"Integrity and Compliance" By Bob Kilmer, Matador Ranch Manager On occasion, I have the opportunity to visit with people in academia, or students, or other business people about our ranches. Sometimes the conversation will lead to questions about our parent company, Koch Industries, Inc. Those questions vary from "Have you ever met Charles Koch?" to "How is the company run?" My go-to answer is always "If you want to know how Mr. Koch thinks or how our company is run, then read "The Science of Success " and "Good Profit " books that Mr. Koch authored." And, if they have further questions, I l tell them about our Market-Based Management® (MBM®) Guiding Principles that we work to adhere to. In thinking about this quarter's newsletter, I thought that going through our Guiding Principles might be good information to share with our readers.

"Integrity and Compliance"By Bob Kilmer, Matador Ranch Manager

On occasion, I have the opportunity to visit with people in academia, or students,or other business people about our ranches. Sometimes the conversation willlead to questions about our parent company, Koch Industries, Inc. Thosequestions vary from "Have you ever met Charles Koch?" to "How is the companyrun?" My go-to answer is always " If you want to know how Mr. Koch thinks orhow our company is run, then read "The Science of Success" and "Good Profit"books that Mr. Koch authored."

And, if they have further questions, I l tell them about our Market-BasedManagement® (MBM®) Guiding Principles that we work to adhere to. In thinking about this quarter's newsletter, I thought that going through ourGuiding Principles might be good information to share with our readers.

So with that said, our first two principles are tied closely together - "Principle 1is Integrity" and "Principle 2 is Compliance."

1. Integrity. Conduct all affairs with integrity, for which courage is thefoundation.

2. Compliance. Strive for 10,000% compliance with all laws and regulations, which requires 100% of employees fully complying 100% of the time. Stop, think and ask.

Integrity...There is no gray area here. As employees, we directly affect thebusiness by our actions or in-actions. There are many things a business canteach employees to help them improve their skills, knowledge and performance, but Integrity is very hard to teach. Integrity is part of your character. As Mr.Koch states in his book, Good Profit, "Conducting all affairs with integrity is ourfirst principle because it is the basis for trust and the foundation for mutuallybeneficial relations with all our constituencies - employees, customers, suppliers, partners, communities and governments."

Compliance is the second area in which employees directly affect the business. There are local, state and federal laws and regulations we must adhere to as abusiness and as individuals. By disregarding these, we put the business, as wellas ourselves, at risk of being in non-compliance of the law and facing penalties, fines or other issues. When we look at Compliance from an environmental, health and safety standpoint, it becomes even more personal, as no one wants toget hurt, sick, or cause anyone else to get hurt or sick; nor do they want todamage the environment. Mr. Koch states in Good Profit, that "We have seenhow it takes only one person doing the wrong thing, one time, to do irreparableharm in society, to the company, and to fellow employees." Being out ofCompliance costs everyone!

Today, as employees and businesses, we should always strive to have the highestlevel of Integrity and strive for 10,000% Compliance with all laws andregulations.

"Farewell for Now" to One of OurBest...

If you've ever been in the main office at theMatador Ranch, chances are that you've beenfortunate enough to encounter one of the mostcharismatic and friendly people around. Knownto many as "the glue that holds it all together",Janie "Queenie" Campbell has been with theMatador Ranch for nearly 20 years and will beretiring in February of 2017.

Although her main job is serving as secretaryand office manager, Janie has never been afraid to help out where needed. Whether it be atask associated with the livestock, or just lending a listening ear to a fellow employee, she isalways more than willing to offer a hand up to someone. In asking several employees whatthey will miss most about Janie, almost every one of them mentioned her willingness to help.

Janie also takes great interest in the history of the Matador Ranch and the town of Matadoritself. Often happy to share literature or information about this history, her knowledge onthe subject serves as an instrumental attribute to ranch happenings. In one particularinstance, ranch manager Bob Kilmer recalls when the cookhouse was looking at being re-modeled. Kilmer says at first, although admittedly a little overwhelmed by all of the ideasshe had, when Janie said, "Bob, just trust me!', he did just that and was glad for it. "I haveshown people that cookhouse time and again, and everyone just goes on about how quaintand rustic it looks, yet we maintained the history of the building."

An everlasting source for information, Janie's organizational skills are surely something tobehold. Cowboys and fellow employees in the office agree that she is very rarely stumped inproviding a solution to a problem, and in the few instances when this occurs, is readilyprepared to provide someone with contact information to those who can be of assistance.

Dependable, personable, compassionate, and fair, as described by her fellow employees,Janie will surely be easy to miss and hard to replace. So for now, we won't be sayinggoodbye, but "see ya later", to one of the most instrumental pieces of the Matador Ranch

Matador Ranch Hosts Horse and Bull Sale and GoatRoping

The Matador Ranch held its first ever Horse and Bull Sale, along with a goat roping put onby West Texas Goat Roping Productions, on November 26. With abundant interest in the

livestock, it was a successful day, selling 15 bulls with help from Spring Creek Ranchmanager, J.D Russell. Neighboring rancher and fellow horseman, Bill Smith also brought

horses to the event to be marketed.

Although it was a cold day, with coffee, a free lunch provided, and lots of goodconversation, folks stuck around late into the day to partake in the goat roping, both as

competitors and spectators.

The following horses will be available at sales during the ForthWorth Stock Show and Rodeo

January 14 & 15:

MCC Missing Star (2010 red dun gelding)"Smurf" is a big, stout red dun gelding that is an all-around ranch horse. We have usedhim to sort cattle, drag calves to the branding fire and gather in large, rough pastures.

His sire was used as a calf roping horse, and his dam is now in the hands of a little girl inKansas as her 4-H show horse. This has been a great "go-to" horse for me.

Motley Co. EMS Receives DonationThrough Matador Ranch's Helping

Heroes Program

Matador Ranch has donated $10,000 to helpMotley County Emergency Medical Servicespurchase a new ambulatory cot lift system, animportant tool in transporting people viaambulance.

"What's terrific about Matador Ranch's generous donation is it helps the Motley CountyEMS crew help others, so the benefits continue every time we get an emergency callwhere we need to transport a patient," said Tony Rose, director of Motley County EMS."We can't thank Matador Ranch enough for this very meaningful donation to the MotleyCounty community. It will be a tremendous help."

A cot weighs about 200 pounds and when you add the weight of a patient it can bechallenging for two people to lift it into the ambulance. Motley County EMS already has acot lift system in one ambulance and the new system will be installed in a secondambulance, ensuring all patients will be transported safely.

"Tony explained to me how vital the lift is to the operations of their ambulance servicessince getting people to the hospital quickly and efficiently can save lives," said BobKilmer, Matador Ranch manager. "We hope this new lift system will be a big help to boththe folks that receive emergency care in our county and to our EMS heroes that do somuch for all of us."

Matador Ranch, along with affiliated companies Flint Hills Resources and Koch PipelineCompany, began the Helping Heroes grant program in 2012 to support Texas fire
