Reverend Lawrence G. Sieber's Papers
Relating primarily to the Superintendency of Home Missions in the British
Columbia Conference of the United Church of Canada.
Introduction
These papers which were generated in the offices of the Home Mission,
the Superintendent and the numerous field offices within the B.C. Confer-
rence and are concerned with mission work, hospitals, Marine Mission,
Indian work, ethnic group work and pastoral charge. Reverend Lawrence G.
Sieber has been very active in these fields as minister in the Alberta
Conference in his early years and since 1943 in the B.C. Conference. He
also held the office of secretary in St. Paul Presbytery and Statistical
secretary in Edmonton Presbytery. His appointment.to Superintendent in
1963 gave him much wider scope to follow these early interests and that
post which he held for ten years was the culmination of a long and caring
career in the service of the church and the people. He still lives in
Richmond and has been involved in an oral history and supply ministering.
The Home Mission has been active in many ventures to bring the church
to the people in the rugged and unapproachable places along the coast and
inland, to Non Indian~and Indian alike, to settlers and transient popula-
tions like workcamps. Times have changed maybe slower in these regions,
but some changes have had much farther reaching effects than could be fore-
seen. On the whole the church has moved with the times and tailored the
service provided to the needs perceived. This might include letting the
Indian Communities decide matters for themselves and do it their way,
change the 'base* for the mission boats to accommodate waning populations
as in Ocean Falls and all the time supporting, understanding, caring for
the welfare of body and spirit with people, goods and money. Some ventures
were halted, some discontinued and some have been handed over to the com-
munity like the Burns Lake Hospital. Many people have worked in the field
of Home Missions and many have been helped by their diligence, all the
time supported by the office of the superintendent. No matter was too small
or unimportant, whether policy making, planning, finding new personnel or
pension payments. Strong links with the Toi'onto Headoffice are evidently
maintained at all times.

Reverend Lawrence G. Sicber's Papers
Biographical Sketch
Reverend G. Sieber'admits that the Ministerial Record in the personal
file gives a very one-sided picture of a dedicated minister in the United
Church of Canada, and that a fuller account has gone to the head office
in Toronto without his obtaining a copy of it. The transcripts of an
interview, where he speaks to Reverend R.J.Love on February 15, 1979, about
his early boyhood in Ontario, education and first pastorates in Alberta
and later in the British Columbia Conference, give a more human account
of the minister, the friend and the family man, as well as the work he was
so involved in. Ethnic work figured early in his career: Ukranian near
Edmonton, Japanese in Kamloops-Okanagan, and then his industrial
chaplaincy in the workcamps and the Indian work in Prince Rupert Presbytery
and in Vancouver. At the time of his pastorate in Prince Rupert the work
involvement with the Home Mission began for Reverend Sieber and after
his appointment to the Superintendency based in Vancouver, he resumed
his ethnic work in Vancouver Prebystery again with zeal.
Mainly one forms the impression that the Reverend Sieber is very
familiar and comfortable with the rural milieu and the rural mentality.
He liked to work among these people, especially in the North of B.C.,
whether as a minister or in a more official supervisory capacity. Many
of the anecdotes that he recounts in the interview tell of that.
His official record states that the Reverend Lawrence Gordon Sieber .
was born November 26, 1905; ordained May 26, 1933; married August 6,
1935. After pastorates in Vilna, Stony Plain and Vermillion in Alberta
Conference, he came to British Columbia Conference in 1943, in fact to
Revelstoke where he served until 1949. His next call was to Northern
British Columbia to Prince Rupert, where he worked for seven years before
moving on to Mission City where he remained until 1962. His next pasto-
rate at Wilkinson Road, Victoria, was cut short by his appointment to
superintendent of Home Missions. Reverend Sieber had a colleague super-
intendent who was responsible for Kamloops-Okanagan and Kootenay,
—3—
Victora and Church Extension, so that he himself was responsible for the
rest of the province and Vancouver.
Besides his pastorates Reverend Sieber held offices as Secretary
and Chairman of Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery, Prince Rupert Presbytery,
Secretary of Westminster Presbytery, and Secretary and Chairman of
Fraser Presbytery, as well as being Chairman of the -onference Committee,
The interview transcript gives an interesting account of the Reverend's
early boyhood in Ontario; education and first pastorates in Alberta;
pastorates at Revelstoke, Prince Rupert, Mission, Victoria; his work as
Superintendent of Home Missions in B.C., especially the ethnic work,
native Indians, marine work, and ecumenical ministeries in the north.
