Page 12B - The Smith Mountain Eagle, S.M. Lake, VA Wednesday, August 3, 2005 Planners are delighted with early responses to invitations to exhibit at the 17th annual Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival, scheduled for Sept. 24-25 on the Lakefront mead- ow at Bernard’s Landing Resort and Conference Center. “Early replies are just about guaranteeing this to be the biggest Festival yet,” said Vicki Gardner, Executive Director of the SML Chamber of Commerce/Partnership. “We’ve already had 20 vint- ners reserve their tasting tents, so Festival visitors are assured of experiencing a wide selec- tion of fine Virginia wines.” Even the newest area winery is planning to attend. “We just opened our doors in July,” said Drema Sylvester of White Rock Vineyards & Winery. “But you aren’t really in the wine business in southern Virginia until your official debut at the SML Wine Festival.” White Rock will be pouring five wines for visitors eager to taste vintages from grapes grown in Goodview, just a few miles from the Lake. Also new to the Festival this year will be Davis Valley Winery of Rural Retreat, Va., two hours south of Roanoke. “As a second year winery, we’re anxious to become known throughout Virginia,” said co-owner Rusty Cox. “And we hope to encourage visitors to the SML Festival to also attend our summer Amphitheatre events next year.” Other wineries that have signed on include: AmRhein Wine Cellars, Barboursville Vineyards, Cardinal Point Vineyard, Chateau Morrisette, Cooper Vineyards, First Colony Winery, Hickory Hill Vineyard, Horton Vineyards, Lake Anna Winery, Peaks of Otter Winery, Rebec Vineyards Inc., Rockbridge Vineyards, The Williamsburg Winery, Tomahawk Mill Winery, Valhalla Vineyard, Villa Appalaccia and Wintergreen Winery. All will be pouring their current vin- tages for Festival visitors who purchase “Taster” wrist bands. Sponsors, too, are supporting the Festival in a big way. Westlake Signs & Design Group has taken the single available Platinum sponsorship for the second consecutive year. Dabareiner & Associates - Ameriprise Financial has signed on for a Gold sponsor- ship. Silver Sponsors include: Allstate Thomas & Wyatt Agency; Aztec Rentals; Joan Griffith/Long & Foster; Leisure Publishing; Southern States Electric; The Gilbert Law Firm, PC; “The Pointe” at Mariners Landing; Waterfront Properties; and Windstar Properties. Bronze sponsors to date are: Bank of the James Mortgage; Capps Home Building Center; Countrywide Home Loans; First National Bank; First National Bank of Altavista; Exceptional Properties, Inc.; Mango’s Bar & Grill; Morton Buildings; Inc; Phil Hager Insurance Agency; P.A.C. Interiors & Floor Fashions; Piedmont Style; Re/Max Lakefront Properties, Inc.; Smith Mountain Dock & Lodge; Shoprite; Sun Trust Bank; The Roanoke Times; The Willard Companies; Turner’s Dock Building; and Valley Bank. Advance tickets for the Wine Festival can be purchased on line at www.visitsmithmoun- tainlake.com or from any of the sixteen area retailers listed on the site. Tickets are $15 for tasters and $8 for non-tasters thru 5 p.m. Sept. 21. ($20 & $10 at the gate). Music for listening and dancing will be provided by “Domino” on Saturday and “Fuzzy Logic” on Sunday. Extensive craft exhibitors and a variety of food vendors will also be on hand. Ali is a 19-year-old rescued Arabian gelding who now lives at the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue in Hardy. He doesn’t feel well—his hind legs are badly swollen from an acci- dent and he’s lost weight. However, Ali has a strong will to survive so equine rescuer Pat Muncy won’t give up on him. Besides giving Ali lots of personal attention and providing veterinary care, Pat allows Reiki practitioner Diane Novak to work with him. While Reiki is not a replacement for good vet care, it will compliment Ali’s treatment. When asked to define Reiki, Novak said, “Reiki is a subtle, non-invasive type of healing where energy flows from the practitioner to the client by touch—or laying on—of hands.” Benefits of Reiki, she explains, include relief from pain due to injury or chronic conditions, deep relax- ation, support for the immune system, and removal of energy blockages. Ali seems to enjoy what she does. Novak has always been interested in alternative medicine, but if she hadn’t had a cold, she might not have discovered Reiki. “I was going to cancel a massage because of feeling really badly congested,” she said. “My massage therapist said to come in—she wanted to try this new ‘healing’ technique on me. During the session I felt her hands get incredibly warm where my congestion was the worst. Within minutes I heard a pop, a swish, and in a short time my labored breathing became smooth. ‘What did you just do?’ I asked in amazement, and her answer was, ‘Reiki.’ I knew I had to learn this amazing technique.” A newcomer to the Smith Mountain Lake area, Novak was involved with animal rescue in upstate New York for twelve years and has been practicing Reiki for four years. She began working with horses about two years ago. “After learning Reiki, I knew I wanted to work not only on people but also on animals.” Before she moved to the Hardy area in early June, she emailed a few res- cue groups and offered to donate Reiki. Pat Muncy responded right away; her Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue depends upon donations of all kinds. Muncy was will- ing to accept any serv- ice that will help her animals feel better. And the horses do seem to enjoy Novak’s atten- tion. While Novak works with Ali, his paddock- mate Maggie, looks on. Maggie, a very preg- nant mare who will foal any day now, roamed loose with her daughter for two years in the Jefferson National Forest before they were captured and sent to RVHR in May. In a nearby paddock, five blind horses keep each other company. In another paddock, two adorable mini-horses, whose for- mer owner had to go to assisted liv- ing and couldn’t keep them, charm anyone who passes by. In a larger paddock, a group of mares placidly graze. Several horses bear scars of past injuries, such as Blair who has dam- aged hind legs from a trailer accident. A few others, like the paint mare Promise, are recovering from founder. Abby, a pony, is overcoming her attitude problems caused by a previous owner. A few others—like Maggie’s daughter Mae—are fine. All seem happy to be at RVHR. Of the 18 horses in residence, more than a dozen are currently available for adoption or foster care. Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue will have an open house on Sept. 4. Come out and meet the horses and those who care for them. More information about RVHR horses, services, and activities is available online at www.rvhr.com.
