Dear readers,

In a few weeks, we will bid goodbye to 2012 and welcome 2013 with high hopes and soaring aspirations. Here at LTP, we have been hard at work in cultivating and strengthening the partnerships we have with our customers.

Our solid record of good performance and consistent service delivery earned us the opportunity to extend our services agreement with Virgin Atlantic Airways, further validating our promise of quality and cost-effective services to customers (p. 4). We remain on-track with our series of cabin reconfigurations on several Qantas A380s as a result of our close collaboration with Qantas (p. 6). The fulfilment and release of seven Philippine Airlines’ aircraft undergoing base maintenance checks continue thereby proving our unwavering commitment to provide reliable and trustworthy service (p. 7).

Partnership also played a key role last September when Qantas generously offered donations to displaced Filipino families in the midst of strong rains and flash floods in Laguna, south of Manila (p. 10).

Our strength as a company lies in the relationships we have with you, our customers; with the communities where we operate our business; and with our people, our greatest asset. We close the year and look back at our journey as a company – a journey marked by milestones as a result of the mutual trust and continued partnership with you. We extend our gratitude and heartfelt thanks for allowing us to be part of your own journey in 2012.

On a personal note, it feels great to be back in Manila. It was almost nine years ago when I was part of the pioneer team that established our operations here. Since then, LTP has earned recognition as the expert and leading provider of aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul services.

We look forward to 2013 and set our sights ahead to build futures with you. Have a safe and meaningful celebration of the holidays!

Sincerely yours, Rainer

Virgin Atlantic Airways extends A340 base maintenance contract with LTP

Virgin Atlantic Airways has recently inked an extension to year 2019 of its existing base maintenance contract with Lufthansa Technik Philippines. The agreement will cover a series of C-checks and C4/C8 heavy checks involving the carrier’s Airbus A340 fleet.

“Our solid partnership with Lufthansa Technik Philippines was tested over time and yielded great improvements in the delivery and quality of service. We trust that with this extension, we would be working ever more closely towards

the safety and reliability of our fleet,” said Phil Maher, Virgin Atlantic Director of Engineering.

Virgin Atlantic continues to express full confidence in LTP as the carrier entrusts its entire A340 fleet under an extended long-term agreement.

“The years of delivering committed value and service to one of our long-time partners, Virgin Atlantic Airways, give stronger validation to our promise of providing safe and reliable airline operations to our global customers through

quality and cost-effective services that strictly adhere to international industry regulations and Lufthansa Technik standards. We thank Virgin Atlantic for continuously believing that LTP is a partner they can rely on,” says Sebastian Radeke, LTP Senior Sales Executive & Business Development - Base Maintenance.

The initial agreement signed in 2008 is a five-year deal covering base maintenance services for the entire Airbus A340 fleet of Virgin Atlantic. In its first year

alone, LTP had successfully carried out 19 C-checks and heavy maintenance checks for the A340 aircraft of the British operator. Highly significant to these events were the Frame 47 modification tasks performed on the aircraft which were done in close collaboration with Airbus technicians.

By the end of 2011, a total of 65 maintenance events were fulfilled by LTP for the Virgin Atlantic fleet. The success of these layovers not only reflected LTP’s high

level of expertise in base maintenance of the Airbus A340 but also highlighted the benefits of long-term partnerships. To fully support the maintenance events of Virgin Atlantic, LTP has a dedicated team and production line for the exclusive use of the carrier’s A340 fleet. By closely working together, every successful check was complemented by constant improvements in meeting shorter turnaround times.

Virgin Atlantic Airways operates one

of the world’s youngest fleets of aircraft today comprising a mix of Boeing and Airbus widebodies. It has more than twenty Airbus A340s consisting of the -300 and -600 series. Aside from being the biggest operator of the A340-600 in the world, Virgin Altantic is also the launch operator of this aircraft type.

High five on LTP’s A380 capability Successful results continue with cabin reconfiguration tasks on the world’s largest passenger aircraft

The first quarter of the year had started out big for Lufthansa Technik Philippines with the opening of its biggest widebody hangar which can accommodate today’s most technologically-advanced aircraft type.

It wasn’t long enough until LTP’s first customer for the Airbus A380 rolled into the brand new hangar for cabin reconfiguration tasks. An excellent collaboration between LTP and airline customer Qantas Airways had been significant to the success in reconfiguring the cabin into a new four-class seat layout of 14P/64J/35W/371Y. This expertise was further proven after carrying out a wing-rib repair for the A380. Having accomplished these tasks manifests not only LTP’s capability in maintenance of the Airbus aircraft, but also the extensive know-how on structural repairs.

Following the first Airbus A380 from Qantas Airways, four more of the world’s largest commercial aircraft were sent to Manila’s facility for the same cabin reconfiguration tasks and scope. These layover events were done in parallel with tasks on wing-rib repair.

“We always see improvements with every layover, both in performance of our technical personnel, and in terms of meeting shorter turnaround times. All this was made possible through great planning, project management and teamwork among involved parties namely Qantas, LTP, Airbus and cabin suppliers. We extremely value this working cooperation and are proud to be the maintenance provider of choice by Qantas for this cabin modification project,” shares Sebastian Radeke, LTP Senior Sales Executive and Business Development – Base Maintenance.

To complete LTP’s capability build-up on the A380, three batches of employees were previously sent to Lufthansa Technik Frankfurt and Lufthansa Technical Training Frankfurt for in-depth training on the A380 aircraft. Mechanics and engineers were able to get hands-on experience on actual C-checks and base maintenance events of the aircraft type. Further training was also extended at the Lufthansa Technical Training Philippines.

LTP’s launch customer for the expanded capability now has five Airbus A380s from the campaign equipped with a new four-class configuration with reduced seats on its business class and more seats on its premium economy and economy class. Qantas Airways will continue to send seven more A380s until the second quarter of next year for the same cabin layout.

From 7 to 777LTP’s relationship with key customer Philippine Airlines continues with the recent maintenance checks on seven of the flag carrier’s aircraft and the welcoming of its new B777.

Of the seven aircraft welcomed in the LTP hangars at the final quarter of 2012, two PAL Airbus A320s successfully concluded C1-checks. Layovers for the remaining three A330s, an A320 and an A319 aircraft are underway with LTP performing C1- and D1-checks as well as additional work based on minor findings. This November, PAL blessed another aircraft, a brand new Boeing 777-300ER.

Earlier this year, LTP performed C-checks for two of the flag carrier’s A320s which were also released into service on time. In addition, two PAL Airbus A320-200 and a Boeing 777-300ER were given ceremonial blessings at LTP.

Indeed, 2012 has been a promising and productive year for Lufthansa Technik Philippines and for its key customer Philippine Airlines.

Mabuhay Germany 2012A blend of German fun and culture in the Philippines

Once a year, German and Filipino communities come together in one place for a grand three-day event where activities like games, programs and exhibitions build stronger ties not just among different organizations but also between locals and German nationals.

Now on its fifth year, Mabuhay Germany 2012 was flocked by more than 10,000 visitors at the Bonifacio High Street, Global City Taguig.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) was one of the thirty-two exhibitors during the three-day event which ran from October 12-13, 2012. LTP’s participation highlighted its A380 capability through the booth set-up and video presentations. Adding flavor to the exhibit was the Scavenger Hunt requiring exhibitors for a game to offer

visitors and passers-by. LTP created a mini golf platform as

its main game attraction which was immensely enjoyed by many. In addition, the life vest demo offered guests to try on a real aircraft life vest and learn about its use and safety during flight emergencies.

The Lufthansa group was also well-represented as Lufthansa German Airlines showcased its products and services beside the LTP booth.

Mabuhay Germany is organized by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI). It is one of GPCCI’s main events aimed to promote and strengthen relationships between the Philippines and Germany through an interesting mix of business, culture and fun activities.

Jeju Air signs up anew with LTP

Jeju Air has renewed its partnership with Lufthansa Technik Philippines. LTP will

continue to provide technical assistance to the airline’s Boeing B737-800 as it flies to Manila six times a week. The contract started in November 2012 and will continue well into 2013.

LTP’s expertise with low cost carriers or LCCs is backed by years of experience in adapting to and delivering the needs of its various LCC customers for line and base maintenance. LTP and Jeju Air began their partnership in 2010 when the airline launched new flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 in Manila. Since then, LTP has rendered line maintenance to its B373-800 aircraft.

Based in Jeju Air Jeju City, Jeju-do, South Korea, the airline introduced its domestic flights in 2006. Eventually it expanded and launched international flights covering major cities from South Korea to Japan, China, Thailand, Guam. Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines. To date, the Jeju Air fleet consists of 11 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Continued partnership with Gulf AirGulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, has signed up with LTP for three more years. In the three-year agreement, LTP will continue to render Release to Service (RTS) on the airline’s Airbus A330 with flights eight times weekly between Bahrain and Manila.

Gulf Air became Lufthansa Technik Philippines’ first Middle Eastern airline base maintenance customer in 2006. In 2008, the airline was welcomed to LTP’s roster of line maintenance customers. Aside from line and base maintenance, LTP has also provided Aircraft on Ground (AOG) support to Gulf Air. Gulf Air was established in 1950 and flies to 46 cities in 29 countries.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) and Kimberly-Clark Professional (KCP) joined together in a two-day event in Xiamen, China highlighting LEAN practices and implementation.

Held last September 14 and 15, the program was participated by LEAN specialists from both LTP and Lufthansa Technik Shenzen to work with Kimberly-Clark Professionals. This collaboration aimed to promote efficiency as KCP rolls out an Efficient Work Place system.

The first day of the activity provided a platform for different KCP teams to brainstorm on ideas and processes for the improvement of the workplace. This was applied in a role-play activity where the LTP team assumed the role of a company, with KCP teams presenting their own proposals to improve the efficiency of the said organization.

Each team received an evaluation of their ideas and presentation through an interesting discussion among participants.

Teams were asked about how they were able to formulate their project proposals and how their implementation will go about. After a deliberation process, the best teams were recognized through an awarding ceremony. This part of the program was also dedicated for a more in-depth exchange of ideas with the LEAN practitioners of LTP. Important aspects of LEAN were shared, as well as strategies involved to achieve desired results.

The second day continued to provide more insights to KCP as the LTP team conducted a talk on LEAN implementation

and activities. LTP’s own journey in adopting the LEAN system from the beginning towards the different phases of challenges it encountered was also shared with the participants. Topic highlights included LTP’s LEAN activities with KCP, as well as with other organizations like Airbus.

For a more visual understanding of the LEAN system, a Lego

game workshop was facilitated for the participants to fully grasp the concept of process optimization and LEAN which both can lead to process improvement. The LTP team earned a positive response from the KCP participants for the imparted knowledge most especially with identifying non-value added processes and eliminating process wastes.

The seminar was the third LEAN activity conducted by LTP for KCP. This collaboration allowed for a good learning experience from both sides ever since it started teaming up for LEAN programs.

The Philippines is frequently visited by monsoon rains and typhoons which often displace families in rural areas. Because of this, Filipinos have learned to be resilient and to stand united against the worst situations. It is also in trying times like this that heartening and sometimes unexpected acts of kindness pour in.

Last August, heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides in low-lying areas and coastal towns, resulting in vast power outages and evacuation of families. It took weeks before families could return to their homes and clean-up the mud and debris brought about by the floods.

Being a socially responsible company,

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) organized relief operations in September to provide immediate assistance to affected families located at Barangay Sto. Domingo in Los Baños and Barangay Landayan in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines. These two towns were among many other badly affected areas in Manila and nearby provinces. Hearing about this effort by the company, Qantas Airways Limited generously donated goods and supplies to support relief operations.

LTP employees also handed cash donations and the total amount raised was matched and doubled by LTP management. The funds were allocated to

buy goods and necessities such as canned goods, coffee and milk, bath and laundry soap, and bottled water. Qantas contributed the bulk of the relief goods which included blankets, sleeper suits, biscuits, instant noodles, and bottled water which all helped the evacuees a great deal. A group of volunteer employees and interns visited the sites and distributed the supplies to around 570 families in Sto. Domingo and Landayan.

In addition to regular corporate social responsibility projects that focus on fostering education in the country, LTP also holds relief efforts for emergencies brought on by calamities.
