.

In addition, the Tech men will cele-brate “Senior Night” prior to Saturday’sgame.

The women’s Frontier leaderboardhas Lewis-Clark State and Westminstertied for first with 4-1 records, whileTech and Rocky — Friday’s opponents —are deadlocked in a two-way tie forthird, each sporting a 3-2 ledger.

Montana Western and MSU-Northern are tied for fifth with 2-3records, while Carroll and Great Falls areboth 1-4.

“The Frontier has always been close,”said Montana Tech women’s head coachKerie DePell. “This year is no exception. There’s always that element of surpriseand excitement after our games when wecan look at the other scores in the con-ference.”

Rocky Mountain’s women’s team iscoming off a very successful weekendwhere the Bears soundly defeated bothGreat Falls and MSU-Northern inBillings. A win over Rocky on Fridaywould move the Orediggers a step closerto the team’s goal of qualifying for theNational tourney a third year in a row.

“Rocky is a very good team, and we’regoing in with a serious attitude,” DePellsaid.

The Bears have averaged 72 points pergame while allowing 63 this season.Rocky got 17 points from Brittany Kummand 15 more from Alli Blake in a veryconvincing 23-point win over

Northern Saturday.Saturday’s game against Carroll

presents a different challenge, as theSaints routinely bring plenty of fight tothe floor.

“Records won’t matter Saturday,”DePell said. “Carroll-Tech rivalry ismore than just football, and even thoughCarroll’s been depleted by injuries, we’llneed to be at our best.”

The Saints are coming off their firstFrontier win of the season, a 73-60 winover Great Falls. Torrie Cahill went offfor 21 points, while Jeni Guertin tallied14 points and nine rebounds in theCarroll victory.

DePell’s young team has cometogether more quickly than she expectedthis season, as was clearly shown in theOrediggers’ win over Montana Westernlast Saturday at the HPER. Tech got ahuge 37-point performance from fresh-man guard Mandy Machinal, and saw

excellent play from Bryn Hasquet andKelsey DeWit as well.

“Our offense has really come along,”DePell said. “Our youth and inexperi-ence lends itself to defense, but notoffense. The defense has been there forus, but our team offense last weekendwas very good, and not just Mandy.”

Tech men’s coach Aaron Woliczko isfond of referring to his team’s easiestday as yesterday.

That’s the case again as theOrediggers are in for another importantweekend of Frontier play. Following atough loss to Montana Western Saturday

at the HPER where a Tech comebackattempt fell just short.

The win gave Western a 4-1 record, aNo. 20 national ranking, and a first-place tie with No. 13 MSU-Northern.

Tech fell to 2-3, but the Orediggersare far from alone, as the record putthem in a six-way tie for third place.

“We have to remember that anyonecan beat anyone,” Woliczko said. “TheFrontier is arguably one of the best con-ferences in the NAIA, but there’s somuch basketball left. Teams can’t beworried they’re 2-3, and they can’t becomfortable at 4-1.”

The Orediggers begin the weekend onFriday against a hungry Rocky Mountainteam that dropped games to Great Fallsand MSU-Northern last weekend.

Saturday night’s game pits Techagainst a Carroll team that handedNorthern its only Frontier defeat of theseason, then turned around and fell toGreat Falls two nights later. Both of theweekend’s opponents pose problems forthe Orediggers.

“Rocky Mountain and Carroll both

have a strong inside game and they’retough matchups for us,” Woliczko said.“We’ll have to throw the kitchen sink atthem defensively to combat their size.”

Rocky suffered a 73-45 loss toNorthern Saturday, but got a sound 11-point showing from Matt Fogarty, whileSergio Trocha netted eight points and 11rebounds.

In their 60-51 loss to Great FallsSaturday, Carroll saw Ben Cutler puttogether a 17-point game, while JamesMacIntyre hit for eight points and 10rebounds.

Montana Tech got another great gamefrom senior Tyree Haynie, who scored19 points — mostly in the stretch —against Western.

Woliczko is happy to be home againat the HPER, as he marveled at thecrowd and atmosphere last Saturday.

“From what I’ve been told, that wasmaybe the best crowd in the last 10years,” said Woliczko, who is in his second year leading the Orediggers. “Itwas just raucous.

Senior Night will be held to accom-modate other events going on duringTech’s final scheduled home games intwo weeks. The ceremony will honorTech’s three players who are in their lastseason competing for the Orediggers —Cole Conway, Tyree Haynie and A.J. Paine.

“It’s my goal to surround myself withgreat kids,” Woliczko said. “I knewTyree before I came here, and I’ve gottento know Cole and A.J. very well.”

Woliczko recalled his first meetingwith Conway, who underwent surgerythe morning of the then-prospectivecoach’s interview.

“Cole’s been struggling with injuries, but he’s so tough,”Woliczko said. “A.J.and I have great communication, andI’m so impressed with all he’s able to do.Ty was second-team all conference lastyear which is quite an accomplishmentin this league.”

The versatility has been an unexpected plus. “She’s basically playedtwo through five (shooting guard topost) for us,” DePell said. “Most peopledon’t play more than one position. She’svery versatile and very valuable to ourteam in a lot of ways.”

“In high school, I was more of a guard— a two or a three (small forward),”McClafferty said. “Now, sometimes I gofrom guarding the 6-(foot)-1, 230(-pound) post to the point guard. Anyspot, if that’s what we need, I’m willing.”

The player will graduate with adegree in business management soon. She is hoping to attend law school at theUniversity of Montana. She likes schooland it seems it might be a signal to continue her education, while the desirefor it still burns.

“It’s been a great fit,” she said. “I lovethe environment at Tech, how it is informal with the professors who areconcerned with your learning. They’rereally helpful. They work with us andspend extra time with us.

“It’s nice to be in small classroomsizes. You’re able to have classroom dis-cussions everyday. (The instructors) arereally awesme about helping you getinternships and helping me try to get intolaw school. They want you to succeed.”

So, a difficult time in her life isapproaching.

“It is going to be tough to leave,”McClafferty acknowledged. “That’s whyI don’t want to start in the real worldyet. It is such a great experience inschool.

“But it will be so weird to not beplaying basketball — hanging out in thelocker room and training room and talk-ing with teammates. I’ve always beenaround it. Ever since I was little, it’sbeen a big part of my life. When it’sgone, it’s going to be crazy.”

McClafferty said she is consideringadministrative possibilities, or maybe acareer as a sports agent, somethinginvolving her gaining knowledge in business and law. She might still play, too, in pickup leagues and so forth.

Basketball has filled a lot of memoryspace.

“Going to nationals has definitelybeen the highlight of my career,” shesaid. Two years ago, it was awesomebecause we had never been there before.

Last year, when we went, we didn’tthink we would be going.

“We had already said our goodbyes,to the ones leaving and even to ourassistant coach (Michele Van Dyk), whowas leaving at the end of the season, too. Then I was at home on the computer, watching the (NAIA Tournament) selections as they filled the bracket. Ikept hitting the refresh button and ourname popped up.”

The crowds will be missed, too. Acouple McClafferty remembers are thestate-record attendance turnout forButte High’s state championship game atthe Civic Center her senior year, and lastweekend’s rivalry renewal with Western.

“It was awesome to see all that purplein the stands (in the high school game),”McClafferty remembered. “Butte alwayssupports. I’ve always felt it was specialto play in Butte.”

Missoula Big Sky edged Butte High 69-60 that state championship gameand Machinal led the Orediggers pastWestern this past weekend.

“Our preseason was really, reallytough,” McClafferty said. “It is hard beingyoung, too. We went into the conferencewithout the awesome record, but (DePell)told us we’d be all right and we’d competewith any team in the conference.

“We still have the goal of getting backto nationals. I’m excited for the lastTech-Carroll game at home and achance to move into third place. We’retied with Rocky, and Rocky has beengetting (natioal Top 25) votes.”

McClafferty pointed out that theOrediggers upset Montana State-Northern and Western after each hadreceived attention from the polls.

“Now, we have to knock off Rocky, too,” she said.

McClafferty and her dad collaboratedon the Charlie Oredigger book beingsold on campus and around town, andalso have been involved in the Spectator magazine found on local racks.

They’ve also collaborated on hercareer. While the daughter practiced hershooing, the father rebounded andcoached. Hours passed.

The basketball ritual still continues inthe McClafferty family.

“He says when I’m done with collegebasketball, I have to rebound for himbecause he rebounded for me for somany years,” Brianne McClafferty said.“My little brother (6-foot-6 Gabe) is asophomore at Butte High and plays. I’llbe in the gym with him.

“I used to be able to beat him, butnow he blocks every shot I take.”
